When porn star HARRY LOUIS isn’t canoodling on a beach with fashion designer Marc Jacobs, he has been known to party the night away at Gigolo – which celebrates its 1st Birthday at the Shadow Lounge tonight (Wed 18 Apr) – as this sizzling image proves. If you fancy hanging out with a load of Soho’s hottest hunks, including Latino porn stars Jean Franko and Lucio Saints, then get yourself on the dancefloor from 10pm – this is set to be a stomper!

TBB were at the gala night (VIP, no less) of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at Heaven last Monday, and what a show it was! Producer Richard Crichton has taken Mozart’s opera and given it a new lease of life in 1980s London, where playboy Don Giovanni leaps out of the closet as a randy nightclub owner pursuing young men. The production, which is benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation,, is showing again this Sunday and Monday (22 and 23 Apr) as well as next Sunday and Monday (29 and 30 Apr). For tickets, check out www.dongiovannitheopera.com. And if opera’s not your thing, don’t worry; the show’s full of witty lines and naughty songs. And lead Duncan Rock’s ’s buff bod is a sight to behold too!

ADRELLA

1956 - 2012

Following the sad news of cabaret legend ADRELLA [aka Peter Williams-Steadman]’s death last week, we got in contact with friend of 30 years EBB-ON-KNEE who enlightened us on the man behind make-up. ‘I first met Peter at Harpoon Louie’s after his performance and from then on he took me under his wing. To describe him in a few words that encapsulate him is hard but a few that are Adrella apt would have to include artistic, compassionate, talented, humorous, creative, helpful, charming, handsome, outrageous and clever. He was also vulnerable, courageous, self-deprecating, a perfectionist and visionary – anyone who went to Camp Camp would understand that. And he was officially the world’s second best Shirley Bassey, thoughtful, unique and loving, but the greatest word that encapsulates Peter for me is friend, and one who created a legacy that will endure eternally.’ Peter’s funeral takes place next Monday (30 Apr) at midday at Golders Green Crematorium. And we’re assured tribute events will be organised at both the Black Cap and RVT in the near future.

ALL THAT JAZZ

The Drama Queens

Due to massive demand, Drama Queens Artistic Director SPIKE RHODES is hosting another show of the troupe’s amazing spectacle K & E… And All That Jazz at the Two Brewers this Monday from 8pm. Spike told us, ‘The whole company was blown away by the amazing response to the Drama Queens’ first show at our new home. Both nights sold out and we received standing ovations and wonderful reviews. And the show on the 23rd will be dedicated to the memory of Adrella, who was a close friend and supporter of the company.’

CLUBS

THE CLUBBING CAPITAL COMES TO OUR CAPITAL JUANJO MARTIN’S TOP 10 TRACKS

THIS IS IBIZA

SATURDAY 21ST APRIL, 11PM – 6AM SUPERSTAR DJ JUANJO MARTIN IS BACK IN LONDON WITH HIS VERY OWN CLUB BRAND THIS SATURDAY. THIS IS IBIZA AT FIRE WILL SHOWCASE THE BEST THIS MAN AND THIS ISLAND HAS TO OFFER, SO EXPECT EXCLUSIVE TRACKS AND A HOT, HOT PARTY CROWD. WE SPOKE TO JUANJO ABOUT HIS UPCOMING EVENT AND HEARD WHAT HE HAS TO SAY. What have been your highlights so far this year? Luckily this year has been one of the best in my professional career. I hope it keeps on going this way. This year has also been a decisive one for me as I left the brand I was working with for over six years and set up my own brand, This Is Ibiza. I have two radio shows, which are broadcast in more than ten countries, and I’ve entered the well-known poll ‘Top 100 DJs’ for the first time, making me the only DJ in my country to do so. I’m also about to start releasing new tracks and remixes, which have taken me a lot of months and hard work in the studio. The first is now available to buy and has been released by Kontor Records – it’s a remix for DJ Lia’s ‘Wicked Game’ and had over 500,000 plays on YouTube within its first week. The next one is ‘Roads’, out on Juicy Music on the 14th May. What have you got planned for this year’s Ibiza season? It’s still being discussed. My team is in charge of it and it’ll be announced very soon. For the moment, I will be next at Pacha Ibiza on 12th May to host a preseason party. Last

