‘Dream come true’

Amid the hubbub of some of downtown Bozeman’s largest modern constructions — the Kimpton Armory Hotel, 5 Wes, the AC Hotel and the downtown Bozeman parking garage, the single-story deco-style building on the corner of Mendenhall and Tracy has been easily overlooked. The “Professional Building,” as named on a sign over the attached parking lot entrance, housed “law offices,” according to nondescript signage near the front entrance. Blinds were always drawn, providing passerby little reason to give the building a second glance. Much has changed this summer. With Bozeman artist LeeAnn Ramey leading the charge, the blinds have almost all come down. Plants welcome visitors at the entrances. Colorful art in the windows beckons passersby inside what is now LeeAnn Ramey Art, featuring a gallery space, room for a classroom or group studio, and six private artist studios. Metalsmith and

jewelry maker Beth Aimée is moving into her studio this week and painter Kara Tripp has already made a space her own. Artists featured in the gallery include Kathy Burk, Elizabeth Loftis, Hannah Uhde and Adrea Morgan, and Ramey is looking to expand. Send an email to inquire. A grand opening celebration is set for Aug 9, from 4 to 8 p.m.

“Everyone is coming in excited that we breathed a little life into this corner,” Ramey said on Tuesday, while husband Joe manned the counter and friend and artist Elizabeth Loftis drew a series of animals on the sidewalk out front for Sweet Pea Festival’s annual Chalk on the Walk event. Ramey, for her part, is currently the chairperson for the festival’s summer and winter art shows.

Though she has had a space in the Emerson Center’s Galleria Hall for years, Ramey had been seeking a larger location — one that would allow her to expand her gallery space and create a classroom area for her popular Sip-NPaint classes.

ALANA DE LA GARZA

“Behind Enemy Lines” (Available Now)

Fighter navigator Chris Burnett (Owen Wilson) wants out, looking for something more than the boring recon missions he’s been flying. He finds himself flying the lone Christmas day mission over war-torn Bosnia. But when he talks pilot Stackhouse (Gabriel Macht) into flying slightly off-course to check out an interesting target, the two get shot down.

Others have been moving from one Dick Wolf-produced series and role to another, but Alana De La Garza was among the first to do it.

The actress previously played prosecutor Connie Rubirosa not only in the parent “Law & Order” show but also in the spinoffs “Law & Order: LA” and (as a guest star) “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” When Sela Ward (“Gone Girl,” 2014) left Wolf’s “FBI” after its first season, De La Garza was summoned to join that CBS series as Isobel Castille, the special agent in charge of the New York division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation … and the actress remains with the Tuesday drama as it heads towards its seventh year, the first in a three-season renewal. “FBI” repeats also run regularly on Pop TV and ION Television.

Though it remains primarily a procedural show focused on the crime of the week, “FBI” has gradually been delving more into the personal lives of its regular characters. In Isobel’s case, that has meant viewers meeting her father (Nestor Serrano, “Bad Boys,” 1995) — a veteran lawyer with whom she has a very strained relationship — and some of her past romantic mates, including one who also was a partner of hers professionally.

While Isobel can display empathy and compassion for her agents, as with her recent support of Maggie Bell (played by Missy Peregrym, “Rookie Blue”) while the latter was considering motherhood, she also can be stern and unyielding when the circumstances dictate that. Such was the case early in Isobel’s current tenure when she took a hard line with Omar Adom “OA” Zidan (Zeeko Zaki, “Six”), when his personal

involvement in a case threatened to compromise the entire office. De La Garza has an additional link to the Wolf television empire: she’s a distant cousin of producer-writer Rene Balcer, who has been involved in shows in both the FBI and Law & Order franchises. And thanks to her current role, one of many she has played in series TV, De La Garza will continue to have a degree of job security that relatively few actors do.

The dinosaurs of “Jurassic World” roar again in “Fallen Kingdom”

When one considers a dinosaur movie these days, immediate thoughts generally run to the films in the “Jurassic Park” series.

Released in 2018, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” – which FX shows Thursday, Aug. 8, and Friday, Aug. 9 –carried the Steven Spielberg-produced franchise into its fifth chapter. That might suggest that you’d already seen a lot of what that film has to offer, but even so, there’s still no denying the special thrill of seeing prehistoric creatures and their genetically enhanced descendants in action in modern times. Their renewed existence is threatened, though, by a volcano on the island where the Jurassic World theme park existed. Some bigwigs have vested interests in moving the creatures away to another location before the lava starts flowing, and the characters played by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are enlisted to help in their positions from the previous movie.

Surprise, surprise: All is not what it seems, and those who have been acting in the best interests of the dinos find they’ve been duped into assisting with an evil scheme. If you think they’re not happy about it, wait until you see the reactions of those whose names end in “-saurus” and “-raptor.”

B.D. Wong and Jeff Goldblum both return from earlier “Jurassic” editions, with Rafe Spall, Toby Jones, James Cromwell and Ted Levine among notable cast additions here.

