RCMP dive team searches for missing islander Doug Mitchell last seen on Saturday night MARCUS HONDRO CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Bowen Island resident who lives on boat at the pier has been missing since last Saturday night. There is fear that 59-year-old Doug Mitchell may have drowned but his friends remain hopeful that he’s alive. The RCMP are concerned Mitchell fell into the water while alone and could not get out. His cell phone lost contact with the cell tower at 1:14 a.m. Saturday night. In the days following his disappearance, a friend, who is a diver, searched under and around Mitchell’s boat, the Pelagic, but found nothing. The RCMP sent a dive team to Bowen, Wednesday afternoon, to search the waters and they, too, did not find a body. Mitchell was alone with his dog Cody on his boat on Saturday, the evening of the dock dance. He was in contact with friends earlier that night and the last known sighting was at about 9 p.m. He has not been seen since and left cigarettes, his wallet and Cody on the boat. His car remains parked nearby. “There are not many other options, Cst. Bryan Mulrooney told the Undercurrent about why the dive team was called in. “Basically, we eliminate all other possibilities and this may be what we’re left with. continued, PAGE 2

orget cutting through red tape; the Marine Life Sanctuaries Society of B.C. is simply ignoring it. The society’s president, Roy Mulder, says he’s tired of seeing government studies on what marine habitats should be protected collect dust. Of the embarrassingly few marine life sanctuaries in B.C., many of them have levels of protection but few fall under full “no take zones, says the North Vancouver resident. Mulder has been diving for 22 years. He says he’s seen how ineffective these
levels of protections are. He’s found fishing lures that are stuck in or have torn through corals and sponges and hauled out abandoned crab traps that turn into “killing machines. Mulder has also seen people catch rockfish and release them back into the water, not realizing that by bringing the fish to the sea’s surface, the creatures’ swim bladders expand, resulting in death. Recently divers and scientists have noticed signs of life returning to Howe Sound. But without help and protection, the marine environment has little to no chance of full recovery, Mulder says. “We can’t wait for government, he adds.
And so the society has taken matters into its own hands. Its members took a pledge to voluntarily refrain from extracting marine organisms out of marine conservation areas and other marine reserves. Now it’s challenging North Shore residents to follow suit. “Fish aren’t cute and cuddly, Mulder says. “If they had fur, they would be easier to protect. There are three parts to the society’s grassroots movement - education, stewardship and protection. This spring, the organization met with students on Bowen Island. continued, PAGE 8

Friends remain hopeful continued, PAGE 1 Cst. Mulrooney said the dive team used sonar equipment to search much of the Cove and is certain there is no body in the extensive area they searched. They feel if Mitchell did meet an unfortunate end in the waters, it is possible his body surfaced and was moved by currents elsewhere. At this time the RCMP have no plans to search further. The province announced in June that it will provide 665 classrooms around the province as part of its goal to provide full-day kindergarten to all B.C. kids by this September, when the educa-

The material used for the portable is not from trees cut down when the AT field was built. Some of that wood has been used to build a large raven sculpture that overlooks the field and the rest has been stored for a future BICS building project.

EDITORIAL
More change is afoot...
I
n mid-August, Justin Beddall and I will be switching editorial chairs. He will return as editor of the North Shore Outlook and I am going to become the new editor of WE, Black Press’s urban weekly newspaper in Vancouver. It will be an exciting challenge for me and Justin is looking forward to returning to his roots on the North Shore. One thing won’t change, however. I will still be the editor of the Undercurrent. It might seem like a big juxtaposition – being editor of one of the company’s most urban newspaper as well as one of its smallest papers – but it’s a natural fit for me personally. (And for my personality!) The water taxi is only a few blocks away from the WE office, making Bowen a quick boat ride away. The transition is made far more easily thanks to the formidable team we have here at the Undercurrent. Susanne Martin, Marcus Hondro and Lorraine Ashdown bring a multitude of skills to the newspaper and they are deeply attuned to Bowen Island life. Their dedication to the island and the Undercurrent knows no match and I am deeply
grateful for and indebted to their commitment to producing one of the best community newspapers in British Columbia. May I also acknowledge the always graceful presence of Lois Meyers-Carter at the Undercurrent on Thursday mornings. She brings her red pen, her knowledge of the island and her librarian’s exacting eye to the newspaper. As pages are laid out, she proofreads the stories and helps us limit the number of mistakes we make. It’s so reassuring to know she’s there each and every week. Thank you, Lois. And in this vein, plaudits and thanks to Ron Woodall. Every Wednesday afternoon, we look forward to the email that brings us the week’s cartoons. His sense of sly wit elicits everything from a bemused smile to an out-loud guffaw. We don’t know how he does it, but he manages to find ways to sum up island life, often by standing it on its head or sneaking a glance from around the corner. We are so very lucky to have him. With one month of blessed summer left, there are so many reminders of why Bowen Island is such a special place. Martha Perkins