season was amazing; I was playing every Tuesday and Friday in Ibiza – Tuesdays at the Ushuaïa Beach Hotel and on Fridays at Privilege, the biggest club in the world with a 15,000 people capacity. The This Is Ibiza brand includes your radio shows [This Is Ibiza Anthem and This Is Ibiza Anthem (Global Edition)] as well as a club night. Why was it created? This Is Ibiza is a brand that I created with the clear aim of deleting stereotypes that intoxicate people nowadays. Underground artists can be mixed with mainstream artists and this is something that today we

can’t find in another festival or club anywhere else. It’s been established as a general rule, apparently, that an ‘underground’ festival should include only ‘underground’ artists. I want to change these thoughts, which is why everyone has a place in my party. Tell us more about the radio shows. This Is Ibiza Anthem (Global Edition) has a techy sound, more underground, whilst This Is Ibiza Anthem has a main room sound. In less than one year they have been broadcast and listened to in more than ten countries. Furthermore, here in Spain, podcasts of Global Edition is number one on the iTunes podcast downloads. And what can we expect from you at the Fire party this weekend? It’s gonna be a very special night. Whenever I come to London I’m filled with energy because the crowd is very intense, so I hope to live one more night with that energy. And as this is a very special set, I will drop some of my new upcoming songs – not yet released – and present them to Fire crowd.

THEATRE

REID ALL ABOUT IT PAM ANN: ‘YOU F’COFFEE’

18TH APRIL – 5TH MAY (EXCEPT 23RD AND 30TH APRIL), FROM 8PM EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE AIR HOSTESS PAM ANN TOUCHES DOWN IN LONDON FOR A NEW SHOW AT THE BLOOMSBURY THEATRE THIS WEEK, AND WITH EXTRA DATES JUST ADDED FOR THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY YOU JUST KNOW IT’S GOING TO BE A GOOD’UN. LUKE TILL SPOKE WITH PAM’S CREATOR CAROLINE REID ABOUT HER CAREER SO FAR AND KNOWING WHERE TO DRAW THE LINE (OR NOT AS THE CASE MAY BE, ESPECIALLY WITH CELEBS). Hello London? Hi Caroline! How are you? I’m good thanks. How’s New York? It’s amazing! It’s gorgeous here – I love it. What was the last flight you took? My last flight was with Delta coming back from Tel Aviv. Delta was amazing. I did some work with SkyTeam, which is part of their alliance, and when I got to the old Pan Am Worldport – that’s their terminal at JFK – everything was so full on, it was like I was the Queen or something. They had me on a buggy and everyone was talking to me – I was treated like a star. I didn’t know what was going on. I thought I was being Punk’d. I thought there were cameras there. It was crazy; the most mental experience ever. Delta was absolutely exceptional. Pam started in 1996. If you think back to the beginning, how has she developed over the years? I’ve travelled a lot since then so that’s helped. When I first started it was awful. It’s been trial and error over the last 15 years but I think I’ve just got it now. Really! Just recently? [laughs] I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll ever get it. I just go out and do it. I don’t want to think too hard about it. Where does Caroline end and Pam begin? I guess I’m a lot harder on stage. I am filthy in my real life, don’t get me wrong, and a lot of the stuff I say on stage is actually my life, but there’s another side to me that I guess people don’t see and they’re the business and serious sides. Everyone has all different sides to them. I guess Pam and I morph occasionally. I think Joan Rivers said something along the lines of ‘comedy helps overcome tragedy’ – did you make any jokes after 9/11? I think Joan Rivers had the right to because she’s a New Yorker. I didn’t think I could at that point because it was still early days for me and I didn’t know how to handle that on the stage. But nowadays I still probably wouldn’t talk about the planes or anything. I’ve never really talked about it because it was such a changing moment in the world. It wasn’t just a terror attack. It was mammoth. It was huge. And so many people were affected by it and no one new how to handle it. It was shocking. Everyone was in a daze around the world. I don’t find that week funny at all. Did it affect your shows at the time? I had to cancel shows! And back then I used to do the safety demos. Anything I said or did people would be like, ‘Oh how could you say that?’ How do you handle people who take offence? There are a lot of people on Facebook who get offended very easily and I find the people who’re most offended are the ones who shouldn’t be offended because it has nothing to do with them. People jump the gun too soon or are hypocrites. When the Costa Concordia capsized I posted a picture of the ship in the water with the caption ‘I said

