BAM celebrates birthday with new exhibit

New exhibit to help BAM mark three years

Bozeman Art Museum opened on Jan. 3, 2020, in a row of businesses at 2612 W. Main St. that also includes Distinctive Lighting and the Frugal Frame Shop.

So when “The Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature” exhibit debuts at BAM on Jan. 3, it will be more than the first show of the new year — it will be a birthday celebration for the small museum with big aspirations.

“Look at the Museum of the Rockies,” Linda Williams, BAM’s executive director, said in an interview at the museum on Monday. “It was in a quonset hut for years. Yeah, we’re in a strip mall, but not forever.”

Williams has spent the last decade slowly bringing her vision of a nonprofit Bozeman Art Museum to life.

“I just love art,” she said. “It’s such a powerful component to a well-rounded life.”

Ten years ago, Williams was already nearing retirement age. Her four children were grown up and had lives of their own. She could do anything. And when she looked around Bozeman — a place she loves for its plethora of art and artists — she was dismayed that the town didn’t have a museum to celebrate them.

“Holy cow, there’s two in Missoula,” she remembers thinking. “Miles City has one and we don’t.”

Williams took a plan to the Bozeman City Commission outlining how she would

turn the Story Mansion into a museum. The commission listened to her 10-minute spiel, but questioned if Williams had the credentials to pull it off. At the time, Williams had a bachelor’s of fine arts degree, wrote for art magazines and judged art shows. And if that wasn’t enough, she wasn’t deterred.

“The next day I started looking for a master’s program,” she said.

The Bozeman Art Museum’s current exhibit space is around 900 square feet. Classes are held in the museum’s back room, where pieces from the permanent collection hang above industrial shelves of supplies. The space can fit about a dozen people, Williams said, so some classes are held in larger rented spaces. BAM also hosts artist lectures at larger venues and partners with schools to bring art

“The Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature” exhibit, pictured during the installation process on Dec. 26, opens at the Bozeman Art Museum on Jan. 3, 2023, the museum’s third birthday.

to elementary classrooms.

When the pandemic shut down the gallery space, Williams went to work writing grants. Some have helped create a video series, 406 Masters, that highlights local artists. Some are operational. Others are working toward a grand vision — a modern museum located on 10 acres of land that would allow for ample exhibit and performing space, a sculpture garden and plenty of parking.

“I think this is an important thing,” Williams said. “I may never see the big building, but it’s the kind of thing the community needs and there’s no limit to what you can do with it.”

“I’ve survived a heart attack, a bear attack, and a cyber attack.”

A life well lived should continue at home. Home Instead® offers customized services, from personal care to memory care, so older adults can stay safe at home.

As new episodes of “The Chase” begin airing, do you feel your comfort level as host of the game has increased greatly?

I always say that when I learn something, I have to learn the way it’s been done before I can shake it up and make it my own. It does take me a minute to feel like I’ve gotten down the basic rules of what it should look like, and I feel this season allows me to elbow my own space out and make it mine.

Does that comfort level extend to your relationships with the newest trivia experts, if Chasers, to join the show?

Well, they came in so excited to be part of the show, and they’re all perfectionists. They judge themselves very much on whether they win or lose, and they take it very personally.

Remedies to get you out from under the weather

Welcome to the new year, a time for hope, new beginnings, breaking bad habits and making good on resolutions. But first, you’ve got a hangover to deal with.

Yes, nothing says “Happy new year!” quite like the nausea, fatigue, splitting headache and extreme dehydration that come in the aftermath of being overserved. But how to put it in your past quickly and painlessly, well, there are numerous theories and solutions, some more repellant – and entertaining –than others. A few are detailed here.

Sean Evans tries out a few on “Sean in the Wild” (www.youtube.com/watch?vdMf8UEI067g), in which he’s joined by comedian Bert Kreischer to experience such international remedies as pickle juice (from Eastern Europe), tripe with red chili peppers (Mexico), pickled herring (Germany) and something called prairie oysters (U.S.), a concoction of Worcestershire sauce, tomato juice, vinegar, hot sauce, salt, pepper and a raw egg. Evans explains there is solid science behind that last one but it also just might be a case of the cure being worse than the malady.

A remedy from our neighbors to the north gets put to the test in GQ Hangover Lab’s “Does Canada Have the Ultimate Hangover Cure?” (www.youtube.com/watch?vN7Rvjvw8xaw), in which the French-Canadian comfort food poutine – French fries, cheese curd and gravy – is fed to a man who claimed to have 20 whiskeys the night before. The result? Blood pressure and

sugar are normalized, motor skills are improved and the subject is clearly feeling better. A more delicious way of killing a hangover there never was.

Carbohydrates are also part of USA Today Life’s “Hangover Remedies: 5 Easy Tips to Recover Faster” (www.youtube.com/ watch?vkweq4720g08), which also include hydrating, pain relievers (except acetaminophen), B vitamins and zinc and the time-honored favorite, the hair of the dog, which really just delays the inevitable. Some are more successful than others.

For a more medicinal approach, check out “Bachelorette Weekend on CMT: The Greatest Hangover Cure, IV Therapy (www.youtube.com/watch?vaZijmEo6vvo), in which a baker’s dozen sick-as-a-dog bachelorettes are hooked up to hydration bags filled with fluids and minerals to replace what was lost while imbibing. How did it do? Well, let’s just say that that and puppy therapy worked wonders.

