Shook Twins poised to go on tour

Katelyn Shook is walking in Portland, Oregon, when she takes the call for an interview to talk about her band’s upcoming tour. The name Shook Twins may have come about organically as identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook started performing over 15 years ago, but the band and the sisters have evolved.

Shook Twins is poised to set out on its first “significant” tour since the pandemic hit, and will stop at the Filling Station in Bozeman on Thursday, April 13. For Katelyn, who no longer lives in the city after returning instead to her roots in Sandpoint, Idaho, the time leading up to the tour feels celebratory, like it’s a treat to hang out with her sister and the band again, as well as tourmate Daniel Rodriguez, of Elephant Revival. They met Rodriguez 15 years ago, through their then booking agent and now manager.

and Washington. Hitting the road again induces both excitement and nerves. Katelyn admits to feeling a bit out of practice after three years without touring. But the break has also afforded the band room to grow, to flesh out its sound and write songs in preparation for a studio session in May. The tour will be an opportunity to share the new material with a live audience.

“We wanted to work out some arrangements and get really familiar and comfortable as a band with these songs,” Katelyn said. “We will probably not play all eight songs every night, but we’ll sprinkle them in throughout the tour so they get some equal play time, equal exploration.” Katelyn creates each setlist, omitting or adding songs “depending on the room or how the energy felt that night.” Some stops may include two other songs slated for the upcoming album.

“There’s a short list of friends, people who would boost your sales or you haven’t met yet, new friends you want to make,” Katelyn said. “It rarely works out that you get to go out with your friends. Everybody has their own path and is doing their own thing, so we feel fortunate to get this tour together.”

Shook Twins will perform around the Mountain west, looping out of Oregon to stops in Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Montana

“There are two songs we want to recreate, older songs that have just grown so much and become their own new song,” Katelyn said.

She describes the original version of “Time to Swim,” the first track from 2011’s “Window” album, as “bluegrassy,” featuring 32 banjo tracks.

“It’s still banjo driven, but we’ve been playing it for like 10 years,” Katelyn said. “It’s morphed into this more electronica feel.”

OF GENERAL HOSPITAL ON ABC

Q: With “General Hospital” celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and you marking your own 25th anniversary on the serial, how interesting is it for you to review the arc of your character, Elizabeth Webber?

A: I don’t think she has changed that much, but she has grown. She has three children to look after, and she has had many relationships that she’s learned from ... but every now and then, you see that feisty Elizabeth come back, especially recently.

Q: It takes the right acting partner to make a love story work, and you’ve had several on “General Hospital.” How do you feel about those?

A: I have been very fortunate with my pairings, going back to Elizabeth and Lucky, and I was paired with Jonathan Jackson. We were kids at the time, but that was such a beautiful story, a sweet and innocent first love. That taught Elizabeth what true love is supposed to feel like.

Then she ended up in a relationship with Jason Morgan, who was part of the mobster group in Port Charles, and that was her first grown-up experience. She’s been married, like, five times. And she’s still trying to figure it out. She’s not with anybody currently, which I think is really great for her.

Q: What do you think has given you such longevity as Elizabeth?

A: People can relate to her. She has failed at relationships, she has failed herself, and she has failed her children at times ... but she always seems to be able to pick herself back up and make things right.

TV restaurants: Places you’ll never eat at

Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant will tell you that there is more than enough material there to make a TV show.

And television has a long, proud history of doing just that, mining the eccentricities of diners and staff for laughs and the pressure of producing meals on demand for drama. Or just about any other scenario the writers can think up.

Some of these eateries can seem so real, a viewer can just about taste the meal coming on screen – or look so bad they’re glad the place doesn’t really exist. Like the following.

Monk’s Cafe, “Seinfeld”: Fittingly, the Manhattan coffee shop where Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer (Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards) often gathered to discuss the minutia of their lives served as a frequent setting for this much-decorated “show about nothing.” But food did come out of the kitchen, whether it was the soup with the rubber band in it or the takeout big salad that George bought for Elaine and didn’t get credit for. But don’t get Elaine started on the waitresses with a certain common trait there.

Double R Diner, “Twin Peaks”: FBI Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) embraced the simpler smalltown life of the titular Washington burg in which

but wish you could (maybe)

David Lynch’s hit early ‘90s supernatural mystery series was set, and he downed each slice of blueberry pie and “damn fine cup of coffee” he ordered at this eatery with gusto.

Vesuvio, “The Sopranos”: Upscale Italian food was on the menu of this classy New Jersey establishment where Tony (James Gandolfini) and his goons often dined, and owner Artie (John Ventimiglia) always made sure they were taken care of – that is, until it met with an unfortunate “accident.”

Bob’s Burgers, “Bob’s Burgers”: If cartoon fast food served in a scenic animated oceanfront setting is your thing, this family-owned New Jersey concern might be for you. But the humor and wit here are very real, as exemplified by the “Burger of the Day,” a running gag that gave comestibles clever names such as the “I’ve Created a Muenster Burger” and the “What’s The Worcestershire That Could Happen Burger.”