010 pam_ann.indd 1

I wanted a sea view but this is ridiculous!’ It’s my job. Yeah OK, 25 people died – people die every day – and online they were like, ‘Too soon! Too soon!’ And I was like, ‘Who are you – my fucking school teacher?’ It makes me even more rebellious. And within a week or so they’re all joking about it. It’s just that I did it straight off the back. As a comedian, how do you know where to draw the line? I don’t know where to draw the line. I get myself into some really deep shit and I think one of the reasons why people come to see me is to see me get out of it. I have no filter. I am very opinionated and I like to ruffle people because it means they’re passionate about something. I like sticking the pin in. I think if you’re going to go there you have to go all the way. You can’t hold back. You’ve entertained a ton of celebs too with shows on board flights – how do you know how far to go with them? The further the better with celebrities! Fuck ‘em! Who the fuck do they think they are anyway? [laughs] Seriously. Get over yourselves! I could not give a fuck about celebrities. Great, fantastic, you’re successful, well done! So are a lot of other people. I don’t give any of them special treatment. The only time I

was star struck was when I was touring with Cher. Every night I waited to meet her and finally I met her and I started choking. Because she’s such an icon. I was like, ‘Oh my god. Do you shit?’ [laughs] No, I didn’t really, but do you know what I mean? She was like a doll. And then she just walked off. Would you say that is the highlight of your career as Pam? I think so. It was the most petrifying. It was the only time in my life when I wanted someone to throw fuel over me and set me on fire. I was so scared. But it was a challenge and an accomplishment. I was petrified performing in front of 14,000 who aren’t there to see you or know who you are or give a shit. They wanted ‘If I could turn back time’ but they got ‘Good’ay!’ But it all went well? No doll. Fuck no! Are you kidding? One time we were going from Dublin to Belfast, which is one road - one fucking road - and Cher got lost. Well, Cher’s driver got lost. So Cher’s manager, who was this Australian guy, came running into my dressing room saying Cher was half an hour late and that I had to make my bit longer. He said to put this bag check sketch in I had. I was quite reluctant but he was like, ‘Just fucking do it!’ So I went to my two dancers and talked them through the sketch because they’d never done it before, then I went on stage - ‘Hello Belfast!’ Then I got some poor girl’s bag up from the crowd, did the sketch, wrapped it in cling film, pulled out the ‘coke’, no one laughed, it wasn’t funny, they didn’t know what was going on, it wasn’t set up properly, the energy wasn’t good… And all I could quietly hear in the background was, ‘We want Cher! We want Cher!’ So I wrapped it up. Oh no! I know, right? Frightening! So I came off stage and I was like, ‘Get the car running, we have to go now! Run bitches!’ And I said to Cher’s manager, ‘So, did you like that?’ And he was all, ‘I guess that didn’t quite work, did it?’ No it didn’t, you fucking cunt! And I’m not doing it tomorrow night in Sheffield either. I need to sort Cher’s driver out. Where is the bitch? [laughs] So there you go. And what new things should we look out for in the Bloomsbury Theatre show? Absolutely nothing. [laughs] No, really we have amazing new looks, the set’s amazing, a new Pam Cam that we take round the audience, so that’s fun. And new material, which I’m still writing – I’ll probably write it on the day of the fucking show, it’s the way I work. People say ‘So what’s the show about?’ And I’m like ‘I don’t fucking know!’ It’ll be what it is. And we have a brand new fucking video too – it’s gonna be great. ■ Pam Ann: ‘You F’Coffee’ is at The Bloomsbury Theatre, 15 Gordon Street, WC1H 0AH. ■ www.thebloomsbury.com ■ www.pamann.com

THE RUNNING MAN

JEREMY JOSEPH RUNS THE LONDON MARATHON SUNDAY 22ND APRIL, FROM 9.45AM

G-A-Y promoter Jeremy Joseph runs his third London Marathon this Sunday with the hope of raising even more money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. We spoke to him ahead of the big day and found out the challenges of fundraising, HIV awareness, training and the meaning behind this weekend’s balloon release.

