Hat painter turns to nature for inspiration

When Miranda Seim thinks of wild owers, she thinks of resilience. Flowers can grow in inhospitable altitudes, push through snow, bloom in drought. ey are trampled by wildlife, thrashed by nature and yet they survive.

“You see them and think they’re so beautiful and so fragile, but they’re not,” the artist said during an interview in her light and plant- lled Bozeman home on a spring morning. “ ey’re strong and colorful and kind of magical.”

A pen and ink drawing of an Indian paintbrush serves as the logo for her business, Ruminant Hat Co., and owers such as cosmos, bluebells and her latest favorite, California poppies, ll her work. Seim’s creativity is challenged trying to capture the movement in the poppy petals on a medium that demands a somewhat heavy hand. For the last year, she has

been painting on wide-brimmed hats out of wool or a wool-cashmere blend. What was once just a hat now features an explosion of owers peeking from below the rim, or adding an additional crown to the crown. Each piece is unique and made to last, at home on the wearer or on a wall.

“Painting on bers is not a smooth process,” she said. “It’s a little bit sticky, a little bit tricky so you end up using a lot of paint.”

While felt painting makes detail work di cult, Seim seems to lean into juxtapositions. She likes the delicacy contrasting the di culty. She likes how

hats that can be associated with the hard work of ranchers and cowboys and cowgirls can also be pieces of art.

“It’s a beautiful narrative on the West and where we are and the nature that inspires me,” she said.

Seim is a bundle of energy, so it’s easy to picture when she describes juggling wet paint brushes, her adorably impatient dog Duck at her heels wanting to be let out. Errant marks happen. Seim has learned to work with them — a slash may be a stem, a dot a new ower.

Rice OF THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME ON APPLE TV+

Q: How is it stepping into the mindset of a character whose world suddenly doesn’t make sense?

A: It’s hard. It’s really hard because it’s hard to imagine. But I think for Bailey in each episode, she comes in with a question like what if this is the answer, what if this is the answer? I think she’s searching for answers all the time (about her father’s disappearance) and she’s trying to grasp onto anything that will stay still for long enough. So I think throughout the show stepping into that mindset, it was so about her anxiety of being in the unknown. It’s not even a fear of the unknown, it’s being in it and that is where the anxiety is coming from.

Q: So was there a coming down from this character when filming wrapped?

celebrity
A: You know, it’s so strange. It was really hard to say goodbye to her. I really became so close with the story and the characters and I’ve never worked on something that took that long to film, so we were really in it for such a long time. And then just recently, I was at work and someone called out “Bailey!” And I looked up and I was like, “Yes?” But they weren’t talking to me, obviously; they were talking to someone who’s actually called Bailey. But I was still – I don’t know, that name was still living somewhere in my brain as an identifier for me. I was ready, I was like “Yes?” So I thought that I’d kind of let her go but maybe I haven’t. Maybe there’s still some of that left. Friday, a pril 28, 2023 | Ruckus 5 Each Home Instead® office is an independently owned and operated franchise of Home Instead, Inc., an Honor Company.

“Movie: Bigger, Stronger, Faster”

In the style of Morgan Spurlock and Michael Moore, filmmaker Christopher Bell explores the world of performance-enhancing drugs, starting with himself and his two brothers — he no longer uses them, but they do. The film doesn’t come out strongly for or against steroid use but does make a poignant point on how necessary it seems to have become in a culture obsessed with winning.

“Movie: Syrup”

Based on Max Barry’s novel, director Aram Rappaport’s (“Innocent”) 2013 comedy stars Shiloh Fernandez (“Evil Dead”) as Scat, a low-level marketing worker who comes up with a surefire idea for an energy drink but needs the help of brainy co-worker Six (Amber Heard, “Aquaman”) to keep it a secret from corporate spies. Kellan Lutz and Brittany Snow also star.

“Movie: I Melt With You”

The past becomes the present for several pals from college — played by Thomas Jane (”Hung”), Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) and Christian McKay — in this 2011 drama. During their annual get-together, they dredge up an agreement they made in their younger days, and their effort to fulfill it takes surprising and unfortunate turns. Co-stars include Carla Gugino, Arielle Kebbel, Melora Hardin (“The Office”) and Sasha Grey.

“Movie: Happy, Happy”

From Norway comes this 2010 comedy that follows Kaja (Agnes Kittelsen, “Kon-Tiki”), an outwardly joyful schoolteacher in a struggling marriage who is overjoyed when a seemingly perfect couple and their adopted Ethiopian child move in next door. Joachim Rafaelsen, Maibritt Saerens and Henrik Rafaelsen are also in director Anne Sewitsky’s (“Totally True Love”) cast.

Exploring immigrant cultures and cuisines on ‘Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi’

Padma Lakshmi believes food is a great vehicle to get to know other cultures. And in Season 2 of “Taste the Nation,” she explores more immigrant communities and their cuisines and addresses a few serious subjects along the way.

Premiering Friday, May 5, on Hulu, the sophomore round brings the award-winning cookbook author and presenter to more locales across the U.S. to visit the diverse communities that have shaped what American food is today.

So in the 10 episodes, she goes to Washington D.C., where she joins the Afghan community as they welcome new arrivals in the wake of the war in their homeland; Appalachia, where she discovers new recipes and ingredients and tries her hand at playing the banjo; and Lowell, Mass., home to an enterprising Cambodian community that has revitalized a once-decaying town.

In Friday’s opener, Lakshmi visits Puerto Rico, where there is disagreement over whether the beloved local dish pasteles should be eaten with or without ketchup. In the process, she learns that mid-20th century industrialization by American companies resulted in the decline of agriculture on the island, thus making it difficult to find locally grown produce.

So much of what is sold in markets in Puerto Rico today comes from places like Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. mainland.

