New position broadens Emerson’s o erings

Heidi Krutchkoff can’t help but sniff the air when she enters the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture’s ballroom or Crawford Theater. Even with renovations, the smells haven’t changed since Krutchkoff, nee Rasmussen, was an elementary student in the former school building. “I have so many nostalgic memories of that building,” Krutchkoff said. “I love that building.”

Being back in the space as the Emerson’s rst artistic director has felt like coming full circle for Rasmussen.

“So much of my dreams as a human started there and in the Wilson. ose were the rst times I was on stage,” Krutchko said. “To be able to have gone to New York, to have had the fun, the career, the support and a rmation there and then to be able to take that back to that same place is healing, and an honor, and just really awesome.”

Last spring, Krutchko applied to lead the Emerson’s educational programming. She knew she wasn’t the right t. But Susan Denson-Guy, the Emerson’s executive director, had been stewing on the idea of an area talent competition — a massive undertaking that would lend itself to Krutchko ’s skills in event coordination and production.

“It felt like the right person, the right energy, the right connections, the right

re,” Denson-Guy said.

Auditions for that competition — now called the Beast of Bozeman — begin Jan. 20. e six-week performance art competition culminates with the crowning of e Beast of Bozeman over two nights; Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4. Krutchko is at its helm.

While the Emerson is home to events as wide-ranging as fundraisers, speakers, lm screenings, a farmers market, an ice festival and performances of all kinds, other groups are usually behind them. Hundreds of vendors use the ballroom and theater spaces each year, according to Denson-Guy. at will not change.

“We always want to be here for other arts groups to have a venue,” she said.

Events hosted by the Emerson, coordinated by the artistic director, seek to add to the o erings of other groups, to invite new audiences into the space and give more performers their time to shine.

OF ‘1923’ ON PARAMOUNT+

You typically have such an active schedule, did you have to move other projects to fulfill the series commitment of “1923”?

You make choices of what you decide you want to do and what you don’t want to do. I had done a series of quite demanding roles, including (former Israeli Prime Minister) Golda Meir, and it was time to do something different. This was nothing I had done before, it was quintessentially American, and I just thought it would be a great adventure. And it has been.

You’ve come to “1923” after receiving more accolades including the Screen Actors Guild’s Life Achievement Award. Is it safe to assume that this has been a satisfying period for you?

Of course, but honestly, the real benefit is the playing of a scene and feeling that it worked. The other stuff is lovely, but it is absolutely peripheral. The exciting thing is sharing a space with wonderful actors and feeling that you’re telling a story well. That’s really all we want to do.

Belly on up for the best drinking movies

For those who have dedicated themselves to a Dry January, we salute your restraint. But the following list is not for you.

Drinking has made for some of the funniest storylines and moments in film history as well as some of its most memorable characters. After all, who can forget guzzling frat brother Bluto in “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” California wine-quaffing pals Miles and Jack from “Sideways” or philosophical New York barkeep Doug from “Cocktail”?

They’re all great characters who we laughed at, sometimes cried with and always cared about. Which is what great entertainment is all about. The following are some the best films in that vein.

“National Lampoon’s Animal House” (Streams on Prime Video, Redbox, Vudu, Apple TV+): Director John Landis’ 1978 classic about the hedonistic antics of a 1950s college fraternity cemented stardom for “Saturday Night Live’s” John Belushi as the aforementioned Bluto as well as launched the long careers of Kevin Bacon, Karen Allen and future “Amadeus” Oscar nominee Tom Hulce.

“Strange Brew” (Streams on Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV+, Redbox): Canada exported the zany misadventures of SCTV’s Bob and Doug McKenzie to the U.S. with this 1983 comedy that starred Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as the two dimwitted, beer-swilling brothers and hosts of the talk show “Great White North,” who

discover something foul is afoot at the local local brewery where they work.

“Cocktail” (Streams on Prime Video, Apple TV+, Vudu, Redbox): While Tom Cruise was the headliner of Roger Donaldson’s 1988 dramedy about a talented New York bartender with big dreams, it is Bryan Brown who steals the show as Douglas Coughlin, his troubled friend and cohort with a cynical view of life and a self-destructive streak.

“Sideways” (Streams on Spectrum, HBO Max, Prime Video, Apple TV+): No list of great drinking movies is complete without Alexander Payne’s excellent 2004 dramedy about two Southern California pals (Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church) who drink good wine, romance distinctive women (Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh) and examine their own lives while touring Santa Barbara wine country in the days leading up to one’s wedding.

“Another Round” (Streams on Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Kanopy): In this 2020 Danish comedy, four teachers decide to test a theory that humans are born with too a low an alcohol level and thus proceed with a social experiment in which they consume limited amounts of it at work with the goal of achieving optimal performance as well as reduced stress and tension. The results are, well, mixed to say the least. Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”) heads the cast.

