BIM GETS $100,000 FOR COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN
BRONWYN BEAIRSTO Editor@bowenislandundercurrent.com
Bowen Island Municipality loves plans almost as much as it loves its committees. The island has a transportation plan; a parks plan; an island plan; a cultural plan; a community recreation plan, is working on an emergency response plan and of course, there’s the Official Community Plan (OCP). Now the island is going to get a community economic development plan. The province announced last week that Bowen will receive nearly $100,000 for the community economic development plan through the Rural Dividend Program (Bowen isn’t technically classified as rural, so got onetime waiver to apply to this program. BIM is, however, working on getting permanent rural status). The muni says that the grant will cover 80 per cent of the costs of the two-year project, including a new part-time position.

ONE HOUR OF CHAOS:
The Bowen Island Garden Club’s annual Jumbo Plant Sale fundraiser at Bowen Island Community School brought out the green thumbs in islanders of all ages Saturday. The (island) famous sale lasts just one hour and, as one Bowener put it, “you’ve got to get up your elbows” to find that perfect hosta before it’s snatched up by your neighbour.
Bowen Vet reopening in June A NEW VET IS COMING TO THE CLINIC AND WILL OFFER 24-EMERGENCY SERVICES
From NewYork City, to the Carribean, to Texas, to Calgary, to Vancouver, Dr. Midge Ritchie has treated all kinds of animals. Now she’s taking on a new challenge: Bowen’s furry friends. Ritchie is Bowen’s new veterinarian. With more than 15 years of experience
working with animals (first as a kennel assistant, then as a technician and finally as a vet), Ritchie is taking over the stead of Bowen Vet founder Dr. Alastair Westcott. Bowen Vet closed last July so that its staff could focus on opening the

As a long-term guide for municipal policies and bylaws, it’s how BIM can enhance the business base on-island. Buzzwords include “sustainability,” and “resilience,” or how municipalities (and businesses) can react to whatever life throws at them while not sapping resources. In an economic context this means looking at population growth, the island’s service needs, jobs, revenue sources and the potential for the ever-more common natural disasters (among other things). The new staff person is also to identify potential partnerships – with businesses, organizations, First Nations and individuals (presumably economically beneficial ones).
Why?
Such a plan is part of the much-referenced OCP – mother of all municipal planning documents. Part of the desire voiced in the OCP is to reduce the number of people commuting to the mainland for work. The OCP says that Bowen wants on-island jobs and services and services that meet islanders’ primary needs. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Behind frosted windows, in pharmaceutical-esque packaging, are the first grams cannabis that will be legally sold on Bowen. Friday, the Happy Isle Cannabis Company opens its doors, or at least flicks on its open sign. Bowen’s first marijuana establishment, on Dorman Road, beside the Village Baker, has to adhere to strict federal and provincial legislation, which includes no minors passing the threshold, or even peering through the windows (hence the frosted windows). Inside, a boutique vibe (designed by islander Jamie Smith) invites customers to smell, look and ask questions about the just over 20 strains of cannabis offered at the shop. “The overall look is very warm and friendly and inviting,” said store manager Rob Forbes. “[We] didn’t want to make it too medicinal looking or anything like that.” The selection is currently flower (dried marijuana), oils, tinctures and capsules. Edibles and concentrates aren’t yet legal for sale in Canada (though are expected to be later this year). The shop will have CBD (a non-psychoactive cannabinoid) and THC (a psychoactive cannabinoid) products. All of the products are government sourced and all of the staff thoroughly trained. “One of the biggest things about educating people is knowing what they’re getting and what to expect when they take it,” says Forbes. “They’ll know exactly what they’re getting

