PRIDE Bowen Island was decked out for its first ever public Pride event last Saturday.

The Pride Ride, Stride & Picnic fell perfectly on the first day of Pride Month, drawing hundreds of people throughout the day to morning activities at the Farmers Market, a 200+ person strong parade through Snug Cove, and finally a community picnic at the Bowfest Field. It was a small group who came to the Open House on the first Saturday of the month, but an interesting discussion, as always. The stage was still up for Theatre On The Isle’s Chekov production so we couldn’t have accommodated many more, plus it was sunny and there was the Pride Parade so local politics was not on everyone’s mind.

We started with questions about Metro’s park at the Cape and a rumour that Metro had opened up a conversation with the Bowen Conservancy about acquiring the land from Metro. Councilors Alex Jurgenson and Tim Wake were present, and neither they nor I had heard that rumour and confirmed that nothing had been mentioned to council. If the rumour is true, that would be a very interesting development, but there was nothing to report on the Cape

There was a question whether Delta council’s removal of George Harvie from his position as Chair of the Metro Board would have any effect on Metro’s plans for Cape Roger Curtis Harvie was a strong supporter of the idea of camping at The Cape and pushed hard for this Bowen council to vote to rezone

to allow for camping, but it is much too early in the political machinations at Metro to predict what if any changes might happen once a new chair is chosen.

There was also a question whether the resignation of Liam Edwards, Bowen’s chief administrative officer, would be unsettling for the Muni staff and business. None of the councilors at this meeting felt that would be the case Change can be unsettling, but the staff team is in very good shape and we have already agreed on an interim CAO, Dennis Back, who has helped as our interim CAO a few years ago, and is familiar with many of the people still on staff, and our community.

A job description has been posted and an executive search started. The process is to advertise widely, consider all the candidates, short-list those we think are best suited to our present and future needs (your input is welcome), and have all or a delegation of councilors interview those shortlisted While our challenges seem daunting, we are not unique from many other communities, and in better shape than some. It’s a competitive market and we are confident we can attract some talented applicants

There was a very brief mention that Bowen has received another $200,000+ grant from Translink for the next phase of

The Bowen Island Slopitch League was overloaded... so there’s a new team in town! The Overloaders are the expansion team for the 2024 season, named for their overloaded roster status, their desire to load the bases this season, and of course a common Bowen ferry ailment during the summer Consisting of some veteran players, but also many folks who are new to the sport, the team already has a few games under their belt and everyone has been having a lot of fun down at Snug Cove Field. Come check them out, and the other 6 teams in the ever-growing league too, during the season and year-end tournament over the next 3 months The Overloaders roster is made up of (pictured) Shannon Farley, Andrew Born, Erik Miller, Jesse Lyon, Dan Loucks, Alex Kurial, Tim Hausch, Jonathan Ricci, Rachel Klinger, Robin Birney, Vanessa Gustafson, Agata Cibinska, Rich Ralph, & (not pictured) Steve Kwon, Jessie O’Neill, Adrienne Gruber, Diane Salema, & Jessie Slater. / MJ Davey photo

the Multi-Use Path – from Artisan Square to Grafton Lake. This area is the most difficult technically to build on, the land is not Muni-owned and there are considerable concerns about sensitive wetlands. It is one of the most challenging sections of our Active Transportation Plan.

One attendee, who had been in favour of incorporation 20 years ago, commented that he now believes he was wrong: financial viability is so difficult with limits to taxes from property He wondered why he had not foreseen the problems. He was suggesting un-incorporating, and asking if we would be happier now if we had not incorporated There were several arguments against that idea: Metro making decisions for us was “unthinkable”, but in the end, I do not think he was not convinced.

Capacity – fundamentally water, but lifestyle and community - was mentioned in tandem with development “mistakes”. That sequed beautifully into an Official Community Plan (OCP) review discussion. [BTW – a recent meeting of the OCP steering committee was confidence building – we have a great group working on the process and gathering information]. Sustainability must be a priority for our future – physically and financially.

One tenet needs to be localization of services and the suggestion for an effort to reincarnate a better plan for composting on-island. Potable water, the most important variable, is the place for planning to

start. Information sharing and transparency of the discussions and decision-making are essential. High expectations for urban amenities need to be balanced with budget realities and healthier rural benefits That was, generally, the bulk of our conversations

I’d like to end this piece with a topic that was not part of the Open House discussion. June 5, 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Islands Trust. A little bit of history: in October, 1969 the Social Credit government, worried about the sudden proliferation of small lots on North Pender, Mayne, Mudge, Bowen and Salt Spring islands, and predictions of intensive, private development on all the Gulf Islands, instituted a 10 acre minimum lot size limit. Studies were conducted A need to “limit commercial and industrial land use, to ensure continuing recreational opportunities, to control and co-ordinate water transportation, and to recognize the potential shortage of potable water” was identified.

In May, 1974, the Islands Trust Act was tabled in the Legislative Assembly, hotly debated for a month, passed on June 4, 1974 and proclaimed the next day. Development pressures continued. In 1982, Bill Vander Zalm, as Minister of Municipal Affairs, despite assurances to the Trust, added one tiny line to a proposed Bill 72: “The Islands Trust Act is repealed”

KAPLUN

Catching Stars Gallery

Get ready to celebrate with Catching Stars Gallery, a well-established cooperative gallery located in the heart of Snug Cove, as we get ready to mark our sixth anniversary! Come join the festivities!

The Gallery has welcomed in many amazing artists during the last six years. To date, there are 50 artists represented at Catching Stars Gallery, with more than half of those being from Bowen Island.

