RACHEL HERGETT

For the Chronicle

“I’m all over the place,” musician Jori Apedaile said more than once during an interview with the Chronicle last week.

ough back in Bozeman for a visit, “all over the place” may be true physically. Apedaile grew up in Billings, studied music tech at Montana State University in Bozeman, graduating in 2014, and has since lived in Helena, Missoula, Minneapolis, Bozeman and now in the Columbia Gorge an hour east of Portland, Oregon.

Apedaile also said he was “all over the place” in terms of career. His

day job usually consists of computer-based work. Most recently, Apedaile has been running operations for a tness equipment company, but he will switch over to a new job as a project manager for a litigation assistance company where he will help attorneys with document discovery. It’s not ideal.

Apedaile would rather use his degree, leaning into performance and his post-production skills mastering recordings for vinyl. He has put these skills to work on dungeon synth albums from Dungeons Deep Records out of Dayton, Ohio, and local groups such as Tiny Iota and Anaconda Vise.

In one instance, Apedaile was

talking about being all over the place in his music. He will perform at the Filling Station in Bozeman on Monday, June 26, with two vastly di erent projects — Eneferens and Merle Hagrid and the Butterbeer Boys.

“My in uences are changing all the time,” Apedaile said. “It’s not necessarily rooted in one thing — hence why I’m playing as a Harry Potter joke act and a black metal act on the same bill.”

Merle Hagrid grew out of its name — an outlaw country rooted novelty act connecting the iconic singer Merle Haggard with Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter universe.

“I’m a huge fan of puns and play

on words and stu like that,” Apedaile said. “I always have been. I just had this stupid idea, like Merle Haggard, but Hagrid. But the more I thought about it, I was like ‘what if this was real?’”

Apedaile searched the internet for a similar act and found nothing. He created a Facebook page and a persona, taking pictures in the woods of Minnesota to legitimize the act.

OF HOW I MET YOUR FATHER ON HULU

Q: What attracted you to “How I Met Your Father”?

A: I’m extremely lucky to have gotten the opportunity to play Sophie. I am so attracted to parts that are extremely relatable, and this one happens to touch on just trying to find love in this world that we live in with all the options that there are, and how hard it is to meet someone face-to-face. And the fact that she has this lovely friend circle that, kind of, comes together in a strange way, it was all just really attractive to me.

Q: What do you think about the show being careful to stay separate from the earlier “How I Met Your Mother” while also paying homage to it?

A: I think it’s important to know that we are our own show. The original show was so amazing, and (the cast members) were so tied into one another and just did such an amazing job, but this is its own show.

We clicked pretty fast. We were like, “Huh, we have a show. We did it. We look like we are best friends. We like each other.” It kind of all fell into place, and we just hope that that magic comes across when other people watch it, because we are like, “We think we did a good job.”

Hats off: chefs face a labyrinth of challenges in new Hulu show

The out-of-the-box, out-of-the-ordinary cooking competition, “Secret Chef,” pits chef against chef in a blind taste-test-off when it premieres Thursday, June 29, on Hulu.

From executive producer David Chang (“Ugly Delicious”) — himself a renowned chef and restauranteur, having founded the Momofoku restaurant chain — this new, “sly” twist on the cooking competition genre asks 10 chefs, ranging in skill and specialty from professionals to home cooks and social media influencers, to perform in a range of cooking challenges, all performed from the depths of a kitchen unlike any other.

The show, as complex as it is straightforward, isolates its competitors in a secret labyrinth of secluded, underground kitchens, connected only by an ongoing conveyor belt. Each chef gets a kitchen of their own, not knowing who inhabits the other nine. With no guidance from any hosts, mentors or fellow chefs, each contender has only one source for instructions: a mischievous, animated chef’s hat, which appears on screen to task the chefs with increasingly complex cooking challenges. They must rely solely on themselves as they

chop, blend and sauté towards the finish line, when their dishes disappear, whisked away on a conveyor belt.

But it doesn’t stop there. In another subversion of traditional cooking competitions, this show features no judges – at least, not exactly. At the end of the competition, the chefs will partake in a series of blind taste tests, experiencing each other’s creations firsthand as the conveyor belt moves along – all without knowing the competitor behind the dish. They must rate the presented plates based on food alone, with no knowledge of whether it was prepared by an all-star chef or a hobbyist cook. Only once a winner has been chosen will identities be revealed and the labyrinth unlocked.

Produced by Dave O’Connor (“Abstract: The Art of Design”), food writer Chris Ying and Christopher C. Chen (“Ugly Delicious”) of Majordomo Media, along with Vox Media Studios and Wheelhouse’s Spoke Studios, and helmed by showrunner Patrick J. Doody (“Nailed It!”), this unique new cooking show puts food and flavor above all else, upending expectations of chefs and viewers alike when it premieres Thursday, June 29, on Hulu.

“Is It Cake?: Season 2”

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s ... cake? With ever-advancing techniques and skilled artists dedicated to their craft, Netflix is baffling viewers once again when this fun, confectionary competition series returns with its second season. Hosted once again by “Saturday Night Live’s” Mikey Day, the series, which is part game show and part baking show, is ready to put more celebrity judges’ sleuthing skills to the test as talented, hyper-realistic cake makers put their sweet creations next to everyday objects that are identical in almost every way — except, of course, for the fact that one is edible and one is not.