Mother’s Day If it’s not obvious from my need to celebrate every. single. holiday. I have a soft spot for sentimentality. But I always have a hard time with Mother’s Day. Am I supposed to get a birthday-size gift for Mom? Or just a card? And am I allowed to buy pre-made cards? Or is that playing into consumerism? Is the entire thing too consumerist? What constitutes meaningful? Is my gift just going to sit on the piano until my stepfather donates it to the free store? I suppose these are the same questions that come about at any gift-giving occasion. But the ambiguity of Mother’s Day stresses me out. My mother’s favourite gift from her gaggle of children I think was the year we, (as preteens and younger) all got up early (no easy feat) and cleaned the entire house. I’m not sure we’ve been able to replicate it – especially as adults where time is almost scarcer than money and our art projects less impressive. And then there are all the other mother figures: stepmother, grandmothers, step-grandmothers, family friends and mentors who also deserve acknowledgement as guiding forces (and trust me –they’re all forces). There’s the obvious, “tell them you love them.” Ok. But Hallmark tells me these women deserve all the gold of the rainbow and a carriage pulled by unicorns. On the other hand, my mother is on the dreamer side of practical and even she wouldn’t know what to do with a carriage pulled by unicorns. I have opted for the efficient solution: call “not it” in the group chat with my brothers and let them figure out how we’re going to acknowledge Mom. Though in all seriousness, happy Mother’s Day to the guiding forces of Bowen and beyond. ––Bronwyn Beairsto, Editor

General Store’s BYOB: bring your own bags
DEAR BOWEN ISLANDERS: Bring your own bag (box) the next time you shop at the General Store. A few years ago the store started charging for bags, which encouraged customers to bring their own, but it isn’t enough. Plastic grocery bags are used for an average of 12 minutes but take over 500 years to degrade in the landfill.
It is a small step but the store will be getting rid of single-use bags. There will be paper bags and new General Store bags for purchase. There usually are boxes available for heavier items such as cans and beverages. We are currently sourcing for biodegradable or reusable produce bags but encourage customers to use them sparingly. It

A very Bowen story

What do you do when your only car key falls down a culvert? After chatting with friends in Village Square last week, I accidently dropped it and watched with horror as it slid gently through the rungs of the manhole cover over the water system. At once a group gathered, everyone trying to figure out what to do, who to phone for help, how to find crowbars to lift the heavy cover. I just wrung my hands and moaned. Then two things happened. First, an unsung hero heaved the cover off. With a handy walking stick we realized that the base, underneath the murky water and thick sludge, was solid. Second, Shasta Martinuk and Brian Hoover walked past. Shasta took one look and said “I can do this!” She took off her jacket and, with people holding onto her legs and one arm, she dropped, with perfect pitch, into the hole. “Lower” she called out as we gingerly let her sink further. Just as in the Song Circle which Shasta leads, we gathered round with voices raised in various tones of oooh and ahhh while she searched for the right key. And found it! With great cries of thanks and delight and relief the cover was put back and we all walked off on our various ways…yet another memorable Bowen moment.

The grant application (for the plan) notes the tension between Bowen as a bedroom community for Vancouver and as a self-reliant community and the role of economy in such a distinction. The grant application also observes that much of Bowen’s economic information is anecdotal. As there wasn’t business licensing until this year, business statistics and information are limited. Such plan will deliver much-needed knowledge. Councillor Maureen Nicholson, who had a major part in putting together the grant application, said that this project will help support economic expansion

