Fans prepared to wait in line for Record Store Day
RACHEL HERGETT
For the Chronicle
Last year, Cactus Records manager Dennis Miller showed up to the store at 8:30 a.m. for Record Store Day, an annual celebration of music and the independent record stores that foster a community of listeners. Despite the cold, a line had formed at the store’s new location on West Main Street. Eager shoppers had set up camp with coolers and lawn chairs and the atmosphere felt like a tailgate.
Snow is not in the forecast for this Saturday, the 16th annual Record Store Day, and customer Pat Smith is grateful. He lines up at Cactus Records each year. For the past couple years, his 15-year-old son James has joined him.
“I’m trying to get my daughter out there this year too,” Smith said. A lover of music, and especially the Grateful Dead, Smith talks fondly of friends he made as a kid at Plan 9 Music in Richmond, Virginia, and of his dismay when other stores he once
frequented shut down in the early 2000s.
He has made friends at Cactus too. Another customer, Zac Collins, said he has Smith’s contact saved in his phone as “Record Store Day Pat.” In addition to talking vinyl releases, Collins and Smith use the time in line to catch
up about their respective lives and families.
“It reminds me of waiting in line and buying Phish tickets,” Collins said on Tuesday, so willing to talk about his love for record stores that he called from a boat in the middle of the Missouri River. “ ere’s a little bit
of excitement in the air.”
Record stores are a little like y shops, Collins explained, minus the cigar smoke and black labs. His dad opened the rst y shop in Billings in 1976, and the store’s sense of community is something he sees mirrored in record stores.
“You’re always going to see someone you know,” he said.
Collins will be back from his river trip late Friday evening, and in line at Cactus by 5 a.m. the next morning, fueled by co ee and the promise of adding to his collection. With the kids out of the house, vinyl has become a means to connect with his wife. She may not be waiting in line, but the pair seek out “cool old record stores” in their travels, then come home and listen to their nds.
“It’s a thing we can do together,” Collins said.
Cactus opens at 9 a.m. for Record Store Day.

BY JAY BOBBINQ: How do you like depicting the work of forensic investigators on “CSI: Vegas”?
A: It’s amazing, like when we were doing the research for this, finding out how people can spend like three days in the bottom of a lab, just down in some DNA ... trying to figure out the stories of what happened to people’s loved ones. We’re on the amazing side of it, where we get to just sit and have like all the best of the best just at our beck and call (them) to be able to write a story about that.
For me, it’s hard to imagine (that at this) very second, there are people in the basements and the bowels of buildings doing this very thing that this show is talking about. (They) were in there last night, maybe got to work at 5:00 and maybe are on their second body or on their second tray of DNA. It really takes a lot just to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes like that.
Q: Are you enjoying playing the leader of the show’s CSI bureau?
A: I’m the youngest of three daughters, so it feels like vengeance on my sisters that I get to tell people what to do. My sisters always were the boss of me, so that’s nice.
It’s a fit. Women are very capable beings, you know. It’s just nice to be in the shoes of being able to step into that capability and, in so doing, set the example for other women and other people who want to step into that capability.

BY GEORGE DICKIEA book, a new home and a milestone for ‘Delicious Miss Brown’
It’s been an eventful past few months for Kardea Brown.
This past fall, she moved into her dream home on the South Carolina coast, where she recently completed filming the the eighth season of her Food Network series “Delicious Miss Brown” (which included its milestone 100th episode). Also that October, she released her first book, “The Way Home: A Celebration of Sea Islands Food and Family With Over 100 Recipes,” which quickly made its way onto the New York Times bestseller list.
Brown had been considering writing a book for the past four years but like with many things these days, the idea really got legs during the pandemic. After she was approached by an editor at Harper Collins to do a book in 2020, she found herself spending the next nearly two years developing and testing recipes, many of which were her interpretations of family recipes.
The final product is dedicated to the place where her love of food took hold, the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia, and those who taught her how to cook.
“I grew up in a family where my great-grandmother and my grandmother never wrote their
recipes down,” Brown explains. “And so I realized this is my opportunity to pay homage to my grandmother and my great-grandmother, and this is a place where some of their recipes and my interpretations of their recipes could live.
“And so that’s why I knew that once this opportunity came – and it did – that this cookbook would be based on that, and it would also give people a glimpse into who I am. You know, everyone knows ‘Delicious Miss Brown’ but I wanted people to see who Kardea Brown was as well.”
As for “Delicious Miss Brown,” now in its eighth season on Sunday afternoons, she’ll also be trying out a few ideas in her brand new kitchen.
“I’m kind of doing a lot of fusion food so I’m mixing some of my Lowcountry spin,” she explains. “I have an entire episode dedicated to Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine. We’re going to do an episode where I go horseback riding with a friend, and so we’re going to do like a (Kentucky) Derby theme. We are going to celebrate some of the holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. and so there’s going to be some brunch items on the menu.

