Remembrance Day drew a huge crowd to Snug Cove, including representatives from a number of groups represented by the flag bearers who marched in to pay respects at the cenotaph. There were readings, music and silence as we remembered the losses due to the ravages of war. Groups gathered afterwards to share food at Doc Morgan’s and The Legion. photo: Louise Loik

We will raise the money that is required by the federal government to facilitate this sponsorship.“We already have

$1,500,” says Bastin. The effort got rolling only six weeks ago and Bastin is confident the group can achieve their goals. “This community has raised thousands upon thousands of dollars to educate girls in Ghana. Bowen is amazing for helping out in a crisis.“

When asked how she plans to raise money she doesn’t pause for a second. “I’m going to ask.” Turner says that islanders will also have the opportunity to provide hands on support to this family upon arrival. An account is being set up for donations n at The First Credit Union on Bowen.

If there was a dollar for every ounce of compassion and determination embodied by people on Bowen like Andrea Bastin, her group’s fund-raising challenges would be over. Bastin has gotten behind other social causes in the past, lending expertise and energy in spite of having the life of a busy mom with young children. Bastin is now collaborating with a group of four other islanders including Lizbeth Turner, to raise enough funds to sponsor a refugee family from Syria. The Station does the work of “plucking the bodies of refugees out of the sea,” says Bastin. The Aid Station received $4000 from island contributions that week. “Good work with refugees was already happening on Bowen with Lizbeth Turner,” says Bastin. They
