It is with great pleasure that we bring you the 2014 Spring/Summer Program Guide. We take our community’s quality of life seriously and we think it shows inside the pages of this guide. Our great community has been growing so fast that it has necessitated the addition and creation of many new programs and expanded facilities over the past few years. These new programs, along with our timeless classics, add to the richness of living in and visiting Bozeman. So this year we focus special attention on providing the highest quality programs and facilities that a town can offer. The newer most popular and successful programs will see natural extensions and the traditional classics receive a renewed focus and enthusiasm. We love being a part of what makes Bozeman such a special place to live, learn, work, grow, and play; and we’re sure you do too.

The Recreation and Parks Advisory Board makes recommendations regarding parks and recreation policies. Input from the community is encouraged and welcomed. Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at the Lindley Center (1102 E. Curtiss).

Waiting Lists If you are unable to register for a program due to full enrollment, you may request to have your name placed on a waiting list; no fee will be charged.

There is no guarantee of placement in the class. If we have cancellations or are able to open additional classes, you will be notified by phone prior to the first class.

Scholarships The City of Bozeman Parks and Recreation Department programs are supported by user fees paid by participants. Scholarships are available on a first come first served basis for City of Bozeman residents only. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship please call 582-2290.

Access to All We welcome all individuals and families to participate and enjoy our programs and facilities regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability. The Swim Center and Bogert Pool have lifts and steps, making swimming accessible to all. If you would like additional assistance, please call 582-2910.

Cancellation Policy Fees are charged to offset the cost of our programs. If you need to cancel from a class, notify the Recreation Division at least 10 days before the first class to receive a credit that can be used toward other classes. Credit will not be given if you cancel out of a class less than 10 days before it begins. Refunds for cancellations will not be issued. Credit will not be given for absences or for no-shows.

A full refund will be issued if the Parks and Recreation Department must cancel the class due to low enrollment.

Weather Cancellations If inclement weather forces program cancellations, participants should call the Parks and Recreation Department at 582-2910 or visit our Facebook page to check on the status. If weather conditions are questionable, report to the program site. Once at a program site, decisions concerning the cancellation or discontinuation of the activity will be the judgment of the Recreation Leaders or Lifeguards. Every attempt will be made to have the class.

FEE: $40 City of Bozeman Resident/$56 Non-City Resident PRACTICES: Start the beginning of May. GAMES: Will be held May 12- June 13 Youth will learn the fundamental skills of throwing, catching, hitting a ball off of a tee, and running. There will be three co-ed leagues; one for 3-4 year olds, one for 4-5 year olds, and one for 6,7 & 8 year olds. The focus is FUN! Teams will be divided by school or zone for those not yet in school.

Teams will be divided by zone. In order to be placed on a team in your zone you must be registered by April 11.

SUMMER ACTIVITY ROUND-UP

EASTER EGG HUNT - Ages 1-12

Visit with program providers to find out about the great variety of activities available for youth this summer. Most groups will be taking sign-ups and all groups will have their program details available. Kids activities will also be included this year!

NOTE: This camp is $45 for City of Bozeman residents and $65 for non-city and you don’t need a lunch for this camp.

No School? Do something cool! Our camps are back by popular demand and the focus is on adventure! Calling all artists! This class will provide the perfect opportunity for creative expression for little hands. A variety of different media will be introduced from clay to edible paint. Let’s see what we can build and create with our recycling. Reuse recyclable materials to craft boats, buildings, bridges, airplanes, and your very own green inventions. We will build a solar heated oven and learn about environmentally friendly buildings.

Musikgraden - Clap with Me

Together you will sing, chant, move, dance, listen and play simple instruments. All activities that bridge the natural connection between music and movement. Each week will feature movement activities for coordination, body awareness and control exploration of space, and instruments such as rhythm sticks, jingles, rattles, drums, and resonator bars. Soccer-Get Your Kicks

Dribble, pass and shoot! We will run and play fun games with a soccer ball as we introduce preschoolers to basic soccer skills. Soccer balls of all sizes will be used to score goals in this class!

Superhero Me

Calling all Bozeman superheroes! We will be throwing webs like Spiderman and building muscles a nd gaining superhero powers like Wonder Women and Superman! This class will be full of superhero wisdom and entertainment.

