Bowen rallies around local man injured in altercation BRONWYN BEAIRSTO EDITOR

Bowen Islanders are rising up to support a beloved local volunteer, dancer, artist, friend, partner and father injured in a violent incident August 3. Gerald Morrisseau, 53, suffered severe injuries in an altercation on

Trunk Road early Friday morning, which sent Morrisseau to the hospital. While the RCMP are still investigating the alleged assault, two men were arrested August 6 in connection with the incident. As knowledge of Gerald’s injuries, which include head trauma, memory loss, and severe bruising, became public over the weekend, several

means of supporting him and his family emerged. Donations are pouring into a GoFundMe account, created August 5. In just two days more than 70 donors have contributed just under $8,000. Prayers, good wishes and love for the well-known islander fill the comments section of the page, which can be found at Gofundme.

com/gerald-morrisseau. Alternatively, First Credit Union opened an account on behalf of Gerald and his family Tuesday. Donations can be brought to the counter in person or, after hours, put in an envelope marked “Gerald” and placed in the deposit slot on the wall outside the bank. If you’d like your name included with the

donation, the Credit Union asks that be noted on the envelope. Also, e-transfers can be sent directly to Gerald’s email address: stealthbanshee@hotmail.com. A Meal Train site has also been set up, so that community members can contribute prepared dinners for the family. Continued on page 3

Water Conservation Guidelines In 2016, Council endorsed Metro Vancouver Regional District’s Water Shortage Response Plan (WSRP) in order to promote awareness about the importance of water conservation. The plan defines guidelines for four levels of water conservation for users of municipal drinking water systems, aiming to manage demand for drinking water during the summer months, and if necessary during times of emergencies. Please note that on Bowen, the plan is intended to provide guidelines for water usage, not restrictions. Throughout the summer, water conservation stages will be posted and updated regularly on the Municipality’s Alerts and Advisories webpage. For more information, please go to: www.bowenislandmunicipality.ca/water-conservation

Q&A with Gary Ander Injured local is known for a kind heart

We at the Undercurrent are starting to look toward the October 20 municipal election. As this council starts wrapping up their term affairs and community members start thinking about running for office, we’re asking current and previous politicians about their experiences running for municipal office. Our second Q&A is with first-time councillor Gary Ander. What do you wish you’d known before running for council? Well, the campaign was no picnic, but, it reflects an engaged community. The time commitment is surprising, but also is optional, depending on participation in committees etc. Neither of which would preclude me from doing it again. What advice would you give to an aspiring councillor? First and foremost, have the best interest of the community as your guiding principle. Come with an open mind, not a personal agenda...and patience. How did it feel to walk into the pub (or the Snug) after you became a councillor? Same as always. How has your perception of Bowen changed over the past four years? My perception has not changed, on the contrary, it has been reinforced by the many illustrations of commitment, dedication and the unselfish desire of our community members to continue to strive to make and keep Bowen Island the wonderful, caring community it is. How has your work in contracting on Bowen informed your council decisions? My background in contracting has been helpful in under-

standing, certainly the building department ins and outs, but also knowledge of the building process, construction costs, manpower etc were useful in different project discussions. What’s your greatest council accomplishment? I wouldn’t say there has been a single “grand “ accomplishment but we, as a council, have had, in my mind, a successful term. There have been many “issues” that have been dealt with and a lot of changes and development projects that have been moved ahead. There are still some in progress, like attainable housing, community centre and medical centre, which would have been nice to see through, but will have to wait on the next council. I would like to think we leave the island environmentally sound and prepared to face the future. What would you do differently if you could redo the past four years? Absolutely nothing What qualities will you be looking for when you vote for the next mayor and council? Integrity and team players who “get” Bowen Island. What’s an issue that you feel will be important for the next council? Besides the obvious…housing, our forests, parking, etc. I feel it will be important to address growth and all its relevant consequences. What do you think Bowen will look like in 20 years? Bowen Island will have achieved an equilibrium where growth, the environment, our quality of life and the communities expectations are all in balance…wouldn’t that be lovely.