Roger Moore knew how to ‘Live’ as James Bond

Sean Connery’s first successor as James Bond was onetime “Agent 007” George Lazenby, but the first replacement to stick was the ever-charismatic Roger Moore … who started his run as the secret agent in “Live and Let Die,” which MGM+ shows Sunday, June 25. The 1973 adventure directed by Bond veteran Guy Hamilton (“Goldfinger”) typically takes the Ian Fleming-created hero on a globe-hopping mission, but he spends quite a bit of time in America, notably in New York – where his main lead on the deaths of several other agents is a United Nations diplomat (Yaphet Kotto). The latter relies on a medium named Solitaire for guidance, and that role marked a major career move for Jane Seymour, quite convincing as a romantic interest for Moore despite the considerable age difference between them. Also notable in the cast is David Hedison as Bond’s CIA pal Felix Leiter (he would reprise the part later opposite Timothy Dalton’s Bond in “Licence to Kill”). The title tune is by Paul McCartney and Wings.

Merle Hagrid’s target audience is people like Apedaile — those who grew up reading the Harry Potter books, but are now in their 30s and can handle some more suggestive material.

“The songs are crude, but not in a way that’s vulgar,” Apedaile said. “I wanted to make people laugh and catch weird references from these books they read when they were younger. It’s kind of like nostalgia, but an adult-themed experience.”

He tested the act out with his wizard cape and first song, “Dirty Little Horcrux,” during a Bozeman visit in 2018. It was a hit with audiences.

The project has since grown to include Apedaile’s brother, Tevin, a Belgrade-based drummer who will perform as “Albus Drumbledre” and Paul Bennett (who has yet to land on a character for this show) on bass.

“I was a true believer from the very beginning,” Tevin said on Monday. “At its source it’s just preaching love and goodness into the world. And country music. Everybody could use some more of that.”

Sets usually start with “They Call Him Harry for a Reason,” which features a “spooky Harry Potter intro.” Readings from the books are common, and reverence is given to the text. Apedaile, however, has started to separate the world of Harry Potter from its author, citing J.K. Rowling’s “transphobic tendencies.”

“It’s really unfortunate,” he said. “It hasn’t quite happened yet, but I wanted to write a song about how the characters’ views don’t reflect those of the author, just to have a fun time and use these characters and likenesses to still be inclusive.”

Other songs include “It Ain’t Easy Being the Big Guy” and “Forbidden Forest,” where Hagrid is putting himself out on a dating app. Songs are not riffs on Haggard songs, but draw stylistic inspiration from them. An album

is not out of the question in the future.

First, however, Apedaile wants to record albums as Eneferens and another yet-to-be-named project.

Eneferens is billed as atmospheric and melodic death metal. A more raw, low-fi metal project is known as Hyalithe. Solo acoustic sets aren’t out of the question in the repertoire. And then there’s Merle Hagrid.

doesn’t try to pigeonhole the ideas that come to him.

“The music speaks for itself,” he said. “I don’t have full conscious control over it. It kind of comes out and I deal with it from there.”

Lately, Apedaile has been struggling to put out Eneferens’ record. While metal and punk were his first musical loves, his listening interests have leaned more toward melodic pop and indie music of late.

“That’s a whole category that’s kind of hidden for now and a lot of things have been going into that folder,” he said.

“I’ve always struggled with musical identity in general,” Apedaile said. “I feel like there’s so much I want to do that I can’t fit in the confines of only one project.”

“There’s so many different forms of expression,” Apedaile said.

To write, Apedaile will mic up his guitar and open a recording session on his computer. He

In part, the shift is prompted by vocals. Apedaile wants to sing more and scream less. And he wants it to be fun.

“If my being silly makes them want to listen to me less, I think that’s totally fine,” Apedaile said. “I’m a whole complex human being.”

Age is just a number for Goldschmidt

Only a few names resonate with consistency and grit, but at the age of 35, Paul Goldschmidt has some doubters questioning whether his best days are behind him. Currently, the St. Louis Cardinals hold a 25-35 won-lost record with a 14-18 record on the road. Despite the less-thanideal start to the season, the Cardinals are third in total home runs with 80 on the year — 10 of those coming from Goldschmidt.

Goldschmidt was traded to the Cardinals back in 2019 after a successful stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks, helping kickstart his career. Since his arrival in St. Louis, he’s been a vital part of the team by adding more all-star and Silver Slugger awards to his resume. At this point in his career, Goldschmidt is well known for his power at the plate and defensive awareness, establishing himself as one of the most consistent offensive and defensive threats in Major League Baseball.

Answers:

While the team struggles to establish a winning record, it doesn’t seem to have bothered the first baseman. Goldschmidt currently ranks 18th in batting average. His on-base percentage ranks ninth and he’s 19th in the league in slugging (.615 in his last 10 games).

Putting the team on his back for much of the year, Goldschmidt has single-handedly made strong plays throughout the season, scoring in 28 games this year (48.3%), including multiple runs in nine games. Goldschmidt has had at least one RBI in 27.6% of his games this season (16 of 58), and accounts for three or more of his team’s runs in one game.

Currently sitting at the bottom of the NL Central (fifth), Goldschmidt and the Cardinals will look to get back to their winning ways as they take on the Chicago Cubs. Catch all the action Sunday, June 25, live on ESPN.