T-Ball-Little Sluggers

Calling all sluggers to the plate! Preschoolers will learn the fundamental skills of throwing, catching, hitting a ball off the tee and running the bases. This class incorporates obstacle courses, t-ball basics and art all into one great age appropriate class.

Tykes on Bikes

Bring your balance bikes, trikes and small scooters for this class on wheels. We will decorate our bikes, ride our bikes, have a bike parade and go through an obstacle course. And of course, balls, parachutes and art projects get thrown into the mix too. NO BRAKE BIKES PLEASE!

Did you know that juggling can improve your hand-eye coordination, relieve stress, increase focus, and help with problem solving? Juggling is a fun way to exercise your body and your mind and anyone can do it! This class will provide an introduction to juggling and will progress each week. This is one you don’t want to miss!

Sand Volleyball

Serve, set and spike! Learn the basic skills of sand volleyball in a fun, safe and positive outdoor environment. Sand volleyball builds self-esteem and confidence, strengthens teamwork, encourage good sportsmanship, and promotes physical activity. What a great combination!

10 Million Kids Outdoors Initiative The National Wildlife Federation in partnership with the National Parks and Recreation Association have set a three-year goal to GET 10 MILLION KIDS OUTDOORS and back to nature.

The overall goal is to get kids outdoors,

playing, learning and connecting to nature for 90 minutes more per week than they are now. This time may be spent in a single block or for an incremental number of minutes per day or week.

The Bozeman Parks and Recreation

Whether you’re just getting started or need to brush up on a few skills, our Fly Fishing for Women class is a fun, place to do it! Learn how to get in and out of your boat, as well as the different strokes used, and how to wet exit. A great class for beginners or anyone who is interested in honing their skills in a safe, non-threatening environment.

Our adult co-ed kickball league is a great way to have fun in the summer evenings.

Kickball is a total blast and anyone can play it! Grab your co-workers and friends and get registered today. Register as a team (12-18 members) or individually. You must be 21 years or older to play in this league.

Registration deadline is June 6 at 4:00pm.

Games will be held in Beall Park June 23 -August 13, on Monday and Wednesday evenings (depending on number of teams) and end with a single elimination tournament on August 16.

Intro to Archery for Families NEW

Archery is an ideal sport for families as it provides opportunities for achievement, camaraderie, and is fun for all ages! Sports and Fitness Balance and Beyond

Balance is the ability to maintain the position of one’s body over a base of support whether the base is stationary or moving.

Learn techniques that increase functional ability while maintaining control through drills and skills. This class focuses on building strength and stability in the upper and lower body as well as the core (trunk). Be prepared to stand for most of this program, using a chair for support, if preferred.

Heart and Sole

A chairobic program designed for mature adults (55+) who cannot or choose not to participate in traditional aerobic exercise options. It is a lively seated workout (standing is optional) performed to music inclusive of a 5 minute warm up, 20-25 minute aerobic component, 5 minute cool down, 15 minute strength segment and a 5 minute stretch/ flexibility routine. Pickleball NEW

Pickleball is happening in Bozeman! We have joined forces with area enthusiasts to bring you Pickleball, an exciting game that’s a cross between tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It’s one of the country’s fastest-growing sports and a game the entire family can play together.

According to the USA Pickleball Association, the sport has over 100,000 participants nationwide and it has become extremely popular in retirement communities across the U.S. Join us for active, fun, and social open play sessions for all ability levels! Players will enjoy the opportunity to learn the sport or work on their game with a variety of other players.

We will provide the nets, paddles, and balls or bring your own if you have them.

Pace Setters Pole Walking for Fitness

Fitness Walking focuses on power walking, which increases the heart rate, tones the upper and lower body, activates the immune system, develops good posture, strengthens core muscles to improve balance and challenges coordination while stimulating the brain, is moderate to fast, and anyone can do it! Please bring your own walking poles if you have them. A limited number of poles will be available for class use.

Pole Walking for Stability & Mobility

The Stability and Mobility method of pole walking establishes stability, helps improve posture, and provide increased range of

motion through seated and standing exercises that utilize poles. The focus is on building core strength to increase balance. The length of time spent walking is gradually lengthened as skills increase. The pole walking techniques vary from the Walking for Fitness program.

