the season a l etter from the owners In the fast-moving world of 2015, success comes to those who know how to change. For a family-owned retailer like Boyds, it’s not just a matter of presenting the latest and greatest merchandise. We are constantly evolving our in-store experience to delight our regular customers and, of course, to attract a new generation of shoppers. Speaking of the Millennials, we are pleased to welcome the first member of the fourth generation of our family to Boyds. He’s Alex Gushner, Kent’s son and the namesake of our founder, Alexander Gushner. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Alex worked at Ermenegildo Zegna in New York City. Alex brings to Boyds a special focus on Made-toMeasure. What else is in store for you? This spring we’ve introduced some fantastic new lines, both in men’s and women’s, too numerous to mention. However, many of these new designers are shown throughout this magazine. We’ve opened a custom shirt shop, and we’re developing plans to remodel and remerchandise our store. As we look to the future, we’re always careful to preserve those things that are core to the Boyds heritage. We have the largest in-store tailor shop in the Philadelphia area, if not the entire United States, and amenities such as free parking on Chestnut Street, our signature personal service and expert style counsel, just to name a few.

sart o r i a parte n o pea Angelo Blasi is considered the master tailor, cutter and creator of the unparalleled and superb handcrafted tradition of worldclass Neopolitan tailoring. Born around World War I, he became an apprentice tailor while still in his teens. He worked in a tailor shop making handmade suits for Napoli’s well-heeled and fashionable gentlemen. He was promoted to head cutter and master tailor, and then after the second World War Angelo Blasi founded his eponymous tailor shop on Naples’ most prestigious shopping street. Sartoria Angelo Blasi employed more than 100 tailors. Many of today’s master tailors received their early training at this bespoke Sartoria. Sartoria Partenopea, which was founded in 1994, was created by Angelo Blasi’s nephew, who is named after his uncle. The love for international style, elegance and perfection were embedded in the Blasi family. From its beginning, Sartoria Partenopea set out to create beautiful, handcrafted clothing for stylish, yet discreet gentlemen. Mauro Blasi is a third-generation Blasi who joined his father in the family business. Mauro, 33 years old, has brought a very youthful, modern and light expression to the garments. Today, Sartoria Partenopea garments have particular success with younger sartorial enthusiasts throughout the world and can be found in the finest men’s shops around the world.

• Inspired by volume and proportion rather than fashion trends, French designer Pierre Hardy is renowned for his sculptural shoes. After honing his skills at Christian Dior and Hermès, Hardy launched his own line in 1999, translating a unique modernist vision into exquisite boots, wedges and pumps.

Launched in Spring 2007, Gianvito Rossi immediately established itself as a niche label with a sharp focus on beautiful, high-end footwear. Designed to exalt the woman rather than overwhelm her, the new, feminine silhouettes were in marked contrast to the heavy, aggressive shoes that dominated at the time. Gianvito Rossi shoes were sophisticated and refined and, most importantly, absolutely modern. The label ushered in a return to elegance, to sensuality and to timeless style tinged with coolness.

The new vision struck like lightning and fashion influences and chic women everywhere became transfixed by the sophisticated designs that sizzled subtly with their sexiness. st y l e & g r a ce An Evening of Style & Grace (hosted by Kenneth and Faatimah Gamble) took place on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the University of the Arts. Boyds is proud to have partnered with the Gambles for this event, showcasing a selection of menswear during the evening’s fashion show. All proceeds from the fashion show benefit the “Pearls of Wisdom” and “From Boys to Men” Character Building and Social Etiquette Program. From Boys to Men & Pearls of Wisdom Programs The signature programs, “From Boys to Men” & “Pearls of Wisdom,” are unique out-of-school leadership, life-skills and self-esteem development programs for adolescent males and females. What began more than 25 years ago as an etiquette course focusing on refinement and social protocol has since expanded to include health education, leadership and life-skills training. The goal is to prepare these scholars for success in college, career and citizenship.

