Through November, area species will begin flocking to leave for their wintering grounds, other varieties will make a brief stopover during their migrations, and the heartiest breeds, such as the rough-legged hawk and common redpoll, will move in from the Arctic to find a better food supply.

Montana Audubon named Parker its 2012 Citizen Scientist of the Year for his leadership of the Bozeman Christmas Count, and his counts to help establish the Harrison Reservoir and Madison Valley Important Bird Areas.

In the middle of our coffee shop conversation, he stopped to comment on the bird song coming in the open door. “Hear that? That’s a white-crowned sparrow. They have a real beautiful song.”

• On optics: “Spend as much money as you can on good binoculars. Don’t waste your time with binoculars under $100.” Consider weight, how the pair feels in your hands, lens brightness and optical power. Common magnifications are 8x and 10x. “Tens are great if you’re doing a hawk watch or looking at shorebirds. Eights have a wider field of vision that makes it easier to find birds in the woods.”

• Compact binoculars are a good first pair. The lenses are smaller but still good optically. They’re easy to carry, lightweight and provide good value for less cost. Parker isn’t a fan of zoom lenses, which are heavier and optically less clear.

• On guidebooks: The best books are arranged taxonomically, by family. The Sibley guides have been hugely popular since the early 2000s, for the quality and number of their bird paintings and their range maps. Parker likes the National Geographic guides, for their size and descriptions. On longer car trips, Parker takes at least two guides, a pair of binoculars and a scope.

I can’t keep my visual identifications – of juveniles and adults, and sometimes even males and females – straight. “How do you remember the songs?” I asked.

“Some of us don’t very well,” he said sympathetically, as a natural teacher would.

“A lot of the best songbirds are migratory. They’re singing for two months, and then you have 10 months to forget them. You relearn them again next spring.”

Then he enthusiastically endorsed birding phone apps. “They’re absolutely great.

I recommend Sibley or iBird Pro.” Parker likes the natural history aspect of birding, what birds eat and do, their range and migration, “why a bird’s here or there. And I always had an inclination to enjoy the outdoors – the places you go to look for birds can be drop-dead gorgeous.”

Some people keep exact life counts of the species they’ve spotted. Parker admits he has several lists going but can’t remember his tallies. Ask him about a great birding adventure and he’s as likely to tell you about making a quick stop at Sacajawea Park to watch the wood ducks or about the dome-shaped American dipper nest he spotted atop a burned log hanging over the rapids of a Yellowstone creek yesterday. Birding is as common or exotic as you make it.

So what is he “looking for” when he’s birding?

He laughed. “For pure enjoyment.”

10 TIPS FOR WEED CONTROL

We

gardeners struggle

with weeds. We don’t want our beautiful flowers or our

vegetable gardens taken over by them. But

what to do? Here are some hints to help you keep your gardens weed free.

1. Hit the garden instead of the gym. Weeding your gardens is good for you, body and mind.

Enjoy a beautiful summer morning – our mornings are cool here, so morning is a good time to work in your garden. Listen to the birds sing and realize you are burning calories while improving your mood as you get rid of weeds.

2. Keep your favorite tools and gloves handy for whenever the weeding mood strikes you. My favorite tools are a multiuse weeding knife and an old hand cultivator that was my mother’s.

3. Don’t let weeds get away from you. Get rid of them when there are fewer of them and they are small. If you have a lot of weeds, work on one small area at a time so the task doesn’t seem overwhelming.

4. Soil should be moist but not muddy for best weed pulling. Weeds don’t pull easily when the soil is dry; they break off. Working with your soil when it is too wet will cause it to clump.

5. Disturb soil only where you need to. Soil contains weed seeds that can remain dormant for a long time. Digging and cultivating brings hidden seeds to the surface, where they will then get enough light to sprout and grow.

6. A 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch will hold moisture in your soil, keep weeds down and make any weeds that do come up easier to pull. Soil Pep, which is ground-up bark, is what we use. Or use compost as a mulch. In shrub beds, organic mulches like shredded cedar or bark chips work well. I am not a fan of landscape fabric under mulch. The fabric compacts the soil, weeds grow on top of it, and the mulch atop it blows away easily. Also, fabric is not-well suited for a perennial flower bed.

7. Don’t let weeds go to seed. Deadheading buys you some time and weakens the weed until you can remove it. If you continue to cut tough weeds like thistles off at the ground before they go to seed, they will eventually weaken and die.

