Hawthorne opening doors with new management
RACHEL HERGETT for the Chronicle
Madeline Hawthorne has a hellish commute. Over coffee at Studio Coffee Roasters on Monday, the Bozeman musician talks of the two days it took her to drive back from Denver, Colorado, encountering black ice, blustering winds and closed highways.
“Colorado is where I work,” Hawthorne said.
Her touring band — featuring Ace Engfer on bass and vocals, Taylor Tesler on lead guitar and vocals, Cody Russell on pedal steel and Sean Macaulay on drums — is based in the Mile High City. So is new manager Phil Einsohn of 7S Management.
“I courted him at first,” Hawthorne said of Einsohn, who manages acts like John Cragie and Shook Twins. “It wasn’t one of those situations where they discovered me.”
With nearly a decade since she first started playing music in public, Hawthorne was used to doing everything herself. She booked and promoted her own shows. She found producers and session players for her album “Boots,” released in 2021. She recruited the touring band.
But it was time to seek out management when she had a “panic moment” before a show, Hawthorne said. The players in her band needed more opportunity and paychecks equivalent to their worth. She couldn’t make it happen alone.
“I’m busting my ass, but there’s certain doors that I just can’t open by myself,” she said. “I can’t even get to the freakin’ hallway.”

OF ‘WILL TRENT’ ON ABC
How do you feel “Will Trent” balances continuing stories and whatever the mystery of the given week’s episode might be?
Each character has something going on in their lives, and that’s the part we’ve tried to serialize, the character arcs. Hopefully, there is an evolution to each of these characters throughout the season.
What do you think of the special connection between Will and police detective Angie Polaski (played by Erika Christensen?
She is absolutely rooted to his history, and vice versa, and that has its pros and cons. They’re kind of like active triggers for each other, which is interesting, and that’s the push-and-pull that we get to play with. It’s a complicated situation that they both have to endure and work out, one way or another.
So much of Will is shrouded in mystery, we get glimpses of other sides of him through people like Angie ... and again, vice versa, since we only get other sides of Angie through Will. And that’s fun, to see who people are with other people in their lives.
The identity of the celebrity is found within the answers in the puzzle. In order to take the TV Challenge, un-scramble the letters noted with asterisks in the puzzle. What’s Available NOW On

Michelle Monaghan plays a fellow passenger.

A drug cartel chief (Benjamin Bratt) is the main target, but some authorities prove just as dangerous. Susan Sarandon, Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead”), Barry Pepper and Harold Perrineau also star.

Obituaries Writer (Newly) Single Disaster Advice
BY GEORGE DICKIEBeefs, professional and otherwise, are settled on ‘Superchef Grudge Match’
Chefs with a score to settle do just that in a competition series coming to Food Network and discovery+.
In “Superchef Grudge Match,” premiering Tuesday, Feb. 7, personal and professional feuds play out in a one-round, one-dish winner-take-all battle that ends with the winner getting a $10,000 prize and the loser’s knife and, hopefully, the hatchet being buried.
So in the hourlong episodes, the scenarios can range from food competition rivalries and business partner beefs to a mentor vs. protege grudge and a social media dispute. Darnell Ferguson (“Worst Cooks in America”) stages the face-offs, which he explains are mostly friendly.
“Sometimes it’s not so much personal as it is professional,” he says. “For me personally, I like when they both intertwine with each other ... how each chef is able to bring a challenge for the other chef. Like no matter if it’s professional or not, you’re going to personally bring something that you think will be able to (distract) the other chef and throw them off.”
“It’s just playful, joyful but it’s a lot of back and forth,” he continues. “And I’ve seen people focus a lot more on the competition with the chef sometimes than they did focus on their dish.”
In Tuesday’s opener, a “Tournament of Champions” rematch plays out between Season 2 combatants Jet Tila and Antonia Lofaso. Ferguson, who hosted that series in 2021, says both come in with something to prove.
“This is the opportunity not only for Antonia, who lost on that big stage, to get her revenge,” he says, “but this time, it’s an opportunity for Jet to show like, ‘Hey, that wasn’t a fluke, just so everyone knows that.’ And Antonia, I think she kind of thought it may have been a little bit.
“I know she had to think she won,” he continues. “No one cooks a dish and doesn’t think they won. So it’s a good match-up between two friends. Like in the NBA, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade may be friends but if you lose that championship, you want that back again. So this is that opportunity for them.”
Also in that inaugural episode is a battle of business partners when restaurateur Brian Malarkey and chef Carlos Anthony go at it. And in later episodes, there are clashes between commentators Simon Majumdar and Justin Warner, “Iron Chef Gauntlet” adversaries Stephanie Izard and Shota Nakajima and San Diego chefs Drew Bent and Claudia Sandoval, among others.

‘The
Godfather’ and its ‘Part II’ endure as movie milestones
One story gave cinema two of its greatest films ever. A testament to the matching popularity and quality of “The Godfather” and “The Godfather, Part II” is that one usually isn’t televised without the other, and AMC will show both again Saturday, Feb. 11.
“The Godfather, Part III” is widely considered the weak link of the series, often relegated to the late-late-night hours. However, two out of three isn’t bad – and in the case of the first two “Godfathers,” both Oscar winners for best picture, it’s downright great. Francis Ford Coppola still was something of a Hollywood newcomer when he directed the first film taken from Mario Puzo’s novel about an organized-crime family, a 1972 epic in which Marlon Brando looms large as patriarch Vito Corleone even when he isn’t physically on the screen. Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton also star.
more retro rewinds
“Star Trek” (Heroes & Icons, Sunday, Feb. 5): One of television’s truly iconic series gets much credit for its handling of racial issues, and the episode “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” – which debuted toward the end of the show’s three-season run – stands as a prime example. Two aliens (played by Frank Gorshin and Lou Antonio) who are both black and white, quite literally, catch the Enterprise and its crew in the midst of their long-running battle.

Hawthorne invited Einsohn to the Bluebird eater in Denver, where she was opening for bluegrass band Town Mountain on June 9. After watching the show, he invited her to meet the next day.

Hawthorne said it was Adams who convinced her to move to Bozeman. She already had her eye on the west after a family vacation to Idaho the summer before her senior year of high school. She knew little of the area, so she simply applied to all the “University of” schools in the states around Idaho.

He’s just finished arguably the best year of his career, rushing for 1,525 yards (third in the NFL) on 302 carries (a 5.1 yards-per-carry average) and 12 touchdowns and caught 27 passes for 239 yards and one TD. His 1,525 yards puts him behind only Brown’s superhuman single-season club record of 1,863 in 1963, accomplished in an era when teams played 14 regular season games compared to today’s 17.
For his career, Chubb’s 6,340 yards on the ground rank him fourth among Browns runners behind only Brown (12,312), Kelly (7,274) and Pruitt (6,560). With health, Chubb should be able to eclipse Kelly and Pruitt’s totals next year and take up the pursuit of Brown’s all-time Browns mark.
His career year in 2022 didn’t go unnoticed by Pro Bowl voters, who selected him to the AFC roster for what is now a non-contact flag football contest in the reconfigured all-star game against the NFC. That will air Sunday, Feb. 5, on ABC and NFL Network from Allegiant Stadium outside of Las Vegas.
