BIKING ON BOWEN

Tips to help you get pedalling around the rock this summer, even if it means walking your bike

Road work equals traffic delays in May CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

The municipality says to prepare for up to 15-minute traffic delays on sections of Dorman Road and Bowen Island Trunk this month due to road work. Crews will be enhancing a new bike lane going up the hill from the Cove, and completing the temporary road repairs done after BC Hydro’s work last fall, says a municipality press release. This work will take between two or three weeks, “depending on contractor availability and weather,” it says, and will include grinding down the existing pavement, re-paving and painting lines. It’s schedule to take place Monday to Friday — 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. — with single lane traffic while crews are at work. They say exact dates will be announced once contractors for the work are confirmed. “We appreciate your patience while we complete this work before the busy summer season arrives,” they say. (In other words, remember to give yourself plenty of time to get to the ferry!)

For those who want to balance in life, slacklining is also an enjoyable form of exercise, as Baz Cardinal demonstrates. Feature page 3

Message to impaired drivers — stay off roads CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

Plan ahead and don’t drink and drive, says Cpl. Paulo Arreaga of the Bowen RCMP, talking to us at the paper, about road safety and alcohol on the island. Here’s more of what he had to say on this. Undercurrent: Calls for causing a disturbance or being intoxicated in public were higher for 2017 with 27 calls, up by 10 from the year before. What do increases like this indicate? Arreaga: There could be several factors that would contribute to an increase in these types of calls. Some years might see several larger events being held during good

weather that might even extend late into the season. Good weather tends to increase noise levels and in alcohol related activities. As the popularity of Bowen Island increases we might see an increase of all kinds of calls for service. Undercurrent: Anything else you’d like to say about drinking responsibly on the island? Arreaga: Yes. It never ceases to amaze me how much of a set back an evening of a little too much alcohol can bring to anyone’s life. I have experienced people losing their jobs, friends, family, licences, housing, and livelihood all due to one night that ended up being the last straw. Continued page 9

The Plant Sale will open promptly at BICS at 11 a.m. — and will last for one hour only. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get a place in the front of the queue. The better items sell out very quickly! The club’s members have been busy collecting a wide variety of plants and shrubs over the last six months to ensure that there will be generous choices available for your gardens. Prices will be competitive. Given the ravages of our resident deer population expect to find a large collection of “deer resistant” plants for the unfenced portions of your property. For 2-3 weeks in May, depending on contractor availability and weather, crews will be working on resurfacing sections of Dorman Road and Bowen Island Trunk Road. Resurfacing includes grinding down the existing pavement, re-paving and then painting new lines. This work will complete the temporary repairs made to the roads following the BC Hydro construction work completed last fall, and will include the enhancement of a new bike lane going up the hill towards the school. Work will take place between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. You can expect to see large machinery and vehicles on the work site. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane, alternating direction. Please expect delays of up to 10-15 minutes to drive through the work area. Flaggers will direct traffic. Exact start date will be announced once contractors are confirmed. Please check www. bowenislandmunicipality.ca/alerts for daily updates. We appreciate your patience while we complete this work before the busy summer season arrives.

Walk the line, or at least give it a try CHANTAL EUSTACE EDITOR

dynamic line, suspended between two points. And it’s even more challenging to try the wobbly-legged experience without a good deal of laughing — especially if you’re new to it, like me.

If you want to make slacklining even more challenging, try doing it without laughter. Baz Cardinal works on arm strength as well as his balance. Photos supplied by Bowen Island Adventures

Kiley Redhead stays focused on the slackline.

That’s all part of the experience, says Kiley Redhead co-owner of Bowen Island Adventures, along with partner, Baz Cardinal. Their three-hour slacklining workshop, Line Up For Fun, aims to introduce the sport to people of all levels, says Redhead, right here on Bowen. “Under the canopy of majestic trees, try your hand — or should we say ‘feet’ — at this addictive sport. During this adventure, you will help rig up the line and learn the basics of getting on and taking your first

steps,” says the event’s description. Some people are intimidated by the sport, she says, until they try it. “People don’t realize that you can immediately have fun,” says Redhead. “The whole learning process is fun.” Cardinal describes his first attempt at the balancing sport quite vividly. “My leg was shaking and swinging as if it had a mind of its own, which induced a hearty laughing fit,” he says, in a blog post on their website. Redhead says all their events and

workshops aim to encourage people to get outside and try new things, from slacklining to rock climbing or foraging. “We want people to fall in love with being outside,” she says. “And we want people to realize that they’re capable of doing more than they thought.” Their next slacklining workshop will be held Saturday, May 5. You can learn more about their upcoming adventures on Bowen Island, and see a full calendar here at BowenIslandAdventures.com.

