‘CIRCUS PERMACULTURE’
RACHEL HERGETT
For the Chronicle
ree brightly colored balls — pink, red and teal, each around 2 feet in diameter — are on gym mats in the center of the performance hall at Petra Academy on Monday afternoon. ey look like exercise balls, and one may mistake this for any tness-based summer day camp… except for the kid standing on top of each ball, slowly walking around each other in an
impressive display of balance. is is circus camp. Various unicycles are stashed in the corner, with riders occasionally picking them up to practice stopping and starting, turns or even juggling while atop the seat.
Campers gather around the folding table where they try to replicate the
modern clown makeup demonstrated by camp leader and 406Cirque founder Paúl Gomex. On stage, swings and silks beg for budding aerialists to work on their skills, gently reminded by Gomex to stretch rst.
e campers rehearsed their upcoming Sweet Pea Festival performance in the morning. e afternoon was all about allowing each to explore di erent facets of the circus arts.
“I call this circus permaculture,” Gomex said, using a land management
term for planting in harmony with the natural ecosystem. “It looks like a mess, but they are all very focused, fully concentrated and nding their avenue.”
e modern circus may still have a ying trapeze, juggling and clowning, but it is also about the individual ability to combine elements into something uniquely amazing, such as tap dancing in ice skates.

BY JAY BOBBINOF THE $100,000 PYRAMID, GOOD MORNING AMERICA ON ABC
Note: This interview took place before the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.
Q: With all of your other activities, including your weekday co-host role on “Good Morning America,” how much of a time commitment is hosting “The $100,000 Pyramid” for you?
A: It’s a lot of work. We shot this whole season in four or five days, and it was just as much fun as ever, but we’re doing six shows a day. The great thing is that the energy is always high, and the enthusiasm is there in each show.
We have a great crew and great celebrities, so if everyone comes in with the right attitude, it flies by. You suddenly look up and say, “Oh! We’re done for the day?” Granted, that’s at 8 or 9 at night, but you just don’t realize it because everybody’s having a good time.
Q: “The $100,000 Pyramid” typically is a summer show for ABC, but has there been any discussion with you of it airing during the regular television season?
A: We still have some episodes from last year that have not aired, on top of the ones we’ve done this year, so we do have enough that we could put the show on then.

Dinner for two: ‘Love at First Bite’ tosses singles into culinary bootcamp
Premiering with a larger-than-life, 90-minute episode, “Worst Cooks in America: Love at First Bite” chomps down on Food Network, Sunday, Aug. 6.
The eight-episode season brings chefs Anne Burrell (“Beat Bobby Flay”) and Jeff Mauro (“The Kitchen”) to the kitchen, asking them each to lead a team of fun-loving singles – all self-proclaimed “kitchen disasters” – through a relentless and life-changing culinary boot camp. As Burrell and Mauro teach the contestants the skills required to master the kitchen once and for all, they hope to turn them, as Food Network says, from “cooking duds into kitchen studs.”
In its description for the series, Food Network explains: “The recruits not only learn how to make date-friendly dishes like sushi, spicy wontons and classic French pastries, they also go head-to-head in romantic dating-inspired challenges like the Cupid Games, the Bagel-orette and the Inferno Zone. In the end, only the most improved recruit left standing is awarded a $25,000 grand prize, bragging rights for their mentor and the ability to add “great cook” to their dating profile.
The network continued with a deep dive into the season’s first episode, dishing out some juicy details: “Before picking teams, Anne and Jeff kick off the competition by having the recruits make their
signature ‘seal the deal’ meal to show off their skills, or lack thereof, in the kitchen. Then in the main dish challenge, the teams learn to make duck paired with a fruit sauce. After assessing everyone’s skills, Anne and Jeff reveal a unique twist when choosing their teams.”
During following episodes, these culinary (and relationship) hopefuls are introduced to some of the classic dishes of Italy, take a lesson on hand-pulling made-from-scratch noodles with chef Victor Huang and compete in a dazzling, Las Vegas-inspired challenge, recreating an over-the-top dish without a recipe.
In the grand finale — a double date of its own, with the two final episodes airing back-to-back on Sunday, Sept. 10 — the two “most improved” chefs put their newfangled know-how to the test as they are asked to serve a three-course, restaurant-quality meal to a panel of expert judges, including chef Hawa Hassan, Christian Petroni (“Food Network Star”) and Chris Scott (“Top Chef”). Whoever can serve the most date-worthy meal will go on to win it all.
With twists, turns and romance in abundance, “Worst Cooks in America: Love at First Bite” premieres Sunday, Aug. 6, on Food Network.

