Islanders urge friends and neighbours to get out and vote on firehall MERIBETH DEEN EDITOR

The municipality’s ability to move forward on the building of a new firehall will be left up to community members this coming weekend. General voting on whether or not to approve the borrowing of up to $3 million to build the fire hall will take place at the Municipal Hall on Saturday August 19. A number of Bowen Islander have been urging people to get out and vote, and mostly, to vote yes. In a letter posted on social media, Tim and Jennifer Pardee looked to the devastation caused by wildfires through out British Columbia to emphasize the importance of bringing Bowen’s fire fighting infrastructure up to date. The main fire hall on Grafton Road was determined to be seismically unsound in a 2002 report, and in 2008 another report recommended an entirely new hall be built instead of attempting to upgrade the old one. “My biggest concern at the moment is - if an earthquake happened before the completion of this project, what would we do?” Asks former councillor Cro Lucas. “The building we have now is structurally unsound. It served its purpose as a garage, we can’t leave the fire department’s equipment in there and we can’t leave it out in the open.” Lucas says the fire hall issue has been on his mind since early in his first term at council in 2008.

There are no ‘butts’ in my mind about this, everything is positive.

“One of the first things Fire Chief Brian Biddlecomb did after the 2008 election was show us how inadequate the fire hall is, and it has taken a long time to get even to this point in the plan for a new one,” says Lucas. “There are no ‘butts’ in my mind about this,

everything is positive. The chosen location is the cheapest place to build, and if you’re going to build, don’t just build what you’re going to need in the next five years - build what you’ll need in fifty. The plan is definitely not too extravagant.” Another former councillor, Peter Frinton (on council between 1999 - 2011, with a two year break in the middle) says he also believes a “yes” vote is the way to go, but has some reservations about current plan for the new hall. “I’ve looked at about 10 different fire halls, from Whistler, to West Vancouver, Pender, Mayne Island and some on Vancouver Island, and chatted with a number of fire chiefs” says Frinton. “ I don’t pretend to be en expert, but I think we should distinguish between what is needed and what is wanted.” Frinton’s concerns lay not in the location of the proposed hall, but that the land is not being used to maximum benefit or efficiency. He feels that forty parking stalls are excessive and that the drive through configuration of three double bays requires too much valuable land. Frinton also questions why the indoor training facility and social area is not put on a second floor of the station, or even using the old hall, if upgraded, for the latter purpose. He also wonders about synergies for other community uses, partnering with RCMP, or even creating affordable housing above. “I think we have to move forward on a new hall, but I am hoping that after the referendum passes, Council can put their foot down and say yes, we’ve got the money, but we should negotiate the design details. However, I’m not sure they’ll be willing to challenge the fire department on such issues,” says Frinton. “Balancing these considerations is the fact that the firemen are largely volunteer, and deserve strong support.” The land required for the new fire hall proposal is roughly one-acre, and the municipality is estimating that the new building will cost the average property owner $68 per year over the next 30 years.

Monika Sabathil wants to talk to you about organ donation MERIBETH DEEN EDITOR

Bowen Islander Monika Sabathil lived with kidney disease for decades, cleaned her blood with a home dialysis kit for nearly a year, and is now settling into life with a healthy kidney thanks to a deceased donor. “They say to wait a year or so before you contact the donor’s family to thank them,” says Sabathil. “That’s how long it takes before you know whether the transplant is going to work. I feel pretty good these days, but I am still going from blood test to blood test in terms of knowing how things are.” Sabathil says that when her health started to really decline because of her kidneys, about two years ago, she started the hunt for a donor on her own. Then she found out that to find a match would be extremely complicated, “one in a million,” she says, and she left it up to her doctors to find a kidney. “They called me last November, and said pack your bags be ready to go anytime,” explains Sabathil. “From there, it took another five months. The donor was on life support.” While she is still nervous about the outcome of her transplant, Sabathil wants to talk to Bowen Islanders about organ donation facts and ensuring they have registered a decision about what to do with their organs should they die suddenly. Sabathil will have a booth at Bowfest, but also is willing to help islanders check out whether or not they have registered and go through the process if they contact her by phone. Her number is: 604-947-0440 Organ donation facts: • People of any age can be organ donors, the oldest donor in Canada was 93 years of age. • 35 British Columbians died in 2014 while on the transplant wait list • less than 1% of British Columbians die in a way that would enable them to become an organ donor • 6,446 transplants have been performed in British Columbia since 1968