Continued from page 1 While many concerned locals have already committed meals, some slots still remain open. People can sign up at mealtrain.com/ trains/20n0r5. Gerald is a long-time islander, recognizable by his tall stature and known for his kind heart. Among other things, the local father is an artist. He’s had shows on-island and has worked in many mediums, including leather, metal, bone, stone, glass and especially wood. He has marched in parades and participated in festivals as one of the Black Sheep, a local troupe of folk dancers, along with his partner Sadie. While shock and anger have reverberated throughout the community in the wake of Friday’s events, especially on social media, Gerald’s friends have been sharing their admiration of the man. “He is a big, tall man who stands out in a crowd for being uniquely himself,” said Sarah Haxby, who’s known Gerald for more than 25 years. “He has been a generous and positive contributor to the community for decades.” “He has been the artist for the First Nations and Friends afterschool art club program that I run in my job as school coordinator,” said Haxby in an email. “Over the years he has worked on many projects with the students at Bowen Island Community School during, and after school, being kind, caring, giving and sharing. “News of his injuries will impact

Logger show:

An editorial slip of the keyboard

Last week’s edition of the Undercurrent labelled Kelly Miller as “the” organizer rather than “an” organizer of the Logger Sports Show. I apologize for the slip of the keyboard – I recognize that Logger Sports, as with many local events, is the result of tremendous community and volunteer effort, and Gary Anderson, among other hard-working locals, deserves recognition as an organizer. The mistake was mine, I’m sorry loggers. Bronwyn Beairsto, Editor

Dear editor, I just read last weeks paper with the article on the loggers sports show and was unhappy with how it said “the show’s organizer Kelly Miller.” I am just one part of the team that made logger sports what it is, with Gary Anderson being the driving force behind the whole event. I cannot take sole credit. I believe I’d said something along the lines of “The event came together with Gary Anderson and the Bowen Island Loggers Sports Society as well as all the amazing volunteers!” when talking about the show. Just wanted to clarify so everyone got recognition for all the hard work they did! Thank you, Kelly Miller, Logger’s Sports Society

House numbers can save lives Library card is a

Dear Editor, Have you noticed lots of blue reflective house number signs on Bowen Island? My dear friend Sheila Webster, our daffodil bulb lady, has been doing more wonderful volunteer work for Bowen Islanders. She is taking orders for these house number signs, because a blue house number sign could save your life. Your child has fallen down the stairs and is lying unconscious on the floor. Your friend trips over a carpet corner and can’t get up, maybe a broken leg or worse. You awaken in the night with violent chest pains. You arrive home to find smoke billowing from your home. Hopefully none of the above will ever happen to you or to any of us. However, as we all know life doesn’t always work out that way. What to do? Call 911 and ask for one of our Bowen Island Emergency Services to come to your home immediately. The wait can seem endless and all too often you have to call back because, although the service has found the road on Bowen Island where you live, they can’t find your actual house. Why? There are a number of reasons. Maybe the number of your home is:

#102–495 Bowen Trunk Road, PO Box 130, Bowen Island BC, V0N 1G0 Phone: 604.947.2442 Fax: 604.947.0148 Deadline for all advertising and editorial: Monday, 4:00 p.m. www.bowenislandundercurrent.com

lying on its back in the dirt? Hidden by flowers or weeds? Hidden behind a bush or a small tree? So small it is almost invisible from the road? Is tarnished brass and difficult to read? Is one of several numbers on one board? Add night time, rain or snow and the situation gets even grimmer. After talking with all the Emergency Response Teams on Bowen Island, the Rotary Club of Bowen Island launched an initiative last year to help these services find your home and more importantly help save you, your family or your home. The Rotary Club of Bowen Island has been selling blue and white reflective house number signs that do not fade or wash out. They are already drilled with holes for screws or bolts to attach to any wooden structure. The Rotary Club of Bowen Island only receives 12 per cent of the proceeds (and that amount goes to other Rotarian projects such as the Rotary’s long-term project of the Eradication of Polio Worldwide.) Please consider purchasing a blue or white house number for your home and family. It could save a life. The contact person is Sheila Webster at rotarynumber@gmail.com. Jeanie Seward-Magee