Stability and Mobility better accommodates persons with balance and mobility challenges.

Water Fitness

Water Fitness classes are offered multiple times a week on a drop-in basis at the Bozeman Swim Center. Classes are focused on cardiovascular workout which uses the resistance of water to increase endurance and core strength, as well as to improve flexibility and range of motion. Classes include warm-up, cardiovascular and strength training, muscle toning, and stretching. Participants do not need to know how to swim and can mix and match classes.

Join us for an hour on our bikes. The Recreation Department will build a mini bike course, setting up a space for bike decorating and using our wheels for making art. Do you love to ride bikes with your friends? Bring them too! Push bikes, balance bikes, and scooters, and tricycles allowed. No brake bikes please.

Bobcat Football Stadium 7th & Kagy 11:00am - 12:00pm Do you have a future Bobcat in your family? This is his/her chance to tour the Montana State University football stadium and field. Get to know how it feels to play on a big football field, see what the stadium looks like from all angles (inside and out), and see where the Bobcat football players huddle up for halftime to receive playing strategies from Coach Ash. Dress in athletic clothes (Bobcat spirit is always encouraged) and prepare to toss a football back and forth with a Bobcat football player.

Budding artists will explore clay, decoupage, large mixed media sculptures, and textile art. Children will be introduced to a variety of different art media and encouraged to express themselves. Wear clothes that can get messy and shoes to run around in.

Growing stuff for growing kids! We will get down in the dirt to learn about flower and vegetable gardening. We will make crafts inspired by nature and participate in activities. If you like to play in the dirt, this class is for you!

Serve, Set and Spike! The focus of this class will be to learn the basic skills of sand volleyball in a fun, safe, and positive outdoor environment. Youth will be learning the fundamentals of sand volleyball while keeping the game fun and entertaining for all the players. Sand volleyball builds selfesteem and confidence, strengthens teamwork, encourages good sportsmanship, and promotes physical activity. What a great combination! Join us for a week full of volleyball action.

Age 6-12 Pre-race clinic Saturday, July 12 • 8:30am Race Begins Saturday, July 12 • 9:00am The children’s triathlon clinic will be led by Matthew Parks with Moving Forward, a certified triathlon coach and will review the racecourse, transition set up and gear review.

Safety precautions will also be covered, including stopping while on the bike along with riding with others in a group setting. On race day, please make sure that your child has the necessary equipment for the clinic and race. Suggested list: 1. swimsuit

Bogert pool has two unique swimming areas: a larger 25 yard pool and a shallow pool. The shallow pool, with depths from 1 to 3 feet, is ideal for young children. The shallow pool is also home to “Delaware the Duck”, a slide designed for small children. The south deck offers additional space for sunning.

Bogert Pool will close during lightning and thunderstorms. Please be prepared to pick up your children if this occurs. MT Health Code now requires all swimmers 13 years old and younger to be accompanied by an adult 18 years old or older. Bogert pool capacity is 350.

Weather Closure Policy During the day Bogert Pool will close as needed for lightning, thunder and cold weather.

1) Lifeguard must call everyone out of the pool when thunder is heard (MT Health Code) 2) Swimmers will be escorted to the locker rooms or lobby.

3) Swimmers may return to the water when staff determines it is safe.

4) If Bogert is closed due to weather, it will be reevaluated at 3p.m. to determine if the pool can be re-opened. If the storm is still threatening or the temperature is below 50 degrees the pool will remain closed for the day. The Swim Center is open except on weekends.

5) Patrons who have paid to swim at Bogert may have their hand stamped, allowing them to swim for free at the Swim Center the rest of that day.

6) Refunds and swim passes will not be issued for weather related closures.

Bogert Pool Summer Swimming Lessons B ogert P ool has offered quality lessons for 7 2 years !

Parent/Tot Lessons For youth ages 6 months through 2 years and a parent or two. Have fun learning how to prepare your child for a lifetime of swimming. Parents will be in the water with their child playing fun games and learning proper hold techniques: (MT Health Code approved swim diaper required).

Pre-School Lessons For children ages 3 through 4 who can be in a class without needing their parent in the water. (MT Health Code approved swim diaper required).