m a d e - to - me a s u r e : The A r t o f Per s o nal E l eg a n c e The biggest trend in menswear is the rise of Made-to-Measure—having tailored clothing made for you as opposed to buying it off the rack. We chatted with Alex Gushner, great-grandson of Boyds’ founder and the store’s new Made-to-Measure Manager, about the phenomenon. Alex, why has Made-to-Measure become so popular? It ’s mostly about choice and self-expression. Instead of choosing just from what’s on the rack in your size, you have a truly massive selection of fabrics. You can have any material, weight, color and pattern. You can further personalize your garment with a funky lining, choice of buttons and so forth. With Made-to-Measure, you really become part of the design process. Describe the Boyds approach to Made-to-Measure. Because so many of the designers we represent are Italian, we call our program Boyds Su Misura—the Italian term for Made-to-Measure. But in fact, nearly every tailored clothing designer at Boyds, Italian or not, offers Made-to-Measure options. Step one is to determine which brand best suits the client. That sounds easy. If I like the Canali suits I buy off the rack at Boyds, I’m going to be happy having Canali tailor my Made-to-Measure suits. What comes next? Next comes the fitting. This is done by a specialist, who takes a great many measurements by hand. It ’s part science and part art, in that his trained eye will see and correct for idiosyncrasies and postural imperfections. And after the fitting, I gather, comes the fun of selecting fabric, lining, buttons and so forth. Do some customers find all that choice intimidating? Not at all, with the assistance of one of our specialists. He’ll guide you through the choices and make recommendations, just as when you’re selecting off the rack. Once all of my measurements and preferences are sent to Milan, Naples or wherever, how long do I need to wait for my clothing? Turnaround varies by designer, but in almost all cases, we achieve delivery in four to six weeks. We then ask you to try on your new clothing so, if needed, we can ultra-fine-tune the fit. Is it true that once you try Made-to-Measure, you never go back to off the rack? No, it ’s not true! Most of our Made-to-Measure clients continue to buy some of their clothing off the rack because, as you know, we’re famous for achieving superior fit through in-store tailoring. For wardrobe basics, buying off the rack at Boyds makes perfect sense. And when you want to express individuality and make a garment uniquely your own, that ’s when you turn to Made-to-Measure. 

By then, of course, stardom had come calling. Lawrence played Katniss Everdeen, the arrow-toting heroine in The Hunger Games film series. The insane commercial success of the first film—it’s one of the highest-grossing movies of all time—solidified Lawrence’s bankability. It also brought a legion of naysayers to their knees: She proved a woman can carry a billion-dollar Hollywood action franchise. Despite becoming a paparazzi favorite and the subject of relentless gossip in recent years, Lawrence has avoided the usual pitfalls of a Hollywood ingénue. She exudes a grounded authenticity and has an endearing, self-effacing humor that shines through whether she is rocking Alexander Wang or covered in blue paint for a role. Whatever she is doing seems to be working: At 23, Lawrence became the youngest actress to have been nominated for three Academy Awards, two of them for lead roles. Never mind that connoisseurs knew it for its dramatic range, capable of endearing sweetness but also of bone-dry sophistication. In the mainstream market, Riesling was recognized largely for its syrupy parts in cloying productions like Blue Nun. “It just sort of fell into that place in people’s minds,” says Janie Brooks Heuck, general manager of Brooks Winery in Amity, Oregon. “It was the sweet dessert wine you had with cheese or chocolate. It’s been a really tough reputation to shake.” Heuck has spent much of the past decade helping Riesling wriggle from that pigeonhole. The winery she runs sits in the heart of the Willamette Valley, where Riesling was first planted in the 1960s but has only more recently come into its own. Credit for its emergence goes in part to Heuck’s late brother, Jimi, who launched Brooks Winery in 1998. Around that time, many Oregon growers were busy tearing up their Riesling vines and replacing them with more lucrative varietals such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. A passionate vintner who’d spent six years in Europe enjoying Rieslings of myriad styles, Jimi was more bullish on the grape. He implored local growers to preserve their plantings, promising, in turn, that he would buy their fruit. The wines he wound up making helped reveal Riesling as anything but a one-trick pony—indeed, they strike nearly every note on the dry-to-dulcet scale. When Jimi died unexpectedly in 2004, Janie stepped in to run the operation, maintaining the winery’s varietal focus even as she expanded its portfolio. Brooks today produces 12 styles of Riesling that showcase the grape in all its glory. Like her brother, Heuck likes her Rieslings lean and clean, so that even Brooks wines with high residual sugar showcase a subtle tension, their sweetness held in check to create a light, refreshing finish.