8. Water only the “good” plants. In our garden, we have a drip system that waters the rows of vegetable plants and drips on individual tomato plants, but not on the weeds in between.

9. Vinegar is an organic weed control. Sprayed on, vinegar will kill weeds. But it will also kill any plant it hits, so be careful.

10. Use chemical herbicides as a last resort.

Be sure to read and follow all label instructions.

Pre-emergent herbicides like Preen prevent seeds from germinating, so apply to weed-free, already planted gardens. Nonselective herbicides, such as Glyphosate (Roundup), kill all plants (good and bad) if they hit the leaves. We do not like to use these on or near our vegetable garden.

Controlling weeds in your lawn is a different topic altogether. A bluegrass lawn (most local lawns are Kentucky bluegrasses) that is healthy is less likely to be weedy.

Sufficient water (1.5 inches of water per week is needed in July and early August), frequent mowing (once a week or more), and fertilizer three times a summer are three steps to a healthy lawn.

Don’t mow your grass too short, especially when it’s hot. Set your mower for 3 inches or more in height. Organic gardeners have had success with corn gluten applied to lawns as a pre-emergent herbicide. But if weeds still appear in your lawn and digging them out is too much work, chemical control may be called for. For best results killing weeds in lawns, use a liquid spray containing 2-4D broadleaf killer.

Fancy & Not So Fancy Footwear

I

noticed a most stunning pair of shoes this past weekend. They gleamed in the sunlight, and the silver soles merged into a

metallic red that glistened and flashed as the wearer moved

along the street. I took a good look at the man sporting these

marvelous creations and broke into a smile of glee. The owner of

those fancy shoes had more years under his belt than I do.

Footwear has certainly changed since I was a youngster. Every summer my mother bought us our canvas sneakers, which we dearly loved and wore hard all summer long. We received somewhat sturdier shoes for the return to school. The number of colors and choices just didn’t exist back then, not in our household at least. Our canvas sneakers were just that: sneakers. And we were thrilled when we could choose red or blue. We didn’t have options like walking shoes, running shoes, hikers, sport shoes, cross trainers, athletic shoes, trail shoes or any of the other choices available today.

As older people now, we have no hesitations about wearing sporty, gaudy footwear. How times have changed, and in this case for the better. I’m thinking here of what older men and women used to wear

on their feet, way back when homing pigeons still numbered in the millions.

My sister and I, by no means fashion experts and totally uninterested in trends, still did notice apparel such as footwear. I recall the two of us discussing shoes. We made a lot of declarations about what we would and would not allow to happen to us as we aged.

Most of our promises, such as assuring ourselves that we would NEVER look or act like Mother, fell by the wayside, trampled underfoot by reality. One vow, however, we both kept, and this vow involved shoes. Under no circumstances would either of us ever wear old lady shoes.

I’m talking about those ubiquitous shoes our elementary school teachers, grandmothers, choir directors, preachers’ wives and other frightfully old, humorless, scowling, elderly (to us) ladies wore on a daily basis. You know, those sturdy lace-up shoes with short chunky heels, rather like an Oxford.

Back then, it seemed that all the older teachers, those wizened prunes who had to have been at least 45 or 50 ancient years old, wore them, in the exciting colors of drab black or mouse brown. The young teachers never wore such hideous footwear.

Likely those shoes did provide some sort of comfort. In a day and age when teachers still dressed up for the classroom, prettier, more fashionable footwear likely did not supply the necessary support required for a person who stood on her feet a great deal of the day. That does not change the fact that the shoes were unbelievably ugly and forever branded the wearer as an old lady with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

My sister and I swore we would never wear such atrocious shoes. We never have, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt we never will. I’m not even sure a person can purchase them any longer.

Shoe technology and fashion, like everything else, has changed dramatically since I left high school behind me. People of all ages now enjoy shoes of all colors and descriptions, shoes that supply the required support for whatever activity they are designed for.

Today’s footwear fashions generally do not distinguish between generations either, which was the reason I smiled when I saw the showy running shoes worn by a most definitely older man. Occasionally I do see an older gentleman wearing what I consider “old man shoes,” but for the most part, those of us with some age on us feel free to wear whatever strikes our fancy, and to take advantage of the extravagant colors available to us.

I feel so grateful for that small blessing. I know that whatever footwear I decide to put on my feet today, they will not brand me as a little old lady.

Yet they will still provide me with the required support so I can accomplish whatever activity I set out to do.

mature adults and the ways they “Age Out Loud!”

