Chamber Fall Festival CREW
Dear Belgrade Community,
After a four-year hiatus, I am thrilled to be back with the Chamber and more involved full-time. I love being so engaged with our members and events— it feels a lot like riding a bike… The transition has been smooth, and I’m so happy to be back in the swing of things. Event planning is something I’m passionate about, and being a part of the Fall Festival this year has been an absolute blast. Is it stressful? Absolutely. But with the amazing crew we have on our board, the dedicated volunteers making up our Fall Festival Committee, supportive sponsors, and everyone in between, it’s been an incredible rush.
I’ve called Belgrade home since 2004, and it’s been amazing to see how our community has grown over the years. Even with this rapid growth, one thing has remained constant: the strong sense of community that makes Belgrade feel like a small town, no matter how big we get. That’s one of the reasons I’ve always loved the Fall Festival—it brings everyone together, and you get to see faces you haven’t seen in a while. Families come together, neighbors catch up, and for a day, it feels like time slows down. It’s that feeling of connection that makes our town so special.
My two older kids graduated from Belgrade and were active
in softball, tennis, basketball, and volleyball; and my youngest is now making her way through the middle school. I have had the privilege of being a team mom for a combined eight years, and I loved every minute of it. Homecoming was always a big deal in our house—spirit week dress-up days, homecoming royalty, sports games, Friday night lights, the parade, the whole works. Our family “bleeds green”, and we’re so proud to be part of this community. That’s why I’m so excited that the Fall Festival aligns with Panther Homecoming this year again. It’s the perfect way to showcase our community pride and school spirit.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Fall Festival committee. From the early planning stages to our monthly meetings and everything in between, you’ve shown up with enthusiasm and commitment to make this event happen. So much of the Fall Festival is driven by volunteers, and it simply couldn’t happen without you. We were hopeful to bring the event back to Lewis and Clark Park, but this year it will be spread out from the Belgrade Senior Center to Lion’s Park baseball fields, with a new location for our car show in the baseball parking lot—no barrow pits this year (yay)! This area gives us plenty of room to work with, and with the City of
Belgrade Senior Center hosting both the pancake breakfast and the free community lunch, it just made sense to center the festivities around it. The parade runs right into it, so everything works together perfectly.
We are incredibly grateful to the sponsors who have stepped up this year. Volunteers and sponsors are the heart of the Fall Festival, and we have an abundance of both this year. So, dust off your Panther gear, come out, and celebrate
Homecoming with us! No matter how much we grow, we’ll always have that small-town feel. Come see us and say hello at the Chamber booth during the festival(and pick up your own copy of the inaugural poster!)
GO PANTHERS!

BELGRADE TRADITION
going strong in 2024
BY SEAN BATURA BELGRADE NEWS
As last month’s Manhattan Potato Festival has roots in the farming and sale of spuds, the Belgrade Fall Festival next week grew out of wheat. Beginning in the 1860s, farmers would sell their grain in Belgrade, which was once the largest grain-shipping station on the Northern Pacific line. The residents eventually held an event to coincide with the farmers coming to town and to celebrate the harvest.
The Belgrade Commercial Club held the first Fall Festival in the 1950s and included a free barbecue dinner made possible by donations of food and funds. The first event was started by club members Arnold Tholkas, Al Newby, and Bill Allen.
The festival evolved from dances and potluck dinners to an event that includes a barbecue, parade, homecoming game, car show, 5K, and other activities. The Fall Festival raffle, which benefits charitable groups, was born in 1977, when the club changed its name to the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce.
Festival organizers eventually adopted themes for each year.
In 2004, the theme was “Family and Friends for Freedom” to honor people who had loved ones in the military who were deployed to support Operation
Iraqi Freedom. In 2007, the theme was “Belgrade...Worth Coming Home To!” In 2009, it was “Today’s Readers, Tomorrow’s Leaders!” as a way to encourage literacy, and that year, the Belgrade Community Library was the beneficiary of the raffle. The theme in 2014 was, “Home is where the heart is… And my heart is in Belgrade,” and the following year it was “The Best Is Yet To Come.”
This year, the theme is Panther Pride, school spirit, and focuses on Homecoming Week.
“This Fall Festival is dedicated to celebrating every aspect of our wonderful school and town,” reads a statement from the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce. “We are excited to see the entire community come together to support our local kids and our beloved Belgreat town!”
In that spirit, this year’s raffle beneficiary will be the Belgrade Booster Club. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five tickets for $20 and can be purchased at https:// tinyurl.com/3w598wn3.
“Our entire community has come together to ensure that the tradition of Fall Festival continues to grow and thrive,” reads the chamber’s statement. “We want each Panther student to feel honored and recognized — whether they are athletes, in speech and debate, drama, orchestra, band, choir, or even
those who aren’t in an organized group. From our littlest kindergartners to our graduating seniors, and our amazing alumni planning their class reunions, we are here to support and cheer for you all.”