012 marathon.indd 2

You’ve been fundraising for well over a year now. What has the response from the Elton John AIDS Foundation [EJAF] been? They’re very happy with us. Things have changed with a lot of charities now – you can’t just fundraise for them; you actually need to get their permission to use their name. I contacted them recently and said we wanted to continue doing what we’re doing and they were very happy for us to do so. I like the EJAF and one of the reasons we chose them is because it’s very hard to choose which charity to be affiliated with, and the good thing about the EJAF is that you’re not giving money to just them, you’re giving money to lots of charities because they distribute a lot of their cash out to many charities rather than just one. Why did you first begin fundraising? Rather than coming up with just one event, I felt that we didn’t really do enough. I think it’s important for a venue to do things that a) raises awareness, and b) raises money, and I think as a gay venue you have a responsibility for your customers. As G-A-Y continues we get a new influx of customers who are 18 years of age and they don’t get a very good sex education. Numbers of HIV cases are increasing and I thought we should be getting a message across. I just felt we had a duty to do it. What’s been the most challenging thing about continuing to raise money; is it again keeping people engaged? It is. People will get bored but there are people out there having unsafe sex so while that’s going on I don’t think we can actually over-do it. It’s not just about raising money it’s about the awareness as well. The two go hand in hand. Is the awareness working? Because each year new cases of HIV increase, which means more and more people are having unsafe sex. You don’t know if something is working or not, unless someone comes up to you and says I only know about safer sex now because of reading about it in Boyz or QX, or because of the HIV testing day which helped me change the way I do things. But the more noise you make hopefully people will hear and it will make a difference. And if figures are going up then it means that we’re not making enough noise and we need to continue. In fact, whilst figures go up, what we’re doing is even more important. With the HIV

THE BALLOON RELEASE There will be 7 balloon releases with 26 balloons at each release [1 balloon equals 500 people] representing the 91,000 people living with HIV in the UK. People who helped over the past year of fundraising will do each release.

testing day last World AIDS Day, at the beginning we took a lot of flack for it and now we’ve been nominated for two awards – one for ‘Heathcare Communication Campaign of the Year’ at the British Medical Journal Awards. It’s phenomenal that both G-A-Y and 56 Dean Street have been nominated! Whether we win or not we don’t know, but if we do it’ll be amazing. But that fact that a gay venue has been nominated for a campaign for awareness means what we’re doing is making people sit up and take notice. At the time we were worried about people thinking it was a publicity stunt, and to an extent it was; it was a stunt to get people talking about it. And even the people who were against us doing what we did were still talking about it, so it worked. If people are talking about having an HIV test and talking about safer sex, they’re talking about, meaning we’re getting somewhere. Have you had much celebrity support and/or donations from the acts you have on at the club? We have. Adam Lambert donated £5,000 the first year, Kylie sponsored me £1,000, and one year we were six thousand and some odd pounds off the target and Bryan Singer rounded it up for us. Carol McGiffin from Loose Women sponsored me last year and Alyssa Reid, who’s performing this weekend, sponsored me £1,000, so we have had celebrity support. Sophie Ellis-Bextor did a free gig for us when we did the cheque presentation with Lee Ryan too. Why have you decided to hold a balloon release? To be honest with you I thought long and hard. This is my third marathon and although people might think ‘he’s done it twice, he can do it again’, that’s not the case; it actually gets harder each year because you’ve got more damage to your legs but also, and it doesn’t matter how much training you do, anything can go wrong on the day. I didn’t want complacency around what we’re doing so I needed an idea. The balloons represent 91,000 people living with HIV in the UK and it’s estimated that 25% of those people have it but don’t know it, and the whole point of us doing the testing day was to say you need to know because it could save your life, so I thought it would be good if you could see something on the run that would communicate this. And with help Boyz MD David Bridle we’ve chosen red balloons for people living with HIV and don’t know it, which

