WELCOME

TO BOWEN & COLLINSVILLE Welcome to Bowen & Collinsville…there is something for everyone in our beautiful region, and visitors and locals are spoilt for choice with the diversity of attractions, natural environments and local events. Both communities have tremendous spirit, and are immensely proud of the region, and on their behalf we welcome you to the region and hope you enjoy your stay.

Collinsville is the Pit Pony Capital of Australia and residents offer a warm welcome to all travellers. The Coalface Museum highlights the perils of the mining industry and pays a poignant tribute to the miners who lost their lives on the 13th October, 1954. The historical Bowen River Hotel and the Bogie River Bush House are worth a visit to enjoy good old fashioned country charm and service.

Bowen is renowned for its award winning beaches. Snorkelling at Rose Bay, swimming at Horseshoe Bay, stand up paddleboarding at Gray’s Bay, walk along Queen’s Beach or run with your dogs along King’s Beach plus there are plenty of other secluded beaches to discover and explore.

Wherever you go, whatever you do, we hope that your Bowen Collinsville experience creates great memories, ones that you would love to relive over and over again.

Bowen has an impressive number of lookouts with Flagstaff Hill being the most popular. Be prepared to have your breath taken away with the magnificent 360 degree views across the top of Bowen and out to the top of the Whitsunday Islands. Every photo taken from the lookout is postcard worthy. Bowen has a very rich and interesting history, depicted in murals throughout the town. The Bowen Historical Museum, one of the best regional museums in the state is well worth a visit.

Bowen is very well known for its diverse industries; mining, fishing and agriculture. In fact, Bowen is considered the salad bowl of Australia for the quality crops grown here! However, Bowen is most famous for the Kensington Pride Mango and in more recent times the R2E2 and other varieties. Bowen’s ‘BIG MANGO’ structure was erected on the 25th May 2002 to acknowledge and consolidate the association the area has with the fruit.

FISHING & DIVING ONE OF BOWEN’S BIGGEST ATTRACTIONS

Fishing Fishing is one of Bowen's biggest attractions, with its numerous creek systems, coral studded islands, offshore reefs, and most importantly, abundant fish life.

Diving Bowen is one of the few places on the Queensland coast where you can walk off the beach, head underwater to see the living reef and an abundance of marine life to be discovered.

Snorkelling Within a very short distance of the beach you will see reef fish swimming amongst the hard and soft corals on our fringing reefs.

Don’t Have a Boat? There are plenty of land based options including the Bowen Jetty, the rocks at the southern end of Kings Beach and the rocky outcrops at Horseshoe, Grays and Rose Bay. Whiting are caught around the mouths in the town area including Magazine Creek near the boat harbour, Doughty’s Creek at the western edge of town and Sandhills Creek at Kings Beach.

Offshore Fishing

ROSE BAY

Bowen has a multitude of offshore fishing spots, including the fringing reefs around our inshore islands. These islands range between 1 and 18 NM from the Bowen Harbour and are named North Head, Stone, Middle, Gloucester and Holbourne. They all have abundant reef for both line and spear fishing.

MURRAY BAY HORSESHOE BAY

8

Scuba Diving

Bowen’s answer to the Great Barrier Reef in swimming distance from the Shore

The most popular locations are Horseshoe, Rose and Murray Bays, where the depths are only 6 to 7 metres. If you are looking for more depth and maybe a wreck dive or two, you will need a boat.

BOWEN HISTORICAL MUSEUM STEP BACK IN TIME

Bowen’s Museum

Bowen’s Role In World War II

Our museum has been described as one of Queensland's best. Much of Bowen's pioneer history has been preserved and is on display at the museum, in 22 Gordon St. It has been described as one of the best regional museums in the state.

The Coral Sea Museum located at the Bowen Aerodrome is a smaller museum and honours Bowen’s association with Catalina Flying Boats. An interpretative Centre commemorating the Catalina is also situated at the Front Beach foreshore.

Early Years Originally occupied by the Girudala people, the first European to set eyes on the present site of Bowen, was Captain Cook, when he sailed the coast and named the mountainous island off Bowen’s eastern shores Cape Gloucester, thinking it was part of the mainland. He also named Edgecumbe Bay, which boasts the deep waters that attracted Bowen’s first European settlers who were seeking to develop a northern port. Bowen was declared a town in 1861. 10

Machinery Collection Local farmer Bill Ashman’s large privately owned collecton is opened to th public by arrangement and is only a 10-minute drive from Bowen. Visits can be arranged with Mr Ashman on 4785 2210. He is extremely knowledgeable, knows how every piece works, and you will get an authentic history lesson.