In years past, Belgrade Fall Festival has drawn thousands of people to town, and its accompanying parade has included more than 85 entries. A new tradition this year is the Belgrade King and Queen. It’s a chance for locals to honor two people who help make
Belgrade a fantastic place to live. Nominees must live in the Belgrade School District. To nominate someone, scan the QR code at https://tinyurl. com/3cvmb34s.

BEHIND THE 2024 BELGRADE FALL FESTIVAL POSTER
ELLIE AYERS
BY ERIN HOPPE
Iapproached Ellie about 2-3 months ago playing around with the poster idea- we then had a phone conference between myself Megan and Ellie and we threw so many ideas at her. Words like whimsical, fun but classic were thrown around in the conversations; panthers, colors, and maybe some fall colors things we liked and didn’t like, element ideas from trains to planes to the panther logo to panther paws- and other structures that when you see them you know you are in Belgrade….the works. You name it we threw it at her. Lol!
watch our ideas come to life has been inspiring. I have zero art talent, so it is fascinating to me. I couldn’t be prouder to hang this poster! ~Erin
Hailing from Polson, MT, right at the southern tip of Flathead Lake, Ellie Ayers has considered herself an artist her entire life. Recently earning her Bachelor of Fine Art in Graphic Design from Montana State University, Ellie’s journey into the world of art has been shaped by her deep connection to Montana’s natural beauty and her passion for creative expression.
Being able to see her mockups and watch the creative process was so interesting. Getting feedback from us, making changes, updates and putting her creative spin on it all. We feel spoiled being able to have this amazing person working with us on this project. She has agreed to help us with the art contest concept as well going forward. (We will open this up early spring next year for another artist to emerge with the 2nd year poster, awards will be given... This will be an annual contest going forward.)
I am so happy that Ellie gets to be a part of this first year- she is an incredible person inside and out and being able to see how her creative mind works and
Growing up with an outdoorsy lifestyle, Ellie learned to appreciate the visual beauty that surrounded her. Despite her love for the outdoors, she always felt a pull towards creating and drawing, finding ways to incorporate art into every aspect of her life. Though her academic journey started in Computer Science and briefly ventured into Criminology, it was Graphic Design that ultimately captured her heart. With this field, Ellie discovered a way to combine her love of creating from scratch with a viable career path, and she’s never looked back.
Ellie’s artistic style has evolved over the years, from copying cartoon characters as a child to doodling in class, to her current fluid approach that ranges
from edgy designs to bubbly and friendly creations. Her inspiration has always been fueled by the art she encountered in museums during family travels, where her love for art and its history was nurtured.
Now, Ellie is thrilled to have had the opportunity to create the visuals for the 2024 Belgrade Fall Festival. She is passionate about capturing the essence of a community and translating those ideas into visuals that truly represent the
people. Ellie feels immensely grateful for the support she has received from the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce and the local community, acknowledging that community support is vital for an artist to kickstart their career and bring their dreams to life.
For those who want to follow Ellie’s journey or inquire about her work, you can find her on Instagram @eayersart or visit her website at www.ellieayers.art.

PLANNING
INFUSED WITH COMMUNITY, VOLUNTEER SPIRIT
BY SEAN BATURA BELGRADE NEWS
Organizing a free festival in Belgrade that draws thousands of attendees isn’t easy and requires the cooperation of many people in the spirit of the community event itself.
Handling an influx of visitors for the annual Belgrade Fall Festival warrants quite a bit of planning, and at the forefront of that is Megan Elliott, executive director of the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is holding the festival in partnership with the city and with the Belgrade Community Coalition.
“There’s a ton that goes into it logistically — permits, that kind of thing,” Elliott said. “There are so many different facets to it — everything from trying to help promote the high school sporting event to trying to make sure it’s on weekends that there isn’t a conflicting event.”
A festival planning committee of 16 people has been holding meetings since April, she said. Committee members include local government staff and people representing local businesses — “all sorts of entities,” said Elliott. The committee also includes herself and the chamber’s director of membership and events, Erin Hoppe.
In the midst of a contentious election season and a difficult time in the country, it’s events like the festival that are especially needed to draw people together in a healthy way, she agreed.
“As a chamber, we’re truly just looking to get people together; we are looking to get businesses’ names out and really look for the growth and promotion of Belgrade,” Elliott said.
In planning the festival, Elliott has been struck by the willingness of organizers to volunteer their time “in a very unselfish way.” People “just to be a part of it,” she said.
“It’s very incredible, and I think speaks a lot to our community and to how we’re kind of weathering the growing pains of the community,” Elliott said.
It’s Elliott’s first year helping to plan the festival. She grew up in central Montana and has lived in Belgrade for about eight years.
This year, the festival got some monetary assistance from the state — a $15,000 grant from the Montana Department of Commerce. The dollars are being used for things such as rental costs and marketing, Elliott said. Organizers hope the festival will attract people from throughout the state.
