For the Chronicle
In the 1998 Oscar-winning lm “Shakespeare in Love,” the daughter of a wealthy merchant (portrayed by Gwenth Paltrow) disguises herself as a man in order to act in William Shakespeare’s latest play. Her actions are scandalous for the era. While some characters in Shakespeare’s plays were women, during the Elizabethan Age, women were not allowed to play the roles.
“Men were portraying Juliet. ey were portraying Isabella,” said Kevin Asselin, executive artistic director for Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, in regards to the history of Shakespearian productions.
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks opened its 51st season in Bozeman this week.
e company will perform nearly 80 times over the next three months, traversing the state and venturing out into Idaho, Wyoming and Washington with two productions, Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure” and a stage adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel “ e ree Musketeers” by Robert Kauzlaric.
e 2023 summer season features 11 actors, ve of whom are women — the

Chicago actors Sam Cheeseman and Emily Hawkins will join their rst summer tours after years in the Shakespeare in the Schools and MT Shakes! companies. And Riley O’Toole is celebrating his tenth tour this year.
Madison Kiernan, who interned with the company last season, is now a cast member and Alex Albrecht, Avery Johnson, Liam Johnson, Elijah Newman and Emily Michelle Walton are debuting with the company. e number of female-identifying actors re ects part of MSIP’s vision of the future.

Q: Now that you’re in the 16th season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” how do you feel about the vast variety of things you’ve been asked to do in your time on the show?
A: I get thrown out of windows. I come out of couches naked. I bleed all over everything. I’ve done everything. I mean, not everything … because there are probably going to be other things. If anybody thinks of anything that they want to see me do, you can write to (the producers), and if it’s outrageous enough, they’ll put it in the show.
Q: Has the era of political correctness made it tougher to do some of the bawdy humor the show is known for?
A: The main thing about that is respect. There’s funny and then there’s abusive. There’s jokes, and everybody kids each other about stuff – but when there’s the violation of personal space, then I think you’re in a big mess. To a certain degree, I don’t think I’ve ever changed anything. Women need to be heard and listened to and that’s great, but I really don’t feel like the majority of the comedians in the world who poke fun at themselves and each other are abusive. I don’t think that’s the case. There are rare cases of that, and they’ve come to the surface.
Q: What do you think the show has done for the reputation of Philadelphia?
A: I’m from New Jersey, a little bit outside of Philly, but wherever I go now – since the show’s been on and is very popular all over the world, basically – people will say to me things like, “Go Philly! Hey, Philly!” Something like that, you know. I think all the Philly people that I’ve encountered so far, no matter how base we are, they just think of it as kind of a cool thing and a feather in their cap. They like our show, I think. And we like Philly, too.

BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT‘Food Truck Race’ starts historic season of competition
After 15 seasons, “The Great Food Truck Race” is ready for a shakeup. With eight new episodes and higher-than-ever stakes, this special edition series will — for the first time — pit returning champions and industry professionals against some very talented up-and-coming rookies from across the country — all food truck novices. Their toughest challenge yet, “The Great Food Truck Race: David vs. Goliath,” premieres Sunday, June 18, on Food Network.
Representing cuisines from all over the world — from Jamaican tacos and Pakistani street foods to elevated vegan dishes — this season’s chefs hail from pop-ups, specialty spots and traditional restaurant kitchens alike, each prepared to face some of “TGFTR’s” toughest food-truckers yet.
“Tyler welcomes the nine teams to Los Angeles, where the food truck business is booming and cutthroat,” shared Food Network in a sneak peek of the season’s first episode. “With five talented rookie teams who have never owned or operated a food truck and four teams of seasoned pros, this ‘David vs. Goliath’ battle gives each business the once-ina-lifetime opportunity to establish themselves in the country’s food truck capital.”
They go on to explain that: “For the first chal-
lenge, the teams must make a jaw-dropping dish that not only defines them as a business – but also demonstrates they are ready to compete at a high culinary level.” From there, the teams “hit the baseball field to serve Little League players and their families,” joined by Mookie Betts of the L.A. Dodgers.
As the season continues, the teams will be asked to make dishes inspired by the menus at chef Antonia Lofaso’s well-known L.A.-based restaurants (Black Market Liquor Bar, DAMA and Scopa Italian Roots) and create masterpieces delicious enough to satisfy guest judges, chefs Jet Tila and Joe Sasto, along with last season’s winner, Señoreata’s Evanice Holz. Outside of the kitchen, the chefs must put their business savvy to the test, drawing crowds through social media and exercising their best and most effective selling techniques.
Parked in the city’s business epicenter, these truck-runners are not only fighting against each other but also against a hectic flow of hungry people passing by, looking for a delicious meal on the quick. Fast-paced as ever, one team will be eliminated each episode, leaving only two to go head-to-head in a battle for the winning title and a $50,000 grand prize.