BOWEN’S

FRONT BEACH

Bowen’s Front Beach is the undisputed focal point of Bowen, a major attraction for both tourists and locals. With the historic Bowen jetty splendid in the background, the foreshore precinct has been transformed into a premier recreational area. It’s a space that is regularly enjoyed by people from all walks of life, backpackers travelling around Australia, couples having an early morning walk, teenagers using the skate park, CBD workers enjoying a quiet spot for lunch, and families using the playground facilities. Families use the large grassy areas to enjoy barbecue dinners and to relax while kids play on the nearby playground or ride bikes and scooters along the wide tracks. A very popular Water Park sits close to the playground and amenities block. A wheelchair friendly swing completes the playground equipment ensuring every child, regardless of their ability can experience fun at the foreshore. The soundshell and open space is frequently

used for all kinds of events, including Australia Day and New Year’s Eve celebrations, concerts and cultural festivals. A Tourist Information Kiosk sits behind the stage, and beside it is a display housed in huge glass panels, recognising Bowen’s involvement in the filming of Australia: The Movie, Bowen’s second mango as well as other information about the town and region. The Catalina Interpretive Centre celebrates the historical significance of the site. It’s located beside the hardstand area where in World War 2, Catalinas were maintained and serviced before being redeployed. Information about Bowen’s involvement in World War II and images of the Catalinas are etched into large

glass panels which give the effect of the planes coming in to land on the bay when the viewer is looking at the images. It also includes a modern war memorial wall. The precinct is dotted with plaques that explain significant historical events that helped shape modern day Bowen. Mature trees, shrubs and garden beds complete the stunning foreshore.

that you carry a large container of water with you while working.

Backpackers are made to feel welcome Weather plays an important role in harvesting, in Bowen with work opportunities, as some crops cannot be picked wet. If it rains lots of things to see and do, as well as a wide range of accommodation options on offer, to make your holiday experience a positive one.

work may not be available and your income may be temporarily affected. Wages are generally based on the volume of crop picked rather than the number of hours worked.

Accommodation includes dedicated backpacker establishments located within a short walking distance to the beach, town centre, shops, restaurants and pubs, and transport. There are also affordable caravan parks, guest houses and pubs to stay at. If you’re on a working holiday most venues can help you find work. Some run buses to and from farms. Being the second largest vegetable producer in Queensland means Bowen has work available during the season from April to November either planting, picking, sorting or packing. Experience is not necessary, many positions offer on-the-job training. However vegetable picking is physically demanding. Working conditions can be hot and dusty, so being fit and healthy is important. Early 6am starts are a common requirement of picking jobs. You will need to wear sunscreen, a collared shirt, wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent and sturdy footwear. It’s also recommended

MOLONGLE CREEK A PARADISE FOR FISHERMEN

Fishing is one of Whitsundays region’s biggest attractions, and a short drive north of Bowen, Molongle Creek offers great fishing, as well as access to Cape Upstart National Park that is only accessible by boat. If you have the time, you really should plan to stay for a few days, and Molongle Creek Tourist Caravan Park is worth considering. To get there turn right off the Bruce Highway onto Molongle Beach Road only 55 kilometres north of Bowen. The park caters for all who love fishing and crabbing and there’s plenty of parking for boats. The Molongle Creek Boat Club offers modern facilities and they are open to the public. There are four boat ramps that are well maintained all year round. Beside the ramps is a huge multipurpose area that includes showers, toilets, and a large covered area fitted out with barbecues. The club is continually working to improve access. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park surrounds Cape Upstart National Park and is only accessible by boat.

INDUSTRY INDUSTRY

COKE WORKS

FISHERIES

HORTICULTURE PRODUCTS

Bowen Coke Works supplies metallurgical coke to one of the world’s largest producer of lead for use in the lead smelter in Mount Isa. It produces up to 45,000 tonnes each year and operates within strict Department of Heritage and Protection environment controls. It was built in 1933 by the Queensland Government and is now owned by Glencore.

Bowen is Queensland’s second largest exporter of live coral trout and this industry is worth over $20 million to the local economy The red colour of our fish makes them the most sought after by the Chinese and the market price can vary from $32 to $64kg. The Bowen harbour has 2 unloading facilities that both sell to the local market. Aquaculture is also an important industry in the region with the Good Fortune Bay Fisheries operation north of Bowen producing 1500 tonnes of fin fish annually including Barramundi.

The Bowen and Gumlu region is the largest winter growing vegetable region in Australia and supplies both the domestic and exports markets with produce to the value of $450million dollars. The major commodities grown sice the 1930’s to this day are tomatoes, capsicums, mangoes, beans, sweet corn, melons and eggplant. The industry employs over 3200 skilled and unskilled workers during the season with a wide variety of career opportunities.

GRAZING

Bowen’s solar evaporation salt field and refinery at the entrance to the town, began operating in 1925, is one of a number owned and operated by Australian Saltworks in Australia.