Please help pay for community facility’s roof To the Editor:
C
ollins Hall has a wonderful new roof, thanks to some donations and a grant from our municipality. However there is still a shortfall of $7,000 towards the cost of replacing the roof. Who amongst us hasn’t been to Collins Hall for some meeting, event or island gathering? What other facility on Bowen Island offers us a place where we all feel truly at home? And Shelagh MacKinnon, the United Church Minister of our Little Red Church on Bowen, is known by nearly everyone on Bowen Island. She has touched many of us so deeply with her wonderful words and actions on so many occasions. However she is not the best fundraiser in the world and please don’t take that personally, Shelagh! So I am writing in the hopes that if every resident of Bowen Island just gave $10 ($100 would be better!), Collins Hall roof would be paid for fully and there would be some money left over for even more improvements for us all to enjoy. I personally have nothing to gain by writing this letter; however, all on our island have a lot to gain by contributing to our island’s community, whether it is a new roof for Collins Hall, or Catholic Mission, or Cates Hill who also support our island home in so many special ways. I understand from the treasurer (Sheila, 9074) of the BIUC, that cheques can be made payable to BIUC, RR # 1 (D118) Bowen Island, V0N 1G0. As a very wonderful woman once said, “Ask for what you need, and accept what you get” (Mother Teresa). I hope we can all make it happen. With grateful mindfulness Jeanie Seward-Magee

ast week I left a pendant at Tunstall Beach. Before I went swimming in the cold water, I left it on the rocks beside my towel. When I left, I had forgotten it there. Moguly has earned the right to spend summer days just lounging around on the deck. Not only is he close to 114 years old (in dog terms) but the Newfie/Retriever cross has been a wonderful guardian of his family’s children, even riding the school bus with them. Marcus Hondro photo

Moguly will be honoured at the USSC annual Dog Days of Summer event, this Sunday August 7. He has also been asked to ride in the Bowfest Parade. M
oguly is a very special dog. He is a Newfie/Retriever who we rescued from the SPCA as a puppy. He is very old, especially for a big dog. He is almost 100 in dog years, although we believe that he is actually around 114. He is a nanny dog and has looked after our six children on the water, on the snow, and on the road. He used to lie in the middle of Melmore Rd at the intersection, with his feet in the air, suntanning himself; vehicles had to drive
around him. He rode the school bus with his charges, and has taken solitary ferry rides from time to time. He spent many summers swimming around our bay making sure that our children didn’t run into any trouble out on the water; he swam out to save my friend, Jennifer, when she was having an asthma attack in the middle of our bay. (He recognized that she was in trouble, ran down the beach and then swam out to her where she was hanging onto a buoy and then presented himself for her to hang on to him to get back to shore). He loves to go to the tennis courts and visit with all the children (and adults) who have known him all their lives. He can balance treats on his nose until he is allowed to throw them in the air and catch them. His hips are kind of sore these days and he doesn’t “do stairs” very well; it takes him a long time to sit down and get back up. Although he seems to go on and on, we know that he can’t live forever. But he’s here now and very happy about it. We need to celebrate Moguly while he’s still here to celebrate with us.

spells his surname and I know his sister, the excellent artist and mother of Tally and Rhiannon, Emily van Lidth de Jeude. Lo and behold! In a huge coincidence Adrian and Ginger - at a barbeque in North Van playing ‘Settlers of Catan’ tonight - were just talking about me on the ferry. Me! It’s the biggest co-incidence ever in the Lane (another coincidence is they live next store to Ginger Rose, likely the only other Ginger on Bowen). On the Q. of C. they were talking with my neighbour Chris S., who’s forbidden me to put his name in the paper so must remain simply Chris S., and he told them about the time an eagle dropped a baby heron on our roof while me, the Boy and Wife-Girl watched in the front yard. Also on the ferry they say was the amusing Tierney Critchtickle, whose surname I never get right. Yesterday was Ginger and Adrian’s two-year anniversary. She is a graphic designer and works at Fawn’s Gym while Adrian teaches art at IPS. Here’s how they celebrated: a paddle over to Hutt Island and a hike about and then lunch on the not-much-more-than-a-rock Flower Island. It was a wonderful time, the water was choppy going over and they enjoyed that. Islanders! Oh, Adrian’s stag was on that massive mountain at Squamish; they had a helicopter drop them for two days. Fellow Islanders, the brothers Ruben and Joel Fleming went, as did Chris S., though we can’t spell this different Chris S.’s last name. Two Chris S.’s in one column, two Gingers and the fact they talked about me on the ferry right before we met. Cool. It’s quietly exhilarating, talking with good folk in the semi-dark of Snug Cove and after they drive off and I return to the middle of Miller Rd. and Bowen Trunk Rd., a sense of warmth lives in the air that was not there before. “If you let it, it will come,” I whisper. “And it did.” I stand and drink in the dark. There is peace in the Bowen Island air and I am grateful for that and embrace it. I write that down and then I write no more.