This critically acclaimed docuseries returns with Volume 3, a four-week summer event that pulls back the curtain on tales from the wide (and wild) world of sports. This installment looks at Johnny Manziel, who, in 2012, was the brightest star in all of sports as an undersized freshman quarterback at unheralded Texas A&M. Dubbed “Johnny Football,” the magnetic football player captured the nation’s attention and initially relished his alter ego, but eventually Manziel rejected his newfound fame and suddenly lost his way. With astonishing candor, Manziel and those closest to him details what happened behind the scenes.
A fictionalized retelling of events, this scripted limited series explores some of the origins and aftermath of the opioid crisis in America, highlighting the stories of the perpetrators, victims, and truth-seekers whose lives are forever altered by the invention of OxyContin. An examination of crime, accountability, and the systems that have repeatedly failed hundreds of thousands of Americans, the series is based on the book “Pain Killer” by Barry Meier and the New Yorker Magazine article “The Family That Built the Empire of Pain” by Patrick Radden Keefe. Uzo Aduba, Matthew Broderick, Taylor Kitsch, Dina Shihabi, West Duchovny and John Rothman star.
“Movie: Heart of Stone”
Secret Agent Rachel Stone (Gal Gadot) is not your average operative — Stone is a member of an elusive and mysterious group of elite spies known as the Charter. To achieve their lofty aims, those agents rely on a one-of-a-kind asset called the Heart, the world’s most advanced and powerful AI. When a hacker sets out to take control of the Heart and take over the world, it’s up to Agent Stone to stop them before it’s too late. Jamie Dornan, Alia Bhatt, Sophie Okonedo, Jing Lusi and Paul Ready also star.

The Friars Club also was famous for staging such events, but “The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” brought home no-holds-barred testimonials to stars. Catchy Comedy continues a weekend festival of the specials Sunday, Aug. 6, and it’s interesting to see how many talents were regulars on the dais, whether they had direct connections to the celebrity of the hour or not. Think in terms of Ruth Buzzi, Jimmie Walker, Foster Brooks, impressionist Rich Little and the king of ’Roast” regulars, Don Rickles.
Among those who are feted during the marathon are Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Angie Dickinson, Lucille Ball, Michael Landon (who actually was honored at a couple of the “Roasts,” including the very last one staged), Sammy Davis Jr., Betty White, Jack Klugman – and Telly Savalas, whose frequent “What am I doing here?” looks are marvelously unmistakable.