ASE FINNISH

signifies danger, and yellow for people living with HIV and do know it, which we chose as an optimistic colour in terms of people knowing about their status, seeking the right treatment and getting on with life as best they can. You mentioned that the marathon actually gets more difficult because of various injuries – how was the run for you last year? The first year was easier. Last year was agony because I got a quad injury at about 17 miles. I was in absolute agony. And it’s really worrying me for this year. So it happened at 17 miles, which means there was nine miles still to go... What happened? Did you just power through it? Yeah, just basically run through it. One thing that really helps you is seeing people along the route who know you and hearing them call your name out. At Big Ben last year I think I had tears in my eyes because I was in so much pain. But when you get to Big Ben surely there must be a sense of relief because it means you’re nearly at the end? There is, but there are certain points of the route where you think ‘OK, I can do this’. At the start obviously you think you’re never going to do it because there are still 26 miles, but once you get to Tower Bridge I begin to think it’s possible. Are you looking forward to running it? No. Absolutely dreading it. I’m so nervous. For me, there’s nothing exciting about it at all. But do you feel accomplished at the end? No because there’s rather an anticlimax; you cross the finish line and then it takes you quite a while to get out of the runners’ area and find friends and family. But you’re in so much pain you can’t think of anything. You can’t even walk down stairs afterwards either – it’s so painful. So you’re not looking forward to it, you don’t enjoy it when you’re running it, there’s an anticlimax at the end – what do you get out of it personally? I do get achievement from it. And about a week after you can go round saying it to everyone, which is good, because I think it’s something like only 1% of the country can do it. At school I was the least sporty person around so to finish a marathon is great. But I believe anyone can do it; if I can do it, anybody can. 21

SEX NEWS

MAN UP AND GET TE THT LAUNCHES ITS LATEST CAMPAIGN MAN UP THIS WEEK, URGING GUYS TO VISIT THEIR LOCAL SEXUAL HEALTH CLINIC WITH ONE SIMPLE MESSAGE: THE MORE MEN YOU HAVE SEX WITH, THE MORE OFTEN YOU SHOULD GO FOR A SEXUAL HEALTH CHECK-UP. HERE WE DEMONSTRATE HOW A PREVIOUS PARTNER’S SEXUAL HISTORY CAN AFFECT YOU, EXPLAIN SYMPTOMS OF THE MOST COMMON STIS AND INTRODUCE YOU TO THT’S BRAND NEW FACEBOOK GAME.

CITYBLOKE69: NEVER BEEN TESTED

CHLAMYDIA

Around 5,000 gay men were diagnosed with Chlamydia in 2010. The bacterial infection often has no symptoms at all and, left untreated, it can do serious damage to your balls. Diagnoses of Chlamydia went up over 20% among gay men between 2009 and 2010.

MAN UP: THE GAME Look out for an addictive new game coming soon to Facebook called Man Up. First, choose your character – are you a Sexy Beast, Cool Dude, Furvert or Hot Spunk? Then jump from bed to bed collecting points, but be sure to bank them in the floating clinic as you go. You’ll need to dodge ‘love bugs’ along the way; every time one hits you it will slow you down. The game can also be shared with your Facebook friends, who you can compete

against on the leader board. When it’s game over, you’ll get useful information about sexually transmitted infections and a clinic finder. Keep an eye out for online ads on your favourite gay hook-up sites and on Facebook that will take you to the game. Man Up is part of the new sexual health check-up campaign from Terrence Higgins Trust and CHAPS, and is due to launch this Monday (23 Apr). To have a go, just search for ‘Man Up’ on Facebook.

TESTED SYPHILIS

Gay men make up 8 out of 10 of male Syphilis cases, with up to half getting it from oral sex. A body rash is the telltale sign (especially hands and feet) but many people get no symptoms. Clinics give a blood test to see if you have it, and it’s cured by antibiotic shots. However, untreated you can stay infectious for two years!

HERPES

Blisters on the cock or in the arse are the classic signs but many people get milder symptoms that go undiagnosed. Treatment can keep herpes under control. A cold sore on the lips is caused by a herpes virus and is highly infectious. No kissing, oral sex or rimming if either of you has one (or feel one is on its way) as it will pass on the infection.

