Often, Bozeman-based theater company Nervous eatre explores classic texts and devises new ways of staging those stories, according to founding artistic director Connor Berkompas. “Mommy’s Dead and they Buried Her in Moscow” is a reimagining of Anton Chekov’s “ ree Sisters.” “Strange Mating Calls,” which was produced at Tinworks in August 2021 with Bozeman Actors eatre, was an update of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1968 lm “Teorema.” “ e Maids,”

a contemporary adaptation of Jean Genet’s play, was named touring production of the year by Bozeman Magazine in 2021. It toured San Diego, Seattle and Bozeman in early 2020 with a scattered collective of performers. Bertolt Brecht and Samuel Beckett have also gotten the Nervous eatre treatment.
“A Marvelous Party,” which will take over Echo Arts for three performances this weekend, is something entirely different. The piece is described on the Nervous Theatre website as a “workin-process, a theatrical event exploring the ways we gather and
collectively transform.”
Rather than starting with an existing piece and guring out how best to bring it to some form of stage, Berkompas and company members Melissa Dawn, Annabella Joy and Isabel Shaida holed up at Surel’s Place in a suburb of Boise, Idaho, with the intention of crafting a piece that digs into collective imagination.
Working with physical movements and space explorations, the creators dug into a series of questions and then into questions that followed the initial set. ese, Shaida said, included “What does it mean to gather together? What does it feel
like to gather, to be in the company of others? When are we alone? When are we with others? Why do we seek out company? Why do we seek out aloneness?”

Q: As your “Mayans M.C.” character — biker-group chapter president Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes — nears the end of his journey on the series as the fifth and final season starts, how do you see his arc?
A: Especially when I think about it, when it comes to EZ, it’s in these dark places that there’s a sense like an awakening that happens. It’s like you almost have to go through the fire, and experience the lowest of the lows, to understand who you are and to test it. I think that that’s where you find these characters.
Q: What do you think EZ represents on the broader scale of the human condition?
ENOUGH TO
A: It’s like a lot of times, we use people or situations as excuses and crutches because we are afraid to be who we are. We are afraid to acknowledge who we might be.
What I have always loved about “Mayans M.C.,” and it’s a separation from “Sons of Anarchy” and other shows of this nature, is that this isn’t a character that just goes into prison and spends time there and comes out and it’s like, “Oh, it is just another day.” It is the story of this human being who goes to prison and who is transformed by it, who is traumatized by it, who carries that with him every day.
Q: How do you think that manifests itself in who we now see EZ to be?
A: He lost a bit of himself in there. He “died” in there. So, EZ has always been trying to go back to this place to regain who he used to be, when that’s just not the truth anymore.

Ramsay returns: Gordon entices entrepreneurs in ‘Food Stars’
He’s been around for decades, but fans have yet to tire of the brutal honesty, invaluable tips and delicious recipes that superstar chef Gordon Ramsay serves. With shows such as “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” and “Gordon Ramsay Uncharted,” the Scottish chef has traveled to share his experience worldwide. Now, Ramsay is on the hunt for the next big name in food. “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars” premieres Wednesday, May 24, on Fox, following the Season 13 premiere of “MasterChef.”
In this new series, Gordon makes his way out of the kitchen and into the boardroom, trading in his cast iron skillet and cutting board for revenue reports and marketing meetings, this time putting his own wallet on the line. An American adaptation of the British TV series, “Gordon Ramsay’s Future Food Stars,” the show follows Ramsay as he looks to find the next culinary entrepreneur he’d like to (personally) financially support, offering the most impressive contestant $250,000 to follow their dreams.
Ramsay tests these hopeful entrepreneurs in every facet of running a successful business, challenging contestants at every phase of production, from initial marketing to product development.
“The aspiring moguls will be challenged in all aspects of running a food enterprise, including creating, marketing and selling to real customers.
... As Ramsay pushes contestants to their limits, they’ll have to prove they possess the raw ingredients required to succeed – drive, dedication, creativity, passion and talent,” Fox said of the series in a news release.
Ramsay explained further in an interview with Variety: “I’ve hand-picked some of the most promising culinary innovators to compete for not only my investment but my partnership in business. They will have to hustle through tough challenges, break through and set themselves apart from the other competition, and make noise to prove they have what it takes to be successful.”
Joining this season’s inaugural competition are: Aaron Valentine, founder of Snow Cone King; Caroline D’Amore, CEO of Pizza Girl Inc.; Elisa Strauss, owner of Confetti Cakes; Jake Aronskind, founder of the cooking app Pepper; Kagen Cox, owner of Kagen Coffee & Crepes; Lan Ho, owner of Fat Miilk; Queen Precious-Jewel Zabriskie, spice purveyor of Indulgent Essential Spices; Sydney Webb, co-founder of Toto Foods, Inc., and more.