Why the “Community” in “community economic development?”
“Often, economic development focuses on trying to attract large employers to a community,” explained Nicholson. “So you’re bringing something from the outside and inserting it into the community, whereas community economic development is much more people focused. With Mother’s Day a few days away, one local business is looking to honour all women, not just traditional mothers. “There are some people who aren’t mothers, there are some people who no longer have mothers,” said Marie Neys, co-owner of Catching Stars Gallery in the Cove. “Women, especially, are a very creative, nurturing group of people and we thought it’d be fun to play up the inner goddess,” she said. “We’re all creators of something, be it a child, or a piece of artwork or a poem.” So the Gallery is featuring seven artists this week, one each day, each a “creator” or “goddess.” They started with Chelsea Mainwaring, creator of dragons. Walk into Catching Stars this week and you’ll meet a threeand-a-half-foot latex and clay dragon. Those tuned into the latest pop-culture phenomenons may get Game of Thrones vibes, and for good reason. Patching up a fashion problem BRONWYN BEAIRSTO
Editor
Islander Caroline Hurd wants you to think twice before tossing that wornout pair of leggings – they might just be part of your new-old favourite t-shirt. They could also be part of your new sustainable lifestyle. In an era of disposability and fast fashion, the Recycling Council of Ontario says that the average Canadian throws away 81 pounds of textiles every year and 85 per cent of all textiles end up in landfill. With this in mind, last month Hurd, a London (England)-trained fashion designer turned stay-at-home mom (though she still does custom women’s clothing orders), launched her new Etsy business, Modern Mending. She sells hand-illustrated patterns for patches and appliques – methods for sewing new life into a favourite pair of jeans or an unfortunately stained T-shirt. “The tutorials are simply made so somebody who’s never sewn before will be able to do [them],” explains Hurd. Hurd has spent more than a decade on the playgrounds of Bowen with one eye on her kids, the other on the needle and thread mending their clothing. Her patterns spring not only from necessity (fixing the inevitable holes in children’s clothing) but also the fashion runways of her former life. Patterns range from skull knee patches (ostensibly for children) to “Love” stencils for the stain-attracting chest area. All the patterns so far are under $10 and illustrations guide sewers through the process.
BRONWYN BEAIRSTO, PHOTO
Caroline Hurd models her “Love” t-shirt applique. “For me, not knowing how to sew is a bit like not knowing how to cook,” says
Hurd. “So this is another way to ease people back into the habit of sewing and fixing their clothes.” “The first time you’re going to do it, obviously, it’s a bit of a big project. But after that it takes two hours to make and you’ve got the pattern. You know how to do it,” she says, noting as well the therapeutic and meditative benefits of hand stitching. Sprinkled throughout the patterns are quick tricks learned from Hurd’s years in the fashion industry and sustainability tips, such as choosing cotton thread rather than a polyester blend, when repairing cottonwear. In the sustainability thread, Hurd is a believer in the cradle to cradle philosophy where products are in a closed-loop system – nothing is wasted. Biological products can degrade in nature and technological products can be recycled. In fashion, cradle to cradle requires refraining from blending non-organic and organic materials (like the ever-popular polyester-cotton combination) as they’re neither recyclable nor degradable. Hurd says that Modern Mending is her way of lobbying for change in the fashion industry and of making people rethink how they consume. “The industry is not going to change until people are aware of the problem. You know, it’s a question of offer and demand,” she says. Hurd has eight designs in her shop with plenty more to come. Most can be done with a needle and thread, though at least one is just for sewing machines. For more information visit Etsy.com/ ca/shop/ModernMending.
Presenting stories and food of Sri Lanka JAQUELINE MASSEY

The opportunity to visit a foreign place, and to be fortunate enough to connect with local people, share food with them, and hear their stories, is a true gift. Kate Coffey and I were given that gift when we recently spent time in Sri Lanka, volunteering with BIZ+, a program sponsored by an American-based dairy cooperative and funded by USAID. Last November and December, Kate returned to the South Asian island country where she had already spent a year in in 2017. She continued her work there as a business consultant, working with a variety of small and medium size enterprises receiving international aid. I jumped at the invitation to spend December in the land formerly known as Ceylon, to assist in collecting a number of human-interest stories focused on those who have directly benefited from the BIZ+ program. We returned from our travels impressed by the beauty of Sri Lanka and the warmth and resilience of its people, who have endured so much, including the recent tragic Easter weekend attack of terrorists who claimed more than 250 lives. On Saturday, May 18, we will present the highlights from our stay in the stunning country, located in the Indian Ocean to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian Sea. We will talk about our work in the culturally rich, politically-troubled republic that has a documented history spanning 3,000 years. And we will serve a number of delectable dishes, a sampling Sri Lankan cuisine. The event is a fundraiser for the Vanni Resource Self-Development Organization, a women’s cooperative that operates a restaurant on a main highway linking the central district of the island to the North. Tickets are $20 at the Gallery @ Cove Commons and online at tasteofsrilanka.brownpapertickets.com. The event is at the Library Annex at 6 p.m. Seating is limited.