“It’s so sad,” Lakshmi says. “And the thing is Puerto Ricans should have sovereignty over what happens to them and their land and they don’t because they’re really a colony of the United States. We don’t call it a colony; we call it a territory but it’s the same thing.

“It’s because of this ancient, 100-year-old shipping law called the Jones Act,” she continues. “And that law was made not to help Puerto Ricans or even American farmers; it was made to help American corporations. And we’re in the predicament we’re in now and we like to think of ourselves as so evolved but this is something that is still an issue. And I don’t think a lot of people know it.”

Born in India but raised in New York, Lakshmi is an immigrant herself. So she hopes this show can familiarize viewers with cuisines and cultures they might otherwise consider alien.

“At the end of the day, we are all interconnected on this planet,” she says. “I don’t care how much we want to isolate ourselves, we are interconnected. COVID taught us that. And so maybe if people can’t travel themselves, maybe they can travel with their forks, maybe they can travel with this show.

“And this show wasn’t really designed for people who think like me,” she continues. “It was designed for people who don’t think like me and who are maybe afraid of immigrants coming to this country. That’s who the show is designed for.”

How television’s ‘Batman’ began

For one of the most popular and trendsetting series of the 1960s, “Batman,” it all started with the episode “Hi Diddle Riddle” ... which MeTV presents Saturday, May 6. At the time, ABC didn’t know quite what it had, given the superhero saga’s somewhat campy approach and its formatting that split stories into halves airing on consecutive nights. However, the straight-faced approach of Adam West and Burt Ward as Gotham City protectors Batman and Robin (and their aliases, wealthy Bruce Wayne and his ward Dick Grayson) caught on with audiences quickly.

Frank Gorshin set the pace for the show’s rotating cast of villains as the very limber, maniacally gleeful Riddler, who taunts the Dynamic Duo with cryptic clues – and eventually captures Robin, with the help of his appropriately named moll Molly. Some bigname guest casting was involved there, since Jill St. John played that part.

“Painting things from nature, you start to learn that the imperfections are the perfections, in a way,” Seim said. “Now it’s more of something to embrace.”

Looking around, Seim said she feels proud of turning something she loved into a business. She moved to Bozeman nine years ago to study at Montana State University, dual majoring in psychology and art. School could be challenging at times, and Seim found a refuge in the art studios. It was still a challenge, but the creative nature of the challenge also made it exciting. And fun.

Two years before she graduated, Seim started volunteering for Bozeman Youth Empowerment Project. e organization that builds life skills in vulnerable teens o ered Seim a job as a program manager before her graduation. But after three years of working full time, and busier than ever through pandemic lockdowns, she needed a real break. e plan was to take a winter o to ski with her boyfriend, but she never went back.

“ e nature of my job was allconsuming,” Seim said. “Coming out of that, I want to prioritize time and friendships and experiencing the world.”

In her youth, Seim was encouraged to explore “creative spaces,” painting included.

She credits her mother, who “very intentionally” sent her to a Waldorf School in Boulder, Colorado, an hour drive from their home in Fort Collins.

e educational method incorporates art into all subjects, as a means to increase aptitude and creative thinking, according to the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.

In college, Seim had also started making and sporting ve-panel hats, low-slung baseball caps with a printed patch sewn on the front. Tired

of logo-emblazoned options, or “feminine” choices that seemed to feature a whole lot of pinks and purples, she decided to make her own. e example Seim shows o at her dining room table features the Indian paintbrush logo patch on an olive green hat. It’s a modest design, and exactly what Seim wanted.

“I love looking at the relationship between the nature and the feminine,” Seim said.

ough she made the rst ve-panel for herself, gifts to friends followed. Eventually, one was spotted by alternative process photographer and artist Kelly Swanson, of KSX Art. Swanson’s backyard art markets were exactly the push that Seim needed.

“I was able to dive back into creativity,” Seim said. “I had the time and the space and now the

hats had more room to play with — quite literally.

Seim said, “I want to paint bigger,” like it’s still a mission. An un nished painting sits on an easel in a corner of her studio, a bandanna print in the making. She’s diving back into other mediums, nding wonder in the ease of painting on canvas as opposed to wool and looking at expanding her designs to other textiles.

“I love the idea of wearable art,” Seim said.

Instead of fast fashion, Seim would like to slow things down. In doing so, her process has become more personal. She connects with her patrons by nature of the medium.

“Now I’m painting directly onto the thing that someone will be wearing,” Seim said.

Nimmo sets the table with a smile for the Mets

It wasn’t that long ago that Brandon Nimmo was looked upon in some corners as a fourth outfielder. Critics argued that his .260 batting average and below grade defense in center field made him nothing but a back-up with a big grin.

But with an adjustment in positioning in 2022 and the growing realization that leadoff hitters with pop and a lifetime on-base percentage of .385 don’t grow on trees, Nimmo became an attractive commodity on last winter’s free agent market. The New York Mets ponied up, resigning him to an eight-year, $162 million contract. And now it’s time for the affable Wyoming native to live up to it. He was solid in his walk year in ‘22, batting .274 with 16 home runs, 71 walks, 102 runs scored, an on-base percentage of .367 and an OPS of an even .800.

But arguably his most memorable moment of the season came on defense. In the Mets’ home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 31, Nimmo’s leap at the fence to haul in a would-be Justin Turner home run preserved an important victory against a possible playoff opponent and caused the Citi Field faithful to erupt in hysterics. Caught up in the moment, Nimmo thrust his fist in the air, his smile wider than ever.

As 2023 gets going, it seems the only thing that might hold Nimmo back is injury. He missed significant time in 2019 and 2021 but the Mets are betting his full 2022 campaign will be more representative of his reliability going forward.
