Explore Whitby Town and Harbour Whitby town is a gem of a place; its own gem being Whitby Jet, Queen Victoria’s mourning jewellery. Shops and workshops showcase this local treasure. Split into an east and west side by the River Esk, the town has two distinct identities. The west side hosts grander houses, architecture and more modern entertainments. The east side, until a few years ago was the poor relation. It is now a bustling area of cobbled streets, narrow yards (do explore) and individual shops, galleries and cafés.
The harbour is obviously the focal point of the town, crossed by the 100 plus year old swing-bridge. It will fascinate both young and old alike. The piers point due north, its lighthouses have guided shipping for nearly 200 years and its waters have seen the launching of ships that explored the world.

Whitby Museum
Whitby Museum Whitby Museum is in beautiful Pannett Park, right in the heart of Whitby. It was founded in 1823 and offers a fascinating glimpse of Whitby’s Heritage. The Museum has a diverse and intriguing range of displays that tell the story of Whitby and the surrounding area. From the huge fossil Ichthyosaurus to a tiny clockwork Mickey Mouse and many other objects which reflect Whitby’s vibrant and scientific maritime history, including the exploits of Captain James Cook. The Museum has retained its original Edwardian atmosphere and its eclectic and fascinating collection of 90,000 artefacts and curios displayed within the museum are a delight for all ages. Local historical information can also be researched in the museum library and archives, where librarians are available to help. A programme of changing exhibitions, talks and events take place throughout the year. Wheelchair friendly, level access to the museum is available at the rear of the building from the Disabled Car Parking area.

Pannett Park The award winning Pannett Park is on the edge of Whitby town centre. Pannett Art Gallery Based in the beautiful Pannett Park, Whitby Museum and Pannett Art Gallery offer a fascinating glimpse of Whitby’s heritage. The Pannett Art Gallery has two unique collections: The exquisitely detailed paintings of George Weatherill and his family 1810–1923 illustrate how the town developed during the 19th Century. The colourful and lively paintings of the Staithes Group of Artists, the only comprehensive public display by this early 20th Century artist colony. The Gallery also houses two beautiful Burne-Jones Tapestries and hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Open Tuesday - Sunday. Level entry is available at the rear of the building. Eden Camp Anyone looking to explore outside the town should consider taking a ride through the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park. A 30 mile car ride along the A169 will take you to one of the most unique tourist attractions in the UK: Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum. Located on the northern edge of the historic town of Malton, and now in its 30th year of opening as a museum, Eden Camp was constructed in 1942 to house Italian and German Prisoners of War. The original POW accommodation huts now house what is the largest public display of memorabilia and information relating to 20th Century British military and 1930’s and 40’s civilian and social history in the world. An enjoyable and educational day out for all the family, Eden Camp is also dog friendly and provides free on-site parking.

Staithes
Staithes The small fishing village of Staithes (locals pronounce it as Steers!) tucks itself under the protective mass of Cowbar Cliff, leaving the beck a safe haven for a small fleet of fishing cobles (pronounced ‘cobbles’). Bring a camera or sketch book! Despite the steep walk down the village is visually rewarding. It was home to the nationally renowned Staithes Group of artists at the turn of the 1900s. Examples of their work are in Pannett Art Gallery, Whitby (see page 15 for details).
Runswick Bay Picture postcard pretty! Tiny walkways wind around cottages huddled under the cliff, whilst the bay itself sweeps round in a sandy curve, offering ideal play opportunities for the very young and a nice tidal walk for those not so young. There is a small car park near the village.

Sandsend Tiny, but plenty to fill a day. The beach is a delight. Two becks flow into the sea at either end of the village, giving children hours of fun damming, jumping and attempting to divert the flow of water. The valleys leading back from the beach offer a gentle stroll into a quieter world.

Robin Hood’s Bay
Robin Hood’s Bay Given its diminutive scale it offers almost all you could wish for as a place to visit or stay. The narrow ‘streets’ of Robin Hood’s Bay are a joy to explore. Delightful cottages with odd names rub shoulders with cafés and interesting shops. There are even some pubs to sample (a real must if you have just completed the Coast to Coast walk!) Visit the village museum to see what life was like in days gone by. Opening out from Wayfoot you are presented with a fine beach, sand and rock pools abound. Tide dependent, the beach offers a fine walk towards the old Roman Signal Station at Ravenscar, a walk that can also take you along the cliff path or long (Cinder Track) loop by bike or foot, following the disused Whitby-Scarborough Railway, where the views are stunning.
Ravenscar Ravenscar – a venture that failed! A village laid out but never built. There is a fine hotel and views to admire. The Visitor Centre is well worth a visit for details of the local Roman signal station and alum works which saw Henry VIII take on the might of Rome.

