It’s sunny! It is May, the month were many of you stop going to clubs, electing instead to mow lawns and go on holidays. We continue to publish through the summer, so don’t forget to get your copy from either a nice retailer near you (see list on page 8), or by summer subscription. I have had so many brilliant moments with the B&F in April, quite a few Pia Walker, Editor positive phone calls from various readers, a lovely time with one of our Guest of Honours interviewing him for this month’s article, and also a really nice letter from a gentleman in Germany who used to live in Dairsie, Fife and went to Cupar, Auchtermuchty and Guardbridge A&F clubs. “I never dared to play anything there. I seem to be the only St Andrews student that ever was seen at one of those meetings”. Thanks for brightening my day, Mr Doyle. It is time also to start advertising your Festivals, e-mail me for the media-pack with rates and sizes. Think at least 2-3 months ahead, to give people time to put your festival in the diary. Two NAAFC occasions coming up in June – hope you got your BAFFI votes in for the AGM and celebrity luncheon, (Contact Charlie Kirkpatrick for lunch attendance). You will have to polish up your golf clubs for the GOLF day on the 21st. (Contact Nicol McLaren). I don’t golf, but may just turn up to listen to the music afterwards. During the summer, could Club Secretaries please check their information online and let me know if it is correct, the same goes for guest artistes, please check the list online and see if your contact details are correct. I am away to Denmark in May with almost 200 Scottish Country Dancers, so if I could ask you to please let me have your contributions to the June magazine as early as you can, as I intend to be ahead of myself this month, and bear with me if I don’t reply to your queries quickly. Have a great summer, keep in touch.

T
he 2015 festival, held on 28th March, turned out to be a great success. Entries were at an excellent level, almost 70, and the quality of playing kept the larger than normal audience entertained all day. The adjudicator for the day was young local musician and teacher Robert Menzies, making his first venture into adjudicating. Robert adjudicated both the accordion and fiddle sections and was kept busy from 9.30 until 4.30. His adjudications were constructive and helpful, which we are sure the competitors will take on board for the future. Thanks Robert a good job well done! Our thanks go to all the players, who we hope
enjoyed competing enough to come back next year and to encourage their friends to enter, to the teachers who are obviously doing a great job and to all the parents who support the entrants. The format of the festival changed this year and adjudications and prize-giving were done at the end of the day. Feedback from players and spectators so far has been very positive, but the committee would be interested in any comments that will help us to develop the festival further. Without the help of the many stewards who give their time willingly we would not have a festival, and our thanks go to them for the superb job they did. Here’s to next year.

ANNAN ST ANDREW At the March meeting MC Jack Murdoch welcomed Davie Graham from Sanguar, who recently cerebrated his 85th birthday, and extended birthday greetings to him on behalf of the club. The guest band was the Callum Wilson Scottish Dance Band with Callum on lead accordion, Arthur Speed on second accordion, Callum’s good lady, Ena, on keyboard and George Shiels on drums. Callum and the band cut their first LP in 1980 and have now produced several CDs. They commenced by playing for various dances. The local players, accompanied by Ian Wilson on keyboard and Billy Porter on drums were: Richard Brown from Aspatria playing a Square Tango on piano accordion. Lawrence Wannop from Great Orton played for an Eva Three Step followed by a quickstep on piano accordion. George Shanks from Castle Douglas played two sets on the mouth organ. David Bell from Carlisle played for a Jazz Twinkle on piano accordion. Newbie Park from Carlisle played a waltz
Neil Hardie, Arbroath
followed by a quickstep on piano accordion. Les Hurst from Carlisle played two contrasting sets of music on piano accordion, an intricate set of Continental tunes followed by a set of Scottish tunes. Jim Fraser from Dumfries played for a Pride of Erin Waltz on piano accordion. Norman Swainson from Wigton played for a Square Tango followed by a quickstep on piano accordion. Finally John Waugh from Carlisle played for an Edinburgh Mixture on piano accordion. The guest band then returned and concluded by playing for further dancing. Jack Murdoch thanked the band and the local players. ARBROATH It was standing room only at our April meeting which
commenced with our AGM. Tony Simpson was in the Chair and welcomed our very large audience and our guest artistes The Neil Hardie SDB. The usual formalities associated with the AGM took place with the re-election of the Club Committee. Entrance fees were increased by a nominal 50p. Music was soon under way. On accordions respectively were: Fred Davidson, David Stokes, Margaret Patullo, John Elliott, Eric Davidson, John White and David Fairbairn. Avril Abbott was on drums and Dave Smith was the only fiddler. Sharing piano duties for the various groups were: Tony Simpson, John White and Bill Ford. Thanks to all for the great music. The Neil Hardie SDB had the ‘wow’ factor. What a super sound from this five piece