MeTV offers a ‘M*A*S*H’ salute to Harry Morgan
Veteran character actor Harry Morgan was very much a part of the heart and soul of “M*A*S*H” during the years he was on the Korean War-set sitcom, and many of his episodes are presented as his character — Col. Sherman Potter — is showcased as MeTV’s month-long “M*A*S*H Maydays” festival continues Monday, May 22, through Friday, May 26.
Though he had to seem as if he disapproved of the antics of such medics within his Korean War oversight as Hawkeye Pierce and B.J. Hunnicutt (Alan Alda, Mike Farrell), Potter often was chuckling because of them when he couldn’t be seen doing so. However, one of his best stories here (shown on Thursday) is the bittersweet “Old Soldiers,” in which he returns from a trip that he keeps confidential ... until he reveals the deeply touching reason for it.

“There’s a quality of finding the theatricality in our everyday spaces that is really wonderful and joyful,” Shaida said.
After initial performances at Surel’s Place, Nervous Theatre brought “A Marvelous Party” to Verge Theater’s space in the Emerson in Bozeman. Now, they’re staging it once again, a last hurrah of sorts for Echo Arts’ north Bozeman gallery space that fits directly into the focus on community engagement. Echo Arts will reopen in a new location later this year, according to Greta Hagg and Sahra Beaupré, who run the arts advertising agency, gallery and event space.
“The key player in all these iterations — in Boise, at Verge and here of course — the space itself has been our starting point,” Berkompas said during an interview at Echo Arts, where he and Shaida were contemplating the space, covering the windows and playing with lights.
As a director and performer, Berkompas leans into “theatrical experiences” for the viewers that go well beyond sitting in the dark waiting for the performance to begin. He wants to create a community with them, not exclusive of them.
“The audience or participants are very much a part of the world that is being created that night,” he said.
For the audience, the piece begins as they enter Echo Arts.
“They’re encountering an empty gallery space when they first arrive,” Berkompas said. “So they’re having to make a choice with how they’re going to interact with the environment before the piece has even started.”
Maybe they’ll go to the bar, where Berkompas may be serving wine provided by Mischa’s, a gourmet food store down the street. Maybe they’ll mingle and find a seat at the scattered chairs or couches. At

some point, their actions will be interrupted by performance as company members go back and forth between allowing the audience to sit and watch or becoming part of the scene.
The company shies away from calling the piece “interactive theater.” There are some negative
connotations there, with audience members being called up on stage, singled out and embarrassed.
“The audience is necessary for us to be able to continue the next thing,” Shaida said. “And we take care of you through that. We’re not going to ask you to jump
into the deep end, rather we’re going to learn together how to participate.”
They may sit next to an audience member or ask them to move orientation so company members can change the space around them for the next vignette. They may be given a task to help in the transition between scenes.
“We’re not just interested in showing you what we have,” Shaida said. “We’re interested in conspiring with the audience in a way.”
Audience members become participants, invited into the questioning inherent in the
performance. They may question whether they become part of the company or question their own reaction when faced with a direct interaction.
“The audience is not an afterthought,” Berkompas said. “They are on the forefront of our minds every step of the way. What is their experience of this going to be?”
Nervous Theatre wants to explore those questions together.
“Getting to be with 20 to 40 people every time you perform this piece has been an incredibly uplifting thing and it makes me hopeful to be a part of this community,” Shaida said.

Verstappen is in it to win it
At just 25 years old, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has already made his mark in the racing world, taking home the F1 World Drivers’ Championship two years in a row, in 2021 and 2022. Verstappen shows no sign of slowing down in 2023 as the racing season starts to ramp up.
The son of two racing drivers, many would agree that Verstappen has a “need for speed” in his blood. He began competing at the junior level in 2006 and, by 2014, had risen to the professional level, becoming the youngest driver in history to complete in an F1 racing weekend. By the end of the season the next year, Verstappen had taken the title of F1A Rookie of the Year, cementing his place in the racing world.
In 2016, Verstappen signed with Red Bull Racing, the team he currently drives for. Since signing, Verstappen has clinched several awards and championships and then dominated the 2022 racing season. Verstappen has taken that energy into the 2023 season, as he’s currently ranked the top driver in Formula 1 racing just a few rounds in.
Racing fans and experts noticed that throughout 2022, Verstappen’s style and skill were bumped to the next level compared to previous seasons. Some noted that winning the championship title in 2021 gave Verstappen a boost of confidence that worked its way into his driving. He found a way to be both energetic and relaxed, helping him win 15 races out of 22 and take home his second consecutive drivers’ championship.
Answers:
Even though the 2023 season just started in March, Verstappen has already won two of the first four, taking the top spot in the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Australia Grand Prix and second in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan. Currently, Verstappen has 93 points (six more than teammate Sergio Perez) heading into the coming races. Red Bull Racing has 180 points, leading the Constructor Championship standings ahead of teams Aston Martin (87) and Mercedes (76). Verstappen is slated to race in the Italian Grand Prix, with ESPN2 providing live coverage on Sunday, May 21; and in the Monaco Grand Prix, which will air live on ABC Sunday, May 28.
Verstappen is a fan favorite worldwide — especially with his Dutch countrymen in the Netherlands. He was voted the most popular F1 driver in 2021 and consistently fills dedicated sections of Grand Prix grandstands with excited fans. If the 2023 season is to be anything like Verstappen’s last couple of seasons, fans will surely be in for a heart-racing schedule of races with Max Verstappen leading the way.
