Autumn Equinox’
Oils on Canvas.
A Sussex based artist specialising in marine oil paintings of seascapes and rock-pools.
By capturing the beauty of local coastlines they raise awareness around marine conservation, the paintings capture the urgency for preservation. By believing art has the ability to communicate to our instincts and raise perspectives that we sometimes find hard to vocalise.
Drawing much inspiration from the Sussex coast, observing the turbulent and transient nature of weathering and erosion in the geology of the coast. Born in Brighton he worked as an Illustrator, on numerous book covers for London publishers for over 30 years. From James Bond novels to conceptually lead science fiction covers for Ray Bradbury and Puffin Classics amongst others.
For the last ten years his passion for studying and painting in oils has produced a series of work inspired by scenes at low tide. Each painting captures a moment in nature with precision and detail, celebrating the beauty of it’s impermanence.
Like many children he was mesmerized by rock pools and now revisits his childhood fascination with his work today.

James grew up in Cornwall, a beautiful and wild part of the UK which inspired his love for nature. It became obvious from a young age that he enjoyed creativity and craft and it was after working as an apprentice to a blacksmith in Cornwall that his sculpture was born.
Blacksmithing gave James the traditional skills and techniques of working metal and provided the platform on which James has developed and refined his unique self taught style of working with scrap metal, which largely relies on welding, grinding and the hammer!
Since 2009 James’ style and portfolio has evolved through working from life and countless hours spent in the workshop. James’ ambition for each sculpture is to locate the personality of each subject and express an emotion and story of a moment in the wild.
