MTA VOICE HEARD IN NT BUDGET
from Motor Trade March 2021 NT
by Boylen
The MTA’s presence has been felt by the NT Government in the lead up to its 2020-21 Budget.
The MTA’s submission called for:
• The need for electric vehicle training in the Territory
• Increased funding for apprenticeships and traineeships
• A stronger approach by Consumer Affairs to target backyard and unlicensed operators.
• Payroll tax reductions
• Fixing CTP inconsistencies
“It was good to see $23 million allocated to apprenticeship and traineeship funding, as well as a range of employment incentives,” said Kaes Cillessen, the MTA’s Industry and Government Engagement Manager.
“Moving forward, we are arguing that the NT’s payroll tax should be more competitive with the rest of the nation.
“And CTP on motorbikes over 260CC is also way out of line with the rest of the country. It jumps from $291 for motorbikes under 260CC to an incredible $751.”
VISIBLE PRESENCE
The MTA has made a concerted effort to have a more visible presence and advance the priorities of the Northern Territory motor trade industry.
“Last year we started the discussions which have led, for example, to the proposal for the NT Government to work with the MTA for a hybrid and battery electric vehicle course to be delivered in the NT.
“We will continue to make submissions on matters of policy and funding priorities, and to work with the government on an ongoing basis to deliver what the local automotive industry needs.”
