OLD GENERAL STORE CELEBRATES THE CENTURY MARK
TINA NIELSEN
Bowen Island Public Library
Last Saturday August 10, the weather was beautiful and the community came out, some in 1920’s costumes, to celebrate the 100th birthday of our most iconic heritage building - the Old General Store.
Between Noon and 3 pm more than 300 people stopped by to play games (thank you Bowen Cidery, Bowen Island Community School, and Community Recreation), to be entertained (thank you Bowen Jazz Quartet, Docs’n’Socs Pipe Band, Paul Stewart, and Charlie the Magician), and to mingle and reminisce with neighbours and some friends not seen for many years.
Thank you, David Smith, for making the 5,000 km trip back to Bowen to tell us about the Bowen Island Park and Store Use Society (BIPASUS or the Save the Store Society), the people involved and the work that went into saving the OGS from demolition in 1978.
Plenty of Festivities to Celebrate Century of Old General Store
DOZENS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS MADE THE SPECIAL DAY POSSIBLE
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Don Toffaletto added further details about BIPASUS via email, and I’m sure many others in attendance shared stories and memories of their volunteer work with each other
Thank you to Mayor Andrew Leonard for offering some deeper history of the original Union Steamship Company and for recognizing the importance of this unique municipal building. Thank you to Peter Vaisbord for speaking on behalf of the Heritage Commission and to Adam Taylor for sharing stories of his childhood and the key role of his great aunt, Ellen Dorman in the Save the Store Society.
Despite the heat, we managed to get everyone in attendance out by the road squinting into the sun, to recreate a com-
munity photo like those taken several times over the last 40 years. Many thanks to Tim Hausch for providing a fantastic vantage point and to John Dowler for being willing to be lifted up to that vantage point to take the wonderful photo you see below.
Along with the photos we were very lucky to have the drone piloting skills of Phil Gregory who captured the gathering from even further up – many thanks Phil for stepping in almost last minute! The photo above will join photos from 1984, 1994 and 2014 recording the history of the building and the changes in community and landscape. Let’s hope we will have another group photo in 2034.
After the photo everyone shared in 100 cupcakes, baked by the talented Shura
Okell, and had a look at the slide show, outdoor heritage walk, art display and memory wall in the Library. The art, memory board and heritage walk will remain up over the next few weeks, so come by the library if you missed it on Saturday
Events like this seem to just magically pop-up, but of course, there are many planners, volunteers and funders that make it all happen. The vision for the decorations was thanks to the talented Tracey Hearst, with flowers from Home Farm Gardens and extra help and more flowers provided by Ender Tan.
Suzan Phillipe arranged for vendors for take away picnics and for the birthday cupcakes. General help anywhere we asked was provided by Susan Geist, Andrew Todd and Suzan Phillipe along with a number of kind and willing spouses – thank you all!
Kids activities were managed by Marysia McGilvray, Brynna Hourihan, Lucie Robichaud, Anita Schuller, and Marion from the Museum and Archives Thanks to all of you and to the remaining Library staff (Leo Pedersen and Mia Casalese) who gave their all on an exciting but chaotic day.
Thank you to our funders: Bowen Island Municipality, Knick Knack Nook, Bowen Island Literacy Task Group, Friends of the Bowen Island Library, Bowen Island Heritage Preservation Association, Bowen Island Museum and Archives, and the Bowen Island Library Foundation – we just couldn’t have done it without your financial support.
We are also grateful for the participation of Glenn and Meredith Cormier at Tippy’s and for donations from the “New” General Store coordinated by Nancy Lee.

This timewhenitreally matteredthe Diggers came outontop to setupa final againstthe Shakers, who had upset the Cruisersinthe other semifinal The Diggers flew outtoafaststarttoopen upan11-2 lead and, while theShakers made things interestingwith an explosiveinning tocut things to 11-7, therewerenomore runsafterthatas the veteranside calmed the gamedowntolockuptheir title push
We askedDiggers Catcher TomWoodward a few questionsabout the weekend, and his team’scontinuedpresenceonthe trophy nameplateoverthe past nine seasons.
Q: What makesthis team so good year after year?
A: We just have an unbelievablemix of guysthatabsolutelyloveplaying together.Ithink everyplayeronour teamhas
an importantroletoplayinour success and embraces that role to the fullest. We always emphasizedefensiveplay, and smart ball when it comestothe tournament. One or tworun innings arenever goingtokill youcometourney time, but when the big inningshappenand the crowd starts going crazy, the momentumcan really swinga game in oneteams favour, solimitingthose biginnings with smart, defensivebaseball is always key… it doesn’t hurt having afew guys that arecapable of hittingaballover my parent’s houseonthe roster as well!
Q: Tell me alittleabout what you sawfrom your pitchingstaff?
A: Adam (Woodward) and Dan(Guillon) have been dominantpitchersinthisleague fora long, long time. Not only aretheyboth greatindividually, butthe twoofthem seem to work especiallywellasatandem.Their synergy is offthe charts, and youalways know you’re goingtoget strong pitching when eitherone of them is on the mound.
Valentyna Gabinyetova photos
It really gives us an inherent edge in every game we play. Erik Miller is new to our team this year and frankly, we probably underestimated what his ceiling as a pitcher can be. He really opened our eyes on Sunday morning, and I am looking very forward to watching him develop on the mound.
Q: Which individual performances on the team stood out to you?
A: Well, what can you say about Dan Cowper’s performance on the weekend? He was incredible. I have played with Dan for a long time, and he seems to truly love every aspect of the game. He is constantly working at perfecting the craft of hitting and I think
he saw the fruits of his labour this weekend.
The play of Eric Ander and Paul Whitecotton stand out to me as well. They perfectly epitomize Digger ball. Hard working and committed to the little things. The timely hits that they gave us made the difference this weekend and they were such a blast to watch Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Aaron Johnstone He has been one of if not the best players in this league for 18 seasons now! He doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon does he?
Q: What are your takeaways from Tournament Weekend?
A: It’s just always such an incredible
weekend on Bowen, and a weekend that I personally look forward to every single year The way the community embraces the league, and this weekend speaks volumes about what a special place Bowen Island is Sometimes it’s almost indescribable to explain how special this league is to someone who doesn’t understand. The Shakers hosted a solid beer garden this year and that helped a lot for bringing everyone together for a good time
When you look around at all the athletes on every team, and the amount of younger guys coming in, it’s pretty plain to see that the future of the league is in good hands Of course, my brother Adam as the league pres-
ident has done a great job of honouring the rich history of this league while embracing the next generation, and I am just so excited to see where this league goes in the future. Hopefully, we can be writing about a 2025 Diggers Championship season as well!
We’ll have more tournament thoughts from Tom online this week, along with many more photos from Valentyna and James. For myself, this is a league I am incredibly proud to be involved with I’ve met so many great people and have such a fun time down at the ball field each and every year Congratulations Diggers, and can’t wait to see all of you back here in April!