It goes without saying, but we’ll say it: “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” is what it is, and that’s not necessarily a putdown. By the fifth movie in a series, you know what to expect, though one would hope for more that feels fresh. At the same time, you can understand what the filmmakers are working against, and that includes the memories held by those who were in the theater seats for any or all of the previous four times.

Sara Haines

OF THE VIEW ON ABC

Q: Wasn’t Sara Haines, of “The View,” on “Today” many years ago?

A: She was, and she actually worked behind the scenes of the NBC morning show before becoming an on-air presence on it. In fact, she was behind the scenes at the network overall, since she initially was a page, assisting on various programs and also giving studio tours. After her time doing that, she became a production coordinator on “Today,” again filling a variety of functions in helping to get the show on the air.

Eventually, Haines became a contributing correspondent for the fourth hour of “Today” from 2009 to 2013, which set her up to make a move to ABC News. Though she did general reporting, she also became the entertainment-news anchor on weekend editions of “Good Morning America.” That gave her a visibility that surely helped when “The View” needed someone at its table, a job Haines filled a number of times as a guest before she was named a permanent co-host of the show in 2016.

In 2018, Haines left “The View” to join Michael Strahan as a host of a third weekday hour of “Good Morning America,” with Keke Palmer joining them later as another host. When the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020, that incarnation of the hour was replaced by “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (which has remained since), and Haines returned to “The View.”

Haines also has done other work for ABC, in both news and entertainment programming. She has hosted a version of the game show “The Chase,” and she recently served as a correspondent – along with W. Kamau Bell – for the 17th season of the John Quinones-hosted “What Would You Do?”

business of TV

It may not have the edge of other movies about, but “Broadcast News” may not be the edgiest movie ever made about the television business, but it’s hugely likable and entertaining. Being shown by Starz Encore on Sunday, Aug. 4, writer-director James L. Brooks’ 1987 comedy-drama comes from a world he already knew, having co-created the TV newsroom of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” However, he fortified his effort here by having as an adviser Susan Zirinsky, a veteran CBS News producer who later became the chief of that entire division.

She’s also the inspiration for one of the story’s chief characters Jane Craig, a driven producer in a network bureau in Washington, D.C. The role made Holly Hunter a star, and perfectly cast opposite her is William Hurt as charismatic Tom Grunick, a newly hired reporter whose admission of not fully understanding the job repulses Jane, though she also can’t deny her attraction to him. Albert Brooks completes the tale’s romantic triangle as Aaron Altman, a correspondent who’s more than capable at his job, though he lacks Tom’s star quality. This film remains enjoyable to watch time and again.

U.S. women’s basketball in search of eighth consecutive gold medal

Day 9 of the 2024 Paris Olympics continues with women’s basketball as the United States takes on Germany at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Villeneuve-d’Ascq, France, Sunday, Aug. 4, with tip-off airing live on NBC and Peacock.

Gearing up for what the U.S. hopes will be its eighth consecutive gold medal, it hopes to continue its dominance on the international stage — something it has done since 1996.

Leading the charge are two-time WNBA MVPs A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, alongside soon-to-be six-time Olympian Diana Taurasi. Joining in on the younger side, but still carrying a tremendous amount of credited experience, are the likes of Jackie Young, Brittney Griner, Napheesa Collier and none other than Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum.

A veteran point guard with scoring prowess and a fearless playmaking ability always on full display, Plum has been a major piece for the American women’s basketball program in both 3x3 and 5-on-5 basketball, earning her only Olympic medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 3x3.

Leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, Plum has been on fire in the WNBA, averaging 18.7 points with a shooting percentage of 45.3% from the field and 39.8% from beyond the arch. Beyond that, Plum averages 4.7 assists, while adding 2.3 rebounds, showing her hustle, determination and incredible versatility as a point guard.

Four-time WNBA champion and three-time WNBA Coach of the Year Cheryl Reeve has put together a team with a balanced mix of veterans and youth, something that not many of the other teams will have. In 13 Olympic appearances, the American women’s basketball team has never missed the podium, even in the two years it didn’t win gold.

The U.S. faces Germany, Japan and Belgium in Group C, with the U.S. taking on Germany in the final group stage match Sunday, Aug. 4.

Ideally, the space would be in the city’s core, where the sense of community was visceral. Options were slim and Ramey had started looking elsewhere, like the Gallatin Valley Mall.

Ramey had just about given up on the idea of a downtown space when friends Cory and Carrie Lawrence, who are part of the Armory’s ownership group, floated the idea of their building at 27 N. Tracy Ave.

“It’s a dream come true,” Ramey said.

LeeAnn Ramey Art hasn’t quite taken over the entire building — one lawyer still has claim to a rear corner and a couple “building managers” from the Armory staff and their pups have claimed an office — she is already eying the large basement. Now, she said, it is perfect for a Halloween party, but she would like to see more artists in the space.

“That’s Phase 2,” she said.

Ramey is a native of Nashville, where she was born and spent more than 40 years. Seeking somewhere a bit cooler than the South, she and Joe moved here with their daughters about 11 years ago, falling in love with the mountains and the community and the Bobcats.

The move also gave Ramey