‘Superman’ heads up, up and away on TCM
“You’ll believe a man can fly.” So said the ads for the 1978 screen version of “Superman,” and the phrase proved reasonably true. Turner Classic Movies presents the hugely entertaining film Sunday, April 23 – as part of the channel’s tribute to Warner Bros. on the studio’s 100th anniversary – and it made an immediate star of Christopher Reeve, who landed the central part (and made three sequels) after such names as Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen had been bandied about for it.
This really is three stories in one: the infant Kal-El’s early life in another world with father Jor-El (Marlon Brando); the youngster’s upbringing in Smallville; and the grown Superman’s battle with villainous Lex Luther (an amusing Gene Hackman). Margot Kidder is reporter Lois Lane in director Richard Donner’s terrific cast ... and if you’re looking for more superheroism afterward, 1989’s “Batman” follows this.
and KGVM for the event, which will include beer and pizza, ticket giveaways and more.
“It’s like a big party,” Miller said.
Live music starts around noon, with Michael Kirkwood, the Alex Robilotta Trio featuring Isaac Winemiller and Josh Poole, Steven Stephen and Filth & Foul in the lineup. The store closes at 7 p.m., “unless we’re still rockin,” Cactus Records owner Mike “Bueno” Good said.
Across town, The Wax Museum’s celebrations will be more subdued. Housed in a little house on East Mendenhall Street, the newer Bozeman record store is a solo operation for owner Kels Koch. The store is open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“I’m open and I’m ringing people up,” Koch said. “That’s about all I’m able to do because it’s just me. I can’t have bands and frisbee-throwing dogs in the front and burlesque performers and what not.”
Still, he has been doing what he can, receiving Record Store Day releases to offer to the customers. Koch doesn’t stream music and his deep love for vinyl is apparent.
“If you’re not holding it in your hand, you’re not having the complete experience,” Koch said. “There’s something tangible. And I think that there’s a cultural aspect to going to a record store.”
Koch, who grew up in Billings, gives a historical rundown of the town’s record shops before talking about the stores he worked at in Seattle, Austin and Nashville. When he moved back to Montana, he also helped out at Cactus Records before starting his own shop. He wants to spend his days in an atmosphere where people connect through music.
“Friendships can be born,”
Koch said. “Conversations can be had. Debates can be had. Fights can break out.”
Good has a similar outlook, proclaiming “Cactus is for everyone.” His favorite Record Store Day memories revolve around those connections,
especially when they involve young kids. He talks about a girl, no more than 5 years old, who proudly sported a Willie Nelson T-shirt one year. Or music writer Skip Anderson, who brought in his adorable toddler to buy her first vinyl record.
“Music fans just love to share their love of music with other music fans,” Good said. “That’s why I like to see the kids. That’s why I like Record Store Day.”
When customer Johnny Stevens thinks about record stores, he thinks of the rise of
rock and roll and the culture around it. He thinks about his love of vinyl and how happy he is that the medium has found new life.
“It’s great to see a new generation find record stores,” he said. “I’ve seen it come and go and come again.”

BY GEORGE DICKIE BY GEORGE DICKIEConforto seeks to recapture All-Star form with Giants
In the category of most intriguing offseason free agent signings, we present for your consideration Michael Conforto.
Indeed, the slugging outfielder with the sweet lefty swing was supposed to be a perennial All Star by now. But injuries and inconsistent play short-circuited his career with the New York Mets, who opted to let the Washington State native test the market following a poor 2021 season.
So now, the nine-year veteran is starting over. He spent all of 2022 as an unsigned free agent, recovering and rehabbing from shoulder surgery, then over the winter signed a twoyear, $36 million contract with the San Francisco Giants with the idea that he would be their starting left fielder.
Answers:
10) Troy Aikman
9) Edge Travon Walker was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars
8) Jay Berwanger (who -opt ed not to play in the NFL)
7) 1936
6) In 2017 Heisman winner Baker Mayfield was picked by the Cleveland Browns
5) Eric Fisher, an offensive tackle, was picked No. 1 by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013
4) Drew Bledsoe
3) Ki-Jana Carter in 1995
2) Alex Smith, Eli Manning, Carson Palmer, David Carr and Michael Vick
1) Quarterback
If he’s the player he was in his best years in New York, that will prove to be a bargain. He was an All Star in 2017, hit 34 homers in 2019 and was a middle-of-the-lineup force as recently as the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when he batted .322 with nine homers, a .412 on-base percentage and an OPS of .927 in 54 games. But a nightmarish 2021 of .232, 14, .344, .729 and a subsequent shoulder injury followed and Conforto was left to salvage his flagging career elsewhere.
Early returns have it that his comeback is on track. In the first two-plus weeks of preseason play, Conforto reports his throwing shoulder feels normal and that he could be moved to his usual haunt of right field, a position that requires a stronger arm, if needed. His swing also appears to be rounding into shape with three homers in his first seven games.
He’ll get a chance to show his old team they made a mistake when he and the Giants close out a four-game home series against the Mets Sunday, April 23, on ESPN.