Bowen Vet implementing “fear free”practices CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Bowen Vet, once its renovation and recertification is complete, likely in early June, will offer 24-hour on-call emergency services, as well as routine business hours services. These include X-rays, full surgery, endoscopy, bloodwork, dentistry and more. Ritchie will be the only vet at the clinic. Born and raised in Ohio, Ritchie says that she didn’t always want to be a vet: she started out in fashion design and art history. She worked as museum education director and for the Museum at FIT (the Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City before testing the waters of animal care, working as a kennel assistant on the weekends. “I was cleaning poop and doing all the yucky stuff, right? And I loved it,” says Ritchie. “I thought this is this right. This is the right fit.” So Ritchie attended Ross University School in St. Kitts (in the Caribbean) for her vet training (as a mature student the accelerated program was attractive) and did her clinical year at Texas A&M. After school, Ritchie moved back to New York, where she worked in an emergency clinic for three years. “So I was doing whole the whole overnights [thing],” she says. “You learn a lot of stuff really fast when you’re doing emergency. So that that also helps with the emergency aspect of [Bowen] Island.” In 2014, Ritchie moved to Calgary and worked at an emergency clinic there before she had her now-three-yearold son (Bowen’s newest fan). After moving to Vancouver, Ritchie worked at Cats Only in feline medicine and then at the Shaughnessy Vet Hospital in Port Coquitlam. Now she lives on Bowen and she describes Bowen Vet as a “labour of love.” Ritchie and administrator Karis Clayton have spent the last month getting the clinic ready for reopening. Bowen Vet needs to get re-accredited with the College of Veterinarians of B.C. and Ritchie and Clayton are taking the opportunity to make some changes. The walls are a soft green palette and the furniture pet friendly. Ritchie is implementing “fear free” practices to make visits less nerve-wracking for pet and owner alike. “[We] tried to make a really concerted effort to make it

Bowen’s new vet Dr. Midge Ritchie, Sacha (the dog) and hotel administrator Karis Clayton are nearly ready to open Bowen Vet 2.0. still a full service hospital but also a more pleasant experience to come in,” says Ritchie. Not only is Ritchie shedding her white coat (white coat syndrome is apparently thing in animals as well as humans) but the exam table is folded up against the wall. Ritchie plans to do the dog exams sitting on the floor or on the ottoman. Cats can be examined while perched on the series of ledges next to the window (glass safely dividing cats from the bird feeder outside) or in a wicker box (cats love boxes). Bowen Vet is a major undertaking for the new islander but one she says she’s up for. “[It’s] one of those things where I think the island deserves it and the pets of the islands deserve it,” says Ritchie. Bowen Vet 2.0 will also feature a treat bar, with samples
of all the treats for sale at the clinic, and pets (chaperoned by owners) are encouraged to drop by, for no reason other than to get a treat, a pat and a hello. What can Boweners expect in terms of care for their pets? Ritchie says that she believes in education and communication, for prevention, in diagnosis and throughout treatment “When I’ve diagnosed your animal with a disease or with something that can sound devastating, I always tell people that we’re partners now,” she says. “This is sort of a team, and we are, you (the owner) and me and our staff, is part of the treatment team for that for that animal.” Bowen Vet is slated to reopen in early June, and when it does, there’ll be a party.
Patient of the Week MEET AKUOUJI Akuouji, seen here with his sibling, paid a visit to emergency with labored breathing and abdominal pain. Bloodwork, x-rays, and an ultrasound diagnosed insulinoma- a common condition of older ferrets. These pancreatic tumors cause an increase in the secretion of insulin, which leads to severely low blood sugar. Akuouji went home with some medications to control his condition and he has been doing very well since discharge.
Proud to serve North and West Vancouver and Sea to Sky with comprehensive emergency & general veterinary services.

