So many things have happened to promote the NAAFC, the clubs and magazine in May. The B&F was on the radio; well that was end of April, but still, I had a lovely few hours with Ewan Galloway in his studio. I also manned a table at the Dundee Strathspey and Reel Society’s Fiddler’s Rally in Dundee and Chairman Nicol McLaren was on Take the Pia Walker, Editor Floor. All this is well worthwhile, as it may just bring in more visitors to your club. The more people hear about us, the better the chances are that some will turn up to experience a club night. At the end of the month I went to Denmark with 183 Scottish Country Dancers, and I of course brought some magazines with me. Promotion is important. I have just come home from the dentist and as I was there early (wanted to get it over and done with!), I had a look at their magazine table. And it struck me, why shouldn’t a back copy of the B&F sit there beside all the others? So next season, when you have a copy left over, don’t feel that you have lost the £2.70 because you haven’t sold it, see it as £2.70 that you reinvest in promoting your club, the NAAFC and the B&F. Staple a note to it with your club dates for the year and present the magazine to a waiting room near you. If you don’t have any left over, should you not try and order 1 or 2 more and see if they sell? (Hint, hint, nudge, nudge!) In this issue we cover the last Guest of Honour, Iain Wilson, and reveal the top nominees for the Baffi’s. We have more Festival results with photos, Jack Delaney is Centre Stage and Clappy Doo tells about the band in the Take the Floor session. During the summer, while you work on your tan, Marie and I will work on the website, which, by the way, now has an events page. We are still open for advertising; contact me for a media pack. I hope you get a lot of sun over the summer, but beware of the midges!

Castelfidardo visit Advance notice

Castelfidardo visit May 2016

George Burns, Colin Garvin, Steven Nelson, Lisa Mitchell, Stuart Cameron

Once again the third Sunday in April saw a gathering of players and enthusiasts in Glasgow’s Park Bar for the biannual Morino Day session. Organised by Nicky McMichan as an informal get-together for Morino box players (and anyone else wanting a tune), it was a great day of music and catching up with friends, including such well-travelled folk as Aidan Frost from Ireland and Drewie Hawick, Maggie Adamson and Brian Nicholson from Shetland. Thanks to all who attended and had a tune and to the Park Bar for looking after us so well. Players and attendees included: Alasdair MacLeod, Matthew Maclennan, Steven Nelson, Hamish MacDougall, Alasdair MacPhail, Susan MacFadyen, Nicky McMichan, Aidan Frost, John Burns, Mark Cummine, Craig McFadyen, Andy Kinnear, Finlay Robertson, Ally K MacPherson, Drew Smilie, Stuart Cameron, Seamus O Sullivan, Colin Garvin, Lisa Mitchell, Ross Wilson, George Burns, Campbell Brown, Lindsay Weir, Maggie Adamson, Brian Nicholson, Jim Clark, John Omand, Ian Smith, Niall Kirkpatrick, Drewie Hawick, Andy Phillip. Apologies if I missed anyone, see you all for the next one in November. Neil Macgregor

Following our visit to Castelfidardo ‘The Home of the Accordion’ last year a number of people have expressed interest in a trip in 2016. The visit to Italy will be for 5 days (4 nights) and will include a visit to the Accordion Museum; the opportunity to try the world’s largest working piano accordion and a chromatic model. Visits to factories seeing accordions being built, discovering how bellows are made and how reeds are produced. Try the latest accordions; enjoy getting together in the evening playing on accordions loaned to the group. Experience the lovely region of Le Marche and some of the hilltop towns, visit Loreto and the underground tunnels at Osimo. Last Gala Night includes a guest accordionist and entertainment by members of the group. Flights are from Heathrow and accommodation is at a 4 star hotel with Gala Night dinner included. Luxury coach travel from Bologna to Castelfidardo and use of the coach throughout the stay is included. Visit to Bologna or San Marino on the return journey. Note: We plan to offer a Ryanair Stansted - Ancona option. Travellers will have to arrange their own transfer from Ancona to the hotel in Castelfidardo (bus or taxi). To go on our list to receive full details please call: Peter Le Geyt on 020 8977 6680 or email: plg@plgmarketing.com