Adios, Undercurrent This week’s paper is my final paper with the Bowen Island Undercurrent. I asked Meribeth for a bit of space for me to write my thank you to the community. It’s been quite a ride getting to know Bowen through the lens of the community newspaper these past four years. Yes, there have been highs and lows but that’s what living in a tight community is all about, right? In any case, the most important thing I will take from my time with The Undercurrent is what I’ve learned about and from this community. We are a diverse bunch. We are rural yet urban, we are hippies and yuppies (who, do, in fact still exist). We are retired, we are just starting out and many of us are very

young, but one thing we all are is very passionate about where we live. I also know we are in this together. The support, kudos, kindness and humour I have received over the years of working at the paper have been an invaluable resource for me to draw upon when there have been times of strife whether work-related, community related or personal matters. Here on this little island, every one of us can make an impact, and often that comes down to a choice to smile, say hello and treat our community members with kindness and respect. If we disagree, well so be it. We should and do still support each other in our right to live, work and play here.

So thank you, Bowen. I’m not going anywhere far. I’m off to new adventures with the great team of staff and students at IPS... and I’ll still be selling pies and baked goods, and I’ll still be at the Beer and Wine Store several days a week, ready to help you select a bottle of wine. See you there, Maureen Sawasy, otherwise known as “Moe” Formerly, Ad Sales and Admin at The Undercurrent PS: And just for fun, This Week in Undercurrent History! ---->

This week in Undercurrent history 25 years ago A an overnight car accident had residents questioning why there were no police officers on island to attend to the scene. It was estimated that the crash occurred sometime around 1am. An officer from the North Vancouver detachment did not arrive until on scene until 2:45am, well after the victims had been taken to Lions Gate Hospital. At the time, Bowen Island was a satellite detachment of North Vancouver. 20 years ago The headline in the August 22, 1997 edition of The Undercurrent read, “Community Centre plan backed”. A referendum vote was to be held Sept. 20 for the community to decide whether they wanted various community groups to raise $750,000 to build a 4, 500 sq ft community building. 15 years ago An article in The Undercurrent detailed the need for more affordable housing on Bowen. Describing how the least expensive house listing (at $200,000) was woefully out of reach of some buyers, those that were left to rent were also beginning to wonder about their futures. Entire houses were being rented for as much as $1400 and, “people without a good income couldn’t possibly rent one of these places on Bowen Island.”

FRIDAY FRIDAY AUGUST AUGUST 18 11 2017 2017 •• 55

A dog-gone good time for sure! We were a little worried, in the lead up and not sure if there was going to be a Dog Days of Summer event this past Sunday. Friday night the wind was crazy strong and blew six of our tents into the ocean, then the heavy rains came late Saturday evening with no clearing in sight. The whole thing was saved by friends who came with extra tents. Then the clouds parted, the sun shone, and the dogs arrived! in costume and it was a great day! Yes, the weather co-operated, but it was the continued community support we have received over the years that has made this a successful event and fundraiser. We could not have pulled off this event without the essential service of volunteers. Because of your help, we were able to raise money for BC Guide Dog Services and, this year, Bowen Island C.A.W.E.S. Thank you so much: Sue Lieske, Marnie Pereverzoff, Hayley Mythen, Karla Saruk, Donna Baker, Mike Brannon, Ellen and Drake Nickle (and Ellen’s visiting girlfriends from Chilliwack), Dean Nickle, Earl, Ripper, all the USSC Marina staff. Also, thank you to our newbie volunteers: Penny Naldrett and her daughter Ainslie, Courtni

