Higher Education Centre All higher education students are based in our dedicated higher education centre, giving you an opportunity to mix with like-minded people. The resources available in the centre are specifically chosen to meet the needs of higher education students.


Student support Every student at Bournville College is treated as an individual and that includes providing individual support tailored to their needs. You will be assigned a personal tutor at the start of your course. This person will give you one-to-one support and encouragement throughout your studies as well as point you in the right direction if you need further support and advice. You can access a wide network of support at the College, for example: • • • •

Careers advice Counselling Welfare advice Reasonable adjustments for learners with disabilities and assistance with co-ordinating externally funded support

Much more than a place to study When you join us, you get much more than a learning experience. There is a whole range of extra-curricular activities to ensure you get the most out of your time with us. We have a dedicated Student Activities Team who organise and manage a calendar of social events which you’re welcome to participate in. During stressful times, you can treat yourself at Urban Serenity beauty salon or Urban Elegance hair salon, where qualified staff will help you melt your cares away. Urban Flavours restaurant offers contemporary dining which is perfect for those special moments worth celebrating. Our on-site gym, Urban Fitness, features over 70 exercise stations, a steam room and a sauna and is available to Bournville students at a discounted price.

How to apply

Tuition Fees If we offer you a place on a course, you must pay part of the fee as a deposit to secure your place. The deposit is £1,000 for degree courses. The rest of the tuition fee must be paid in full on your first day at college.

Applying to study a higher education programme at Bournville College for International students:

Living Expenses The average cost of living for an international student is £600 per month. This amount will cover accommodation, food, travel, clothing, leisure and entertainment. This is only a guide, as each individual’s requirements are different. If you need to apply for a student visa to enter the UK, you will need to show the Immigration Officer that you have sufficient money for your course and for all living expenses. Airport pick up will be available for £150 per person through a private chauffeur service (London airports) and between £25- £50 from Birmingham International Airport. Accommodation The College offers local homestay accommodation with one of our approved host families as well as private accommodation via a private provider. Homestay accommodation We inspect all our host families to ensure they provide a pleasant home and a good welcome. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must stay with a host family until you reach the age of 18 according to your birthday. The cost of staying with a host family is: £115 per week for a room with breakfast, lunch and evening meal each day or £80 per week for room only (including some household bills but no food). Please note: not all host families are comprised of 2 parents with children. We have many experienced and friendly hosts with a variety of living arrangements – couples with children; couples with no children (young couples or older couples whose children have grown up); single parents with children; single adults living alone. Private accommodation If you’re over 18 and interested in living independently, please contact BISH (Birmingham International Student Homes)*. *Bournville College is not responsible for the content or service provided by external Internet sites.

Step 1: Choose your course Read all the college information very carefully, to help you decide whether Bournville College is the right one for you. Step 2: Application form Complete the international application form in full on the website. Please write clearly. If you are applying for an academic course or for the International English course followed by an academic course, you must also complete the writing task. You can post, email or fax the application form with copies of your qualifications to the International Office. Email: international@bournville.ac.uk Fax: +44 (0) 121 477 1600 Post: see the application form Step 3: Review Application We will consider your application carefully, as quickly as possible. It can take a little longer during our busy period (June – August). If we cannot offer you a place, we will send you a letter of explanation. Step 4: Confirmation If we wish to offer you a place, we will send you a conditional offer letter. We will tell you how to pay the deposit and give you other information to confirm your place. Step 5: CAS Offer After we receive your deposit, we will send you a CAS. You need your CAS number when you apply for your student visa.


Visa Each applicant must submit supporting documents as evidence with their visa application. The supporting documents can vary from applicant to applicant depending on individual circumstances. The documents required for an application under Tier 4 (General Student) are as follows:

• Proof must be in the form of original bank statements or a bank letter covering 28 days. These must be on official bank paper with the bank logo, and letters must be stamped.

• 2 x recent, identical passport-sized photographs of yourself

• You may use your bank statements or those of your parents/legal guardians.

• Current passport

• You will need to include your birth certificate and a letter from your parents confirming that they have given consent for you to use their funds to study in the UK.

• Any previous passports you have used to travel to and from the UK during this period of study (if applicable) • Documents that evidence an official name change e.g. marriage certificate (if applicable) • CAS number (issued by the International Office)

• Statements should begin no more than one month before the date of your application.

Work

• Original certificates of qualification and/or transcript of results. (If applicable - these will be listed on your CAS statement or alternatively a Welfare Officer will advise whether you should provide these)

If you are on a course at any level at a publicly funded further education college, you are allowed to:

• Letter from the official financial sponsor (If applicable) - only if you are being sponsored by Her Majesty’s Government, your home government, the British Council, or any international organisation or company.

• Work full-time during vacations

• Proof of English language proficiency as stated on your CAS (original certificates)

Bournville College will only issue a refund if the British Embassy rejects your application for a student visa. We do not give refunds for any other reason. To qualify for a refund, you must send us a copy of your refusal document from the British Embassy, no later than 6 months after the visa was refused. If you apply later than 6 months, no refund will be issued. If you intend to re-apply for a visa (for the next available course start date) you must inform the College in writing immediately. Please note: the college will retain £100 of your deposit.

• Bank Statements - covering a period of 28 days prior to submitting your application. The account must be in your name and must clearly demonstrate the maintenance costs available to you on the date of application. Statements must be no more than one month old and must be in the correct format as specified in the Tier 4 Policy Guidance. You must be able to prove that you have enough money in your bank account to pay your tuition fees and to maintain you during your studies.

• Work for up to 10 hours per week during term time

Courses • BSc Business (in partnership with University of London) To provide an understanding of the different functional areas of business and a solid foundation for a career in management. This degree is for you if you: • are currently working as a manager and would like to develop your professional skills and knowledge. • are already working within a business and wish to progress to management level. • have not yet decided which profession to pursue and are interested in the business sector, the management profession or in starting your own business.

• BSc Computing and Information Systems (in partnership with University of London) The programme aims to give you a wide appreciation of the subject, rather than just an understanding of existing commercial approaches, so that your knowledge can evolve and adapt to meet contemporary needs. You will develop skills in: • various aspects of programming • computer systems development and project management • design of database management systems, e-commerce, computer security and information systems management

Progression: The programme has been developed by academics at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), regarded as an international centre of academic excellence and innovation in the social sciences. This degree will prepare you for a career in areas of management consultancy, banking, accountancy and general management.

Progression: The programme has been developed by academics within the Department of Computing at Goldsmiths. The Department is a leading centre in the UK for the study of Arts and Music Computing, Cognitive Computing and Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Science. Academic staff are leaders and partners on a variety of research projects. This degree will prepare you for a variety of careers, including Systems Analyst, Systems Designer, Application Programmer and IT Consultant.


• BSc Creative Computing (in partnership with University of London) The programme aims to give you a wide appreciation of the subject, rather than just an understanding of existing commercial approaches, so that your knowledge can evolve and adapt to meet contemporary needs.