Intense drama still reigns ‘On the Waterfront’
Still recognized as a towering achievement in film drama almost 70 years later, “On the Waterfront” is packed with award-caliber performances. Turner Classic Movies shows the 1954 picture Saturday, June 24, with Marlon Brando sparking the emotional and sometimes physical action as a boxer turned dock worker who takes a dangerous stand against his brutal boss (Lee J. Cobb).
Directed by Elia Kazan from Budd Schulberg’s script (with a music score by Leonard Bernstein), the saga marked the film debut of Eva Marie Saint, who won an Oscar here — as did Brando. Overall, the movie earned eight Academy Awards including best picture. Rod Steiger, Karl Malden and such then-uncredited talents as Fred Gwynne, Martin Balsam and Pat Hingle also appear.

Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront”“We’re really working to strengthen the balance of equality and inclusion with the company, whether that is diversity within the LGBTQ+ community or with women,” Asselin said. “It has been a big part of our growth.”
In MSIP’s productions, roles that need not be gendered may not be. “Measure for Measure” sees women playing Escalus, Lucio and Elbow in addition to Isabella and Mariana.
is mission is also re ected in the casting of “ e ree Musketeers,” according to Asselin, who is directing the play. ough not historically accurate, expect to see women taking on militaristic roles or nding greater voice within the action.
“We’re telling a story,” said Andrew Rathgeber, the play’s ght director. “You don’t have to be a certain gender to be a storyteller. e words are what matters.”
One part — portrayed by Emily Hawkins — merges the novel’s Milady de Winter and Comte de Rochefort, the Cardinal’s primary right hand.
“Combining Milady into that role in giving her an
elevated status and presence in the play,” Asselin said.
According to “Measure for Measure” director Peter Andersen, the play is a linguistic masterpiece from Shakespeare. It is a play of drastic shifts, oscillating between farce and tragedy. However, because it doesn’t t neatly into a genre, and has been considered one of Shakespeare’s “problem plays.”
MSIP last produced “Measure for Measure” in 2000, but it has only become more poignant, Asselin said. It very directly addresses female agency over their own lives
and bodies.
“ e play talks a lot about justice and the measuring of scales between mercy and justice and forgiveness,” Asselin said. “ ose are all relevant themes in the 21st century. In all areas of our world, the qualities of mercy that are re ected in these stories are really important for us to be mindful of.”
e ending isn’t sunshine and rainbows. Every person isn’t neatly coupled to their true love. e future is uncertain.
“By leaving his audience with a dissonant ending, (Shakespeare) is inviting them to think critically and reexamine everything that led up to that nal moment,” Andersen writes in the director’s notes for the production.
Asselin said MSIP chose “ e ree Musketeers” as a counterpart to “Measure for Measure” for this season nearly a year ago. Now, he said, 2023 is looking to be the summer of “ e ree Musketeers,” with no less than three lms and a BBC series based on the book in the works.
e company was drawn to the themes of honor, loyalty and friendship while seeking to connect with some of its younger audience members.
“D’Artagnan’s story is that of a young person’s journey, leaving the world he knows — that of his family unit — and challenging himself to adventure into his heroic goals,” Asselin said.
“ e ree Musketeers” may be a relevant story, but it is also sprawling. e action takes place over decades and follows its protagonist across Europe. Kauzlaric’s adaptation takes a complex novel and distills it into a more doable 2-hour play. Asselin
said he has been approaching the production like a symphony, leaning into musical themes to represent place and time through D’Artagnan’s adventures.
“It’s important for our adult audiences to witness that experience,” said Asselin, who was the ght director for the adaptation’s premiere in 2011. “We intrinsically are our 18-year-old selves. D’Artagnan’s journey is equally as relevant to us and the ways in which we can remember our own past. It’s a great reminder as we get older how important it is we remain sel ess.”

Answers:
BY ROBERTO JOZEFStroll looks to eradicate ‘pay driver’ status at Canadian Grand Prix
There’s no denying it: Lance Stroll is a rising talent on the track.
Born in Montreal, Stroll currently holds the record as the second-youngest driver to ever start a Formula One Grand Prix. He is the first Canadian F1 driver since Jacques Villeneuve in 1997.
As the son of billionaire businessman Lawrence Stroll, who is part owner of Aston Martin, Stroll has battled the label “Pay Driver” for much of his career while steered by his relentless thirst for speed.
Making his professional debut in 2017, Stroll joined Williams Grand Prix Engineering but trouble ensued after his debut season. The Williams FW41 was the slowest on the field that season, with the team finishing last in the Constructors Standings. His string of bad luck continued with a horrendous crash involving Brendan Hartley in the final lap of the Canadian Grand Prix; an early retirement due to a tire puncture at the French Grand Prix; and a brake failure at the German Grand Prix. Stroll’s career has taken an upward trajectory since joining his father’s Aston Martin team in 2019. The Canadian is slowly evolving into a tour de force, earning his first pole position at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, as well as podium finishes in Monza and Sakhir.
Having proven himself over the past five seasons, Stroll currently sits in eighth place, 117 points behind Max Verstappen for the No. 1 spot in the Driver Standings. Despite a sub-par performance in Monaco earlier this year, Stroll will surely be looking for a strong performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, where a great performance on home soil could catapult his career higher than ever, and potentially silence some critics along the way.
The Canadian Grand Prix kicks off Sunday, June 18, in Montreal. Catch all the action live on ABC and ESPN+.