McGillivray and her son Jack. We would like to thank our judges: Dee Elliot, Karen Munro, Moira Steward and Harry Monahan. Thanks to all our vendors: Bowen Island Vet, Bowen Island Dog Ranch, BC Guide Dog Services, C.A.W.E.S., Dogwood Rescue, Dayna Woodman (Noah’s Barque Pet Care) and the Knick Knack Nook. Of course it wouldn’t be Dog Days without all the great raffle prizes. Thank you BOWEN BUSINESSES for donating really amazing items for our raffle baskets. The winners were all so excited! Thank you: Alderwood Farm, Artisan Eats, Bell’ochio, Barcelona, Bowen Pet Supply, Bowen Island Golf, Bowen Island Flower Shop, Bowen Roaster, Bowen Island Tattoo Shop, Cates Pharmacy, Cloud Flower Clayworks, Connie Wright, Conscious Cosmetics, Cocoa West, Dogwood Rescue, Emilie Kaplun, Juniper Studio Gallery (Vickie), Nature Encounters, Phoenix, Ruddy Potato, Rustique Bistro, Snug Coffee House, the Soup Fairy, USSC Gift Shop, Village Baker and Wren. We also would like to thank Harbour Air for providing a fantastic prize of two tickets for their Vancouver

Panorama Experience flight. Here’s a BIG call out to our sponsors. Every year we ask and every year they provide! The primary source for our funding is from these businesses. Their donations go directly to BC Guide Dog Services. We thank you very, much for your continuous support! Huge gratitude to Artisan Office Services, Bowen Pet Supply, Bowen Island Pub, Bowen Island Dog Ranch, Evergreen Acres Riding Centre, Nature Encounters, MacDonald Realty (Dee Elliot, Frazer Elliot and Mary Lynn Machado), Irly Bird Building Centre, Snug Cove General Store and the Union Steamship Co. Marina. We would also like to thank the unstoppable Conni Smudge for helping to MC, along with Bill Thorton, the director of BC Guide Dog Services. Conni you were a hoot and thank you for brining Angie up to the judges tent. Most of all ~ a HUGE thank you to my husband, Paul (one of the strongest men on Bowen!) and our own Fairy Flagger, Jewal Maxwell. She is a “jewal” to me because I could never have pulled off this event with out all her help. Basia Lieske

How Ari talks about the home he loves REBECCA SMITH SUBMISSION

For Arrian Smith, an iPad is more than a toy - it is the tool that opens up the world of language. Ari turns 8 this week. Rebecca Smith, photo

My son Arrian (Ari) is now in his 5th year of living on Bowen Island. Our family moved here when he was three years old and awaiting his diagnosis of Autism. Back then, Ari had no words and few gestures. He had a very difficult time communicating beyond pulling us around by the hand or screaming in frustration. The recent years of living at a slower pace in a quiet house surrounded by woods have lowered Ari’s anxiety significantly. Without the sensory overload of the city, Ari has been able to self-regulate and learn. Ari enjoys personalized learning at home through Self-Design, a private distributed learning school. He has a support team that includes a Speech/Language Pathologist, an Occupational Therapist, a BC Certified teacher that follows and assesses his learning, an Education Assistant, as well as various other consultants. He is never without one or both parents; we typically teach him one-on-one while his big brother, Alexander, attends public school. When Arrian was four he started to present flashcards when he wanted a specific food item such as a banana. We decided to try loading some flashcard apps onto an old iphone and he took to it straight away. This meant he could tap on the flashcard and it would say the word “banana” out loud for him. This was a major breakthrough in communication for Ari and it was the beginning of something quite amazing. It led to the purchase of an iPad mini loaded up with an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) app called Proloquo2Go. This was the pivotal point for Ari, giving him access to verbal language. Discovery of this capacity in himself has brought him great joy. Ari is able to read and spell at his grade level and has an avid interest in expanding his vocabulary. Proloquo2Go

updates frequently to keep up with popular culture. It can also be customized so if you need a button you can create it yourself. Ari wanted to learn how to make his own buttons. He began by replacing some of the preset buttons with his own photos. He replaced the image in his “boy” button with a photo of himself. He gradually personalized and reorganized his AAC until it felt like his own. We gave him space to build and personalize it and he would come to us for support when he needed help. When he learns something new or explores a new place he will sometimes add a button or two to his words. Over the summer, even though Ari’s technically on his school holiday, he has been working on a project that is very important to him: he has built a folder of all things Bowen. He has explored much of the island with us. He has studied Bowen maps and Google Earth. He spent last year practicing his social skills by visiting Bowen Island businesses in person asking each contact for a business card to add to his collection. He loves Bowen Island and has been very motivated to create a folder of language so he can talk about Bowen. It has evolved some since it’s first edition. Currently, he has things sorted somewhat geographically with some sub-categories. He keeps adding to it and refining it. Some of the photos are ones he has taken himself while exploring and others he has sourced on-line. He hasn’t needed or asked for our help with this project at all so, the folder he has made has had no adult input at all. He just loves this place we call home and it’s a huge part of his world. He needed to have it represented in his own way. Access and connection to his community have given Ari a wonderful quality of life on this island. As we celebrate Arrian’s 8th birthday this coming week we are again reminded how grateful we all are to be here.

