‘Saying the unsayable’ Feminist icon Difranco to perform in Bozeman
DiFranco’s music evolves as she does
RACHEL HERGETT
For the Chronicle
While the release of live album “Living in Clip” on the heels of yearly studio records didn’t seem signi cant in 1997, the passage of time and the connections it made with fans make the album feel sentimental for musician Ani DiFranco. “Certainly, the 25-year anniversary makes me check in with how long the road has been and how many people have gathered in community around my music over the years,” DiFranco said over the phone from her home in New Orleans in February.
DiFranco will be performing at the Elm in Bozeman on Wednesday, March 22, at 8 p.m. with support from Pieta Brown. Since last year, DiFranco’s tour dates have been in celebration of “Living in Clip,” which was reissued in July by her label Righteous Babe Records.
“Twenty- ve years later, the album is recognized as a point of entry that radically expanded DiFranco’s audience and a historically important testament to the relationship between Ani as a live performer and the devoted community she created with her fans,” according to a press release for the show.
DiFranco founded Righteous Babe Records in 1990, selling cassette tapes out of her car to walk her own path and avoid the corporate bureaucracy of the major label system. On the label’s website, DiFranco calls the label “a people-friendly, sub-corporate, woman-informed, queer-happy small business that puts music before rock stardom and ideology before pro t.”
“Little Plastic Castle,” DiFranco’s 1998 studio album, is also getting a 25th anniversary re-release from Righteous Babe Records in June.
A proli c songwriter, DiFranco has
an extensive catalog to match, with more than 20 studio albums to her name. In performance, this means she is not able to play every song her fans want to hear. About 80 can live in her head at any given time, DiFranco said. She counted. But she still loves to hear the requests.
“People come from all di erent directions and they get on board at all di erent times for all di erent reasons,” she said. “ ey’re bringing themselves and their lives to the table too. It’s so interesting to me. It feels like every request — well not every — but so many are a surprise. ‘Really, that song? I haven’t played that in 30 years!’”
Songs DiFranco played 25 or more years ago are not the same now. ey evolve as she evolves.
“Even the same words, the same song played by a very di erent person has a di erent meaning,” she said.
DANNY CLINCH
Now in her 50s and taking on a variety of new projects, DiFranco said she’s more tired than she used to be, and doesn’t burn with the same intensity.
“Back in the day I would release two albums a year,” she said. “I was unstoppable. Now I’m very stoppable.”
DiFranco juggles raising kids — she as two, ages 10 and 16 — and a second virtually full-time o ce job of running a label and her desire to explore other projects with touring.
Memoir “No Walls and the Recurring Dream” was a New York Times Bestseller in 2019. Her rst picture book for children,” e Knowing,” features watercolor illustrations by Julia Mathew. DiFranco welcomed the challenge of nding her voice without the double meanings, social references and metaphors she relies on in songwriting.

BY GEORGE DICKIE
Q: You attended the 200th episode celebration, correct?
A: Yes, and that was surreal. Talk about walking onto a set where everybody’s been working together for so long. I think it was my fourth episode ... . But yeah, it just really reinforced the idea that so many people are working in front and behind the cameras together to bring this to life. I mean, there were just so many people in the war room that day gathered around that 200th episode cake and (they) had (showrunner) John Eisendrath fly in and speak and to have James (Spader) say a few words that really cemented that feeling of being part of a family. Like people have gone through so much over the years while filming this show and yeah, it just makes me feel so special to come in for the final season.
Q: Did you get to meet the actress who played your character’s mother in Season 1, Parminder Nagra, yet?
A: I have not had the chance to meet her but when I was in primary school, that film “Bend It Like Beckham” came out and I just remember thinking, “If she can do it, I can do it.” (Laughs) And ever since then, I’ve been following her career and she’s one of the South Asian actresses I grew up watching who reminded me that there is a place for us on the screen. So it would be a dream come true to meet her. I really hope I do get to.

Dining off the grid and away from it all on Nat Geo’s ‘Restaurants at the End of the World’
Kristen Kish readily admits she was never much of a traveler and as a businesswoman has a real problem with giving up control. So her experiences making the National Geographic docuseries “Restaurants at the End of the World” were more than a few steps out of her comfort zone.
Premiering Tuesday, March 21, the four-part series follows chef and restaurateur Kish as she visits some of the world’s most remote restaurants in Panama, Norway, Brazil and Maine and meets the chefs and people who keep them going.
These are eateries that are far off the grid, so traditional supply lines for them are non-existent. So these tenacious and imaginative chefs/ restaurateurs take what nature and local suppliers such as farmers and herders give them to create one-of-a-kind meals and menus for guests who themselves are culinary adventurers.
Kish embedded herself with these folks to listen to their stories, follow their thought processes and observe the day-to-day balancing act it takes to bring their unique fare to the table, which she found helpful in her own kitchen.
“Like we were developing dishes hours before the guests were coming ...,” she says. “You know, the way I come up with dishes before I serve
them, I test them, we work through them, we taste them, we give notes, we edit and like a few weeks later it finally hits the menu.
“This was like, ‘Oh well, we have the same (ingredient), we have this but like maybe we can’t get this so we’ll just try something else. And I went, ‘Oh my God! OK.’ So the idea of experimentation without fear is something that I definitely had taken with me and I will try to continue taking with me as a constant reminder.”
But the ceding of control was another matter. As a chef and restaurateur, Kish is a meticulous planner and likes to maintain control over as much as she can. So the idea of giving that up to Mother Nature was anathema to her.
“The commonality between all of them,” she says, “is the fact that they relinquished so much control to their environment, to what will happen will happen or ‘You know what? I really have this dream and I’m just going to go for it. I’ll figure out the details later.’ And that’s just completely opposite to how I live my life and set up my business.”
“It was crazy to me! Like why even?” she continues. “I want to control every little aspect to ensure the guest has the experience that I want them to have. But sometimes the guest wants that adventure in the sense of uncertainty as well.”
Kristen Kish