“I can’t tell you how many times someone will come by the tasting room and tell me that they don’t like Riesling because it’s too sweet,” Heuck says. “Then I pour them one of ours and watch their eyes go wide.” As much as any varietal, Riesling expresses a sense of place. And there are few better backdrops for it than the Willamette Valley, where the cool climate and mineral-rich soil help coax out the bright and complex characteristics of a naturally high-acid grape. Similar traits can be found in wines from other Riesling hotbeds around this country. To sample vintages from, say, Chateau Ste. Michelle outside Seattle or Red Newt Cellars in New York’s Finger Lakes region is to taste a wine that gives the lie to mawkish stereotypes. To Janie Heuck, it seemed the sticky image would never die. But in recent years, an increasingly educated winedrinking public has embraced the varietal for all that it can be, as evidenced by Riesling’s growing presence on restaurant wine lists and market shelves. It was a long time coming. But Heuck knew that the tipping point approached as far back as the fall of 2009, when a sommelier rang her from Washington, D.C., requesting a shipment of her finest white. The party turned out to be the Obama Administration’s first state dinner at the White House, where Brooks’ 2006 Ara Riesling was served during the second course, paired with red lentil soup. As news of the dinner broke, Heuck’s phone started ringing off the hook. The 2006 vintage sold out within days, along with half of the 2007, a choice that proved popular on both sides of the political aisle. “It was interesting,” Heuck says. “Half of the people who contacted us said, ‘If the wine’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for us.’ And the other half said, ‘I’m only buying this because I know it’s the only good decision he’s ever going to make.’” 

The electric motors put out 500 hp and a blistering 1,000 ft.-lbs. of torque—and boy oh boy, does this coupe roar to life! There is absolutely no lag when you mash the pedal; the power comes on immediately. With a 0–60 time that clocks in at just under 3.4 seconds, it’s fast! For reference, that time is faster than a 2015 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, a perennial supercar contender. To help increase overall performance, the Renovo engineers devised new lightweight lithium ion batteries that help put the car ’s curb weight at 3,250 lbs. But if you think it ’s all about the island’s exclusive Sandy Lane resort (site of Tiger Woods’ ill-fated 2004 wedding) and its Tom Fazio-designed Green Monkey course, think again. Golf Digest says the true gem among the eight golf courses on this avocado-shaped Caribbean island roughly the size of New Orleans is the course at Royal Westmoreland Golf and Country Club. And magazines, you know, sometimes get it right. (continued)

Noted golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the 18 holes at Royal Westmoreland, which opened for play in 1994. He draped the 7,045-yard, par 72 course over an old sugarcane plantation pockmarked with abandoned limestone quarries. Jones likes to boast that pro golfer and Masters champion Ian Woosnam, who owns a home nearby, says Royal Westmoreland’s par-3s are some of the best he’s ever played. Once you conquer them, it’s easy to understand why. Each requires sailing the ball over water, gullies, bunkers or a nasty combination. Royal Westmoreland unspools over hills and ridges, dipping into deep limestone creases, curving around tangles of jungle and playing peekaboo with the sea. It’s as if Jones didn’t plot a route, but simply intuited one. Along the way, he mixes in some classic design elements—the par-3 No. 3, for example, is a Redan hole, where the raised green slopes downward and away— and includes plenty of risk-versus-reward drama. On the par-4 sixth hole, I discovered, your tee ball has to clear a ravine, then the next shot must thread a narrow chute defined on one side by a coral wall. If you happen to clip an edge of the coral, there’s no predicting where your ball will ricochet. Jones lets you catch your breath on No. 13, a monster 595-yard par-5 he aligned to catch the prevailing wind. A well-placed drive can sail to within striking distance of an eagle. If the tricky green, the ocean view and the estate homes don’t distract you, then the golf course’s troop of native green monkeys surely will.