“I think circus today is the ultimate theatrical phenomenon that can actually draw people through the doors of a theater,” Gomex said when asked why circus arts seem to be more popular in recent years. “The magic of circus is about blending different disciplines and different spectacular things on stage… If you blend skills, you have more of a chance to bring people to your doors. And that gets a little bit circus-y.”
Even though his students make their acts seem easy, there is still a possibility of peril — and that’s part of what makes it exciting.
“From a theatrical point of view, the risk is real,” Gomex said. “Gravity is real.”
The circus is both physical and creative, Gomex explains. He teaches his students the vital physical skills necessary to perform while incorporating lessons about teamwork, humility, respect, body autonomy, self compassion and dedication.
“They understand that hard stuff takes time, and the hardest stuff is actually the coolest stuff,” Gomex said.
And they have fun while doing it.
“By encouraging mistakes and trying new things, your kids will grow before your eyes in confidence, strength and silliness,” one parent wrote in a Google review.
The last time Gomex was featured in this section, in March 2019, the story was about his own journey. Now, he puts the focus on his students.
Teaching, he said, became the mission as it was happening. This week’s campers are the advanced students, some of whom have been dedicating their time to 406Cirque since its inception, when then Bozeman Public Library children’s librarian Cindy Christian and Great Beginnings Montessori’s
head of school Gennifre Hartman saw Gomex talk about Clowns Without Borders at a PechaKucha night in April 2018 and approached him with a proposal.
The women asked what he was doing in Bozeman and Gomex replied he was “changing diapers,” referring to caring for his infant daughter Lila.
Soon, he was recruited to lead summer activities at both the school and the library. By October he had set up an LLC and rented a studio.
“It’s been a long ride,” Gomex said. “It’s been a fun ride too, starting with six kids and now to this point: It’s rare someone doesn’t know 406Cirque now.”
It hasn’t always been easy for
Gomex. He felt alone at times, frustrated for lack of support and knowledge. If he wanted a new coach, he had to teach them. No one with experience was available. Yet Gomex persisted, falling back on his sense of community responsibility and love of the circus.
“(Circus) gave me a sense of purpose,” Gomex said, explaining how performing steered him toward more healthy risks than some of his peers. “I was taking risks, seeking extreme sensations, but I was healthy and happy.”
406Cirque is in the process of creating a nonprofit arm to better serve the causes that have always been central to its mission, spreading clowning and joy to those who need it most such as kids in the hospital or refugees in camps around the world.
Part of the growth is due to Naomi Shafer, executive director of Clowns Without Borders USA, who met Gomex when he was the head of the Switzerland branch of the organization and moved to Bozeman to help run 406Cirque after the pair started dating. He and Shafer were
married at the end of May.
“Now it’s more of a family operation,” Gomex said.
With her skills as a “bad ass” executive, Shafer will be in charge of the nonprofit, Gomex said. This will allow him to focus on performing and teaching.
“406Cirque is about to jump into a big big adventure now,” Gomex said.
In addition to the classes, the after school programs and summer camps, Gomex is producing two circus-based performances, “Spooktacular” on Oct 21 and a circus version of “A Christmas Carol” on Dec. 15, both at the Emerson Center’s Crawford Theater. 406Cirque is hosting three more circus villages, starting at 5 p.m. in Lindley Park on Aug. 15, 22 and 29. And the campers will perform at the Sweet Pea Festival on Sunday, Aug. 6 at 3 p.m.
“I feel like these five years have given me and Bozeman the opportunity to understand what circus is in my vision and how circus can be beneficial for children and the community,” Gomex said.

Questions:
BY ROBERTO JOZEFRamírez and Guardians look to keep momentum going
It’s been a less-than-stellar Major League Baseball season for the Cleveland Guardians, who had high hopes following an unexpected playoff run last year.
BY ALEX HENDRYTennis: WTA Tour
Answers:
1) The WTA Tour resumes August 4, in Montreal, with the 2023 Canadian Open - which Canadian player won the open in 2019?
2) Who was the most recent American champion of the U.S. Open’s Women’s Singles event?
3) At the 1956 French Open, history was made with the first African-American woman winning a Grand Slam event - name that player.
4) Winning 24 Grand Slam titles during her career, this player remains the all-time record holder - who is she?
5) Which player entered the 2023 WTA Tour as the No. 1 ranked player in the world?
6) Name the two finalists of the 2002 Wimbledon championship.
7) Who is the only woman to have won the singles championship at the U.S. Open eight times during her career?
8)Who became the first woman to win all four Grand Slam events in a single calendar year (1953)?
Kicking off the 2023 campaign with a 10-9 record in a mediocre AL Central division, the Guardians looked to build momentum in June when their offence began to heat up, with José Ramírez continuing to lead the charge in the second half of the season. Now, the Guardians look to close out their series against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, Aug. 6, in a game streaming live on Peacock. Since making his Guardians debut in 2013, José Ramírez is a cornerstone of the Guardians franchise. Ramírez has consistently put on display an elite on-field performance over the past 10 seasons and, with a career batting average of .279, he has consistently come through with clutch hits and more than 200 home runs. He has also stolen over 180 bases, making him a constant threat at any point in the game.
Proving he’s worth every penny, the Guardians recently signed Ramirez to a $141-million contract extension. He was the team’s lone representative in this year’s All-Star Game (teammate Emmanuel Clase opted out due to family obligations), and he has led the team in multiple offensive categories, including slugging percentage and home runs. Impressively, Ramírez has, as of this writing, managed to pick up a hit in 76.7% of 86 games played.
Those are solid stats, but the White Sox know how to slow him down. In their first three meetings, the White Sox walked away victorious, and Ramírez managed to pull off only one hit in those three meetings — something Ramírez will surely look to change in Sunday’s match.
After wrapping their weekend series against the White Sox, the Guardians will have to quickly shift their focus to a visit from the all-offensive Toronto Blue Jays. Look for Ramirez and the Guardians to come out swinging and get on the board early when the Jays take on the Guardians in a four-game series beginning Monday, Aug. 7, airing on ESPN.