“We do have vendors coming from as far as Whitefish and Fort Benton,” Elliott said.
The festival is getting a lot of help from the city itself. For example, the city will host the traditional Fall Festival lunch.
“City employees, under the guidance of our experienced Senior Center kitchen staff, will be serving pulled pork sandwiches,” wrote Dana Jambor, executive assistant to the city manager, in an email. “To ensure a smooth and safe event, the team has completed Gallatin Health Department Food Handler’s training, which covered key areas such as hygiene and safe food handling. The City’s participation not only supports the festival but also allows staff to directly engage in one of Belgrade’s favorite traditions, ensuring everyone enjoys a safe and successful event.”
Another person at the forefront of festival planning is Capt. Justin Sharp, who represents the Belgrade Police Department in those efforts. He’s been attending pre-festival meetings with other stakeholders.
“My main goal during these meetings is to review the event plans with an emphasis on the safety of eventgoers as well as any effects the event will have on the safety of the public in general,” Sharp told Belgrade News. “Outside of these meetings, my attention is focused on coordinating with City of Belgrade Public Works to arrange traffic control plans and make arrangements for the 14 police officers that will
be assigned directly to the parade and festival on the day of the event.”
Sharp is especially helpful in planning the event given that he’s been involved in the fall festival in one capacity or another for the past 18 years.
“The fall festival is one of those events every year that brings the community together to celebrate and show pride in our town,” Sharp wrote in an email. “This event is part of the culture of the City of Belgrade and helps to keep that hometown feel despite our seemingly exponential population growth.”
Sharp advised festival attendees to arrive early to avoid too much trouble parking and finding a good parade viewing spot.
“There are so many people that come into town for this event that parking can be extremely difficult, and the road for the parade route will be closed before the start of the parade,” Sharp wrote. “The biggest thing that the public can do to help is to plan ahead and get to your viewing space early. Once the roads are shut down, there is not much we can do to help you get where you need to go.”
He also asked people to honor road closure signs and barricades, and to have patience with officers and volunteers that are controlling intersections and working the event.
“And stop by to say hi to our officers in and around the event, we always enjoy getting to interact with our community,” Sharp wrote.
Something on the scale of Belgrade Fall Festival could hardly happen without the assistance of the city’s public works department.
Camaree Uljua, director of Belgrade Public Works, spoke of the significant coordination with all of the stakeholders involved, including various city departments.
“One of the primary focuses for Public Works is ensuring we have a solid traffic control plan
in place for any street closures and the parade route,” Uljua wrote in an email. “We coordinate closely with the Belgrade Police Department on this. Public Works is also placing focus on City-wide cleanup efforts ahead of Fall Festival. That work mostly focuses on street sweeping and mowing and weed eating public rights-of-way and other public spaces.”
It’s Uljua’s first year being in being involved in preparing for the Fall Festival.
“It has been very eye opening to see all the work that goes into it,” she wrote.
Uljua echoed Sharp’s advice about attendees making advance plans and heeding traffic control measures.
“During the parade, getting across town can be difficult as roads are temporarily closed,” Uljua wrote. “Timing your travel or finding an alternate route around the parade can prevent frustration and keep everyone on the road safe.” Uljuia said there are still opportunities available for people to volunteer to help make the festival a great experience for everyone.
“The Belgrade Chamber of Commerce is always looking for volunteers that want to help with various aspects of the Fall Festival!” she said.
The chamber can be reached at 406-388-1616 or visited at 10 E. Main St.
“It has been exciting to see all the behind the scenes work that is involved in preparing for the Fall Festival,” Uljua wrote. “Previously, I had only seen the festival as a Belgrade resident attending and took for granted all the efforts that everyone puts into it. As a community member and now City employee, I am excited to see the Fall Festival grow and the City’s role in it expanding. Many of our Public Works staff live in Belgrade and the surrounding area. This is a change of pace from their normal work, and they take a great amount of pride in their involvement.”

Igrew up in a family of six kids, 4 brothers and a sister. My Dad, due to the economics of raising six kids, had to become a self-taught mechanic keeping all the family vehicles running. He also loved cars. I was usually the one out of all of us, that was out in the garage, helping dad fix and work on the cars. One time he brought home what we all called, “ a piece of crap” 55 Chevy, that we all thought was beyond fixable. My
Dad worked on his “project” car for months and I was out in the garage a lot helping with whatever part of “I’m gonna fix this up” he needed. Long story short - He painted the car a bright yellow and it came out fabulous. He entered into our town’s 1st Annual Grape Festival Car Show-one of five cars:). He went on to enter a car most years and volunteered as a worker every year until he passed in 2017. So getting to help sponsor the Fall Festival Car Show is my way of still getting to “help” dad out in the Garage…..and MRP gets to be a part of a really cool happening in the community.
FALL FESTIVAL = Community. Coming together to celebrate our town, our people, our community. We love being able to be a small part of that and we all look forward to it every year.