Luke’s Diner, “Gilmore Girls”: In addition to the food and drink served up at this establishment, diners here would often get a floor show, whether it was Luke (Scott Patterson) yelling at someone, swapping witticisms with Lorelei (Lauren Graham) or any one of dozens other scenarios. Life here was never dull.

Harrison Ford still keeps ‘The Fugitive’ running

If “The Fugitive” isn’t the best movie based on a television series, it sure is close. Not only does director Andrew Davis’ 1993 version of the drama – which AMC shows Saturday, April 15 – hold true to the basics of the original show, it expands on them sensationally, adding significant depth to wrongly accused Dr. Richard Kimble’s (Harrison Ford) perilous pursuit of the one-armed man (Andreas Katsulas) who killed his wife (Sela Ward).

David Janssen’s demeanor was halting and brooding as TV’s Kimble in the 1960s, and possibly in tribute to that, so is Ford’s variation on the character ... but the movie superstar has those qualities anyway, and they serve him well as Kimble remains determined to clear himself while desperately trying to evade the federal marshals led by Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones, who rightfully won an Oscar for the performance).

“Time to Swim” in performance is even more throbbing and ethereal than the original with its wailing voices. Alex Radakovich’s drums, now underscore the banjo, and electric guitar player Nico Slice has layered eerie tonal sounds to the mix, and even throws down a rap in the middle (which may or may not be included on the record). Aber Miller rounds out the lineup on keys and key bass.

The other song that has undergone a transformation is “Try as I Might Do.” Katelyn loves the song, calling it one of the best her twin, Laurie, has ever written. The song was released on a digital EP “thought of a b-side” in 2019, but didn’t get the love Katelyn believes it deserves. The recording featured only the twins. And while they may still perform as a duo on occasion, Shook Twins has evolved into something more. The new recording will reflect the growth of the band and its sound.

“Our folkiness is still embedded,” Katelyn said. “That’s our core, but we

have just a lot more electric, down-tempo electronica feeling in there too.”

To write, the sisters lean into isolation. Lately, this has meant holing up in a cabin in the forest around Mount Hood. Sometimes, a seed of a lyric will come on a walk and be drawn from

smartphone notes for writing sessions. Others, the song begins as a focus or a theme. Sometimes the words and music and concept come together all at once. Others, it comes in bits and must be pieced together.

“The songs just kind of

pop out of nowhere,” Katelyn said. “It’s really kind of a fascinating thing that happens when you sit down and say ‘okay’ and just ask the space ‘okay, I want to write a song’ and it downloads out of nowhere.”

Aside from the natural harmonies that siblings

may possess, the sisterly bond allows the twins to be blunt with each other on what directions they do and do not like within the writing process.

“We don’t have this dance you have to do of politeness,” Katelyn said.

They possess the same

taste and a shared understanding that they share a common goal — to make the best music possible.

“Sometimes a lyric that I don’t feel 100% about will stand out to me as I sing it, so that’s how I know that it’s not the right lyric,” she said “Or the melody doesn’t make me feel this, it’s a kind of euphoria I guess, just an overall pleasantness when you know that you’ve gotten it right. And we both have the same overall pleasantness.”

Katelyn hopes those feelings come through in live performances, where the band and the audience are able to be comfortable enjoying a moment together.

“Coming back from COVID, it feels definitely more potent when you come into a room and everyone is there experiencing one thing,” Katelyn said. “It’s more of an honor and we don’t take it for granted as much as we used to.”

Soto looks to make 2023 a big year in San Diego

If ever there was a player with something to prove in 2023, it’s Juan Soto.

After being acquired at last year’s trade deadline for a haul of prospects, the former Washington Nationals slugger proceeded to underwhelm in his first two-plus months with the San Diego Padres. In 52 games, the 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic batted .236 with six home runs, 16 RBIs, an on-base percentage of .388 and an OPS of .778. And in the postseason, it was more of same –.239, 2, 7, .314, .727. Not awful stats but certainly not those befitting a player widely considered to be a “generational talent” who is also seeking a nine-figure, multi-year contract.

So the pressure is on, not only for Soto to perform up to his career numbers and get his big payday but also for the Padres to lock up long term a superstar for whom they gave up so much.

For his part, Soto appears up to the challenge. Playing for the Dominican Republic in last month’s World Baseball Classic, the sweet-swinging lefty looked his usual self, batting .400 with a 1.500 OPS and two homers, one a monster 448-foot blast in the Dominican’s elimination loss to Puerto Rico.

He says a few tweaks to his swing have made all the difference.

“Mechanically, I was off last year, the whole year,” Soto said to a reporter. “I tried to find my mechanics, but I think I really found it again.”

Soto and the Padres can be seen in action twice this week on national television: Sunday, April 9, on ESPN, against the Atlanta Braves, and Tuesday, April 11, on ESPN, against the New York Mets.
