Kids are encouraged to live in colorful, imaginative worlds. Creativity abounds and art seems to ow freely from their little ngers. Yet, somehow, as we grow up, we can lose that part of ourselves.
Enter Studio Wheelhouse, an open studio and creative gathering place born from a simple idea: We are all creatives. As such, we deserve a space to allow that part of ourselves to shine and meet others who feel the same. We deserve a space to hone our creative skills and to dig into new ones.
“People are really scared of the word ‘artist.’ ey’re really scared of the word ‘creator.’ ey don’t feel like they can own that,” said co-founder and illustrator Grace Washko. “We wanted to build a space where people can own those words and share their skills.”

“Movie: Point Break”
Young FBI recruit Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) goes under cover to infiltrate a gang of extreme athletes — including surfer and eco-warrior Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez) — who performs daredevil heists in this 2015 makeover of a 1991 action movie blockbuster that featured iconic performances by Patrick Swayze (as Bodhi) and Keanu Reeves (as Johnny).
MAY 17
“Movie: Ford v Ferrari”
James Mangold’s 2019 sports drama emerged as one of that year’s winners from every perspective, earning big bucks at the global box office, cheers from critics and multiple accolades, including an Oscar nomination for best picture and wins in two editing categories. Matt Damon and Christian Bale head the cast as, respectively, automotive designer Carroll Shelby and British driver Ken Miles, leaders of an American team determined to build a new racing car that can break the Ferrari winning streak at Le Mans. Jon Bernthal also stars.
MAY 19
“Movie: White Men Can’t Jump”
This modern remix of the iconic 1992 comedy follows the adventures of two polar-opposite Los Angeles street ballers: Jeremy (rapper Jack Harlow in his feature film debut), a former star of the game whose injuries stalled his career; and Kamal (Sinqua Walls, “American Soul”), once a promising player who derailed his own future in the sport. (ORIGINAL) Premiere
“Movie: Sophie’s Choice”
Meryl Streep stars as a young Polish refugee with a mysterious past as a concentration camp prisoner. Alan J. Pakula wrote and directed this 1982 film, set in postwar New York and based on the novel by William Styron. Streep won an Oscar and the New York Film Critics Circle award for her performance as Sophie. Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol also star.

BY JAY BOBBINQ: In the series version of “Fatal Attraction,” it’s incumbent on you and Joshua Jackson to portray a marriage that infidelity could disrupt deeply. Did you know his work previously?
A: I had tried to work with Josh many times. The two of us had tried to do a romantic comedy, and wouldn’t you know this is this thing where we finally got to work together? I think he’s brilliant, so I was really excited to do this with him.
Q: You’ve generated some of your own work in recent years, such as co-creating and co-writing the Netflix series “The Chair.” Can you describe the appeal for you in doing that?
A: It’s a great joy to be able to sit down and work without waiting for my agent to call me and say, “We have an audition!” As many people have said before me, there’s a whole aspect of being an actor that’s a little bit like having a terrible boyfriend.
Q: Being married to former “Game of Thrones” show-runner David Benioff, do you bounce your own creative ideas off of him?
A: Yes, and I hope this doesn’t sound too corny, but I consider him a mentor. I had thought about going back to school, to get the kind of critiques in class when you’re a writer – but instead, I had my husband, and also D.B. Weiss (also of “Game of Thrones”) and D.B.‘s wife, Andrea Troyer (also of “The Chair”). We have a little writers’ group, and that’s not always pleasant, but it’s necessary.

“Movie: Ticket to Paradise”
George Clooney and Julia Roberts bring their considerable onscreen charisma to this otherwise lightweight 2022 romantic comedy in which they star as David and Georgia Cotton, a bickering divorced couple who travel to Bali to keep their soon-to-wed daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever, “Dopesick”) from making the same mistake they made 25 years earlier. Billie Lourd (“American Horror Story”) also stars.
“Movie: Crazy Love”
Dan Klores (“Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story”) co-directed (with Fisher Stevens) and wrote this 2007 documentary that examines the case of Burt Pugach, a married New York lawyer whose obsession with much-younger Linda Riss eventually led to a horrific act for which he spent 14 years in prison.
“Movie: I Melt With You”
The past becomes the present for several pals from college — played by Thomas Jane (”Hung”), Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) and Christian McKay — in this 2011 drama. During their annual get-together, they dredge up an agreement they made in their younger days, and their effort to fulfill it takes surprising and unfortunate turns. Co-stars include Carla Gugino, Arielle Kebbel, Melora Hardin (“The Office”) and Sasha Grey.

