college news Santander Career Academy of the year... Bournville College has won a national search to find the school or college that offers the best work experience and mentoring programme to its 16-19 year old students. The award, sponsored by Santander, comes from Career Academies UK, a national charity that helps young people bridge the gap between school and work by providing them with a structured programme of paid internships, mentoring, motivational lectures and workshops. Bournville College got a £5,000 prize, courtesy of Santander, to spend on equipment or material for their Career Academy, in recognition of the fact they have excelled in their delivery of the Career Academy programme. Norman Cave, Principal of Bournville College, says, “We are thrilled to have won the Santander Career Academy of the Year Award. We have been running the Career Academy programme at the College since 2006 and in that time have helped hundreds of students develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed at work. Our students past and present are a great tribute to how beneficial the Career Academies UK
programme is and we couldn’t have won this award without them.” Says James McCreary, CEO Career Academies UK: “We wanted to recognise the fantastic efforts our schools and colleges make on behalf of their students. We cannot exaggerate the determination and resolve shown by those who run our programme. This award goes some way towards acknowledging their hard work and thanking them. Bournville College impressed the judging panel with their dedication and commitment to helping young people raise their aspirations, and I congratulate them on their fantastic achievement.” Jennifer Scardino, Communications Director at Santander said: “Improving the employment opportunities for young people is so important for growth in the UK. Santander’s partnership with Career Academies UK is giving these students the skills they need. We’re very pleased to extend our partnership with this
award to recognise schools and colleges that demonstrate a real passion and commitment to improving the employment and education opportunities for their students. college news Bournville College helps apprentice style her future Bournville College has recently worked in partnership with Bromsgrove hair and beauty company, Denise Lesley to offer 16 year old Katie Tynan an apprenticeship in Hairdressing. Denise Lesley employs a highly qualified team of stylists dedicated to giving clients the highest quality service. Katie Tynan, 16 from Bromsgrove started working at Denise Lesley Hair & Beauty on a part-time basis before looking into the apprenticeship scheme with Bournville College. ‘I have always been interested in hairdressing and wanted to go into the area as a career. When I originally started it was on a part-time basis where I would greet clients and wash their hair. Since starting the apprenticeship in September I have been able to develop my practical skills and now perform treatments to my
own clients, including tinting and blow drying, reflected Katie. Stephanie O’Riley, owner of Denise Lesley Hair & Beauty Salon commented ‘I’ve been running apprenticeships for a long time as it fits in with the business and provides a solid training route to my staff. The day release that comes with an apprenticeship is much better for a vocational job as it gives young people the chance to learn in a real working environment’. “Katie has been going from strength to strength on the apprenticeship programme and is really enjoying the working environment and new facilities used at Bournville College.”, added Stephanie. ‘I am really glad that I decided to choose an apprenticeship in hairdressing. I am currently on the level 2 but would love to

progress onto the level 3 as the facilities at the College are fantastic to learn in and I love going to college. I am able to actually do the job, learn and gain money too – I did look at full time college hairdressing courses but as I already had a job I preferred the option of integrating it with an apprenticeship’, added Katie.