Remembering Colin Ruloff The island mourns the death of 23-year-old Colin Scott Ruloff, who was killed in a dirt bike accident at Satellite Hill on Tuesday, April 24. Colin came to Bowen Island with his parents, Walt and Laura, when he was three months old. By the time he was six years old he had three younger brothers, Chad, Andrew and Charlie. Colin attended Bowen Island Community School and Island Pacific School. He played soccer, roller hockey, baseball, and Ultimate Frisbee. He took guitar lessons with Teun Schut, and drawing with Bill Hoops; two interests that he followed throughout his life. For his masterworks project at Island Pacific School, Colin created a hand-drawn animated short film. Colin went on to attend Dwight International School for Grade 10, and graduated from West Vancouver Secondary School before studying briefly at Emily Carr University. Colin developed an impressive art portfolio and strove to create emotive and reflective images. In the past year Colin worked to develop his artistic skills at GILT Studio under the guidance of David Graff, and created a series of paintings for an animal hospital in North Vancouver. Colin’s true dream and ambition was to become a country singer. He performed on Bowen Island and in the Vancouver area under the name Scottie Collins, playing guitar and singing in a country-blues style that was heavily influenced by

Mississippi John Hurt and Townes Van Zandt. Colin wrote much of his own music, some of which can be heard on SoundCloud (under Colin Ruloff, country singer.) Colin’s art and music reflect his desire to see the way other people live, and so, after getting a tattoo of Bowen Island on his right arm, he set off on a five-month trip to explore the American South, and New Orleans in particular. Colin lived in Montreal for a year, and ever determined to be self-reliant, hitch-hiked alone across Canada. After travelling to France with his brother Andrew this past summer he returned to live on Bowen. Colin enjoyed this first taste of adult life on Bowen, remarking about what a warm and welcoming place it was. He enjoyed connecting with old friends and meeting new ones including those he met as a member of the Blacksheep Morris dancers. Colin was looking forward to going tree planting for the summer with friends and was planning to go to Halifax in the fall to immerse himself in Acadian music and study at Dalhousie. Colin loved adventure and to see the rest of the world but also loved his island home. He was gentle, kind, and able to see good and admirable qualities in everyone he met. He leaves behind his parents, Walt and Laura, and his younger brothers, Chad, Andrew, and Charlie. He will be greatly missed.

Colin Ruloff aspired to be a country musician. In the top photo, Colin’s love of Bowen Island is evidenced by his tattoo. In photos from left: with his mother Laura; Colin on the IPS Ultimate Frisbee team; with the Black Sheep; Colin’s artwork from Stories of Compassion book, 2009.

Spring is in the air for music lovers

Artist Louise Drescher’s painting, Snug Cove, will be on display at Cove Commons as part of her exhibit titled, Beautiful Bowen Island.

JANE KELLETT B.I. COMMUNITY CHOIR

Art from a Bowen Island nana

LOUISE DRESCHER CONTRIBUTOR

My granddaughter, Kalliope, took me by the hand to show me her island. Every time I visit Bowen we hike off for new adventures. Exploring with a small child allows you to see so much more, even in the back yard. “I will show you the secret trail to our reservoir, Nana, it’s where our water comes from.” As a grandmother I can slow right down to the way a child sees. I am not in a hurry anymore. So we take our time. Sometimes we bring our paints for a plein air excursion with a backpack and a picnic. The paintings I made for this show at The Gallery at Cove Commons are based on my ram-

blings with Kalliope. We hugged Arbutus trees at Cape Roger Curtis and looked into tide pools where limpets and tiny crabs were hiding. We found favourite sailboats at the marina and pretended to sail away as pirates. When we were tired we climbed up to Artisan Square for ice cream cones. At night, from her bed, we watched the Langdale ferry glide along Howe Sound in the moonlight. Bowen Island has magic and the families who live here are doing their best to preserve and protect it. It is driven by a strong sense of community and care. I feel this every time I come to visit. I hope that my paintings reflect the spirit of Bowen Island.