band with Neil Hardie on lead accordion, Andrew Morton on drums, Jim Nicol on piano, Brian Forbes on 2nd box and Caroline Hardie on fiddle. The musical balance was spot on, and they had the audience enthralled. All too soon time caught up with us and before leaving the stage the band was asked for an encore, delighting the audience. Comments from people leaving were: “absolutely brilliant, great choice of a band, fantastic evening” etc. Great to see so many people almost dancing out the door. Next month, 9th May, we welcome Roddy Matthews and Gary Forrest. EA BALLOCH The guest was meant to be Seamus O’Sullivan, but Seamus was recovering from hip replacement surgery. We hope it all went well, Seamus. John Burns was therefore the new guest artist and brought with him Gary Sutherland and Craig Paton. Three Champion accordionists in one band, Gary played 2nd box with Craig playing piano, and on drums to complete the line up was Gary’s brother Allan Sutherland who is a superb drummer. How John managed to get this band together at such short notice is nothing short of amazing. We had a smashing night. Many thanks go to John and the boys for stepping in at such short notice and providing us with a great evening’s entertainment. Our local and not so local players were on accordion: me, William Scott, Bill Butler, Erchie
Gerdiner, Heather Murray and Henry, Alistair McLeod, John Weaks, Don MacDonald, Duncan MacKinnon and Tom Cruikshank. We were also delighted to hear for the first time 86 year old David Landers, who only took up playing the box 3 years ago. Hope to see you back David. Drummers were Jim Gunn, Neil McGillviry, Gerry Boxhall and Graham Read. Our only moothie player was Jim O’Hare, and our resident pianist as usual was John Strachan. MC for the evening was Jim Gray. John Scott BANFF The March meeting kicked off with Andy welcoming a reasonable attendance. All floor players went on stage to provide an opening stramash. Andy on keyboard, Graham Wilson on second accordion and newcomer Jim Gray joined forces playing a selection of reels, jigs and slow airs. Graham went on to lead with Jim and Andy and this was followed by Andy taking the lead to finish the stramash. We welcomed David Vernon as our guest who began his performance with many lively sets. David has a style of his own and to put the icing on the cake his presentation contained some very witty jokes, some with a musical content. After, tea, coffee and sandwiches Jim Graham and Andy began the second half with various tempos and variations, after which David was raring to go. His repertoire consisted of a a world musical
tour with mixture of Swedish, Italian and Scottish, etc. His nimble accuracy shone through especially when playing his own incredible version of The High Level Hornpipe and Orange Blossom Special. The evening was brought to a close by Andy thanking Dave for his brilliant performance, Graham and Jim for their contributions and of course to the company for their presence. Alison Coutts BIGGAR 8th March at the Biggar Bowling Club saw a full house to hear the Neil Hardie SDB. Neil was ably supported by his sister Caroline on fiddle, Brian Forrest on second accordion, Andrew Morton on drums and Jim Nicol on keyboard. As always a great choice of dance tunes, well played with bags of ‘oomph’, nice tempos and a lovely fiddle solo from Caroline. Scottish dance music as it should be. Being the day after the Inchyra Festival Competitions the youngsters were less numerous, but we still had plenty of local talent to entertain us. But first congratulations to Emma Dickson who refilled the display cabinet at home with ‘Firsts’ in the Senior M,S&R, the Open Musette Solo and the Open Classical Solo, a 2nd in the Open Trad Accordion Solo and a 3rd in the Own Composition (with her jig Tom Hope of Nisbet). Local players on accordion were: Davy Millar, Ronnie Johnston, Charlie Todd, Emma Dickson, Fraser Hewitt, Jim Gold, India Smith, John Weaks,