Bowen Business Profile West Coast Micro Builds: Robbie Savoie micro-building on Bowen Like a blank canvas, space invites creativity. And the less space we have, the more creative we tend to be.
The short answer? Everyone has been a mentor to me. The trick is putting ego aside and accepting knowledge.
With the building microtechture movement, people are awakening to the idea that less can be more: in our buildings, our structures, our surroundings.
West Coast Micro Builds’ current and future projects include the new Nectar Yoga Retreat, several secondary suites, a music studio, two art studios, a tree house and some really cool custom sheds.
In microtechture we use fewer materials, have a smaller footprint and allow nature to shine. Not to mention being more affordable and requiring less time than conventional construction. With West Coast Micro Builds, I address custom needs. The space adaptations you won’t find in conventional homes or work spaces. Multipurpose is our mantra, meaning using less space to do more. We aim for less stress and more time for the fun things in life. Our aim is simple: to live simple! Through five years of renovating homes on Bowen Island, I’ve found solutions for people’s true needs. In the design stage we examine fresh alternatives, new technologies and new standards and then we make your ideas come to life. It’s a collaboration of minds that brings projects to fruition, to me reminiscent of a great orchestra. I’m often asked, “Where did you learn all this stuff?”
And of course, renovations are always fun (I can’t help but want to make things better). With a new business, I am so grateful to have so much support from other companies like Sorenson Design Studio, Kiwi Innovation and the super people at the Irly Building Centre. Help from many of Bowen’s greats, like Coast Island, Quickway and Murcon, has propelled me to where I am today. And it’s not all work. We have a great time building and creating and soon we will be hosting a monthly carpentry for kids workshop, a teen scholarship program as well as a land art instalment. Curious about microtechture? Come by our Snug Cove office at 449 Bowen Trunk Rd. Share your latest micro build idea or check out our awesome architecture library.

Rising voices
The Bowen Community Choir spring concerts last weekend featured nearly 50 islandvoices. Thespiritedcollection of songs included the Rolling Stones , Billy Joel (and a bunch of other artists) and concluded with the Queen classic Bohemian Rhapsody. Accompanists Sheilagh Sparks on piano, Leo Pederson on guitar, Cam Stephens on drums, Brian Hoover on percussion and Phil Adkins on guitar made Bowen the envy of other towns’ community choirs.

IRLY BIRD gives back
It has been five years now that Bowen Building Centre has offered families with young children delightful Saturday mornings with “Hotdogs and Hammers.” Three to eight year olds and “their” adults have seasonal fun and build everything from birdhouses to flower planters and pumpkin carving in October. Anna and Lena, spirited women from the Building Centre, run the show with support from the Bowen Children’s Centre and advertising and registration is through the Rec Centre and Bowen Island Community Recreation. Just wanted to thank you, IRLY, for another great Saturday morning! P.S. Personally, I go for the hotdogs which are delicious!

Bowen’s almost own (and maybe favourite) Bluegrass band, The High Barn Gang, is returning to Tir-na-nOg Theatre Friday, May 17. We’re celebrating close to 10 years of playing old time bluegrass music for the sheer joy of it. Bandleader Colin Nairne, a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge of the genre, created the band to have a vehicle to play the music he loved. He assembled his favourite friends and collaborators, Bowen’s Barney Bentall, wife Wendy Bird, Kirby and Dave Barber, Rob Becker, me and as a special treat for this show, Tom Taylor. The gorgeous four-part harmonies alone are worth the admission. Doors open at 7 p.m., show is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at Phoenix and online at highbargang.brownpapertickets. com. As Colin is famous for saying when planning rehearsals, “It will be fun. There will be snacks.” (Of course, in this case it means delicious cookies and treats baked by Jack and Julie!) We look forward to seeing you on May 17. Bowen’s rugby boys fundraising ANDREA BASTIN