“Primo”
Shea Serrano (“Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America”) created this coming-of-age comedy inspired by his own life growing up in San Antonio, Texas, that follows 16-year-old Rafa as he navigates life with a clever mom and five overbearing uncles as well as the confluence of three major life events — graduating high school, first love and the prospect of college. Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Johnny Rey Diaz star.

BY GEORGE DICKIEAs she’s being served breakfast in bed this Sunday, Mom will have a full morning’s worth of Mother’s Day-related culinary programming to take in on Food Network.
The May 14 lineup kicks off bright and early with “Girl Meets Farm,” which finds host Molly Yeh celebrating Mother’s Day with a tea party and a menu of rose cupcake cones, savory hot dog flower buns, ham and cheese sandwiches on sour cream and chive scones and fairy toast with marzipan butter and homemade sprinkles.
Then on “Valerie’s Home Cooking,” Ms. Bertinelli practices a little self-care for Mother’s Day by inviting over friend and actress Angela Kinsey (“The Office”) for a decadent meal of roasted cod with cashew coconut lime topping, tangy quick collards and a tomato and cucumber salad with cumin vinaigrette. And for dessert, she serves up a citrus upside-down cake. We’re still waiting for our invitation.
A little later on “The Pioneer Woman,” Ree Drummond is enjoying a little pampering. While she’s out for the afternoon, the boys are in the kitchen preparing filet steaks with shrimp peppercorn sauce, along with ranch-style oven potatoes and roasted asparagus. But she’s not out of the kitchen entirely as she makes an Italian chicken
soup and some homemade cherry pie. Yum!
Then immediately following, Drummond is back to share some ideas for a special lunch just for Mom. In this case, it starts with grilled chicken lettuce wraps with Italian-style filling, accompanied by a colorful grain salad. For dessert, she makes dark chocolate espresso sundaes, washed down with blood orange and basil wine spritzers.
At midday, Kardea Brown hosts a Mother’s Day lunch for some childhood best friends on “Delicious Miss Brown.” On the menu is a scalloped potato-stuffed chicken with a sugar snap pea Salad with roasted grapes. Then for dessert, there is a lemon meringue pie with shortbread cookie crust, tart lemon filling and pillowy meringue. And let’s not forget the strawberry rose daiquiri, a frozen cocktail made from sparkling rose, rum and strawberries.
And in the afternoon, head to “The Kitchen,” where the chefs are celebrating their mothers with recipes inspired by them. So for Geoffrey Zakarian, that means making savory lamb sliders with a rose elderflower sangria. Meanwhile, Jeff Mauro prepares a shrimp and pea pasta, Alex Guarnaschelli skews up her fresh griddled flatbread and Katie Lee Biegel shares her grandmother’s award-winning angel food cake recipe.

If you know the movie significance of having a golden ticket, you’re likely a member of one of the generations that have embraced “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” over the years. Freeform shows the fanciful 1971 musical-fantasy Tuesday, May 16, with Gene Wilder in one of his most memorable roles as the intriguing proprietor of a literal candy land to which young Charlie (Peter Ostrum) and his grandfather (Jack Albertson) are among those granted rare entry.
Hollywood has revisited the Roald Dahl story since, but there’s a special magic to the original film that’s hard to recapture. A big part of that is the wonderful Leslie Bricusse-Anthony Newley song contribution that includes “The Candy Man,” which became a huge and enduring hit for Sammy Davis Jr. (who wanted to be a physical presence in the picture, but its makers resisted using such an icon who might break the fantasy for viewers).

