Siramural

This spring, a group of Montana State University students left a lasting mark on Stadio Nicola De Simone, a nearly 100-year-old stadium in Siracusa, on the eastern shore of Italy’s island of Sicily.

The mural, known as “Siramural,” stands about 3 meters tall and is 50 meters long, taking over a wall inside the stadium to the left of the entrance. It is painted in entirely blue and white, with subjects that speak to the stadium itself and the surrounding community..

A collage of photographs recreating the entirety of the mural line two walls of the Exit Gallery in MSU’s Strand Union Building. The exhibition, sponsored by the School of Art, will be on display through Sept. 20. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday

the artists on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This spring, 21 students participated in the study-abroad opportunity that led to the mural’s creation, most in the second semester of their junior year at MSU. The idea, School of Art professor Bruce Barnhart said, is to expose MSU students to the classical cultural and artistic history that far predates that of the United States.

“The program, created 20 years ago, is led by Dr. Regina Gee and provides an intensive and engaging studio and art history experience by immersing participants in the culture of Italy, with coursework led by their own professors,” according to an info placard on the program in the Exit Gallery. Other faculty members for the 2024 program were Dani Huaveren and Jeremy Hatch.

‘Fatal Attraction’ remains a powerful cautionary tale

“Fatal Attraction” is still as effective a warning about extramarital affairs as ever.

The famously disturbing 1987 melodrama about an ill-advised dalliance turns up Sunday, Sept. 15 on MGM+ Drive-In, and Saturday, Sept. 21, on MGM+ Marquee ... and watching it might nip some relationships in the bud. At the time of its initial release, the subject matter landed stars Michael Douglas and Glenn Close on national magazine covers to illustrate detailed discussions of the movie’s theme, which the stars’ pairing continues to represent this many years later.

Director Adrian Lyne’s film casts Douglas as an attorney who meets book editor Close through work circumstances. While his wife (Anne Archer, “Short Cuts,” 1993) and young daughter (Ellen Hamilton Latzen, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” 1989) are away, one thing leads to another, and eventually to a one-night stand that Douglas’ Dan takes much more casually than Close’s Alex does. As Alex tries to insinuate her way deeper into Dan’s life, he tries to make it clear that she doesn’t have a permanent place there, increasingly angering her.

As she starts to lash out in various ways — one of them memorably involving the daughter’s pet rabbit — Dan fears he’s going to have to come clean to his trusting spouse about his infidelity.

The success of “Fatal Attraction” (which Paramount+ turned into a one-season series) launched a number of movies for Douglas, also including “Basic Instinct” (1992) and “Disclosure” (1994), about men making the wrong sexual choices. That well could have become his entire screen identity for years, had he not shown his diversity through such other roles as his Oscar-winning turn as ruthless business raider Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street” (1987).

For Close, “Fatal Attraction” was also a breakout project. The filmmakers reportedly didn’t think she could pull off the required sensuality, but a screen test changed their minds quickly, with the result broadening the choices of parts Close would have access to afterward. Her impact here was so powerful, the producers ended up changing the intended ending to let audiences feel more satisfied.

Answers:

Dermot Mulroney

OF CHICAGO FIRE ON NBC

Q: I understand that Dermot Mulroney is joining “Chicago Fire” for its new season. Why have there been so many cast changes on that show lately?

A: That can happen with a series that has run for a long time, and that NBC drama will be entering its 13th season when it resumes new episodes on Sept. 25. Dermot Mulroney will be playing the new chief of Firehouse 51, succeeding Eamonn Walker, who has said that he is open to returning for guest appearances as Wallace Boden. There’s precedent for that, since founding cast member Jesse Spencer has made multiple returns as Matt Casey since leaving as a series regular.

If one looks at the history of “Chicago Fire,” changes in its co-stars are nothing new. Lauren German departed after the first couple of seasons when her paramedic character Leslie Shay died on duty, and Kara Killmer followed as her replacement, Sylvie Brett. Killmer herself left the show last season, and Jocelyn Hudon — a familiar face from Hallmark Channel movies in recent years — is now succeeding her as Lizzie Novak.