Speaking of distractions, your off-the-course hours here promise to be equally delightful. True, not all of Barbados is as tony as the expensive red-tiled homes and gated subdivisions you’ll see near Royal Westmoreland. But there’s an undeniable charm to simple island life here. And it’s easy to embrace once you’re beyond the cacophony of auto dealerships, dingy gas stations and low-slung commercial buildings that front the main highway. Live large by living like a Bajan—that is, a Barbados resident. Hop on a bus, which will take you nearly anywhere for less than a dollar. Spend a weekend night dining beachside in the fishing town of Oistins, where you’ll revel in fresh-grilled fresh fish, cold Banks beer and lobsters as big as your arm. Tour at least one of the island’s three rum distilleries, then stick around for free samples and some terrific rum punch. Rum has been distilled on Barbados for 300 years. It’s the lifeblood of the Caribbean (the island is considered part of that region though technically it’s in the Atlantic) and there’s no sign that’s going to end any time soon— even if some of the younger crowd prefers beer. That’s something I learned over a pickup game of dominoes at one of the hundreds of rum shops on the island, the local gathering spots where Bajans pass the time and catch up on the gossip. Anywhere you stop in Barbados, there’s always room at the table. By evening, pull up a chair. Tomorrow promises to be another splendid day on the course. 

I vividly recall my initial trip to this rugged island in the North Atlantic, starting with my arrival at Keflavik, the international airport that lies outside of the capital city, Reykjavik. As the plane landed, all I could see was a seemingly endless expanse of jagged black lava rocks surrounding the airstrip, a landscape utterly jarring and truly foreign. Had we gone off course and landed on the Sea of Tranquility? c o nt inu e d. . .

Rest assured, it got even stranger and more dramatic—but also profoundly and sublimely beautiful—in the days to come and on repeat visits. I’ve spent blissful days in the endless sunshine of Reykjavik, a city of 120,000 that appears to have been assembled from colored Lego blocks, and fun nights there too—it’s known for its all-night party scene. There are art museums, a Viking Village with special themed architecture, and year-round music festivals in this compact city, where everybody seems to speak perfect English. It is a great walking town, filled with shops and boutiques, a place that prides itself on local designers of clothes and jewelry along streets such as Bankastraeti, Laugavegur and Skolavordustigur. Walk along the waterfront and up to the extraordinary Church of Hallgrímur with its 244-foot steeple, the city’s tallest building, for a bird’s-eye view. Venture slightly out of town to the Blue Lagoon, a mineral-rich geothermal spa set in a lava field, and soak in the deep blue waters, which are said to be therapeutic. Dine at Fish Market, which I think of as Reykjavik’s classiest restaurant, and then, if you’ve got stamina, hit the club scene at places like Kaffibarinn that can crank until dawn. Iceland is the world’s eighth-largest island, with 3,100 miles of jagged coastline and fjords. Its settlements date back to the ninth century A.D. when Norwegian chieftain Ingólfur Arnarson came ashore in his longboat. I’ve toured the country in four-wheel drive vehicles along the Golden Circle drive, a 300kilometer loop from Reykjavik into cen-