Charlton Heston is ‘The Omega Man’

The success of the original “Planet of the Apes” movie proved that Charlton Heston and sci-fi suited each other well, so the Oscar-winning actor stayed in that genre for “The Omega Man.” Turner Classic Movies shows the effective 1971 melodrama (directed by television veteran Boris Segal) Monday, Jan. 23, as part of a night of films suggesting what could happen after an apocalypse.

In the case of Heston’s Robert Neville, that means fighting robed, sunglass-wearing mutants who wreak mayhem and try to convert whatever is left of the human race to their state. Also featuring Anthony Zerbe and Rosalind Cash, this actually is one of several screen adaptations of the Richard Matheson story “I Am Legend,” also including an earlier one that starred Vincent Price and a later one with Will Smith.

“Historically, we’ve never used our theater as a way to directly engage the community with our organization,” Denson-Guy said.

She and Krutchkoff both reference “a rising tide” when they talk about their vision for the new position.

Taking on some in-house event curation expands on the Emerson’s existing exhibits and educational offerings, and lends itself to the organizational goal of “stimulating and celebrating the arts in all its forms.”

“It broadens the way we’re able to serve the community,” Krutchkoff said. “The Emerson is looking for new ways to stay relevant and continue to engage different audiences.”

Krutchkoff graduated from Bozeman High School in 1998, enrolling in Montana State University to study under Stephanie Campbell and Montana Shakespeare in the Parks’ longtime director Joel Jahnke. But her sights were on New York City. She left MSU after a year to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and pursue dreams of performing on the city’s stages.

New York was home for 10 years. There, Krutchkoff performed as a comic, appearing at clubs such as Caroline’s and Stand Up New York in addition to other roles and the standard artist food industry job. She and now husband, Keith, met while working in restaurants across the street from each other. She ran a seafood restaurant on the Upper West Side. He worked in an Italian place across the street. After they married and had their first of now three daughters, he suggested they move to Bozeman.

Back in her hometown, Krutchkoff has been no stranger to the stage, acting,

singing or dancing with most of the area’s theater companies. She likes that it doesn’t have the same type of hustle as New York, and still maintains an admirable performance quality.

“I wanted more of those intimate settings and work that was meaningful,” she said.

As the Emerson’s artistic director, Krutchkoff took on the annual Lunch on the Lawn music series last summer and added community open mics to the event roster. In December, she produced the Holiday Noir show, an variety show with burlesque and cabaret-style performance. One attendee, Joel Martin, said Holiday Noir surprised him and was one of the best shows he has seen in Bozeman. The adult-oriented show pushed boundaries for some, while opening up new avenues for others to explore their creativity.

“The Emerson is here for everybody,” Denson-Guy said. “We’re looking to reinvent what we do to invite in a new audience to make sure we’re reaching the entire Bozeman community.”

For her part, Krutchoff loves a variety show, calling it her “favorite recurring theme.” She is drawn to the idea of bringing together as many different types of acts as possible, and lean into the “variety” idea when showcasing talents. In Bozeman, she has produced these types of shows at increasingly large venues, putting people she describes as “magic” on stage and asking them to give it their best for a couple of minutes. She saw it in the Holiday Noir and expects to see more in the Beast of Bozeman competition.

“There’s these pockets of talent in Bozeman — these incredibly, ridiculously talented people,” Krutchkoff said.

The Beast of Bozeman

The Beast of Bozeman is a six-week performance art competition, beginning with auditions on Jan. 20, 23, 24 and 25, and culminating with the crowning of The Beast of Bozeman over two nights; Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4.

Simmons’ play is turning heads in Brooklyn

For the past two seasons, the Brooklyn Nets seemed to lead the NBA in dysfunction.

When Kyrie Irving’s mouth wasn’t getting him suspended, Kevin Durant was making clear he and head coach Steve Nash couldn’t exist on the same team and James Harden just wanted out. Period.

When the former MVP got his wish in February 2022, his trade to the Philadelphia 76ers brought back one of the league’s most enigmatic players in Ben Simmons. And now the 6-foot-10-inch Australian has been one of the keys to the Nets’ recent winning streak.

On Dec. 23, he was instrumental in shutting out two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in the fourth quarter of the Nets’ 118-100 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, and four days later he held Donovan Mitchell to 5-of-16 shooting in Brooklyn’s 125-117 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

These aren’t contributions that show up in any box score but fans, opposing players and certainly his teammates notice.

Still, the defense- and passing-first point guard has managed to put up some impressive secondary numbers during his team’s streak. In the 10 wins from Dec. 7-28, he had the team’s best net rating (+21.7) and defensive rating (106.6) as well as the top offensive rating (127.9) among the regular rotation players. Not bad for someone not known for his shooting.

He’s still getting used to his new teammates as well as healing from May back surgery. So the best may be yet to come as the No. 2-seeded Nets strive to take the top seed from the Boston Celtics in the East.

Simmons and the Nets can be seen on national television twice this week: visiting his former teammates the 76ers Wednesday, Jan. 25, on ESPN, and at home against the New York Knicks, Saturday, Jan. 28, on ABC.