Monica Raymund left the role of paramedic Gabby Dawson after six seasons, and she also has made returns as a guest star. Charlie Barnett departed as firefighter Peter Mills after the first few years of the show, and Miranda Rae Mayo joined as firefighter Stella Kidd in Season 4 (and married Lt. Kelly Severide, played by Taylor Kinney, in Season 10). Firefighter Brian “Otis” Zvonecek, portrayed by Yuri Sardarov, died at the start of Season 8 from injuries suffered on the job.

Dora Madison, Steven R. McQueen, Annie Ilonzeh and Alberto Rosende are among other “Chicago Fire” alums. And though he wasn’t a series regular, Treat Williams made sufficient appearances as Severide’s firefighter-veteran father Benny over the first seven years to have a presence on the series; the character died in Season 7.

Audrey Tautou

OF THE DA VINCI CODE ON COLUMBIA PICTURES/IMAGINE ENTERTAINMENT

Q: Why haven’t I seen Audrey Tautou in a while?

A: French star Audrey Tautou (“Amelie,” 2001) created expectations of a big, English-lan- guage breakthrough in the mid-2000s, first with her appearance in the Oscar-nominated British drama “Dirty Pretty Things” (2002) and then her blockbuster breakthrough in 2006’s “The Da Vinci Code.”

But, instead of sticking around in Hollywood (or London, for that matter), she went home and just resumed her career as one of France’s most famous and bankable stars — and she’s been quite busy there ever since.

She just recently did a voice in the kid-focused “Nina and the Hedgehog’s Secret” (2023), and before that starred in the hit comedy “The Trouble With You.” (These are just the English titles, obviously — both movies were in French.)

She did appear in a few French films with crossover appeal, though. She was in the 2013 ro- mantic fantasy “Mood Indigo,” which was directed by indie darling Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” 2004) and made a bit of a splash in art houses over here. She also performed the title role in 2009’s “Coco Before Chanel,” a biography of fashion legend Coco Chanel. This one, too, got some distribution over here and a lot of attention. There was one exception to all this, though — one return to this continent for an unabashedly American movie. She had a central role in the incredibly odd “The Jesus Rolls” (2019).

It was a sort of sequel to the 1998 indie classic “The Big Lebowski.” It followed one of that film’s side characters, Jesus Quintana, played by John Turturro (“O Brother Where Art Thou,” 2000), who also wrote and directed the film. But it was, at the same time, a remake of an even weirder French film from the 1974 called “Going Places.”

That’s perhaps why Tautou chose to participate, playing a woman who joins Quintana on a raunchy, crime-ridden road trip.

John Ritter plays ‘Hero’

in one of his movie roles

John Ritter’s television success in “Three’s Company” earned him some starring roles in movies, and “Hero at Large” is one of the most engaging examples. The second half of a Ritter double feature that Turner Classic Movies presents Sunday, Sept. 15, the 1980 comedy casts the ever-likable actor as a struggling performer who starts taking his temporary job to promote a “Captain Avenger” a bit too seriously, using the costume to maintain the charade and start foiling actual crimes.

The man’s popularity in his new guise makes him appealing to politicians who want to use him to boost their own agendas, but since the public finds out about that connection, he’s shunned and apparently put out of business … until he gets another chance to display true heroism. Ritter has a fine leading lady in Anne Archer, and the cast also includes such reliables as Kevin McCarthy and Bert Convy. Preceding this is the Peter Bogdanovich-directed “They All Laughed” (1981), in which Ritter worked with Audrey Hepburn and Ben Gazzara.

Brooks and continuing a weekend “Binge” marathon here — boasts a fabulous ensemble cast led by Judd Hirsch as arguably the most level-headed of the drivers. Tony Danza, Jeff Conaway and Marilu Henner play other cabbies, and Andy Kaufman got much attention as language-challenged mechanic Latka Gravas. One of the most distinctive players here, though, was Danny DeVito as hilariously gruff dispatcher Louie De Palma.

