Four weeks to go

Three weeks to go

With three weeks to go, you’ll start thinking more about your new home. It’s time to start thinking of which boxes you can pack fi rst; if you have a spare bedroom, that may be the perfect place to start.

You may start taking fi xed items off your walls and packing some of your winter clothing. If you have children, pets or both, it may also be time to start fi nding somewhere for them to go during moving day. If you have a freezer, it may be time to start using up the contents – is anyone up for some freezer tapas?

Two weeks to go

The excitement should be ramping up by now and your preparation should be following suit too. At this point, you may have started to pack several rooms up, although, for those in apartments or fl ats, this may happen closer to moving day. If you’ve got green fi ngers, it may be time to consider how you’re transporting your plants to your new home. If you’re worried about transporting them, can anyone take care of them until you’ve moved?

Also, do you have any subscriptions that get delivered to your home? Whether it’s meal planning services, alcohol or magazines, this is the perfect time to pause them. After this week, it’s going to be all systems go, and you may forget otherwise.

One week to go

By now, moving home is all you can think about. For those on social media, you’ve probably pre-planned the photo you’ll post on moving day ten times over by now. In the week before moving, you’ll need to defrost your freezer, clean your white goods and fi nish packing – you don’t want a lastminute dash as your van arrives!

Also, one vital moving tip is to pack an open fi rst box containing essentials for your fi rst night in your new home. You should include chargers, medication, pyjamas and, if you wear them, glasses. Moving Day

Moving day is a rollercoaster of emotions, energy and stress, especially if you’re going it alone. Those using a removals company will fi nd their day is considerably more straightforward. Ensure you’re packed and ready to go when your removal company arrives. If possible, collecting your keys ahead of their arrival speeds the process up too.

Then, carry out fi nal checks before bidding farewell to your old home. Are all your windows and doors locked? Do you have your box of essentials? Those on metered utilities should take a note of readings too.

All set to go? Head over to your new home. It may take some time to unload boxes from the van, but once done, you’ll be busy thinking of ways to turn your new house into a home.