GONORRHOEA

In the dick it usually causes a yellowy discharge but in the bum and throat you’re likely to notice nothing. Cases shot up by a third among gay men between 2009 and 2010. Drug-resistant Gonorrhoea is spreading overseas, but in this country it’s still curable with a shot of antibiotics.

GROUP FUN: TESTED 1 YEAR & 6 MONTHS AGO

CARY JAMES, HEAD OF PROGRAMMES AT TERRENCE HIGGINS TRUST, ANSWERS OUR QUESTIONS. What is the main message of this campaign? It aims to tell guys that the more men you have sex with, the more often you should go for a sexual health check-up. It’s as simple as that. Why do you think some guys don’t get screened regularly, if ever? First of all it’s definitely a guy thing. A recent survey found that men were almost twice as likely not to have visited their GP in the last year. There’s also research that shows fewer men go to dentists, ask for advice from a pharmacist or visit a sexual health clinic. So it’s not surprising that men are more likely to end up in hospital because they delay getting a health complaint checked out for so long. Also, some guys feel embarrassed talking about sex or even about being gay, so the idea of going to a sexual health clinic may not appeal to them. What would you say to those guys in particular? The important thing to remember is that, no matter what sexual health clinic you go to (a specialist gay men’s clinic or a general service), all your results are completely confidential and aren’t passed on to your GP. The sexual health advisors at these services are completely nonjudgmental and chances are they have heard it all before, so there is nothing you can say that would surprise or shock them. 9 out of 10 gay men said they would recommend the last GU clinic they visited to a friend. They said they felt like they were listened to and were treated with respect by staff. Why is it important to get screened regularly? First of all, the sooner you find out you have a sexually transmitted infection (including HIV) the easier it will be to treat it. If untreated, even simple infections can get very serious and you could end up with serious health complications. Secondly, many STIs don’t have any noticeable symptoms so you may not know you have one; not only could it develop into something very serious before you notice it, you could be passing it on to other guys without knowing it. What about HIV? When it comes to HIV, if someone with HIV has an STI they may be more likely to pass it on because the amount of HIV in their body will be higher. If you don’t have HIV but you have sex with someone who does, you could be more likely to catch it because STIs can make it easier for HIV to enter your bloodstream through the skin damage (for example through ulcers or inflamed skin) STIs cause. How regular is regular? The advice is, as well as using condoms for sex, you should visit a sexual health clinic at least every six months. If you are having lots of different sexual partners, however, then you’ll probably want to have a check-up even more often. And it goes without saying that if you start experiencing symptoms of an STI, get yourself to the clinic straight away – if you ring in advance and tell them you have symptoms, you’ll be seen faster – and don’t have sex until you’ve been checked out. ■ For more information on STIs and

how to protect yourself and your partners, visit www.chapsonline.org.uk/ infections.

HORSE MEAT SCREEN: GAY SEX IN THE 70S SUNDAY 22ND APRIL, DOORS FROM 7.30PM, FILM FROM 8PM

Films have played a distinct part in the story of Horse Meat Disco. With this in mind, the team has launched a season of films in the form of HORSE MEAT HM Screens SCREEN and this weekend it’s Gay Sex In The 70s – a look back to the vibrant era between Stonewall in the late 1960s and the onset of AIDs in the early 1980s. Eagle dabbled with a few film screenings last year and we’re thrilled to see them return on a regular basis – get yourselves down there and enjoy viewing a piece of gay history! ■ Entry is free before 8pm and includes entry to Horse Meat Disco afterwards too! ■ Horse Meat Screen is at Eagle, 349 Kennington Lane, Vauxhall, SE11.