Bowen Island’s young athletes are shaking things up in competitions at home and abroad. We have gymnasts headed off to Europe this summer and athletes securing full scholarships at universities around the globe. Nine Bowen Island rugby players, as part of the Rockridge High School rugby program, have the opportunity to compete in Argentina next spring. Playing sports at this level requires enormous commitment and athletes often miss out on opportunities due to their dedication to the sport. These boys have had to forego other extracurricular activities and have shown an inordinate amount of commitment to the team to secure a spot on the travel team. It has taken commitment to an arduous practice schedule while keeping up with schoolwork and other personal commitments (from tutors to orthodontists, they have taken incredible care to manage their schedules – this has not been about Mom and Dad making it happen by any stretch!) Traveling together has a powerful impact on young athletes. The challenges and life changing experiences afforded through travel will remain with these kids throughout their lifetimes. Not all youth are afforded the opportunity for cross-cultural connection, and playing with teams from other countries can highlight how sport impacts different cultures (hello, Hockey Night in Canada!) New friends, new languages and exposure to new cultures broaden youths’ worldviews. By playing sports in high school athletes are pushed to develop grit and resilience, openness to new ideas and goal setting –some critical skills for adulthood. To that end, our rugby players are beginning a full season of fundraising. Please consider supporting some of their fundraising initiatives: May 18: Car wash between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the satellite fire hall on Adams Road near Tunstall Bay. Bring your filthy vehicle and your appetite as the BBQ will be cooking up hotdogs. June 1 onward at the ball field: hot dogs at the ball games. June 1 onward (while supplies last): firewood sales (contact Andrea at 604-834-9027 to order and for details). These nine players’ goal is to raise $4500 per player. And if your wood box is full, your car is clean, you don’t eat hotdogs or can’t stand baseball, please feel free to make a cash donation to the Rockridge Rugby Team account at First Credit Union. Thank you for helping turn this opportunity into an incredible reality!

Women’s Golf Day is a global golf initiative launched in 2016 to celebrate girls and women playing golf and learning the skills that last a lifetime (www.womensgolfday.com). This year the Bowen Island Golf Club is participating and is excited to offer a free event at the golf course on June 4 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Our mission is to engage, empower and support women and girls in our community through golf. Golf, rentals, balls, and tees will be free. Clubs and power carts are limited. If you would like to reserve, please contact the Pro Shop at 604-947-4653. This event is for all Bowen women and high school students, whether you know how to play golf or not. It’s a time to gather at our amazing course and enjoy some outdoor activity. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., participants will golf in a relaxed scramble format, with beginners and experienced golfers playing together as a foursome. Experienced golfers will be happy to share their clubs with a new player in their group. All beginners and those new to golf will tee up each shot in the fairway until they get to the green. Teeing up makes it so much easier to hit the ball! After a bit of exercise, we will relax on the clubhouse deck and get to enjoy each other’s company. Beverages and light snacks will be available for purchase. Pre-registration is required, online or by phone, through BI Recreation: ca.apm.activecommunities.com/bowencommunityrec/Activity_Search/3569 or 604947-2216. The deadline to sign up is May 28 at 4 p.m. And to make the game even more fun for beginners, we are offering a mentor/mentee opportunity. A novice will be paired with an experienced golfer who will support the mentee in learning the game in an encouraging and fun environment over four playing sessions. BIGC will support the program through the summer so that the pair can play together three more times, and the mentee will play at a reduced rate ($15). If you would like to sign up to be a mentor or mentee, or would like further information about this event, please contact Lisa Avery (lisa.avery.slp@gmail.com; 604-947-0067).