“Twister” (AMC, Sunday, Sept. 15, Tuesday, Sept. 17, and Wednesday, Sept. 18): With the sequel “Twisters” having been one of the summer’s top theatrical hits, it’s a good time to revisit the original 1996 movie. Directed by cinematography veteran Jan DeBont (”Speed”), the drama casts Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as maritally estranged storm chasers on the brink of divorce as they pursue powerful storms in Oklahoma, intending to deploy a device that could provide earlier warnings about such cataclysms approaching. Co-stars include Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman and the picture’s visual-effects team, the members of which not surprisingly earned an Oscar nomination for their work here.

David Caruso celebrity update

OF CSI: MIAMI ON CBS

Q: What happened to David Caruso after “CSI: Miami”?

A: In 2012, David Caruso (“CSI: Miami”) did the unthinkable: he retired at the peak of his success. By the time “Miami” ended its incredibly successful 10-season run in 2012, he was one of the most recognizable faces in the world (a few years earlier, in 2006, “CSI: Miami” was named the most-watched show on Earth).

That’s what makes his decision to quit the entertainment business even more incredible. Rather than parlaying that fame into another series, or even an easier run as a famous guest in other people’s stuff, he just dropped the mic.

He got into the art business, opening an art gallery in Los Angeles. He also opened a chic clothing store in Miami called Steam On Sunset. In a 2020 where-are-they-now story, Star magazine reported that he had become a local fixture in Miami, saying that people sometimes recognize him around South Beach, “but he keeps to himself and hangs in his condo.”

He hasn’t managed to completely evade the spotlight, though. The New York Post’s Page Six gossip column published a photo of him taken in 2023, pointing out that it was the first image of him seen since 2017.

Gasly, Alpine hungry for more points at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

The Formula One season continues in the beautiful streets of Baku, Azerbaijan, as the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix gets set to deliver another thrilling race weekend Sept. 13-15, with each stage of the race broadcast live on ESPN.

In a thrilling and competitive season of Formula One racing, with only eight races remaining, Pierre Gasly and Team Alpine have had a rollercoaster year, from crashes between teammates in Monaco to poor performances during qualifying.

Despite some setbacks to start the season, Gasly and Alpine have made small improvements throughout the year, managing to score points in Monaco, Canada, Spain and Austria, with his most recent point performance coming at the Dutch Grand Prix, putting in a strong performance starting and finishing ninth, managing to hold some of the faster cars for an extended period.

Additionally, the recent appointment of executive technical director David Sanchez back in May has helped the team maintain a winning mindset, which is crucial for the team’s continued success — something Sanchez has been very pleased with as he looks to carry that mindset going into the final weeks of the season and for years to come.

“Another objective for the team is to try and keep building the foundation of the sort of mindset of racing spirit we’d like to build for the future,” Sanchez said in an Alpine mid-season review. “It is different from where we’ve been in the last few months or few years, but it’s one transformation which is ongoing, and it’s already been fruitful and we definitely keep building on this one,” Sanchez said.

Although Gasly would like to have some better results this season, he remains optimistic about the team’s future, recently signing a new contract with Alpine that will see him remain with the team for 2025 and beyond.

For the first half of the semester, students toured the country, going from “Rome to Venice to Florence to Naples to Pompeii,” as a trio of participants listed in unison. Most stayed in Italy for the week-long spring break before landing on the island of Sicily, where they are immersed in a variety of studio arts in collaboration with the Mediterranean Arts & Design (or MADE) program at the Accademia di Belle Arti Rosario Gagliardi.

This immersion can bit nerve wracking for some students, Barnhart said. The study abroad program is open to all students in MSU’s School of Arts, including those studying art history and other majors without a studio focus.

The mural project was led by Barnhart and Carlo Alberto Giardina, a muralist from Siracusa and a MADE faculty member,.

According to Barnhart, Giardina was so well-known and trusted in Siracusa that the stadium didn’t place restrictions on the mural, only specifying that the art be in the team colors, light blue and white. One of the nicknames for the home team, Siracusa Calcio 1924, is “Azzurri,” or “All-Blues.”