ough the three founders have been discussing the idea for about a year, the project came together rapidly after they signed a lease at the end of February. Open studio hours are slated to start next week. e plan is to host daily studio hours from 12 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. for $10 a session. is would allow for time outside of normal 9-to-5 work schedules as well as open up mornings for those who may want to use the whole space.
Grace’s sister Sarah Washko, a stained glass artist and co-founder, is teaching Wheelhouse’s rst class this weekend. More classes and lectures are planned.
“People don’t have to be artists to be here, or think of themselves as artists,” Sarah said. “Anybody can learn these skills and have fun doing it. So why not give it a try?”
Future ideas include art materials exchanges and collaborations with other artsbased organizations, like Drink and Draw and Random Acts of Silliness.
“We’re talking with all these other people who are creating things and community in Bozeman and we want to literally give them space,” Grace said.
Bozeman’s art scene continues to grow, said co-founder and designer Erin Corsi, pointing to organizations like Tinworks and Mountain Time Arts. Yet those mainly provide access to work.
“A lot of those are more for viewing and interfacing with art, rather than artists interfacing with each other,” she said. “I wanted to be part of creating with that community.”
Studio Wheelhouse feels like a creative space. Even un nished, it’s bright and colorful, airy and comforting. A rainbow doormat greets people at the entrance, a beacon that brands Studio Wheelhouse as a safe space. e
founders are working hard to make it inclusive and accessible for all.
“ is is a space for everyone,” Sarah said. “ is is a space for people who wear Carhartts. is is a space for people who are gender uid. It’s a place for people who just want to dip their toes in and learn.”
Inside the front door, a room will provide space for brainstorming sessions and artist talks.
Beyond that is the main studio space, both cavernous and inviting. Large work tables in the
center provide surface area to create. Backdrops and lighting for photography have a home on one wall.
“We’re thinking about people nding connection with each other, casting a wide net so that you have di erent perspectives and di erent voices, di erent skills and di erent styles of creation,” Corsi said. “ at’s what makes this space cool, to have room to come together and be inspired by each other and challenge each other in di erent ways.”
ere’s a comfortable seating
available for designers or writers on laptops.
“ at cross pollination is huge,” Grace said. “Working alongside another person and being inspired by what they’re doing makes more interesting work.”
e room is anchored by a colorful mural, painted with the help of community members a few weeks ago. Grace and Sarah both apprenticed with Chicano muralist Jimmy Longoria in Minnesota, who taught them that a mural by nature is public art. It should be about community and people’s hands should be a part of its creation.
“ e mural is a culmination of a skill and a craft that is very important to us and also embodies what we want to do here,” Grace said.
On the wall of the studio, surrounded by various people and di erent versions of Studio Wheelhouse’s asterisk logo known as their “spokesperson,” block letters proclaim “It’s in your wheelhouse” and serve as a reminder to own your own creativity.
“If you go up to that wall, you’ll see squiggles and dashes and stars and swirls,” Grace said. “People were inspired to leave their own mark.”
Other murals cover the bathroom walls and the back wall and ceiling of the o ce. More are in progress.

e founders are determined to build Studio Wheelhouse organically, responding to the needs of the creatives in the community. What Studio Wheelhouse becomes will be up to those who use it.

BY GEORGE DICKIE playerprofileIn the category of young players to watch out for in 2023, we present for your consideration Nolan Gorman.
Indeed, in their 23-year-old second baseman/designated hitter, the St. Louis Cardinals look like they have a bona fide power bat to serve as a lefty-swinging complement to their slugging righty superstars Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado.
Through 19 April games, the Phoenix native was hitting .316 with five home runs, 16 RBIs, an on-base percentage of .403 and an OPS of 1.052. His season highlight so far came on April 19, when he came off the bench to pinch-hit a grand slam homer at Busch Stadium in the Cards’ 14-5 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks. At 6 feet 1 inch and 210 pounds, Gorman has the size and powerful lefty swing that any team would love in a young slugger. And this season, he’s improved on his tendencies to chase balls out of the strike zone, resulting in an increase in his walk rate (13.4 percent in 2023 versus 9 percent in his rookie campaign last year) and a decrease in his strikeout rate (23.9 percent versus 32.9 percent).
Of course, all this comes with the caveat that “it’s still early” and his numbers will certainly come back to earth. But at this point, Gorman appears to be a player with a bright future ahead of him.
Gorman and the Cardinals can be seen on national TV Sunday May 14, when they close out a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in a contest airing on ESPN.