Fastpitch 2017 wraps up with a win by the Twins! MERIBETH DEEN EDITOR

The Twins and the Diggers had something of a rivalry throughout this fast pitch season. The Diggers entered the tournament with 14 wins and the Twins had 10, the two teams met one last time on Sunday evening to determine the league championship and in a dramatic seventh inning, the Twin’s scored three runs for the win. “In the sixth inning we had Paul Whitecotton on first and Aaron Johnstone, who is one of our best players, hit a double for sure,” recalls Diggers coach Tom Woodward. “Paul ran to past second to third and then had to turn back, and got tagged out on the way back to second.” At the top of the seventh, the Twins got a player to third, and Tyler Jacquette got a hit up the line allowing the player on third to get home. Next, Matt Guildersleeve got a double, scoring another two runs for the Twins. The Diggers managed to load the bases when they got up to bat, but Twins pitcher struck them out before they could get another run. “We haven’t won in eight years,” says Twins coach Julian Stevenson. “We’re probably the oldest team in the league by now, but still, it would be great if we could keep this going.” Tournament announcer Wayne Seaman says the parity of play made for exciting ball throughout the whole tournament.

“The games are not nearly as predictable as they were a few years ago,” said Seaman. “What really excited me, though, was seeing all the kids out there watching - eager to be the next generation of Bowen Island Fast Pitch players. The game is dying just about everywhere, but the persistence of keeping it alive here is a testament to the success of the league.”

Bowen-based carver and artist Simon Winadzi James says he is nearing completion on a project he is currently calling “Visitor” that will be displayed in the BC Children’s Hospital new building. “I got the log last March, in Kelsey Bay, and started carving in April,” he says. “This kind of carving is normally called a frontlet or a headdress. These are very intricate carvings, but my version is much bigger than they typically are.” “The sculpture is based on a story of a mythical human that fell to earth and left an imprint in stone,” says Winadzi. “Perhaps it comes from the many petroglyphs on the coast left behind by my ancestors. Some say that this man arrived through a portal from another time or place.” Winadzi, known to many people on Bowen as Simon Daniel James, comes from the from the Kwakwakwawawkw Nation and has been carving for 34 years. He says every sculpture tells a story. With this work, Winadzi says he has been trying to make the face of the statue look like a smiling human child - because many of it’s viewers will be children. He says he also hopes the piece will convey a sense of healing. “Initially, I had it painted red and black, but the children did not like that,” says Winadzi. “So now, it is back to plain wood but there still may be some colour added. The building where this work is to be displayed is expected to open in mid-September.

For a few years now, Bowen Island’s Youth Services Co-ordinator John Stiver has been setting up skateboard ramps and jumps at the satellite firehall on Adams Road roughly once per month in the summer. This weekend, though, the event is going to feature demonstrations and talks given by world class skateboarders. “These guys are not only amazing skateboarders, but they have really interesting backgrounds and I know they have a lot of positivity to offer youth,” says Stiver. Constable Troy Derrik, for example. is a member of the Surrey RCMP and a member of the Gitxsan First Nation. Stiver is also eager to host Kevin Harris, one of the top freestyle skateboarders in the world. “Until I picked up a guitar at about the age of 17 I lived and breathed skateboarding, I even competed,” says Stiver. “Harris is about ten years older than me, and we were at a lot of the same competitions. Unless his sidekick, Rodney Mullen was there, he would win every freestyle competition. He’s got the world record for the greatest number of 360s in a row, but I’ll let him tell you that story.” Stiver says that he has been wanting to bring this kind of event to Bowen to help encourage support for a skate park here.” Stiver explains that years ago, his prede-