In the U.S., the inclination would be to have the wall replastered to start with a pristine surface, explained Bruce Barnhart, one of the MSU professors leading the 2024 study-abroad program in the School of Art. Here, the students worked with the portions of the plaster-covered rock wall that had started to crumble, using the texture as part of the overall design. One of the two included lions — the mascot for the Siracusa Calcio 1924 — seems to be sketched over a rough patch of a wall, looking over an orange tree painted on a section of pristine plaster.

The mural itself is a collage of sorts, with students designing elements of the whole based on research and conversations with people living in the area. There are nods to local topography, to regional foods, to Archimedes (a mathematician from Siracusa) and of course, soccer. Holly Peterson, a senior in graphic design, leaned into

the idea of community with a pair of clasped hands, one light and one dark, surrounded by a small sun and moon.

“The soccer stadium, we found very quickly, was like a city center where everyone came together,” she said. “And being able to represent that through two hands, holding felt like it represented all the different relationships that came together.”

The community also embraced the artists and the mural, with some of the stud

Ali Rysted, a senior in art history and museum studies and one of the Exit Gallery directors, leaned into the island itself, with a fish and seaweed motif that provided a backdrop for another student’s fish and soccer ball piece. Rystead’s segment of the mural is also a nod to the community, drawn from talkies with a MADE Academy student named Angelica.

“She’s from Siracusa, born and raised,” Rystead said. “And so I was asking her what Siracusa meant to her. And she talked a lot about there being a lot of unity in the people of Siracusa that they don’t really see on the mainland. The customs are very integral to everyone. So I took it as a school fish, all moving in the same direction.”

In another portion of the mural, Madeline Trawick, a senior in graphic design and art history and another of the Exit Gallery’s directors, created a pixelated version of Saint Lucy, or Lucia of Siracusa, who was martyred in a nearby basilica.

“Here presence was so common, everyday I would see her,” Trawick said.

Lucia is depicted with flowers covering her eyes, as she was said to have gouged them out to avoid marrying a suitor. She is also referenced in a small round portion of the mural, a plate with eyes similar to those Lucia is often depicted holding. The inclusion of Lucia lends to the respectability of the mural, and according to a stadium groundskeeper who held back tears when he first saw her likeness, is likely to keep graffiti artists at bay.

“It’s an honor to leave art somewhere that is so known for its art,” Peterson said.

Checking in with

ASHLEY WILLIAMS

Ashley Williams has done many cable movie roles, but no other has likely been as personal for her as her latest one.

The Hallmark Channel regular returns in the new film “Falling Together,” which makes its premiere on the network Saturday, Sept. 21 — appropriately timed for World Alzheimer’s Day.

The late mother of Williams and her fellow actress sister, Kimberly Williams-Paisley (“Father of the Bride,” 1991), had Alzheimer’s disease, and in the movie, Ashley’s newly relocated character, Natalie, becomes involved in a Walk to End Alzheimer’s in an effort to get a sense of community after failing to connect

While servicing Hallmark Channel’s seasonal Fall Into Love franchise, “Falling Together” also meets the channel’s intent to expand its subject matter. “There are moments that are incredibly emotional,” Ashley Williams confirms, “but it’s really not a depressing movie. I look at it as a rom-com. My background is in drama, but I’ve learned so much from working in comedy over the years, and my favorite thing is blending those genres together.”

Also an executive producer of “Falling Together” along with her husband, Neal Dodson (“Margin Call,” 2011), the lively Williams has been active in Alzheimer’s-related walks and (with her family) an annual Dance Party to End Alz, set this year for Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles on Oct. 22. A pivotal scene in “Falling Together” features photos of Williams’ mother, Linda, and the late parents of two of her close friends and fellow Hallmark Channel staples: Nikki DeLoach’s (“Curious Caterer: Foiled Plans,” 2024) father, who had dementia, and Andrew Walker’s (“For Love & Honey,” 2024) mother, who had Alzheimer’s.

“There’s much to mourn and to be heartbroken about when it relates to this disease,” Williams acknowledges, “but the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a joyful occasion where people come together to honor their loved ones, honor the caretakers and raise money. And by the way, walking is one of the best things you can do to ward off dementia, so it’s a win-win-win.”