PORT OF ABBOT POINT The Port of Abbot Point is one of Australia's most significant emerging bulk ports and is one of four ports in Qld that North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) is responsible for as a leading port authority. Located 25km north of Bowen. This port is vital to Australia's export trade. It achieved throughout 2014-2015 28,730,365 tonnes.

30

More than 25 million hectares of the Bowen and Collinsville region is devoted to producing beef cattle with an estimated 315,000 head of beef cattle roaming in 175 stations. Local cattle are sold to various markets including abattoirs up and down the coast, live export, to various feedlots, and restocker graziers.

This is Bowen’s very first Fire Engine which was purchased in 1923 by the Bowen Fire Brigade Board. In 2003 a vintage car collector knowing it’s history offered it for sale to the Bowen community and The Bowen Independent purchased it for $4000 and formed a committee under the leadership of the then mayor Mike Brunker for it’s restoration. The main drivers of the project were Paddy Brazil and Ron Perrin ably assisted by the Bowen Wood Turners Association and donations from many local businesses and it was presented back to the community commpletly restored and in running condition as part of The Bowen Independent’s Centenary celebrations on the 25th June 2003. It is now housed at the Bowen Independent office for all the see.

COLLINSVILLE The historic mining town of Collinsville is located 85km west of Bowen, about a 45 minute drive, situated in the foothills of the Clarke Range. The Collinsville Developmental Road will take you inland to an area rich in coal mining and grazing history. The Collinsville area was opened up as a grazing run in early 1861, Strathmore Station being the first in the district. During the 1880s several gold mines were operated at Ukalunda, My Wyatt, and Normandy and later at Mt Coolon. In 1865, reports of a large coal deposit at Moongunya resulted in extensive testing and mining eventuated in 1919. The area was renamed Collinsville in 1921. The main township of Collinsville was established in late 1922 when 20 homes were erected. The State School and Police quarters were already operational, as were a general store and butcher shop. A hospital opened in 1926 and the town received reticulated water in 1930, with electricity connected in 1947. In 1967 a powerhouse was opened. It closed in 1988, was later privatised and reopened in 1997 and closed again in 2013. While in town, stroll around and look for the historical mining murals and heritage signs that will provide an insight into the lives of the region’s early settlers. A visit to the Miners Memorial and Coalface Experience Museum is a must. The town reservoir hill offers spectacular sights of Mt Devlin to the north, the Leichardt Ranges to the east, and Sonoma and Collinsville mines to the south and west. The reservoir hill at Scottville offers a spectacular night-time view of the Collinsville Coal Mine, Collinsville Power Station and Sonoma Coal Mine. Visit the Collinsville Bakery for their famous 56

fresh bread, stroll downtown and delight in locally made Arts and Crafts or simply enjoy a delicious cup of coffee. There is a pleasant 3.7 km walkway from Collinsville to Scottville that provides easy walking or biking for those who want a bit of exercise. Collinsville’s latest tourist attraction is the Pit Pony Experience which celebrates the lives of Australia’s last working mine Pit Ponies. Retired in 1990, Wharrier and Mr Ed marked the end of a long history of miners and pit ponies working side by side as mates. Centred around a a life size Collinsville Pit Pony sculptured in bronze, the Pit Pony Experience acknowledges the contribution from the community on a donaters wall located behind the horse. Around town are various”selfie” walls where visitors and locals alike can picture themselves along

side the loved pit ponies. A tourist route via a smartphone app has also been established through the small town to show off local attractions and to assist local business. The Pit Pony Experience is a true reflection of the strong values of comradeship and community found in Collinsville.

Originally established in about 1860, the building was donated to the National Trust of Queensland in 1974 by Ted Cunningham, of Strathmore Station. It was abandoned for sometime but in 2003 was rebuilt and now comprises of two buildings connected by a covered walkway. The building is an example of careful bush carpentry and skilled joinery.

The Collinsville and Scottville District Historical Society’s historical display is situated on the second floor alongside the Community Hub and local Centrelink agency

MINERS MEMORIAL DAY

COAL FACE MUSEUM Collinsville’s Mining Heritage Centre, the Coalface Experience, is dedicated to the history of Queensland’s coal mining industry and showcases the rich mining heritage of the region.

BOWEN RIVER HOTEL – STRATHMORE PUB

Miners Memorial Day is held every year on the 13th October, in memory of the 26 men that have lost their lives in the Collinsville mines. The memorial is held at the Workers Club, Home of the Coal Face Experience. October 13 is the day of Collinsville’s worst disaster which occurred in 1954, when 7 men tragically lost their lives in an underground explosion.

The hotel has a licensed bar, an informal beer garden that is family friendly and serves lunch and dinner. Accommodation is also available. There’s also a collection of photographs, paper clippings and memorabilia from early years. The immediate surrounds are abundant with wildlife and fish in the Bowen River are plentiful. Camping is offered for a small donation near the hotel. Every May Day long weekend, a fishing competition is hosted at nearby Terrible Creek. The Bowen River Rodeo and Campdraft is held on a weekend in June.