walk alone in the dark and I am not afraid. It is liberating, this darkness, and we have such an easy access to it here on the Happy Isle. Good Mistress Precious and her Boy are snuggled up in bed and I have come out into the dwindling hours of Tuesday, August 2, 2011. There is a column out here and I intend to find it. newsroom@bowenislandundercurrent.com I approach the library. A large, for Bowen, deer - a buck - is nearby and he also seems unafraid. He pays little attention as I walk within maybe 12 feet. We pass and I walk up the middle of the road toward my destination: the meeting of Bowen Trunk road and Miller road. The Lane will be there, or nearby. I sense it. The last ferry of this day has come and gone and I counted the number of cars: 25. Standing still, I try to fight an impulse of fear which says “what if no one comes?” A column that is just me will not do. Hey! Is that Sam Hayduk? In a car? Driving? No, not possible, he’s only eight or nine. Sam is an outstanding fellow and I consider flagging the vehicle down to talk with him but it’s late for a kid so I wave as he and Kat, or two people who look like them, drive off. I now stand in the middle of the juncture of these roads. What to do? Visit the signs on the grassy knoll? No. Need humans. The pub? That would be frightening somehow. They’d make fun of me, that lot. Besides, appears to be closed Tuesdays. Move off when cars come but few do. Nothing. Silence. Could enjoy it more if had I my column locked up. “If you let it, it will come,” I tell myself. I wander off for a look inside the beer and wine store. Lots of space, lots of bottles. But no Lane there. Wait. Could this be it? Humans approach a car, carrying plants, coming from the ferry. One male, one female. Begin to gabble. Adrian van Lidth de Jeude and Ginger Erskine. Adrian

Living in the home stays was the highlight of my trip. The families welcomed us as if we had known them our entire lives. The rustic lifestyle is their way of life but it was certainly a big change from what we are used to. Showering with a bucket and stumbling to the “bathroom” in the middle of the night, soon became part of our daily life. When I came back and walked through the door to my house, it was almost like paradise or heaven. First of all there was a door with a lock, bonus! Not a stick and a brick. Also, hardwood floors and carpet too. What really hit me hard was the amount of food we have, and even though we have lots stored in our cupboards and fridges, we keep buying more everyday or week. In Nicaragua the entire family had 40 Cordobas ($2) to spend on all the daily necessities of their families. My favourite part of my house is not the computer or gadgets, but my toilet and my shower. A toilet that flushes it’s just amazing! I love it! Also a shower with a showerhead and warm water. It feels like a dream stepping out of the shower and by the time you’re changed, you are still clean. It wasn’t like that in Nicaragua, walking back to our house from the shower; your feet would be instantly filthy again. Overall, as many of us know, we are extremely fortunate for everything we have, and even though many of us know it, we still don’t do anything to help. I am so grateful that I had this amazing opportunity to be able to travel to a third world country and see the poverty first hand.
Top: One of the things that made Bailey Jones’ experience in Nicaragua so worthwhile was her homestay with local families. Here, she and her homestay sister Angelita sit where they usually had their meals in the dark in front of Angelita’s house. Right: This is the view of Conception volcano from a coffee farm and hostel called Finca Magdalena.

COMING ON th COMING6ON AUGUST ... th AUGUST 6 ... TWO HOME-GROWN ORGANIC EVENTS!
he time to feast on Bowen blackberries, tomatoes, carrots, crab and kale is coming soon! BowFEAST 2011 is August 15 to 21, with a community farmers’ market on Sat., Aug. 20, 9 am to noon, on the library lawn. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions. See you at the feast! What is BowFEAST, anyway? A celebration of local eating and the harvest - honouring our island farmers. The highlight: do-it-yourself feasts around the island. The challenge: serve as much local - or regional - food and drink as you can. Gather your friends and family and feast SLOW-food style at your own house, in your own way. The point is: have fun, be thankful for what we have and savour our amazing local food! When is it? You can feast all week, but the farmers’ market is Sat., Aug. 20, 9 a.m. to noon on the library grass. What else? Local retailers are getting into it: The Ruddy Potato (www.ruddypotato.com) green grocer will be featuring Bowen-grown produce. Bowen Island Beer and Wine Cellar (bibws.wordpress.com/about) is offering BC wines on special and hosting wine tastings. Cocoa West Chocolatier (www.cocoawest.com) is making its popular “Bowen berry truffles” in honour of the feast.