Andrew St. Pierre as Mark Stein and Charlie Cussons as John Curlew

EVENT

Adapted and directed by: Glenn Chandler Based on the novel by: John Rae Produced by: Kim Sheard for Boys of the Empire Productions Dates: Until 12th May, Tues – Sat at 7.30pm, Sat also at 4pm

Director Glenn Chandler – he of Bafta-winning series Taggart – and his team have produced something wonderful here. The Custard Boys tells the story of five London schoolboys who are evacuated to a Norfolk seaside village. Whilst there, one of them, John Curlew [Charlie Cussons], meets Mark Stein [Andrew St. Pierre], a Jewish refugee, and the two form a romantic bond that splits the group and invites fear and prejudice. The play is incredibly well cast with most of the young actors effortlessly taking on two or more roles. Lines are witty and well delivered, humour sits side-by-side with scenes of sadness, and moments of awkward attraction are met with mature honesty. This is an endearing tale about love, war and grown-up stuff that we could watch again and again – a must see! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

WITH DR

ALAN McOWAN OUR BOYZ DOC IS DR ALAN McOWAN, THE LEAD CLINICIAN AT 56 DEAN STREET AND A SPECIALIST IN SEXUAL HEALTH AND HIV. Dear Alan Last year I had Gonorrhea. It put me off sex for quite a few months. I did eventually hook up with guy and it was fun, but then I noticed a discharge in my cock. This time the clinic couldn’t see anything from swabs under the microscope. They gave me drugs anyway and the discharge went after a few days. When I called for my results a week later I was told I they were clear. This left me very confused. Why did I have discharge coming from my cock? Thanks ADRIAN Dear Adrian, It sounds like you had Non Specific Urethritis (usually shortened to NSU). This is a medical term for inflammation of your urethra (urine pipe) that is not caused by either Gonorrhea or Chlamydia. If a man under 40 gets a discharge from his penis, it’s almost always one of these three things. To get the correct treatment, it’s important to get tested at a sexual health clinic. Lots of things may be the underlying cause of NSU, but usually it’s another bacterial infection. Think of it as a bit like a sore throat. You don’t have to have sex to get a sore throat. However, if your partner has a sore throat, you’re very likely to catch it from kissing him during sex. Lots of different bacteria may be the cause of NSU. Many of them can also live on a healthy penis without causing a problem. Because of this there’s not usually much point in trying to grow them on a culture plate in the laboratory unless things

fail to settle. NSU is diagnosed by taking a swab from your urethra and looking down the microscope. If there’s NSU present they should be able to see lots of inflammation cells. It’s important to hold your urine before the test as the cells get washed away every time you pee. To completely exclude NSU it’s best not to urinate for at least four hours before the tests are taken. My guess is that this is the reason they couldn’t see anything. They probably gave you an antibiotic that would cover both NSU and Chlamydia because of your symptoms (Gonorrhea treatment would have involved an injection). I’m really glad to hear things have settled down. Don’t let it put you off sex. You’re already doing the most important thing by using condoms for anal sex. If you’re switching partners it’s always worth getting a check up, as many easily treatable infections don’t cause symptoms if you have them in your throat or arse.

■ If you have any questions or worries about any aspect of sexual health or gay sex which you would like Dr Alan to answer please send an email to boyzdoc@boyz. co.uk. All emails are treated confidentially. We regret Dr Alan cannot answer emails personally. ■ THURSDAY 19TH APRIL 2012 BOYZ_doc_1077.indd 1

BODY GET FIT FAST! NUFF SAID APRIL MEANS IT’S NOT LONG UNTIL SUMMER’S HERE AND FITNESS DUDE ALEXANDER CHARLES IS CURRENTLY NUFFIELD HEALTH COVENT GARDEN’S INSTRUCTOR OF THE MONTH. IF YOU WANT A BEACH BOD WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK, READ ON. When are your Nuffield classes and who are they open to? Monday is Ultimate Tone from 1.15pm then on Tuesday it’s Bodypump from 12.30pm. Classes are free to all Nuffield gym members. What can we expect from each class? Ultimate Tone is a hardcore 45-minute body conditioning class. It’s a weights-based workout using the formula of medium weights combined with many repetitions, testing strength and endurance to get fast results to tone and strengthen your body. In my version this class you’ll complete over 1,000 exercise repetitions, giving you the workout you need to work towards the ultimate version of you! And Bodypump is a 45-minute barbell workout targeting all of the major muscle groups in the body to improve strength and muscle tone. Sounds good. OK, what do we need to bring? Just bring yourself and you gym kit. Oh, and with determination and a positive can-do attitude you are guaranteed results in no time! And what improvements physically will we notice? You can definitely expect to see a more toned and leaner, stronger you. And obviously the more classes you take part in the quicker and more noticeable results will be. ■ Nuffield Health, 11 Endell Street, Covent Garden, WC2. ■ www.nuffieldhealth.com/ gyms/CoventGarden

