Welcome to the third annual Bowen Island Event Planner.

The first two were wildly successful at introducing you to the islanders who create events like anniversaries, birthdays, engagements, weddings and corporate gatherings, and to the locations and venues for these events, and we're confident this one will do the same. Our beautiful island in the Salish Sea is an ideal hosting place, with breath-taking scenery, spectacular venues and the artisans and business owners capable of pulling it all off, and you can learn about it here.

The planner can introduce you to so many island opportunities. For example, the Ruddy on Bowen is now catering events, big and small, with a service that could even include a venue, in their garden at the cozy Sunset Cafe. If you're hosting an event and looking to send your guests home with gifts that have a local-flair, there are plenty of ideas here. If you’ve been on social media for a minute you’ve probably seen an abundance of different types of food boards popping up. They are super trendy for entertaining, delicious and the perfect way to incorporate your decorating skills.

Literal eye candy, food boards are always a hit at any event and the days are gone when they are limited to different types of cured meats.

You name it, anything can be on a food board. There are cheese and charcuterie boards, sweet boards piled high with cakes and cookies, breakfast boards, seafood boards and even build your own taco boards. No matter how you define them food boards are here to stay. They can be thematic, or simply used for a quick appetizer snack.

Best Ingredients for a Charcuterie Board

A good charcuterie board has a display of different types of cured meats, along with cheeses and accompaniments such as fruit, olives, nuts and spreads. To make the best charcuterie board, try to focus on three things: variety, taste, texture. Add items that are sweet, salty, crunchy, fatty, savory, carb-rich, pickled and brined. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s so easy to make it simple and fun to put it all together!

I love how fire is dynamic and ever changing. Cooking over fire requires constant attention and presence. It's a combination of experience, skill and instinct. Also, food cooked on fire tastes better!

Your 5 top foods to cook over a wood fire?

It's very hard to narrow it down to 5, so here's a sample plate of some of my favourite fire cooking items to add to a menu: Fire grilled wild salmon, seared venison, loin Asado Cross whole lamb. Fire charred fresh garden vegetables such as broccolini, garlic scapes, radish, and summer squash. Smoked crispy potatoes.

What's your go-to wood for flavour?

Alder is the obvious answer here on Bowen Island, but I love cooking with fruit woods when I have the opportunity. Each different hard wood imparts flavour, so differe nt wood suits different menu items. But overall, I think cooking with cherry wood is my favourite.

Share your most memorable wood fire on Bowen

My favourite moment of a wood fire cook is early in the morning when the fire has just been lit, the dew is still on the grass, and the sun is starting to peek above the trees. The pit crew gathers and shares coffee around the fire. I love the early morning sti llness, the smell of wood smoke and the anticipation of a busy day of fire cooking.

Charred lemons! Don't forget to accompany your main dishes with sides and garnishes that add flavour, complexity and style to the overall dish. Charring lemons on the fire is a very accessible and delicious way to showcase fire within your meal.

Fighting to control the fire in the elements. Fire is alive, so manipulating that fire to do what you want it to do with all the natural elements fighting either with you or against you is fun. Every fire is different.

Harvest Fest 2023. It was our second annual dinner at Meadowbrook and having a lamb that was raised on property and then processed on property and fed to a group of people who understand the importance of such a tight closed circle of our local food systems. -

I would say vegetables. Yes, proteins are key to have on a fire but when you can take a vegetable and elevate the flavor with smoke and fire and draw out sweetness from something bitter or caramelize something that's naturally sweet, truly showcases the impact of fire cooking.

In May 2023, we planned a surprise event on Bowen Island to celebrate my partner Andrew’s 50th birthday. Soon to be full time islanders, the event would bring us together with a special group of people from Bowen–friends new and old. The event was planned in secret over three months and enlisted the help of several guests who volunteered their time and talents.

What was your favourite moment?

arriving at our building lot and seeing the faces of our Bowen friends awaiting Andrews arrival–a fantastic group of people had come together.

Sitting down to an outstanding supper that will live on in the memories of every guest. With the planning now a distant memory, it was time to feast and celebrate!

What do friends still talk about?

The Details

The event took place on a beautiful late Spring day between two locations; guests first assembled at our building lot mid island for a toast to Andrew. Next, the gathering moved to Snug Cove for a seated longtable supper at our friend Kevin’s home. The al fresco meal was prepared by our friend Andy, and his partner Alana. Lining the table, handmade glass votives were created by our friend Mia.

as mentioned, the longtable supper was prepared by our friend, a Chef and former restaurant owner–guests raved about the family-style meal he prepared which included Beef Wellington, poached salmon with pesto dressing and summer new potatoes, and fresh fruit roulade topped with berry coulis. several guests still comment that the event was among the most memorable they’ve attended on Bowen.

Was there a lifesaver moment?

last minute work priorities almost resulted in our Chef needing to head off island before the event–luckily he was also a magician–and it was on with the show!

What did out of town guests rave about?

one couple flew in for the event from out of province–they were blown away by the evening–which was wonderful to hear since they had moved mountains to be able to attend.

One piece of advice?

delegate! delegate! delete! But seriously, find hidden (or not so hidden) talents and interests among a handful of people to help with the planning and execution of your event. In our case, we delegated menu planning and meal preparation, table decor, and setup. We also had a friend offer up his home and yard for the longtable supper and another friend help coordinate and manage the setup. The event could not have been possible without this support.

Doing it on Bowen meant…

new friendships–an opportunity for our friends living on Bowen to meet new faces from the island. Several folks met for the first time, exchanging contact details and staying in touch after the event.

Fun fact…

our longtable supper was held near the original Union Steamship Company’s seaside resort–a stone’s throw from the No. 1 Picnic area Bandstand. Bringing friends together to celebrate, laugh and share stories was all the more special given the history of the location.

Sharing our intimate vows with our family and friends while looking over the beauty of Seymour Bay.

What do friends still talk about?

My friends still talk about how perfect the venue was for a wedding including the scenery at the golf course, the outstanding catering from the Shed and the evening party with dancing.