It’s an adventure you can take with a library card. Though in this case, outside of the pages of a book. Bowen Island Public Library is participating in Library Day at the Fair at the Pacific National Exhibition (better known as the PNE). On Wednesday August 22, present your local library card and you’ll get $6 admission ($9 dollars cheaper than usual.) The end-of-summer savings are available for all B.C. library cardholders associated with Public Library InterLINK. The Fair is open between August 18 and September 3, though the library card discount is only for the one day. To get the discount, each person must present a library card, which can be obtained for free at any local library (as long as you’re a resident in the region.) Bowen Island Public Library is open every day except Mondays, though hours vary, so you can stop by, grab a library card, and maybe grab a book while you’re at it.

Slow down for baby deer Dear editor, Not for the first time, someone has removed the laminated signs I posted near my home where the deer habitually cross the road and where drivers habitually speed. I was concerned to give the new fawns in the neighbourhood a chance: there is a doe with tiny spotted twins and at least one other with a single fawn. My signs were removed within a few days of my posting them. On a previous occasion the individual even posted a crude hand-drawn cardboard sign outside my house showing a deer in the crosshairs of a gun. I am at a loss why anyone would be offended by the signs, which I go to some effort and expense to post. Their attitude seems disrespectful of the beautiful nature in which we live. Our deer become pregnant in the fall and carry their young for about 200 days before giving birth in the late spring. We typically start to see the baby fawns in mid to late July. All that maternal toil can be wiped out by one speed-

A barking shame Dog Days is on hiatus BRONWYN BEAIRSTO EDITOR

Dog Days, Bowen’s annual forfun dog show, usually happens the same weekend as the annual ball tournament. However, a post to the Dog Days of Summer Facebook page on July 29 announced that the event wouldn’t be happening this year. “We are sad. This years’ Dog Days of Summer event has been

cancelled. There were not enough folk to help organize it,” reads the post. But there’s hope for future summers. “We have decided we need to form a committee to run this event. Anyone interested in being on the Dog Days planning committee please let us know. We plan to meet in the fall to organize this event for the next summer.” People can contact Dog Days on Facebook @bowenislanddogdays.

As locals watch the growing fruit on the Davies Orchard trees, news comes down the line that Applefest is likely cancelled. The annual festival, put on by Bowen Heritage, has happened every Thanksgiving Sunday for a little over twenty years. Traditionally, the fruit from the orchard trees is harvested and made into pies and other goodies. “We used to make the pies in someone’s kitchen,” says Bowen Heritage’s Judi Gedye. But since Metro Vancouver

demolished four orchard cottages in July, dwellings Bowen Heritage had fought for more than two decades to keep standing, heritage board interest in continuing to exist has dwindled, says Gedye. “There has been a crisis of lack of volunteers for the last few years but no change and no funding for help with that,” says Gedye. This extends to Applefest, and even possibly the museum that Bowen Heritage operates in the orchard. Gedye says that the organization will continue to ask around for support, but that she’s not feeling hopeful.

A helping hand

The Bowen Island Community Foundation, which handles a lot of the island’s charitable monies, has a special fund of up to $1,000 for local people in need NEIL BOYD B . I . C O M M U N I T Y F O U N D AT I O N