We have recently welcomed ceramic artist Steph Takagi from the interior of BC, who creates hand carved pottery in striking patterns and colours, in the form of mugs, tea cups, bowls and more. A perfect series to gift and add to your collection. Maria Ida Designs is also new to the gallery and is a Vancouver-based blown glass production company Founder Maria Struk makes colourful objects for the home with a joyful, unpretentious feel. Every piece is hand-blown, melding creativity, danger, science and molten glass into one-of-akind pieces

Our Feature Artist for the month of June is Deb Stringfellow, a published photographer living and working on Bowen Island. She has created her signature line of jewellery with semi-precious stones and beads, carefully handpicking each gem from places across the globe. Each is hand-crafted and tells its own story. Her collection is featured for the month of June She also has a whimsical line of pet amulets called Pawsitively Precious made for your precious pets. Enter the draw for a chance to win one of these delightful pieces for your special furry friend. Also for the month of June, we celebrate Artists who are also Fathers! Featured are

works by Gilt Studio’s David Graff, leather creations by Joel Weise, beautiful and functional turned wood bowls, candle holders and serving boards by John Topham, paintings by Nick Jennings, gorgeous glass by Robert Parkes and extraordinary wood carvings by Shane Tweten.

We are thrilled to welcome Shelley Koke and Dayna Kreutzer (Purdy) into the Catching Stars fold as our newest Associates. Shelley Koke is a painter who loves nature photography and creating art in various mediums. Still teaching in the elementary classroom, she is never more passionate and excited than when leading and inspiring young artists to create their own works Shelley has discovered a joy and passion for painting and playing with colours and pigments.

Dayna Kreutzer is a self-taught artist living on Bowen Island with her family. Dayna creates unique earrings and pendants; from delicate filigree and mandala patterns, to bold geometric shapes. Seasonal and home decor pieces feature precision inlaid wood designs

We have a few options for being a part of our Cooperative Gallery. For example, our Associates receive a larger percentage of their art sales in exchange for shifts in the gallery and having a dedicated space to display their work. This model allows the gallery to be open daily and gives locals and tourists alike the opportunity to meet the artists, purchase unique artworks and support the creative community.

Coming up in July, our Featured Artists will be Dave Brewin with his hand turned wood and resin vessels, along with Fibre Arts by Natasha Boskic August featured artists are Jennifer Love with her many layered gelli plate and mono-printed, collaged paintings, cards and journals and Janna Kumi with her intricate drawings and collage inspired by

the bark of trees.

Featured Artists have the opportunity to showcase their work for one month at the Gallery with extra marketing and promotions of their work Feature artists receive a larger percentage of their art sales (90 per cent). It is a great opportunity to showcase and sell more of your art, have an event related to the show and introduce new collections to our clientele. We are now booking featured artists for the fall Interested in finding out more? Please get in touch with us - co-owners Emilie and Kathleen. Our website has more information in the Submissions section.

Enter our contest on social media to win prizes donated by some of our amazing artists including limited edition prints, textiles, jewellery, and more! Five decades of Islands Trust

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5

However, following intense opposition from residents in the Trust, plus all regional districts, UBCM and editorials in all the major newspapers, that effort failed. A province-wide commission to investigate support for the Trust followed and the administration of the Trust was strengthened.

In 1990, the Islands Trust Fund, today the Islands Trust Conservancy (ITC), was created with a mandate to protect ecolog-

ically sensitive areas. The ITC has accumulated almost 20 per cent of the land in the Trust under its protection. Today, a new 21st Century Trust Policy statement, in response to our increased mandate to cooperate with First Nations people and incorporate the principles of reconciliation, is about to be tabled. We have much to celebrate for our 50th Anniversary at our July quarterly meeting on Salt Spring Island.

Call for Community Spirit Award nominations

How do we recognize the people in the community who make a positive difference? The Community School Association continues the Association of Community Education in British Columbia (ACEbc) tradition of annually recognizing people in the community with once in a lifetime awards of recognition.

It is important to take time to recognize the many big and small ways in which people give back to the community, and to thank everyone who helps to improve and serve our community as volunteers, educators, and leaders. We are lucky to have many people who go the extra mile These awards have been handed out since at least 1992 and the binder filled with the award recipients is a glowing testament to the decades of invaluable contributions to the community by its many educators, volunteers and youth.

We are asking for your stories of people who have made a positive difference in the community and the community school. It doesn’t have to be long, at least 1-2 bullet points describing why you are inspired to nominate the person or organization.

Is there someone in the community who has made it a better place that you would like to be recognized? Nominations are now open and the categories are:

Bowen Island Community School (BICS) Volunteer(s) of the Year Award, Community Youth Leadership Award, Community Resident, Agency, Organization or Individual Community Spirit Award, and the Educator Award, which is presented to an individual or team of teachers, or educators, of a school or organization who have rendered exemplary service, support, and leadership in the development of community education at the school, centre or neighbourhood level.

Award recipients are invited to the BICS Year End Assembly on Tuesday, June 25 at 11:20 am to receive a certificate and a gift of thanks donated by the Community

PRIDE STRIDE & RIDE

It was a big turnout for the island’s first public Pride event during the Pride Stride, Ride & Picnic on June 1. The fun started with activity tables at the Farmers Market which was followed by a colourful stroll (or ride) down the Multi-Use Path to the Bowfest Field. Once there games, music, and of course food was on the menu for the rest of the day. The entire day of celebrations was a vibrant show of support for Bowen’s 2SLGBTQ+ community.

The volunteer-run event was made possible by funding from the Literacy Task Group, and supported by Bowen Island Community School Parent Advisory Committee, Bowen Island Farmers Market, Island Pacific School, Bowen Island Library, Knick Knack Nook, Village Baker, Tell Your Friends, Bowen Island Children’s Centre, and Qmunity.