Youth Lessons For ages 5 and up: Classes are divided by ability. Please read the following to determine the best level of class for your

swimmer; swimmers must be able to complete certification requirements to move to next level.

Certification Requirements Level 1 1. Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps, or side, travel at least 5 yards, bob 3 times, then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or “swim.”)

2. Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 3 seconds, and recover to a vertical position. (This part of the assessment can be performed with support.)

Level 2 1. Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds,

roll to back, float for 5 seconds, then return to a vertical position.

2. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position.

3. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. (You can assist the participant when taking a breath.)

Level 3 Jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds; and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.

This is a chance to learn responsibility, develop leadership skills, and volunteer to assist younger kids. Youth have an opportunity for their first work experience through this program. Jr. Leaders will begin each day at 10:00 a.m. with instruction in Basic Water Safety, advanced swimming skills, and teaching techniques. This is followed by two hours of working with the kids in lessons. Jr. Leaders must be able to swim one width of the pool using front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and sidestroke.

The Swim Center is a 50-meter, eight lane, indoor aquatic facility. The crystal-clear water is kept at 82°F. Our spacious pool is equipped with lifejackets, recreation toys, water fitness equipment, and lap swimming equipment. The fitness corner includes a weight machine, exercise bikes and a stair stepper. The pool and locker rooms are well lit and clean. Trained and highly skilled lifeguards enforce facility rules in a friendly and fair manner.

The pool is equipped with an Automated External Defibrillator. MT Health Code does not allow food in the facility.

MT Health Code now requires all swimmers 13 years old and younger to be accompanied by an adult 18 years old or older.

Professional Classes American Red Cross Lifeguard Courses Purpose

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Prerequisites

1. Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.

2. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.

Swim goggles may be used.

3. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.

Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

4. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

• Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.

• Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.

Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Swim Center Programs Water Fitness Classes The water allows you to work all muscle groups to a full range of motion in a safe manner. Classes will emphasize posture, balance, strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Certified instructors encourage friendships and fun while getting a great workout. Your first class is free of charge. Call 582-2910 if you have any questions.

Open Boating (January 13th-May 12th) Bring your Kayaks and Canoes into the pool. Practice your skills in the pool before you head out on the lakes and rivers. Open boating meets Sunday nights from 4:00pm – 5:00pm. at the Swim Center. Boaters must wash their boats off before entering the pool - a hose is provided on the pool deck. Cost is $4.00 for adult and $3.00 for youth. (No swimming is allowed at this time)

Lap hours are length-wise (50 meters) or width-wise (20 yards) depending on the time and day. Check the schedule to plan your perfect swim.

Water Safety Instructor Course Instructor Course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

Prerequisites

To participate in the Water Safety Instructor course, individuals must— • Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course.

• Have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course.

• Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills: 1. Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, • Front crawl—25 yards • Back crawl—25 yards • Breaststroke—25 yards • Elementary backstroke—25 yards • Sidestroke—25 yards • Butterfly—15 yards 2. Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).

3. Tread water for 1 minute.

Fee: $200.00 City of Bozeman resident

Breakfast Optimist Club Fishing Derby June 7, 2014

The Breakfast Optimist Club of Bozeman is sponsoring a free youth fishing derby on Saturday, June 7 at the Bozeman Ponds for all ages up through age 13. Registration begins at 7:30am and continues throughout the morning. Fishing begins at 8:00am and ends at 11:00am. Prizes will be awarded in five age groups. The Lindley Center is available to rent for weddings, meetings, dinners, receptions and other special occasions. During the summer the facility is available Monday – Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Building capacity is 150.

Certain park pavilions and the Bogert Bandshell can be reserved 6 months in advance for specific dates and times. Alcohol Waivers are required to have alcohol in a city park and are only available with a reservation; the applicant must be 21 years of age or older. For groups of 75 people or more a Public Assembly Permit is required and it is possible other information may be required depending on the type of event. For more information or to make a reservation please call 582-3203.

The Beall Park Recreation Center was built in 1927 and was donated to the city “for the purpose of a Recreation Center, where young and old of Gallatin Valley may gather and enjoy themselves and indulge in wholesome recreation.”

The center is available for rent on Monday – Friday from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. the building capacity is 90.