tral Iceland and back that is a great way to get a true taste of the country. The terrain can be wild and stark, a wonderland of hot springs and geysers, with steam drifting over rocky ground. My coastal drive brought me past endless rifts of snow-covered mountains and alongside deep fjords lapped by the sea. In my visits over the years I’ve spent days riding Icelandic horses—not ponies, as they’re erroneously called—participating in the great rettir , when wild horses and flocks of sheep are brought down from the high mountains. And I’ve found the people a delight. Spend a day or two outdoors with Icelanders, who are notably direct and friendly, and Iceland will confound your preconceptions of “northern” reserve. If they offer you a taste of Brennivín, the local cumin- and caraway-flavored take on the colorless whiskey Americans call white lightning, you’ve been truly welcomed. If you time your visit to the colder months, you stand a great chance of seeing the aurora borealis, the Northern Lights, which to me look like shimmering multicolored harp strings rippling across the sky. That said, I prefer summer days, when daylight lingers nearly ’round the clock. They’re perfect for hiking or salmon fishing in wild rivers. Stopping for the night in even the most humble settlement, I could count on finding a very civilized public sauna and steam bath, fueled by the underground activity that makes Iceland a geothermal paradise and one of the most changeable places on the planet. From the air it can be just as dramatic. On a flight from Geneva a few years

back, I peered out the window at the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, the smoldering giant that had impaired North Atlantic air traffic for a few weeks in 2010. It was a reminder that volcanoes are at the heart of this remarkable country—you’ve had a visual sample if you’ve seen the Icelandic location in HBO’s Game of Thrones or Ben Stiller ’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty . Set out on the Golden Circle and about an hour from Reykjavik is Thingvellir National Park, a historic rift valley where the Icelandic parliament first convened in 930 A.D. A stone’s throw away is the new Ion Luxury Adventure Hotel, which celebrates and embraces Icelandic natural beauty and ruggedness like no other property. It ’s situated on the slopes of Mt. Designed to fit into the landscape and built of green and sustainable materials, the Ion is striking, with a minimalist exterior of glass panels and concrete walls and pillars. Inside, the architects have taken those same simple materials and added some sharply contrasting ones. A concrete wall is juxtaposed with a stark white downy comforter on a deeply relaxing king-size bed, while the artwork can be a massive blackand-white photographic mural of an Icelandic horse’s head. Thanks to the oversized windows, it ’s easy to contrast this snug comfort with views of windblown grass and mountains that seem to go on unimpeded for a hundred miles. There are walk-in rain showers, and everywhere you look the focus is on celebrating a sense of place. That means the organic toiletries, art and background music are Icelandic, and so are the craft beers. I like the small touches within as well, such as the use of driftwood and lava to further connect you to the environment. Dining at the Ion is in the Silfra restaurant, which showcases local ingredients, especially Iceland’s famed lamb,

arctic char and abundant shellfish, along with Icelandic cheeses and homemade breads. The architects arranged the property for viewing the spectacle in the sky from the hotel’s Northern Lights bar, an open room with sofas, cushions and candles. If weather allows, there’s also an open deck as well as a long hot tub below the hotel that is supplied from the nearby geothermal plant. And when you’re sated with comfort and seek adventure instead? Not far from the entrance you’ll find a network of well-marked hiking trails that have been color-coded by difficulty. Thingvellir National Park is 10 minutes away. And the Ion leases a section of lakefront for catch-and-release fly fishing for trout. There’s a rich menu of day trips in which you can visit hot-spring lagoons, see active volcanic areas, walk to waterfalls or even go river rafting or on an off-road jeep tour. One of the biggest attractions of all is Lake Pingvallavatn, just 10 minutes away. This is where Eurasia collides with North America. The tectonic plates that mark the edges of these continents come close to each other and beckon divers from all around the world to swim

in crystal clear waters. But for me, the quintessential Icelandic activity takes place on horseback. The Icelandic horse possesses a rare fifth gait known as a tolt, a powerful clipclop pace that is ideal for rough ground and surprisingly comfortable for occasional riders. At the Ion, there’s a threehour tour to the Öflus area in southern Iceland. If you’re a bit more confident in the saddle, take the longer ride as I did, a seven-hour trip to the Reykjadalur Valley, where you have chance to dismount and loll about in hot springs. The Ion was a great base for exploring the Golden Circle, cocooning and contemplating the Icelandic landscape—and for a spa treatment and a hot spring soak.