Stories of struggle, strife and mateship are played out at a range of interactive displays, audio-visual exhibits, two theatrettes and historical records presenting visitors with a great interpretation of the past, present and future of Queensland’s coal mining industry. The museum also shows visitors what life was like for the coal miners, both above and below ground in the 1950s. The museum’s opening coincided with the 50th anniversary of the town’s biggest underground mining disaster, in which seven men were killed in an underground gas explosion on October 13, 1954. It honours those men, and 19 others who have also lost their lives on the Collinsville coalfield. Collinsville was recognised as a potential coalfield as early as 1866, when the area became known as the Bowen River Coalfield. Railway construction from Bowen started in 1916 and full scale coal production started in 1922 following the railway’s completion that provided access to coastal markets.

BOGIE RIVER BUSH HOUSE Nestled in 25 acres of virgin bush land, a short drive from Bowen is a tranquil, relaxing local secret, known as the Bogie River Bush House. Surround yourself with abundant wildlife and birdsong, have lunch at the poolside cafe, take morning tea on the veranda, take a dip in the swimming pool or go on a walk. Upcoming events - movie nights, boot camps, mother’s day special. Day trippers are welcome. Be sure to call ahead on 4785 3407. Don’t miss the morning sunrise, close encounters with our furry local residents whilst being treated to real home style cooking and hospitality, a delight for children and adults alike, it’s great to be in the bush.

BOWEN RIVER RODEO AND CAMPDRAFT The Bowen River Rodeo and Campdraft is held annually on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June at the rodeo grounds behind the Bowen River Hotel. Campsites are available over the weekend & there is also plenty of live entertainment.

CREEK PICNICS Have a picnic on the banks of any of our local creeks. The creeks usually have a good flow in them during the April-Nov wet season.

3 MILE CREEK 3 Mile Creek is part of the Pelican Creek system and is located 15 minutes west of town as you travel through Scottville and out along the Myuna Road. It’s a great little swimming hole and picnic area.

Mount Coolon is famous for its Gold mining history, its pioneering grazing families and their experiences under harsh conditions. Mount Coolon is on the intersection of the Bowen Developmental Road and the

A jackeroo called Luke Reynolds from Yacamunda Station discovered gold there in 1913. Thomas Coolon was the first to peg a claim in 1914. Today the town boasts an array of old buildings and ruins to capture the imagination.

40 FOOT

Terry’s Creek is a 15-minute drive along the Peter Delemothe Road towards Bowen. It is another popular picnic and swimming place in the wet season.

MURALS Several Murals, depicting historic figures and scenes of historical mining activities, are painted on local business walls and contribute to the street beautification scheme. The latest Murals illustrate the importance of the Pit Pony to this unique mining community and the Coal industry in general and are part of a larger mural project linking Collinsville and Bowen.

Pelican Creek is a nice little creek that runs from the north east of town round to the western area. It’s easily accessible from several locations.

TERRY’S CREEK

The town reservoir hill offers spectacular sights of Mt Devlin to the North the Leichardt Ranges to the east and Sonoma and Collinsville mines to the south and west. The reservoirs are at the top of the hill at the end of Miller Street.

Suttor Developmental Road. Approximately 124 km from Collinsville. Only 75km of the road is bitumen sealed.

PELICAN CREEK

40 Foot is nestled up in the heart of Mt Devlin and in the wet season puts on a lovely waterfall display. A 15 to 20-minute hike up Mt Devlin will see you at the waterfall.

TOWN RESERVOIR LOOKOUT

BOWEN RIVER WEIR Bowen River Weir is about a 20-minute drive from Collinsville. Take the Mt Coolon Road out of town and when you get to Sonoma Mine, the turn-off to the weir is on the left hand side, opposite the mine’s entrance. The road can be rough at times so drive to the road conditions. The weir is a popular fishing and camping spot and the local fish stocking association restock the weir with barramundi fingerlings each year. The Collinsville water supply is pumped from here and is controlled by Sunwater. Be aware, saltwater crocodiles do inhabit these waters.

HERITAGE SIGN TRAIL The local historical society has sign marked a few of the Historical sites and buildings around the Collinsville, Scottville and Mt Coolon Districts. Each sign has a picture and a description of the significance of the site.

Please come and meet us at Jochhiems Bakery Cafe, where the tradition has been carried on since 1963. During your visit you’ll smell the aroma of freshly cooked pies, gourmet sandwiches, gluten free carrot cake or Bowen’s best coffee. You can taste our homemade products and relax in our 65 seat, air-conditioned bakery cage. We’re open Monday - Friday 5.30am till 3.30pm and Saturday 6.00am till 1.30pm.
