CHRISTMAS STROLL 2023
The Downtown Bozeman Association presents:
The 43rd Annual Christmas Stroll Poster Contest Winner, Sam Fry! T
he Christmas Stroll has been one of the longest-standing Bozeman community traditions and with that, the Annual Poster Design Contest! The Downtown Bozeman Association put out a “Call for Art” for the official Christmas Stroll Poster in early fall, and this year bought a whole array of festive and wonderfully creative designs!
Meet the 43rd Annual Christmas Stroll Poster Contest Winner, Sam Fry! Sam is 22 years old and has spent every one of those years here in the great state of Montana. He is a current Graphic Design student at Montana State University and thanks his instructors and peers for their
help with this year’s design. The winning design showcases a Bozeman Christmas through a vintage, old west lens mixed with a town staple – the Baxter Hotel. We call it, “Yee-ho-ho-ho”. For the inspiration behind this design, Sam credits one of the things that makes Montana great – rodeos. “Montana has been the dream of many cowboys in the past, and in recent years the popularity of rodeos has exploded in the greater Bozeman area. I thought it would be cool to reference sort of a vintage rodeo poster look, while also tying in some iconic Christmas flair. All things considered, I think the two elements blended nicely into a
nice harmony of bold and eyecatching but also warm and cozy. Most importantly though, I just think that the idea of a cowboy Santa Clause riding a Rudolph the bucking reindeer is just so cool.” The 43rd Annual Christmas Stroll Poster design by Fry will adorn all businesses windows in downtown Bozeman and will be featured on all event marketing materials. In addition to the notoriety of having their artwork featured, a $200 cash prize will be issued to the winning artist, Sam Fry!

RC Townsend , One of Bozeman’s
2023 CHRISTMAS STROLL
3
Finest, to Emcee Christmas Stroll By Patricia Horwell
RC Townsend’s name is practically synonymous with Bozeman. An academic advisor at Montana State University, he is a graduate of Bozeman High School and Gonzaga University. Townsend was raised here, along with his sister, and is proud of his Bozeman heritage. And now, he’s proud to be this year’s Christmas Stroll Master of Ceremonies. A communicator at heart, public speaking is his forte. “I’m not afraid of speaking in front of a crowd,” he said. While in school he participated in the Hawks Night Talent Show and was the Salutatorian of his graduating
class. “Ever since then, I found myself speaking in front of crowds.” He spent 12 years at Mountain Sky Guest Ranch, three years in the role of general manager. Now he speaks to and guides young people. “I enjoy working with and being a support to young people who are navigating a new experience,” he said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to provide them with mentorship, guidance and assistance. The son of a fourth-generation Montanan (his mom), Townsend is looking forward to his duties as emcee.
“I’ll be helping Santa Claus with the lighting ceremony,” he said. “I’ll be there to support Santa and help lead the crowd down the street, lighting the lights at every stop.” And he’s looking forward to the Gingerbread House Contest. “I’ve been so impressed with the details on some of them. It’s a little humbling after you’ve built one at home and you think you’ve done a pretty good job. After seeing the houses in the contest, you realize you have a long way to go.” This is Townsend’s first time in this role. “I just want to help kick off an event that is so meaningful to me, my family and friends
living in the community where I’ve grown up — Bozeman.

GINGERBREAD CONTEST — the
Sweetest Christmas Stroll Event By Patricia Horwell
I
t’s time to put your judge’s hat on and head over to the 43rd annual Christmas Stroll Gingerbread House Contest. Visitors can peruse the creative confections between 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., Dec. 2. at the American Legion’s second-floor event space, 225 E Main St., Bozeman. There will be more than 40 sweet structures to assess. Choose your favorite architects in each category: children, 6 and under and 7-12; teens, 13-17; adults, 18 and over; and professional bakers or pastry chefs. Christmas strollers will also have
the ability to vote for the People’s Choice winner by purchasing ballots at $1 each. Those donations will help fund the Sweet Pea Festival. Winners will receive a ribbon for first, second and third place as well as a prize package including Downtown Dollars, Sweet Pea Festival Day passes and other goodies. “This is a great way to showcase the creativity of our community,” said Cache Perdue Maples, program director for the Downtown Bozeman Association, a cosponsor of the competition. “A free event, the contest relies on community engagement and is an opportunity
to build a loving relationship with Main Street.” Prizes are being provided through generous community donors and sponsors, Maples said. “We are thankful to the American Legion Post #14, which opened its doors to us and to the folks from the Sweet Pea Festival, who do a fantastic job and most of the legwork. Finally, First Interstate Bank provides really valuable and needed fiscal support.” Sigma Nu, the Bridger Solar Team and Montana Youth Challenge Academy also volunteer their time at the event. Residents and their guests are sure to have a terrific time at this beloved
and fun event. But be forewarned, you may look at the houses and vote, but do not munch. Remember, Santa’s watching.