Adults 55 and older are invited to submit their own one-page story of what it means to “Age Out Loud” by Aug. 11. Selected stories will be shared at an “Honored Citizens Day” event at Irving Elementary School during International Active Aging Week, Sept. 25-39.

“Age Out Loud” can be broadly interpreted to include life stories of: Your contributions to the community, family, the workplace, church, etc.; How your values influenced choices or goal-setting in life; How you addressed or overcame obstacles or challenges (personal or professional); A legacy or advice for young people; An expression of your passion or goals; What gives you purpose in life; Making a difference; A second career after retirement . . . just to name a few.

Stories may also touch on appreciation for the work ethic, resilience, how mature adults have influenced or ignited changes, or sparked new and exciting opportunities, advantages and/or options for their own generation or younger people.

Selected story authors will be contacted by the Bozeman Parks and Recreation Department. “Age Out Loud” stories that are not part of the Honored Citizens Day event may be posted publicly at the library, at various senior venues, or possibly in the October issue of Prime Magazine.

ooray! Summer is here and Bozeman is buzzing.

Along with outdoor concerts, downtown art walks, river floats and mountain biking and hiking, the farmers markets are back: at Bogert Park, 5-8 p.m.

Tuesdays; at Haynes Pavilion at Gallatin County Fairgrounds, 9-Noon Saturdays; at Belgrade’s Lewis & Clark Park, 5-8 p.m.

Thursdays; and at Big Sky’s Fire Pit Park at Town Center, 5-8 p.m. Wednesdays.

Fruits and vegetables should be a staple in our diets. Lindsay Kordick, registered dietitian and an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist, has plenty of yummy ideas for getting our daily produce allotment. “Fruits and vegetables add large amounts of vitamins, minerals and fiber to our diet. They aren’t calorie dense, compared to meats, dairy and grains, so we can fill up on them for fewer calories. The benefits of the vitamins and minerals in these foods are endless.”

Plant-based diets have been known to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of diabetes. Increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables while decreasing intake of meat and dairy can also lead to weight loss.

This isn’t to say you have to cut out meat and dairy entirely. Kordick is a firm believer in balance and moderation. “A plant-based diet does not have to be an allor-nothing strategy to improve your health. Many people continue to choose smaller portions of meat less often and still retain the benefits of this diet,” she said.

Serving sizes can be tricky. Kordick recommends getting at least the minimum combination of fruits and vegetables a day, which is five servings total. A serving size is one cup of raw vegetables or half a cup of cooked vegetables. A medium apple, or one cup of grapes or berries is one fruit serving.

To cook or not to cook? Certain vegetables, like broccoli, retain more of their nutrients when served raw. However, cooking veggies often makes them more palatable. “To retain the nutrient content of vegetables, avoid boiling them, which can leach some nutrients into the cooking water. Instead, choose grilling, roasting, stir fry, saute or steam as your preferred cooking methods,” Kordick said.

Farmers markets are a great place to pick up organic produce. Not only are organic fruits and vegetables more likely to be sustainably produced, but some foods, like tomatoes, retain higher levels of micronutrients when grown organically. Organic produce may contain fewer pesticide residues too.

The most important thing is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. “The goal of a balanced diet is to fill half of your plate with fruit and vegetables at each meal. Produce also makes a great snack. Grilling and roasting are healthy, easy ways to prepare vegetables, and adding them to soups and sauces is a great way to squeeze in an extra serving as well.”

Vegetable Spring Rolls with Ginger Lemongrass Dipping Sauce Makes 12 rolls

Creamy Tomato Gazpacho Serves 3 12 spring roll wrappers (found next to the tofu or in the Asian aisle of your grocery store) 1 cup vermicelli rice noodles, prepared per package instructions 12 romaine lettuce leaves 2 carrots, peeled and sliced into thin 3-inch sticks 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and sliced into 3-inch sticks 1/2 red pepper, seeded and sliced into 3-inch sticks 12 sugar snap peas (optional) “Mise en place” is the French term for “everything in its place.” This is important for rolling spring rolls. In addition to rice paper wrappers, noodles and vegetables, you need a large bowl with warm water, a clean work surface and a plate for finished rolls.

Take a rice paper wrapper and place it into the warm water. After about 10 seconds it softens (the warmer the water, the faster is softens). Remove paper carefully and place it onto your clean work surface.