In Memory Bert Rae
March 12th March 1932 – 25th March 2015
R
obert Tweedie Rae was born at Castle Douglas Hospital to his farming parents Robert Baden Powell Rae and Lizzie Templeton Tweedies. He left school at 14 to farm with his dad, but later became an insurance salesman with Pearl Assurance until his retirement in 1992. Bert was well known. He started playing in the early 50’s and played with many fine musicians in many wonderful bands. He travelled the length and breadth of Dumfries and Galloway, and must have played in every village hall in the district. The mathematician in me has worked out that without doubt this would have meant that he had played at about 15,000 events in his lifetime. Of course in his younger days he was the dashing band leader that all of the woman were chasing (or so he told me) and he and Nancy, his first wife, met up at the dances around the village of Rhonehouse. They courted and then got married in 1956 and Alison and Robert soon came along. Nancy sadly passed away in 1992. He played at the KBT Academy Candlemas for just over 60 years, his enthusiasm for these events ever high. Bert was delighted that the kids in the Academy were being taught “proper dancing”, as he put it. Over the past few years, dad’s enthusiasm for playing, if anything, seemed to have increased, (I suppose he had more time after he retired), and he could be often seen in such exotic far-away places as Cumbria, Newcastle and Aberdeen. Bert later met Doris whom he married in 1993 at Gretna Green, and to the very end they were each others constant companions. Together they and others ran the Britannia Accordion & Fiddle Club, an organisation that he was immensely proud off to be involved in. They also raised huge amounts of money for various charities and organisations as
well as supplied countless hours and evenings of enjoyment. In fact due to his Charity work, Bert was awarded The Dumfries and Galloway Community Champion Award in 2011. Bert passed away after a short illness, and it just leaves me to say: “My dad will be remembered by many different people for many different reasons, but more important than WHY you remember him is HOW you remember him. Perhaps the best way to remember him is as the photo shows: “with an accordion on his knees, and a smile on his face.” l

Off The Beaten Track Tom Orr Band CPR002
If ever we needed proof that the future of traditional Scottish music is secure, then this fabulous CD from Tom Orr and his line-up of equally talented musicians will surely put the issue to bed once and for all. Joining Tom are Scott Nichol and Scott Gordon (selected tracks) on second box, Marie Fielding on fiddle, Fraser MacInnes on drums, Brian Cruickshank on bass and Gordon Middler and Craig Paton (selected tracks) on piano. The opening track Thunderstruck begins with an exciting piano intro by Craig Paton and from the first chord you know you’re in for a musical treat. This CD demonstrates very effectively the high standard that our young musicians have reached and continue to maintain. I’m sure older musicians of a certain vintage will marvel at how much the genre has grown and developed in recent years. Tom and his band have not fallen into the trap of trying to play everything at breakneck speed, a modern day trait I personally hate. The band’s playing is disciplined and precise with the music
executed in strict tempo. This is one of those rare releases where I could give you an excellent reason to like every single track, it really is that good! This makes it a little unfair, therefore, to call out specific sets, so please keep in mind they are my personal favourites. Not only is Tom a fine accordion player, but his talents on piano also come to the fore in the tune Lochanside accompanying Marie Fielding, who is without question one of the finest fiddle players around. Their arrangement and sensitive treatment of this great classic is sublime and will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Another fabulous track is The Man That Shot the Windmill, which moves along at a cracking pace with the standard of musicianship precise, accurate and crisp. I also thoroughly enjoyed the great set of waltzes featuring the tunes The Highest Apple, Mary of The Witching Eyes, Castle In The Glen and Garry Porch’s. Every track on this CD is brilliant and played to the highest standard. If you happen to buy this CD (and I strongly recommend you do) and it doesn’t hit you straight away, play it again and play it louder. Then play it again and you’ll love it as much as I do. l