ABERDEEN Scott Gordon, Chairman, welcomed a large turnout and first up on accordion was Frank Burnett accompanied by Stanley Flett on piano. Then Stanley took the lead on accordion and played a couple of sets accompanied by Esma Shepherd. Next Keith Duncan played with Scott joining him on drums. Thomas Laurie, an occasional visitor to the club took the floor with his accordion. Our guest artists came from Inverness. They were Susie Simpson and her Scottish Dance Band who comprised Susie on lead accordion, Jock Fraser on 2nd accordion, Sheena Kelman on keyboard and Gillian Stephenson on fiddle. They gave us a nice varied programme with interesting arrangements. The second half started with Charlie and Florence Lawie who were joined by Andy Kain on fiddle. Andy plays with several bands and indeed has his own band, but he was pleased to join Charlie and Florence. They go back a long way with Andy being taught at St Machar Academy by Charlie who organised a musical group at

Susie Simpson SDB, Aberdeen

lunch-times to encourage any would-be artists. This group also included Gordon Middler who now plays keyboard with Tom Orr. Andy then took the stage and played the bonnie slow air Music of Spey and a strathspey and reel, which went down very well. Then it was Sandy MacAllan’s turn. For a change Sandy chose to play a couple of classical pieces, one being The Swan by Saint-Saëns. Nice to hear a different kind of music. The last performer from the floor was Denis Shepherd on mouth organ who gave us a couple of pipe marches. After this it was time for Susie Simpson and her band for their second spot. Again a nice mixture of styles and

arrangements, which went down well with the audience. Esma Shepherd ALNWICK FEBRUARY It was as always another great night of good company, music and enjoyment. The local players were on accordion: Anita James and Ann Brown. Anita also played the mouth organ. Di Jevons on fiddle and Ian Riddell played drums. The other box players were John Murray, Brian Jacques, Leonard Brown, Colin Bradford and yours truly. Ernie Gordon and Jimmy Little played their moothies. The guest artists were Alan Small on accordion, Gemma

Donald on fiddle with Kyle Innes on drums and he also played a couple of sets on accordion. A great programme very well played and presented, which made the night very worthwhile. Many thanks and well done to everyone. MARCH Yet another enjoyable night. Our local players were Ann Brown, Mathew Lamont, Robbie Herdman, Robin Cowens, Leonard Brown and myself playing accordions. Jimmy Little on his moothie with Andy Kain and Ian Woods on their fiddles, Ian Riddell played drums. Our guests for the night were Ian Muir on accordion; Marie Fielding on fiddle with Neil McMillan on piano, Neil also played a superb set on accordion. APRIL April saw the club hold its AGM. No real changes or surprises, The Committee was re-elected and the format for the club is to continue as is. The Farriers provided the company with a grand buffet supper enjoyed by all. No guest artist, but a great night of music was provided by

the local players who were: Di Jevons, Gillian Birnie and Andy Kain on fiddles. Jimmy Little on mouth organ and Leonard Brown, Neil Riddell and myself playing accordions. A rousing stramash brought a very enjoyable night to close. Thanks one and all. Mungo Riddell ANNAN ST ANDREW The guest band for the monthly meeting was the Lyne Valley Scottish Dance Band, comprising David Bell on lead accordion, Donald Ridley on second accordion, Ian Wilson on keyboard and Robert Willens on drums. David purchased his first accordion when he started earning a wage, having learned how to play the instrument. Although only a teenager, he started his band and fifty plus years down the road it remains as popular as ever. His first booking was close to home playing for a dance in Hethersgill Village Hall and over the years they have played at venues across, Scotland, England and Wales. Importantly, David has supported and continues to support all the local Accordion and Fiddle Clubs.

The band commenced the evening playing for a number of popular dances. The local players, accompanied by Ian Wilson on keyboard and Billy Porter on drums were: Newbie Park from Carlisle playing a number of popular quickstep tunes on piano accordion, Richard Brown from Aspatria playing for a Palais Glide on piano accordion. Then Willie Little from Dumfries played the whistle and Jim Fraser from Dumfries played piano accordion followed by Norman Swainson from Wigton who played a number of popular tunes on piano accordion. Barbara Fisher from Springholm was accompanied by John Waugh both on piano accordion. Finally John Waugh from Carlisle played piano accordion. The guest band then returned to the stage and concluded the evening playing for further dancing. BANFF & DISTRICT Andy welcomed all and the following musician came on stage: Allan Ferguson on button-box, George Ogg on piano accordion, Alan Shepherd on keyboard, John Cook on washboard, Andy on piano accordion. They were joined by part of the guest band. We had Wullie James on fiddle, Ian Anderson on drums and Dave Morris on fiddle. The music was tremendous, what a welcoming start. George and Chris Stepien on piano accordion and John continued with sets including Ashokan Farewell. It was great to listen to. Next up was Dave