We on the communications committee of Bowen’s Community Foundation have got a bit of a quandary. How can we write a story about our Helping Hand Fund? To maintain and respect the privacy of our recipients, we can’t use their names and we can’t describe the specifics of their grants. But we do want to write about the Helping Hand because it is one of our most important funds. It provides assistance for vulnerable individuals and families on Bowen “who are suffering as a result of unemployment, serious injury or illness, or severe personal financial hardship.” The maximum grant is $1,000 and confidentiality is critical. The individual names of grant recipients are never made public. The fund began in 2012, the brainchild of the Little Red Church’s Shelagh MacKinnon and Joyce Ganong, former chair of the Foundation. “We had this idea of providing financial assistance to those in need,” said Shelagh. “Although we have provincial medical coverage, there are extra expenses borne by the patient and their families, especially for cancer therapies. “It is not a loan, but a grant, a gift,” said Shelagh. “[It’s] a way of saying ‘you are not alone and the caring of island residents is with you.’ “We are glad to be there to support families going through hard times due to all the vagaries of life in the 21st century: family breakup, financial distress, or simply trying to cope in very difficult circumstances.” Soren Hammerberg, another former chair of the foundation, took Shelagh and Joyce’s idea and created a structure for the Helping Hand Fund. “This fund has become the social conscience of the foundation,” he said, “speaking to who we are as islanders, assisting neighbours who need a helping hand.” Since 2013 the foundation has committed to providing an annual amount of $10,000 for this initiative. The tenets of the Helping Hand were set out about five years ago and today a committee of locally engaged islanders meets monthly to identify vulnerable individuals in need. The committee draws on referrals from

the RCMP, the oncology department at Lions Gate Hospital, the Caring Circle, and community members who work on the island. Both Paulo Arreaga of the RCMP and Colleen O’Neil of Caring Circle have been asked to come to meetings to speak to the kinds of assistance that are most needed on Bowen. A director of the Community Foundation’s board always sits on the Helping Hand committee – a position currently held by Larry Lunn – so that the foundation may oversee the fund. A special thanks to islanders Gary Ander, Amanda Oekeloen and Spencer Grundy, who have served on this committee since its inception. Since 2013, the Helping Hand Fund has given an average of 10 grants per year to Bowen Island individuals and families in need. Since 2016 the Knick Knack Nook has generously provided $5,000 annually to support the fund, a key part of their mandate to provide Bowen Islanders with some measure of social sustainability. Well, perhaps we can give you a small peek into the kinds of grants that we have given over the past five years without compromising anyone’s privacy. We’ve provided transportation money for sick children and adults, to ease the burden of expensive hospital commutes. We’ve made it so that parents can stay in the city with their children while undergoing treatment. We’ve contributed for food vouchers, for those who have fallen between the cracks. “It is a hand up, not a hand out,” says Shelagh. “The committee is grateful for this opportunity to be of service. As we wind down the 2018 calendar year, we at the Community Foundation hope to create an endowment for the Helping Hand, ensuring that we have sufficient capital to allow us to continue to make these grants in perpetuity. If you are able to contribute, please consider going to bowenfoundation.com, clicking the button on the front page that says “Donate Now,” and selecting the Helping Hand Fund from the list of available funds. Any amount of money would be very much appreciated – a commitment of conscience, as Soren Hammerberg put it, to assisting those of our neighbours who are in need of a helping hand.

What a wedding Bowen Island threw

MARCEL BALLY

P R O U D FAT H E R

Last October, to the soundtrack of crashing waves, our son Jeremy Bally proposed to Kendal Miller at the lighthouse at the Cape. Given that our son grew up on Bowen, learned how to take risks on Bowen (and subsequently to talk to Bowen’s wonderful RCMP officers),went to Island Pacific School on Bowen, and had the teenage realisation that his mom knows everyone on Bowen, we came up with the perfect theme. This was to be a “Made on Bowen” wedding. With a swell of community effort, Jeremy and Kendal were married July 28, 2018 on our Bowen Island property. So we’ve got some thank yous to dole out! First, we want to thank Bowen

herself, the unceded territory of the Squamish Nation. We get complacent about this special place and we should not! Dave Paulus and crew took down some hazard trees and open up the spot for the marriage-to-be. Cam Rolfe and crew (sorry I am lousy with names) spent many, many long hours in the rain and mud and hot sun to clear land, build a foundation for a green house and, at the last moment, built a shed (now called the Love Shack.) Scott Stevenson stepped up to flatten and clear areas for seeding. In April we had dirt and in July we had grass- thanks Bruce Culver and sons! Thanks to Jen Mc and the Island Girls (I swear I saw a couple of guys) for cleaning the gardens and making a trail! Richard Mayo and his partner (I’m really bad with names) built

