C.M. Russell Museum The museum complex also holds the original Charles M. Russell Home, Russell’s Log Cabin Studio, Sculpture Garden, and Museum Store. The Russell Home was built in 1900, and is furnished with period pieces as well as items from the Russell family, and has been beautifully preserved for the enjoyment of museum visitors. Russell’s Log Cabin Studio was built in 1903 and is adjacent to his home. Made of western red cedar telephone poles, the studio is filled with authentic cowboy gear and Indian artifacts that Russell collected and used as he painted or sculpted. The sculpture garden opened in 2012 with four major bronze pieces on the museum grounds. The Museum Store features museum-quality gifts and collectibles, high-quality furniture, home décor, and jewelry, and boasts a large selection of reproduction Russell paintings.

The C.M. Russell Museum holds thousands of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and illustrations that Charles M. Russell (1864–1926) created from childhood through the end of his life. Displayed in a suite of five galleries, the works are arranged to show how the artist evolved, as well as to celebrate the culture of the American West. Charlie’s subjects were based on Western history and his own experience, including cowboys, Plains Indians, and wildlife. Through his art, we learn about his life, first as a newcomer to Montana from St. Louis working with cattle outfits, to his decision to become a professional artist when he created such masterpieces as The Exalted Ruler,The Jerkline, and The Fireboat. Memorabilia from the Russell family completes this one-of-a-kind collection.

The Bison: American Icon, Heart of Plains Indian Culture Culture is the C.M. Russell Museum’s newest permanent exhibition. The Bison features over 1,000 objects, including Northern Plains Indian artifacts such as clothing, regalia, tools, and weapons, a wide variety of objects crafted from bison, and works of art highlighting Northern Plains Indian culture.

of Russell oil paintings, watercolors, bronzes, clay models, illustrated letters, pen-and-ink drawings, and published illustrations has been reinstalled to showcase the astonishing depth and range of America’s favorite cowboy artist. Although it is not possible to display all 700 works in the Russell collection at one time, the art currently on view nonetheless demonstrates the remarkable artistic evolution of a largely self-taught genius. Arranged in roughly chronological order, the exhibition begins with the primitive paintings and drawings of Russell’s boyhood and ends with the masterpieces he produced near the end of his life.

Art Glass Creations by David Fjeld
ART 2014
David Fjeld’s work includes everything from religious subjects to wolves, trout, wheat and mountains. His stained glass can create the illusion of 3D depth or a textured appearance, and he is equally adept at modern or contemporary styles. Fjeld’s work appears in numerous public locations such as churches and convents, hospitals and hotels, local bars as well as some of the most luxurious private residences in the world. “We do a lot of designs that are hard to describe. We do metal work within the glass, bend glass, and use a lot of clear glass that sparkles with the light. We do the traditional work of course, but I try to move it beyond what people normally think of.” As a result of David Fjeld’s innovative style, he has won shows and had his work appear in the Stained Glass Association of America’s calendar.

Established in 1974 as a community non-profit (501c3) under the umbrella of the Park County Friends of the Arts (PCFA), the Danforth Gallery has played an active role for nearly 40 years in establishing Livingston as a center for art in Montana. The Danforth Gallery/ PCFA is one of the oldest art non-profits in Montana and Livingston’s first art gallery. The organization is the original founder of the now bustling Livingston Art Walk. The Danforth Gallery/PCFA mission is to nurture the creation and awareness of art in our community by providing exhibition opportunities for emerging, or underrecognized contemporary artists; and to offer innovative community programs, so that our citizens may realize the importance of art in their lives.

and welcomed the community time and again through its doors to gather, share and revel in the arts and culture. Most of all, the Emerson is about people coming together: Children laugh and play at Lunch on the Lawn; artisttenants open their studios on Art Walk evenings; music or movie lovers take their seats in the Crawford Theater; tiny people twirl in a second-floor dance studio; schoolchildren sit on the floor in the Jessie Wilber Gallery intent on an art project; shoppers cruise Galleria Hall and pause for a meal at the Emerson Grill; students work wheels in the pottery studio; and in a prelude to Bozeman’s Christmas Stroll, a pandemonium of excited children assemble gingerbread houses. The old Emerson School building may be on the National Register of Historic Places, but what is truly historic is the vitality that continues to emanate within its walls.