Then, of course, there is the school of thought that hangover cures are nothing more than smoke and mirrors, as is argued in Doctor ER’s “5 Hangover Cures That Are MYTHS!” (www. youtube.com/watch?vPiHYKl7g7UA). Here, Dr. Jordan Wagner posits that such popular hangover prevention measures as drinking liquor before beer, downing pain relievers or sports drinks before bed and just sleeping it off are pure hogwash. His recommendation: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate before, during and after. And a eat banana to help restore potassium levels.

‘The Honeymooners’ helps greet 2023

MeTV has made a tradition out of starting a new year with a festival of first episodes of classic series, and it holds to tradition by launching 2023 in that fashion on Sunday, Jan. 1. First up is “The Honeymooners,” with an episode rather appropriately titled “TV or Not TV,” in which neighbors and pals Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) and Ed Norton (Art Carney) supposedly solve the subtitle’s quandary by deciding to go in together on a new television set ... but then can’t agree on what to watch. Audrey Meadows and Joyce Randolph play wives Alice and Trixie.

An interesting thing about “The Honeymooners”: Even though it’s regarded as one of the most classic sitcoms, only 39 episodes were made of the original version. That really isn’t a lot when one considers a show of its status, though later tales of Ralph, Ed and their wives were made for Gleason’s variety series.

Until the grand vision comes together, however, the museum is making the most of its space.

“The Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature” features pieces spanning nearly 100 years, all of which were produced for publications like books and magazines. They have graced covers of pulp magazines such as Science Fiction Stories, Weird Tales, Fantastic Adventures and Planet Stories from the 1920s to 1960s.

The 68-work collection is mainly organized chronologically around the gallery, starting in the back left corner in the 1800s, with works such as a 1864 piece by French artist Gustave Doré depicting the title character from “Don Quixote” meeting a giant spider at the entrance to the Garden of Dulcinea, or a pen and ink drawing of a woman and a faun playing music by British illustrator Aubrey Beardsley, originally published in “Le Morte D’Arthur” by Thomas Malory in 1894.

“Any collection is an intellectual exercise in organizing tangible items into a set. It is a manifestation of the collector’s vision of the field,” the late Stephen Korshak stated in a prospectus for the exhibit. “This collection is a vision of the fantastic. It is one of great illustrators as well as illustrations that had a great influence on imaginative literature.”

“The Korshak Collection” includes such fantasy masters as Frank R. Paul, whose style defined early science fiction pulps; James Allen St. John, who is best known for his illustrations of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan novels; and Frank Frazetta, who the Norman Rockwell Museum’s Illustration History website calls “one of the pioneers of modern fantasy illustration.”

“It’s going to blow some kids’ minds. It really is,” Williams said. “I had never seen an original Frazetta before this show. You don’t see them in museums because they are

illustrations. It’s a different genre, but it’s a genre I like.”

One section of the gallery wall focuses on Virgil Finlay, tracing the evolution of this art over 20 years through a series of drawings and paintings. At the front of the gallery, a television will show an hour-long documentary about the history of illustration and fantasy art. Some of the original publications that featured the art will find a home in the center of the space.

“I’ve been trying for years to get this show,” Williams said. “There’s something for everybody. If you like older work, there’s older artwork. If you like crazy Conan the Barbarian stuff, we got it. And we got the best of the best. The guy really put together an amazing collection. It’s quite spectacular.”

The Bozeman Art Museum is closed until “The Korshak Collection” opening on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Regular museum hours resume Wednesday, Jan. 4, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free For more information, visit https:// bozemanartmuseum.org and www. korshakcollection.com.

Burrow gets hot as Bengals drive for playoffs

In the conversation for 2022 NFL MVP, we present for your consideration Joe Burrow.

Indeed, in their third year quarterback, the Cincinnati Bengals have a field general with a rifle arm, uncanny instincts and the ability to lead a team to a Super Bowl berth, as he did last season. And with the Bengals on a roll and headed for the postseason once again, he may get that chance to avenge the team’s 23-20 loss to the Rams in Super Bowl LVI.

Through the first 12 games of 2022, Burrow’s numbers have been stellar, as he hit on 304 of 440 passes (a 69.1 completion percentage) for 3,446 yards (second in the NFL) and 25 touchdowns (tied for second) against only eight interceptions (tied for second-fewest among starters). His 103.7 quarterback rating ranks him fifth in the league.

But beyond the stats, he’s also proven himself a clutch performer, as he did in Week 13 against the Kansas Chiefs. With the Bengals down 24-17 entering the fourth quarter, Burrow hit on nine of 11 passes for 80 yards, including an eight-yard strike to Chris Evans with 3:19 to play that proved to be the game winner. And when the Bengals got the ball back leading 27-24, he engineered a clock-killing drive in which he went three for three and converted two third downs.

That effort won Burrow his fourth career AFC Offensive Player of the Week award. And if his play continues at such a high level in the closing weeks of the 2022 season, more laurels are certain to come.

Burrow and the Bengals can be seen in action Monday, Jan. 2, when they play host to the Buffalo Bills in what could be a preview of the AFC Championship airing on ABC and ESPN.