fences (the deer needed to be protected from the crowds.) Missy Manor housed our dogs (Sammy-our gal, Diesel-the fostered, and Sparrow- the rescued). Basia and Paul organized the venue. One highlight of the wedding will be my memory of Basia stressing because of too few hands, but working with Ono, our eightyear-old visitor from England, to get the tables set. Related- a special thank you to all our visiting family, Bowen friends and Jeremy and Kendal’s friends who helped before and after with the set-up/take-down jobs (did I mention it was hot!). They were invaluable! I Will Cut You (Sadie and Karymn) provided fabulous hair and makeup! Thanks to all the bed and breakfasts that hosted our son and Kendal (Jen and Alan), our daughter and Matt (Henry) and Kendal’s family

and friends. As well we need to thank those that put up with last minute changes (Barbara and Lucia) to our plans. Peter King and his bus-thanks! Caroline Walker provided outstanding flower advice. Caroline McDonald provided straw bales for extra seats. Shelagh MacKinnon performed her last official wedding ceremony before moving off of Bowen Islandshe is such a great person. Jeremy and Kendal were so blessed to be married by her. Matt Matheson and crew (sorry again) catered the event. The food was awesome! Jaman and Carrie (Copper Kettle) made a most excellent plum hot sauce! Wagsville Dog Camp provided much need parking and thanks to all our neighbours on and near Harding Road for allowing the late

night festivities. Jesse Toso carved an old cedar stump into something special- a hand holding a church- and he also gave us a mushroom and an image of Dumbledore. Ok to be honest Jesse does not live on Bowen, but he loves working on Bowen, so that counts. Although it may not be appropriate to thank an inanimate object, my tractor and trailer were the best -offering much needed aid to move so much “stuff ” up and down the property and to provide rides for kids (and some adults) during the reception. I hope I have not missed anyone, but we are Bowenians and Bowenians are understanding. Thanks Bowen- what a marriage you threw! Editor’s note: We’re starting society pages! Email us about your weddings, birthdays and celebrations!

Digging for redemption MARCUS HONDRO CONTRIBUTOR

The Bowen Island Men’s Fastpitch League’s 2018 season wraps up this weekend with its annual year-ending tournament. Finishing at 18-2, the Diggers won the regular season easily – they’ve been dominant in recent years – but it’s the tournament that really counts. “Oh, absolutely, the pressure is on the Diggers,” Cruiser Jim Gibson, whose team is a contender to beat the Digging Crew, said this week. “Anything other than winning the tournament for the Diggers would be a catastrophe.” Gibson may be simply trying to put pressure on his opponents because the Cruisers’ manager knows upsets routinely happen in tournament play. But the Diggers are firing on all cylinders and look to regain the crown they won in 2015 and 2016 before losing it last season. In 2017, despite a poor

The second game of the tournament sees the Shakers playing the Twins at 9 a.m. Saturday and then the Cruisers, who finished second in the regular season (11-9), play the Fireman at 10:45 a.m. In total there are six games Saturday, one starting every hour and 45 minutes. The round-robin portion of the tournament ends with games at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday morning and then the first semi-final goes at 12:30 p.m. and the second follows. Games are well attended and fans can buy food and beverages at Snug Cove Field. There’s also music, announcers and professional umpires. An organizer, Casey Grundy, notes that the league and Bowen Island Pub have teamed up to provide a bus service for those needing a ride home from games and from the pub late Saturday night. Those details, and the full schedule, are available on the league’s Facebook page.

regular season, the aging Twins won the tournament. Over the years the Twins – the franchise began life as the Steamers - have won the crown more often than the Queen of Capilano has been late, but to manage it again this year they’ll have to do it after another sub-par regular season. All six ballclubs in the league get into the tournament, each playing three games in the round-robin portion. After those games are done, the top four teams play in the semi-finals, with the semi-final winners meeting in Sunday’s final. A draw determined matchups for the round-robin and the tournament opens with the Diggers and Brewers on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Brewers finished last, so it is first versus worst. If the Diggers win, as expected, they start their quest to erase the pain of last year’s loss. However, if the Brewers upset them, it immediately puts the Diggers’ season in jeopardy.