Place about 10 strands of prepared rice noodles, one romaine leaf, 2 slices cucumber, 2 slices carrot and 1 slice red pepper onto the left side of the wrapper.

Fold the wrapper in half, bringing the bottom edge near the top edge.

Fold in half again, bringing the right side over to the left side.

Roll upwards to encase the vegetable ingredients into a roll. Place on a plate for serving.

Ginger Lemongrass Dipping Sauce Makes about 1 cup 3/4 cup rice vinegar 1/2 cup honey 2 cloves garlic, pressed and finely minced 1-1/2 tsp red chili flakes 2 Tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and finely minced 2 stalks lemongrass, finely minced Whisk vinegar and honey together in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Bring to a low boil, then reduce heat and simmer 10-15 minutes until reduced and thickened slightly. Stir in garlic, ginger, chili flakes and lemongrass. Pour into a glass container and place in refrigerator for 30 minutes or until chilled.

Serve in individual bowls for dipping.

Nutrition Info per 2 Rolls with 2 Tbsp Dipping Sauce: 142 calories, 1 g fat, 32 g carbohydrates

4 tomatoes, quartered 1 tsp olive oil 1 large garlic clove, pressed and chopped 2 shallots, finely sliced 1 tsp brown sugar 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar, divided 8 basil leaves, chopped 1 roasted red pepper, blotted of oil and moisture 4 ice cubes 2/3 cup plain low-fat yogurt 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper In a small nonstick skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, garlic and shallots. Saute until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add brown sugar and 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar. Continue to heat until shallots have softened and vinegar has thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and add to a large food processor or blender.

To the processor with shallots, add remaining ingredients and blend until a smooth puree is formed. Transfer to a bowl and place in refrigerator to chill for at least 20 minutes but up to 24 hours (can be made one day ahead). Serve garnished with a basil leaf.

BOZEMAN: ■ HELP CENTER: Looking for a volunteer to call elderly or homebound people in the morning between 8-11am to chat a bit on the phone one morning per week. Volunteer would come into the office 3 times for training but can make calls from home.

■ BELGRADE SENIOR CENTER: Meals on Wheels needs substitute drivers. Delivery times are before Noon Monday-Friday.

■ BOZEMAN HEALTH: Volunteers needed to greet visitors and answer questions, escort patients and visitors throughout the hospital, transport medical equipment and deliver flowers. Volunteers also needed in the Care Boutique and Gift Shop to assist customers and work register.

■ HAWKS NEST: Volunteers needed at the Hawks Nest at Bozeman High to help with infants during nap time, 1-3pm, and in the toddler room 9:30-11am. Please call for more information.

■ CHILDREN’S MUSEUM STEAMLAB: Volunteers needed for hands-on science activities, art projects, electronic and robotic lab time.

Monday-Saturday, 2-hour shifts.

■ MUSEUM OF THE ROCKIES: Variety of opportunities including education, security, greeting guests and more.

LIVINGSTON: ■ LIVINGSTON DEPOT: Needs a Museum Attendant to greet visitors on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. A friendly personality is the only requirement.

■ LOAVES AND FISHES: Looking for people who enjoy cooking to help with the evening meal.

■ TRANSPORTATION: Looking for drivers to pick up patients and drive to local doctor’s appointments and home again.

■ FOOD PANTRY: Help others by giving a small investment of your time to help with food distribution on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

■ BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS: Be a positive grandparent role model for a child for a couple of hours a week.

■ FOOT CLINIC: Needs help twice a month to call patients with reminders of appointments and to assist nurses with foot care for our seniors.

Bozeman Senior Center The Bozeman Senior Center will be closed July 4 for Independence Day.

WHAT’S NEW ■ FARMERS MARKET. The Bozeman Senior Center again has a grant to provide lower income seniors over the age of 60 with coupons for the purchase of fresh produce at local farmers markets. They are available at the Center.

■ VISIT THE BOOKMOBILE. The new Bozeman Public Library Bookmobile will visit the Senior Center on Mondays, July 10 & 24, and Aug. 7 & 21, 10:15– 11:15am. Remember to bring your library card, or an I.D. to sign up for a free library card.

■ FLY CASTERS Wanted. (Dates TBD) Bear (Dan) McKinney has volunteered to teach fly casting. Call 586-2421, or stop by the front desk.

■ TRY RUG WEAVING. Come learn the art of Round Wagon Wheel rug weaving, as done by women traveling West by wagon in the 1800s.