cessor at the Youth Centre tried to get a skate park built, but in the face of community resistance, agreed to having the ramps and jumps instead. “Back when we could just pull those out onto the parking lot by the youth centre, there were a lot more kids who would come out,” says Stiver. “But that parking lot has degraded making it harder to offer kids the opportunity to skate. Still, any time youth are engaged on what they want to see happen on Bowen, a skate park is always in the top three requests. Now we have two youth, Finn Rainsley and Thomas Pedley, leading a new skate park initiative. Unlike the bike park, they’re doing this without a lot of parental support. We already have in-kind donations, and I am confident they could raise the money required to do the rest.” This initiative grew through the Bowen Island Community Foundation’s Youth in Action program, which aims to help youth realize they have the power to make things happen. “These plans are really being led by the youth,” says Stiver. “So far, we have support in the form of in-kind donations, but there is a lot more work to be done. Personally, I would really like to see these young people succeed in their dream of getting a skate park built.” Youth Centre RAD Demo Day Saturday August 19 3-5pm Firehall on Grafton

Youth Centre Summer Art Program melds Taoism & good plain fun MARYSIA MACGILVRAY

Circles of Life opens August 16 at The Gallery

Katherine LaFlamme’s new exhibit explores geometry in nature and showcases the use of a broad range of media.

SUBMISSION

The creation of the Bowen Island Cultural Master Plan was a process that sought input from the community, on a variety of topics regarding how arts and culture should play out on our island and in our lives. As a participant, Denise Richard was one of many who gave a voice to how she believed Bowen youth should be encouraged more towards the arts. Although the revised Cultural Plan is in its final stages, yet to be adopted by Municipal Council, that hasn’t stopped Denise (who is an artist, counsellor, and Chi Kung instructor) from actively engaging in this passion project. Teaming-up with the Bowen Island Arts Council, the Bowen Island Youth Centre, and Bowen Island Community Learning, Denise is offering a free class for youth on August 24th, from 5-7pm. Teens ages 12-15 can come participate in this unique brush and ink program, where in repeated one-minute intervals, participants paint in a stream-of-consciousness style, encouraged to lose themselves in the “flow” of the moment, and see what arises. Often the results are surprising and enlightening, sometimes they are even a little magical. Called the Youth Taoist Art Project, Denise will teach a lot about artistic process, and a little about Taoism as a way of approaching art and life, as well as guide participants to inquire about their own inner being, how that comes out on paper, overcoming obstacles, and reflecting as a group on the images that stand out the most. When asked about her motivation on this project, Denise says: Without an awareness of how a person feels there is no way to distinguish who they are. When the youth know how they feel and see, they can relate to this world with more clarity. To offer youth of this island a way that is clean and of heart is truly a trusted way. Part meditation, part self-exploration, and part just plain fun, youth are encouraged to take advantage of Denise’ experience and enthusiasm as a professional artist and instructor, and register for this free class soon, as spaces are limited. Register for free for the Youth Taoist Art Project through Bowen Island Recreation at bit.ly/youthartproject or by calling 604-947-2216.

The “Pin-up Moms” series explored a sense of personal rebirth after having her first child. “Circles of Life” is an observation of some of the cycles in everyone’s lives, geometry found in nature, and a confrontation between digital and organic. “Circles of Life” runs from August 16th to September 10th 2017 and showcases a broad range of artwork, from original oil paintings and mixed media to unique framed pencil drawings. The Bowen Island Country Fair and Slug Races have been at Bowfest as an annual tradition since its inception over forty years ago... who has the biggest zucchini? Who has found the fastest garden slug? Who has grown the tallest sunflower this year? As a community fair, Bowfest is made by the people in the community for the community to have fun! The event is made possible by the volunteer board and many volunteer individuals and group. The Bowen Agricultural Alliance, committed to growing food, knowledge and commu-

nity, is pleased to once again be running the Bowfest Country Fair tent which will include the regular contests, the slug races and a Mini Farmers market. We look forward to seeing you at the Country Fair tent! Why do we do it? It’s fun to be part of a tradition! If you are attending the fair on Sat. August 26you can enter in the Bowfest Country Fair Contests at no extra charge! Bowfest Country Fair Contest Categories: Tallest flower grown on Bowen, Biggest Zucchini grown on Bowen, Strangest Looking Vegetable or Fruit or plant grown on Bowen, Best Photo of a Bee (any type of BC bee), Best Photo of a Slug, Favourite Animal

