Explore Whitby Town and Harbour Not so long ago Whitby was divided both socially and physically by the River Esk, with the east side as the poor relation – not so anymore! Whilst quite different in style both east and west sides offer our visitors much to explore and enjoy. Shops and eateries offer a wide range of choice. The river and harbour are a major factor in Whitby’s charm. There is always something to watch above or below the swing bridge (built by the same people that built the Blackpool Tower!).

The piers offer a nice stroll with views right down to Sandsend 3 miles away. Elegant lighthouses on both piers offer an interesting selfie backdrop. Trips out to sea – viewing, fishing or even whale watching are there to take. Staying on dry land? Then there is plenty to feast the eye whilst enjoying an ice cream by the railings.

Heritage Coastal Villages

Robin Hood’s Bay and Ravenscar Although several miles apart, they always seem linked by the sweep of Robin Hood’s Bay. And yes, theories abound as to the connection with our famed outlaw! Beach, cliff or railway link these two villages, although Ravenscar – originally the site of a Roman Signal Station is often called “the village that never was”. Robin Hood’s Bay is a charming bustling gem of a place. Explore its tiny alleys, whilst imagining the smugglers and excise men playing ‘cat and mouse’ following a landing of brandy or other contraband! Kids need to let off steam? No problem – at low tide, a long wide beach with rock pools will keep them busy.

21 | visitwhitby.com

View of Ravenscar from Robin Hood’s Bay

The beach at Sandsend

Sandsend Both rural and coastal in its attractions. Two becks create lovely wooded valleys and as they spill onto the beach create a fabulous playground for the young. You won’t starve here with plenty of cafÊs etc to sample! The cliffs above the village indicate its earlier mining life. Can you spot the relics of the railway that Beeching axed?

visitwhitby.com | 22

Heritage Coastal Villages

Runswick Bay

Runswick Bay Much painted by artists and now often photographed, the thatched cottage under the cliff is a must! Colourful and pretty with access to a fine beach at low tide, it is worth getting there early to bag a space in the small car park at the edge of the village.

Staithes This village still has a small fleet of fishing cobles moored in Staithes Beck. Viewed from the bridge the mooring lines and tie posts create some wonderful images. A late 19th Century group of artists gathered here to paint using both Staithes and Runswick Bay as the inspiration for some stunning works of art. (Visit Pannett Gallery in Whitby - see p15). You can see why! However they wouldn’t have painted the Cod and Lobster Pub you see now, it has been washed away and rebuilt since they were here.

The Moors and Valleys The North York Moors encircle Whitby and did in early times virtually cut off Whitby from the rest of England. Probably the most famous village in the moors is Goathland (aka ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV ‘Heartbeat’ series), a long winding village that once had a golf course running through it. An ideal centre in its own right, but also an ideal spot to reach the moors and even see a piece of Roman road above the village. Two tiny delightful satellite hamlets of Beck Hole and Darnholm are close by. The former with a delightful pub and the hub of many walks on the original horse-drawn railway.

The Esk Valley Villages The River Esk, as it winds its way down from the high moors, supports several villages along its length. Several very sensibly staying out of reach of the river in flood! Westerdale is the first village on the fledging river, once a stronghold of the Knights Templar in the 12th Century but now a simple quiet village with a strong cricket team! Castleton did once have a castle and was referred to as the Capital of the Dale. Poor quality coal was dug up on the moor above the village nicknamed ‘Castleton Cracker’ indicating its burning ability! Danby also kept its feet away from the river. One of the many watermills that once lined the Esk is still in existence at the foot of the village. Danby castle is famed for being the home of Katherine Parr, the only wife to survive Henry VIII. The fascinating National Park Danby Moors Centre is just outside the village – its gallery and centre are well worth a visit (see p35 for details). Egton and Egton Bridge are separated by a steep hill. The annual Gooseberry Fair – when locals battle for the heaviest goosegog takes place in August. The other claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Father Postgate, a catholic priest who defied the crown, preaching locally and hiding until being detained and hung in York.

Grosmont (pronounced ‘Gromont’) has a chequered history, originally a monastic settlement, then a massive industrial complex of blast furnaces, brickworks and railway. Now only the latter remains as the hub of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Lealholm - When the Middlesbrough to Whitby line was being constructed in the 1860s Lealholm was referred to as a Sodom and Gomorrah due to the large encampment near the village for the navvies. Today nothing could be further from the truth. The village is a delight, offering walks by the river, stepping stones crossing the Esk, picnic areas, ice creams, food and even a nursery of fine plants and shrubs. The chapel even carries the marks of the many floods that Lealholm has suffered. Sleights - The village stretches from the edge of the moors – Blue Bank a mile or so down to the river itself where in 1930 the river in full spate tore away the original bridge. Just downstream is Briggswath where the River Gardens offer plants, putting and cream teas. Ruswarp (pronounced ‘Rusup’) is where the tidal Esk meets the freshwater river. A weir separates the two, providing lovely boating opportunities in the upper waters. A pleasing walk from Whitby to Ruswarp (‘The Ruswarp Round’) follows the river and the railway. This walk takes you under the massive Whitby viaduct which once carried the Whitby to Scarborough Railway (see p29 for details).

visitwhitby.com | 28

The ‘Ruswarp Round’ Circular Walk WHITBY – RUSWARP – WHITBY Riverside, railway and monks’ trod footpaths Distance: 2 miles Type: Moderate Time: approx. 1 hour

Start here

Start and Finish - Marina car park. From the Coates Marine end of the car park follow the river-side path upstream through to Ruswarp. Admire the old Railway Viaduct halfway along! At the end of the path, turn right onto the High Street and take a right turn after Jackson’s Butchers and on to the Monks’ Trod. Follow the Trod to a signposted junction at a metal kissing gate. There are now two alternatives: 1) Go straight on which is the last section of the Esk Valley Walk. Follow the ‘leaping salmon’ signs back to Whitby, via school playing fields, cross the A171 road down the indicated footpath and cross the railway line to the car park. 2) At the kissing gate, follow the Trod to the left up the hill. This path leads to the main road at the Prospect Hill traffic lights. At the lights, follow the signs down the hill to the left, to the Town Centre.
