Bowfest is a tribute to community spirit BOWFEST BOARD SPECIAL TO THE UNDERCURRENT
W
Bowen Jugglers kept everyone in the hoop.
ith near perfect weather, early counts are indicating the highest attendance ever at Bowfest 2010. Although not final, gate estimates are that over 2,000 adults and children attended. The number of people contributing to make this day happen is stunning and a tribute to our community. There are probably as many people volunteering as those attending. The entire board has re-enlisted for Bowfest 2011 and can’t wait for the fun to begin again. Our deepest appreciation to our incredible community for making Bowfest such a great day. Animal update: We are sorry for not having the baby goats this year. They did arrive but they were very nervous and tried to escape so they went back to their little home at Clementia Braraton’s Primrose Farm.. And they were VERY happy! Those of you whowere concerned about the adventurous raptors that “flew the coop”, the Harris Hawk came back to the field enticed by a big hunk of steak (oh and maybe a bit of sushi) and the turkey vulture enjoyed some time on beautiful Cates Hill, then came down for a snack and then all the Pacific Northwest Raptors team headed home to Duncan! Whew... what a day!

Fast times on Bowen’s hills MARTHA PERKINS EDITOR
I
t took a lot of effort, but Gregory Demars gave himself one of the best birthday presents ever - a fast firstplace finish in the 2010 Run for the Ferry. Demars, who turned 33 on Saturday, was the fastest person to cross the finish line in the 10K event with a time of 34:20.6. He’d heard about the race when he and his wife came to Bowen for a hike a few days earlier. They’d just arrived from France for a year’s sojourn in Vancouver and fell in love with “this wonderful island.” He saw the billboard for the run and decided to sign up. Demars is an accountant by trade and is a dedicated trail runner. He was a bit taken aback by Bowen’s hills but not bowed. “For me, it was a good time,” he says of his results. Race organizer Richard Best is also
thrilled with the run, which he is hoping to turn into a major tourist draw for the island. Registration was up 20 per cent, with almost 300 participants. (Last year there were 244.) “The run is a success no matter how many runners take part because it draws the community together for something that is healthy and fun,” he says. And it’s not just the participants who benefit. The event is a major fundraiser for Bowen Island Community Housing, which wants to make sure people of all incomes can afford to live on Bowen Island. Best says he got lots of compliments from runners about the musical entertainment along the way. As well as Teun Schut and his band - Jesse Godin, Dave Hall and John Stiver - keeping the crowd pumped at the main gathering area in front of the library, the band MTC was “just rocking along” partway through the 10K race and a group of teenagers performed near the fish hatchery.

Old guys have what it takes to fend off young guns in all-star fastball match MARTHA PERKINS EDITOR

ou can make all the Viagra jokes you want, but don’t ever call the winners of the 2010 Bowfest all-star fastball game old. When it comes to being baseball champions, it’s not youth that matters, it’s how well you play the game. Saturday afternoon saw the top 13 fastball league players who are younger than 30 take on the top 13 players older than 30. The “young” team burst out of the gates with a 6-0 lead but that only fired up the “old team” who took off with 21 runs over the six innings. Despite some lastinning heroics, the young guns simply couldn’t catch up fast enough. The final score was 21-16 for the old(er) guys.