Tour de Yorkshire 2017 Stage 1: Bridlington to Scarborough (173km) Friday 28 April 2017 sees the return of the Tour de Yorkshire to Whitby and the area. This very special, annual event is certainly a highly important and firm calendar favourite, and is well looked forward to by locals and visitors alike. The coastal and moorland areas hold everything that’s required for a very exciting but highly challenging race, from straight roads to steep, rugged climbs. Starting outside Bridlington Spa, the cyclists then head over to Pocklington for their first intermediate sprint. Three ‘King of the Mountain’ climbs are included in Stage 1. The first classified climb is Côte de Garrowby Hill, followed by the strenuous and most challenging Côte de Goathland. It will really get the racers fired up to full speed before they reach the coastline at Whitby, where they can expect amazing Abbey views whilst contesting the second sprint of the day. On leaving Whitby the cyclists head over for the third and final climb of the day (known to be the showpiece and ‘killer’ climb) at Côte de Robin Hood’s Bay, and then it’s full flow across to Scarborough’s North Bay for the Grand Finale. The Moors and Valleys The North York Moors, heather clad uplands and fertile valleys offer many opportunities to explore and relax. The valleys to the west of the moors give a glimpse of farms and settlements tucked under moortops. The River Esk is the main river flowing from the upper moorlands above Westerdale, a dale that the knight Templars cultivated in the 12th Century. Castleton is the original capital of the dales and the first major settlement on the river. Famous in the 1800s for its local cheese market, even supplying Queen Victoria. Danby keeps well above the Esk and as its name implies was a Viking settlement. A charming chain of a village with the North York Moors Visitor Centre and Gallery nearby; well worth a visit. Look up and you will see Danby Castle across the valley, home to Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s wife who survived him!

Egton and Egton Bridge are two separate villages in reality. The historic claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of the martyred Father Postgate who was hunted down and betrayed for his Catholic preaching throughout the area. Beck Hole is a pretty spot with a quaint pub and the hub of some pleasant walks. Climb up the road to Goathland and you will see the village that was ‘home’ to the TV series “Heartbeat”. The village, nearly a mile in length, once had a golf course running through it! Grosmont once had a population of 9,000, 3 blast furnaces and a brickworks! Some traces remain but as a visitor you will be drawn to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Station and workshops. Sleights - The Bridge, a previous structure washed away in the 1930 floods, is a fine spot to view the salmon leap. Catch a steam train heading in to Whitby or up the Esk Valley. Ruswarp (pronounced ‘Rusup’) - For boating and other delights where the tidal reaches of the Esk end at the weir. The village is a pleasant stroll from Whitby.

The ‘Ruswarp Round’ Circular Walk WHITBY – RUSWARP – WHITBY Riverside, railway and monks’ trod footpaths Distance: 2 miles Type: Moderate Time: approx. 1 hour
Start and Finish - Marina car park. From the Coates Marine end of the car park follow the river-side path through to Ruswarp. Admire the old Railway Viaduct halfway along! At the end of the path, turn right onto the High Street and take a right turn after Jackson’s Butchers and Ruswarp Hall on to the Monks’ Trod. Follow the Trod to a signposted junction at a metal kissing gate. There are now two alternatives: 1) Go straight on which is the last section of the Esk Valley Walk. Follow the ‘leaping salmon’ signs back to Whitby, via school playing fields and cross the A171 road, down the footpath, and cross the railway line to the car park. 2) At the kissing gate, follow the Trod to the left up the hill. This path leads to the main road at the Prospect Hill traffic lights. At the lights, follow the signs down the hill to the left, to the Town Centre.

Cycling in the North York Moors. Why not try… The 21-mile Cinder Track, along the line of the former Whitby to Scarborough railway (there’s bike hire at Trailways at Hawsker, along the route) Dalby Forest Loop – a 14-mile ‘Explorer’ route, showing you parts of the National Park you can’t reach by car (bike hire from Dalby Bike Barn, Dalby Forest) Mountain bikers can ride the forest trails in Dalby Forest or tackle a section of the 150-mile ‘Moor to Sea’ cycle network. North Yorkshire Moors Railway The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railway experiences with thrills and family fun at its heart. Climb on board a steam or heritage diesel train to experience 24 miles of Yorkshire’s amazing scenery at this must-see visitor attraction. Visit Pickering and explore the historic market town, 13th century castle and Beck Isle Museum. Or explore Levisham station and surrounding country walks. A must-see is the celebrity station of Goathland, which became Hogsmeade station in the first Harry Potter film. Grosmont is home to the operating and engineering world of the railway and a visit to Whitby, with its narrow streets and bustling harbour, is overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey. The North York Moors Historical Railway Trust is a not-for-profit charitable organisation run as part of the local community. Every visitor that travels on the railway helps to preserve one of the UKs earliest and most historic lines. The Esk Valley Line The superbly scenic Esk Valley Railway takes you from urban Middlesbrough through picturesque villages, such as Lealholm, to the famous and historic fishing port of Whitby. Throughout the 35 mile journey, just relax and enjoy the constantly changing rural landscape. It is a unique and affordable way of discovering the North York Moors National Park, without having to resort to the car. The line connects at Grosmont with the heritage steam service to Pickering. Hikers and walkers can also explore the surrounding countryside before catching the train home. One of the best walks is the Esk Valley Walk between Castleton and Whitby, a 37 mile route which follows the River Esk from its source at Esklets, Castleton, until it ends at Whitby where it flows into the sea.

A Note of Special Interest Whitby Town Council (WTC) with support of the Whitby & District Tourism Association (WDTA) are currently pursuing UNESCO World Heritage Site status for Whitby Abbey Headland. World Heritage Status would be wonderful, and most well deserved because of its… Religious significance – St Hilda’s Synod of Whitby in the 7th Century set the date of Easter throughout the world and her calculation is still used today. Geological significance – local fossils were the Type Specimens used by geologists worldwide (especially Ammonite hildrocerous named after St Hilda). Whitby Museum is world famous for them. Nautical significance – Captain James Cook learned his seamanship in Whitby, chose Whitby-built ships for his 3 great voyages to put the world ‘on the map’, and Captain Cook Museum is where he lived. Architectural significance – St Hilda’s medieval abbey is largely unexplored; the magnificent ruins of the later abbey remain, overlooking the historic port where the medieval street pattern is still in use.