Marine habitats Tunstall Bay home houses need protection extensive collection of local art SUSANNE MARTIN continued, PAGE 1
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
The pupils gathered on a beach while divers brought up species for viewing. The society has also created videos of marine life in Howe Sound to take to West and North Vancouver schools. The stewardship part of the initiative involves residents becoming aware of locally protected marine areas and reporting and recording any violations in those zones. And the final component is the “no take” pledge. Simply put, the plan is to encourage the community to feel ownership of its marine habitat. “I think it is the only way we will be successful at saving it,” Mulder says. Twelve years ago, the society’s members used to help conduct an annual fish count. The surveys stopped when the counts got so small; it wasn’t worth the divers’ time, Mulder says. He’s excited for the day when the fish numbers are up again. “I am passionate about this because of what I have seen in a very short period of time,” Mulder says. “We can make a change.” For more information on the Marine Life Sanctuaries Society of B.C. and its programs, visit www.mlssbc.com or check it out on Facebook.
hen a group of 24 West Vancouver art enthusiasts arrived at Ian Henley’s home on Bowen Island recently, they were greeted by sweeping views of Tunstall Bay with Vancouver Island hovering in the background. The surroundings offered a sense of spaciousness but Henley’s house itself is not particularly large. All the more surprising was what they found inside: a substantial collection of art produced by painters, photographers, sculptors, potters and jewellers associated with Bowen Island. The art is interspersed freely with the Henleys’ day-to-day essentials and adorns every wall, nook, shelf and ledge. The participants of the art tour, organized by the Ferry Building Gallery of West Vancouver, took their time to browse. Ruth Payne is the gallery’s visual arts coordinator. “We do local tours where we take small groups to artists’ houses in West Vancouver and around the North Shore,” she says. “And we visit Bowen Island once a year because it’s so unique and we find these little hide-away places like this where you find wonderful art collections.” Gallery assistant Mary Harrington remembers connecting with Henley the previous year. She said, “We heard about Ian from Jeanette Wrenshall, the potter who lives around the corner. She asked me if I had ever been to Ian’s house. I said no and she told me that he’s got 150 pieces of art that he’s collected over the years.” When Harrington contacted the retired provincial court judge,

he said that he was interested in sharing his art but he was concerned that his pieces weren’t displayed properly; a lot of them were in storage. Henley took the opportunity to get organized. He found spaces to hang the art and he handwrote labels for his collection. When he phoned Harrington a week later, he said yes to hosting the group. Henley is a hobby portrait painter. On his walls, there are the more familiar names of Ron Tribe, Sam Black, Ian Fry, Stuart Slind and Anne Lagasse. But equally prominently displayed are pieces by Andrew Cameron, Kaitlin Hunter and, Henley’s latest acquisition, a portrait by Robyn Westcott. Henley is especially fond of the art produced by young artists and introduced 15-year-old Robyn to his guests. He said, “I saw a presentation by this young woman and she has inspired me.”
Susanne Martin photo.
Wendy Bain regularly signs up for the art tours. She said, “I love the pieces by Sam Black; he was my teacher at UBC. But what makes [Henley] so fascinating is that he has collected so much. And he has given so much encouragement to young artists; for instance, the talented young girl whom we just met. It’s wonderful to have the resources to buy art from emerging artists because you’re really giving them a step up.” That is certainly the case with Robyn Westcott. She came away inspired not only by the art but also by the significance it holds for Henley who has a story to tell about every piece, every artist. Westcott is proud to be part of Henley’s collection that reflects the wealth and diversity of Bowen Island’s artistic community.

ith the hiatus from school and, for some, an abundance of free time, the travelling bug has bit many islanders. Off they go, to Europe or Hawaii seeking escape from cloudy and rainy BC. But I find that once I’m away, after the initial excitement has worn off, the sun is always a little too hot and the landscape, though interesting, is somehow lacking. It’s not long before I begin to ache for the familiarity of the gorgeous BC rainforests and the rocky Bowen beaches. For those who share my love of our natural vistas, the Gallery @ Artisan Square has a treat for you.