‘Mod Squad’ makes crime-solving groovy again
Apparently the last drama series to receive an all-weekend “Binge” on Decades – which will be rebranded as the Catchy Comedy Network on March 27 – “Mod Squad” gets a 42-hour showcase starting Saturday, March 25. Produced by Aaron Spelling and Danny Thomas, the show was highly reflective of its era, the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Michael Cole, Clarence Williams III and Peggy Lipton play Pete, Linc and Julie, three young people recruited by police captain Adam Greer (Tige Andrews) to probe then-contemporary crimes often involving others of their age. A big hit in its time, the program benefited greatly from the easy camaraderie among its stars, who got back together for a 1979 TV-movie sequel.

“ e Knowing” was released by Penguin Kids on March 7.
ough these and other projects emerge from time to time, DiFranco keeps coming back to music.
“I still love it,” she said. “I love writing songs. I love playing and singing. I love performing and connecting with people. Every aspect of the job is really cool. I’m not over it yet.”
DiFranco calls herself the “little folksinger,” which may say more about her lyrical content than the actual genre of music. Like
IF YOU GO ...
Singer/songwriter/feminist/activist/author Ani DiFranco will be at the Elm in Bozeman on Wednesday, March 22, at 8 p.m. with support from labelmate Pieta Brown. Tickets are $35-55 plus fees at www.logjampresents.com.
folksingers of the past, she speaks to her truth in the music, expressing rage at systematic issues in this country and beyond.
“From the beginning, I’ve made a practice of saying the unsayable, the things that people avoid talking about,” DiFranco said.
“I had this will to go there in my songs.”
e title track of 1999’s “To
the Teeth,” for example, references school shootings, calling guns “tools of rage.” And while DiFranco may have slowed, she hasn’t softened the sharpness in her words. On “Do Or Die,” from 2021’s “Revolutionary Love” album, she sings “Cuz there’s foxes in the hen house/ And bad news every day/ And right there on Pennsylvania Avenue/ e
sheetless KKK.”
Speaking up against the powerful has not been easy, though it has earned her a reputation as a feminist icon and activist. DiFranco admits she has been “very afraid” of how people may react to her words over the years. She doesn’t let it stop her, however, musically or in life. DiFranco will walk the streets of New Orleans alone at night — if that’s what she wants to do.
“Having the fear that’s inherent in this world prevent me from living my life and standing in my truth is just too far,” she said.
“ en they’ve won.”
ough DiFranco’s music has
spawned various versions of pushback, shaming and criticism since the start of her career, she chooses to focus on the response of fans.
“ e joy, the release and the healing” of authenticity is an antithesis to a world that is often unkind.
When asked about the most important causes that need our attention, DiFranco acknowledges that it may be useful to divide the world into single issues, but she does not see it that way.
“For me, it’s all one thing,” DiFranco said. “ e world should be fair and the world should be kind. Everybody should be taken care of or none of us.”

Here comes Judge – and the Yankees – in ‘23
Aaron Judge had a season for the ages in 2022, his 62 home runs surpassing Roger Maris’ American League mark of 61 in 1961. And that was followed by a contract to match.
No, the New York Yankees weren’t about to let their superstar center fielder walk to the San Francisco Giants or anywhere else in free agency, so they secured him through his age 39 season with a nine-year, $360 million contract.
The 2022 AL MVP has been a stalwart since arriving full time at Yankee Stadium in 2017, hitting a then-rookie record of 52 homers to go with 114 RBIs, a .284 average, a .422 on-base percentage and an OPS of 1.049. Rookie of the Year honors would follow, to go along with his first Silver Slugger Award and All-Star appearance.
But that would pale in comparison to his 2022 campaign in which his 62 homers, league-leading 131 RBI, .311 average, .425 on-base percentage and 1.111 OPS would put him in the record books alongside Maris, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle as an all-time Yankee great.
Now it’s 2023 and as is usually the case in the Bronx, the focus is on winning championships. As the team’s captain, Judge will continue to lead by example and push the team toward its ultimate goal of being the last team standing in October/November.
Judge and the Yankees can be seen in action Thursday, March 23, when they play the St. Louis Cardinals in a preseason game in Jupiter, Fla., streaming on ESPN+.