or Farm or Pet Animal Award through photos, Kids Lego Contest -create a farm or garden-inspired lego creation, Fiber Arts Finest -finest handknit/ crocheted/spun/felted creation. Slug Races will run at 12:45 and 1:15 pm at the Country Fair Tent! Adults and youth welcome to bring a racing slug and slug race bribe (ex. A piece of lettuce). Slugs that interfere with other racing slugs during a race will be disqualified. No snails allowed! Racing slugs from Bowen-only allowed! Slugs must be returned to the wild after the race. Hey kids! Next weekend is Bowfest, your favourite day of the year! And just before the parade, there is the Rotary Run for Rwanda. If you are up to 9 years old, you can register for the run that goes from the ferry dock through the park up to Miller Road and back – a really easy 1.5K. Your registration for the run costs only $10 and if you like, one of your parents gets to run or walk the 1.5K with you for free. This idea is especially good for younger brothers and sisters - last year we had a couple of two-year-olds! It all starts at 8:30 on August 26th. At the end of the run you get a great medal on a red ribbon, then fruit and muffins to reward you for all that hard work; what’s more, the first boy and the first girl home win excellent prizes, and at the prize giving at 10:15, you may win a draw prize as well. What a great deal! If you are a really good runner, you could do the 5k or 10k run with your parents or friends or on your own. You can register on line at www.rotaryrunforrwanda.com or do it before Friday afternoon at Phoenix or the First Credit Union where they have registration forms for you. On Friday 25th, you can pick up your run bib with your number on it between 4:00 and 7:00 pm on the Library lawn. If by any chance, you forget to get your registration done before Saturday, you can do it at the last moment, but that’s a bit of a rush and you will need to sign up on the Library lawn before 8:30. Your parents can buy advance tickets to Bowfest on Friday afternoon and on Saturday morning before the run. That saves standing in line at the gates later on. By the way, the Library lawn is the best spot for watching the Bowfest parade and that’s where you will be if you stay for the prize giving. So come on out and join us; your $10 goes to Rwanda to help girls to pay for their education.

Handloggers Half Marathon trail race and relay – ready, set, go! BITS

SUBMISSION

The Handloggers Half (HLH) Marathon Trail Race is all set to go again on Labour Day weeken. Once again, this year’s proceeds from the race will support two worthy causes. A portion of race proceeds and special donations will go to the newly formed Bowen Island Trail Society (BITS). BITS is a volunteer organization dedicated to building and maintaining a well-integrated community trail network for non-motorized

trail users on Bowen Island. BITS has been busy doing maintenance on sections of the Skid Trail, Handloggers Trail and the Mid-Island Trail to improve sections of the race course which are becoming treacherous for running, hiking and mountain biking, because they are getting worn and washed out. BITS is looking for new members (including runners, riders, and hikers) interested in supporting trail development initiatives on Bowen. Another portion of race proceeds will also continue to support developments at the

Akili All Girls Preparatory School in Kisumu, Kenya. Alison Osborne from Bowen Island continues to work with the school founders David Omondi and Erick Otieno to support the construction and operation of a school focused on educating and empowering the girls and women in their community. The Akili Girls’ Preparatory School is a gateway out of poverty for both the students and the teachers. Funds donated are used to give women and girls a chance to succeed through quality, free education; this community is beginning to

transform through a collective effort. This year the race will get under way at 9am on September 2 just next to the ferry dock with the spectacular finish on the causeway. This beautiful course around Mount Gardner can be run solo (open class) or as a three person relay. We are expecting a larger turnout this year based on the current interest in registration with regional, inter-provincial and international runners joining the event. Great prizes will once again be offered to the top men, women, youth and relay teams. We are once again very grateful for the support of all of our sponsors that have donated prizes, food, and water and to the amazing group of volunteers that help with organizing, preparing and administering the race. For more information and to register online before September 1 at visit handloggershalf.com We look forward to seeing you there!