Ah! Warm weather has finally arrived on Bowen Island. With the change of temperature, and the longer days of sunlight, comes the annual Bowen Island Community Choir Spring Concert. The island is blessed with many opportunities for individuals to join together and sing in a variety of choral groups. The most established of these groups, the Community Choir has sung a diverse repertoire of music for more than 25 years — music that has challenged and inspired all levels of singers and brought enjoyment to our large and appreciative audiences. Our program this spring continues this tradition. Our talented and dedicated choir director, Ellen McIntosh has selected songs that will at times move you and at other times have you humming and clapping along. The choir, working with Ellen and our accompanist, the amazing Sheilagh Sparks, is in the final stages of polishing these pieces that showcase the choir’s love of singing. Percussionist Brian Hoover, MC Graham Ritchie and the choir’s small ensemble, as well as several special guests will join us in this enjoyable program. There are two concerts on Saturday May 12, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Cates Hill Chapel. Tickets are available at Cates Pharmacy and at the door.

Since 1978

There’s nothing that can prepare you for the leg-grinding, lung-busting, brain-kicking agony that is road biking on Bowen. I’m at the bottom of Tunstall Boulevard, in my granny-gear, staring upwards at an endless incline. Everything in my body tells me to stop peddling. Above me, a turkey vulture hovers, curious about whether or not I’m going to make it, or whether I’d make a nice meal. And just then, a plucky man with grey hair passes me smiling, comments jauntily on the sunny weather. I watch his pedals disappear ahead, rounding a corner into the sunshine. I get off my bike and push it to the top of the hill. Even for a regular rider like me — I’ve done the Whistler GranFondo three times, in three years — moving to Bowen, and conquering the island’s hefty hills, well, it kind of terrified me at first. The angles on this island are steep. The road shoulders? Non-existent. The potholes are deep. And there’s often no one else on the road except for you and a few unsympathetic deer, rolling their eyes at your cardiovascular shortcomings. So even though this 52-square-kilometre island has glorious views, plenty of sunny days, and stretches of seriously nice pavement, I didn’t bike here at all my first summer. I took the ferry over to the mainland, looped Stanley Park or even headed out to Iona Beach in search of blessed flats. But last summer, I broke down for some on-island adventuring on wheels. My first attempt at road biking Bowen was a complete bust. The endless inclines and sharp corners bested me. I had to unclip, walk up a bruiser of an incline on Bowen Bay Road, and then repeat the process trying to get home in one piece. Forty minutes later, I was red in the face,

had tire grease crisscrossing my legs, grass matted in my cleats and felt emotionally and physically defeated. “Never again,” I told my husband. “This island is for e-bikes and scooters only!” Eventually though, I found people who ride locally and learned ways to move my wheels more successfully around “the rock.” Like how Mount Gardner Road past Killarney Lake is a nice ride full of rolling hills with minimal traffic and great views. Now I love a good island spin. Here’s some of what’s helped me get on the roads here. Hope it helps you to get out there and bike Bowen.

Tips:

— Park and ride. If you live a at the bottom of a bonkers hill — like me — put your bike in your car’s boot, park someplace central, like the Cove, or even at one of the Park n’ Rides. Then head out from there. It’s easier to ride mid-island, and the hills are less intense than some hillier routes that might discourage you from even trying. — Plan a mid-ride treat. It’s amazing what a chocolate croissant or a side of fries can encourage you to do. — Find a bike buddy, or three. Riding with a group is just more fun, even if you’re in the rear watching them scoot ahead of you. — Pack some nourishing snacks, plenty of water and dress in layers. Basically, plan for weather shifts. Bowen Island may be small, but there’s many weather systems, or microclimates here. I’ve left one side in the sun, to end up riding on wet roads, soaked on the other side. — Prepare! You never know when you’ll get a flat tire. I bike with a spare tire tube, pump and bike tools. Also, it means if you stumble upon a fellow rider in need of help, you’re ready to lend a hand. — Have fun and don’t be embarrassed to get off, push your bike up that hill. I do it all the time. Getting outside, rain or shine, and enjoying the island on your own steam, well, you won’t regret it! (It’s good for you too.)