STARS BY HEAVENLY

BODY

ARIES

Ambition is a big force in the life of every Aries fella. But with Pluto in retrograde it’s time to admit that success doesn’t mean much if you end up alone in a big house with just your right hand and soft fruit for company. This week spend time with your loved ones and forget your career for once. TOP TIP: Forget work. Passion Rating: eeeee

TAURUS

Pluto in your sign means now is the time to study in life. However, all you seem to study these days are online pictures of buttholes. That’s fair enough, but how about learning an instrument or a language? If anything it’ll help you pick up guys so you can see some real hoop for once. TOP TIP: Learn something, luvvie. Passion Rating: eeeee

GEMINI

It’s not easy being a terrible twin. One moment you’re a real charmer, the next you’re a snarky diva. This week your possessive

060 stars_2H.indd 1

side will be emerging and anyone who eyes up your man will end up with the bitch slap of the decade. Just remember that you don’t own the man in your life. TOP TIP: Don’t be so jel. Passion Rating: eeeee

CANCER

Plenty of men have tried to care for you, but loving a Cancerian is a tough job, thanks to you being such a defensive little tart. However, Pluto is in retrograde until September, which gives you the perfect opportunity to soften up and let lads in…in your heart, that is. We know you don’t have a problem letting them into your pants. TOP TIP: Let lads in. Passion Rating: eeeee

LEO

It’s time to embrace your power in public. No, we don’t mean getting your knob out in Trafalgar Square for a dare again. We mean accepting what you’re good at and enjoying it. Whatever your talent is, not utilising it isn’t improving anyone’s life, especially yours. TOP TIP: Use your talent. Passion Rating: eeeee

VIRGO

You have a reputation for being the most prissy of the signs, but this week a man could bring out the bold side of you thanks to Pluto’s presence. Just be careful not to scare him off by asking him to squat

on your face before you even say hello. We both know that strategy didn’t work for you last time. TOP TIP: Only fools rush in. Passion Rating: eeeee

LIBRA

In life you get what you give… and we’re not just talking about 69ers. If you’re suspicious of your man’s whereabouts, he’ll soon start to wonder whether you’ve got something to hide. This week Mars’ movements give you the chance to stay strong, so don’t give into your insecurities. TOP TIP: Stay strong. Passion Rating: eeeee

SCORPIO

Now is the perfect time for teamwork. You’re such a slag, Scorps, you’ve probably already stopped reading and are now planning an orgy. However, if you haven’t, we suggest putting your teamwork skills into work instead. If you do, spring could see you achieving huge amounts or even establishing a new career altogether. TOP TIP: Work it. Passion Rating: eeeee

SAGITTARIUS

Mars will be making your life so fast-paced this week that you may end up puking on your moobs from excitement. Love, work and your social life will all be moving to thrilling places very soon. If we were you, we’d put five pairs of clean

knicks in your bag because you probably won’t be seeing much of home for a little while. TOP TIP: Get ready for action. Passion Rating: eeeee

CAPRICORN

This week you’re feeling so unmotivated you will doubt whether you can be bothered to get out of bed to go to the loo. So whilst you’re shitting the bed we reckon you should make a list of things you really want to do, see and achieve. With any luck it will stir you out of your slobby slumber. TOP TIP: Remember your dreams. Passion Rating: eeeee

AQUARIUS

It’s easy to sit and slag people off. After all, most people are tossers. However, instead of cussing about people’s love handles this week, you might discover something about yourself, like the fact you only do yoga so you can bend over in public. TOP TIP: Stop bitching. Passion Rating: eeeee

PISCES

Lately your love life has been as dry as a nun’s, but this week Mars means your mojo will be back with a vengeance, so make sure you stock up on lube and prepare to wear your nubbin down to nothing. Yes, Pisces is back with a bang. TOP TIP: Get shagging. Passion Rating: eeeee
