out’ Sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll ... and puppets

Bozeman’s own cult classic

“If I can say one thing that ‘Freak Out’ is, it’s ‘spectacle,’” Sadie Cassavaugh tells me on Monday. “We’re celebrating hedonism and comedy and the right to be freaky.” Sadie is one of my closest friends, the type of friend who you take to the hospital for moral support when a loved one ends up there, or who brings you care packages when you end up there. And on Monday she crashed the meeting I had set up with her husband, Ryan, to talk about one of their passion projects, the original puppet musical “Freak Out.” Ryan wrote the script and lyrics. Sadie directs. I had intended to ask them separately, but enjoyed the united front and her joy at getting to spend a little moment with me amid the chaos of mounting a show.

I have been wanting to write about “Freak Out” since it came to life in 2017, but declined because I was, well, too close to the subject.

I became friends with the Cassavaughs through a shared love of theater. At the inception of “Freak Out,” the Cassavaughs had been throwing

their immense creativity into a series of adult puppet shows. Each was based on some sort of cult horror and each was based in a decade. I made props for them, painted sets, costumed hand puppets.

Then, in 2017, Sadie taught me the basics behind how they create their life-sized puppets, giving me some supplies and free reign to create a “creepy” demon baby. While I mourn that no one gets to see my own creativity in the spider body with claws on each arm and tufts of hair that give me the willies just thinking about them, I am happy to report that the head of the thing is still the head of the thing. Between the time this goes to print and the latest production opens on Friday, I may have even spent some time with some glue and sparkles, updating the thing.

What’s Available NOW On

“Lainey Wilson: Bell Bottom Country” (May 29)

A decade after embarking on her journey from a rural farming town to pursue her dreams in Nashville, Tennessee, country music sensation Lainey Wilson achieved a remarkable milestone with her first platinum-certified song. This special promises an intimate look into her life and features exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpses from her debut headline shows, candid interviews with Wilson and her loved ones, and much more.

“The Promised Land” (May 30)

This biographical drama, set in the 1700s, tells the story of Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen), who pursued his lifelong dream: to make the heath bring him wealth and honor.

“Sympathy for the Devil” (May 31)

After being forced to drive a mysterious passenger (Nicolas Cage) at gunpoint, a man (Joel Kinnaman) finds himself in a highstakes game of cat and mouse where it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.

Jamie Foxx may be happier than ever to be back with “Beat Shazam.”

The Oscar-winning actor, comedian and musician had an unspecified medical emergency and subsequent hospitalization last year, but he returns — along with his daughter Corinne (“Dollface”) — to preside over the Fox game show when it begins its seventh season Tuesday, May 28. Two-person teams try to identify songs, with the highest-scoring duo then going up against the music app Shazam for a chance to win $1 million. This season, some teams will consist of fathers, mothers, siblings, teachers and others who have a shared identity.

Also an executive producer of “Beat Shazam,” Jamie Foxx might have seemed a surprising person to fill the hosting job when the show premiered in 2017. By that point, Foxx was a well-established movie star, having won an Academy Award and many other honors for his portrayal of music icon Ray Charles in “Ray” (2004). He also had a 2007 Grammy for his collaboration with T-Pain on “Blame It.”

However, taking a job on the Fox network was a homecoming of sorts for Foxx, since he had been a cast member of the sketch comedy series “In Living Color” in the early 1990s. He also appeared in the Fox show “Roc,” then parlayed those experiences into his own sitcom for the thenWB Network, the appropriately named “The Jamie Foxx Show.”

During that weekly TV tenure for him, Foxx was also cementing his movie work with such credits as the Oliver Stone-directed football drama “Any Given Sunday” (1999) and the melodrama “Collateral” (2004). He was also building a musical identity, by working with the likes of Kanye West (“Runaway”) and Ludacris (“Get Back”), establishing his own success in that field via such albums as “Intuition” and “Best Night of My Life.”

“T.I.M.” (May 31)

Prosthetics engineer Abi (Georgina Campbell) begins work on her company’s latest product, an A.I. humanoid called T.I.M. (Eamon Farren) — Technologically. Integrated. Manservant. Things take a turn for the worse when T.I.M.’s programming leads to a dangerous obsession with Abi.

With “Beat Shazam” now resuming, Foxx gets to satisfy multiple entertainment-business roles for himself again — and, best of all, to do it with much-improved health.

Birthdate: Dec. 13, 1967

Birthplace: Terrell, Texas

Current residence: Los Angeles

Marital status: Single; has two daughters, including his “Beat Shazam” co-host Corinne

Movie credits include: “Strays,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Soul,” “Just Mercy,” “Robin Hood,” “Baby Driver,” “Sleepless,” “Annie,” “Horrible Bosses,” “Horrible Bosses 2,” “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” “Rio,” “Rio 2,” “White House Down,” “Django Unchained,” “Due Date,” “Valentine’s Day,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” “The Soloist,” “The Kingdom,” “Dreamgirls,” “Miami Vice,” “Jarhead,” “Stealth,” “Ray,” “Collateral,” “Breakin’ All the Rules,” “Bait,” “Ali,” “Held Up,” “Any Given Sunday,” “The Players Club,” “Booty Call,” “The Great White Hype,” “The Truth About Cats & Dogs,” “Toys”

Other television credits include: “White Famous,” “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” “Jackie Robinson,” “Sesame Street,” “Elmo’s Christmas Countdown,” “Chappelle’s Show,” “Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story,” “Jamie Foxx Unleashed: Lost, Stolen and Leaked!,” “Jamie Foxx: I Might Need Security,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Jamie Foxx Show,” “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “Moesha,” “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper,” “Jamie Foxx: Straight From the Foxxhole,” “Roc,” “In Living Color”

Once upon a time, Batman and Superman used to be fun ... in the way that many of the Marvel characters have been in their movies. The DC Comics universe definitely began going for the darker side in its screen ventures. Rarely is that more evident than in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which doesn’t exactly put the heroes in league with each other. That’s much of the problem with the film, which HBO shows Monday, May 27. Though there was a long and anticipation-packed wait for it, the movie frequently seems like a really long tease for others that would come later in the franchise. Here, we get Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne/Batman resenting Henry Cavill’s Superman for aftereffects of the climax of “Man of Steel,” which also was directed by this film’s Zack Snyder. That’s principally where the title’s “v” comes into play.

Even politicians are on the case of Krypton’s favorite son, including the one played by Holly Hunter. They’re concerned with what the immense power of Superman could mean destructively, rather than positively, for the world – and along with the familiar scheming of Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg, who’s ideal for the part), it’s enough to make a superhero reconsider saving humanity.

The same goes for Batman, though he’s working on a more localized level, his focus and abilities being more earthly. As one of many Caped Crusaders to inhabit the screen, Affleck has the brooding down perfectly, if indeed there must be this much brooding. And Cavill continues to fill his often-airborne suit admirably, both physically and in acting terms.

The freshest breath here is Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, who later got her own movies (the first of those, in fact, was in production at the time this one was released). Amy Adams is back from “Man of Steel” as Lois Lane, and Jeremy Irons makes a terrific butler Alfred.

OF YOUNG SHELDON ON CBS

Q: With “Young Sheldon” over, what will Iain Armitage do next?

A: The young actor – who turns 16 in July, and has posted on social media that he’ll be getting his pilot’s license – didn’t have definite professional plans at the time this was written, though having had a weekly series commitment for the past seven years (minus last year’s actors’ strike), we suspect that something of a more regular school schedule might be in his immediate future. Of course, there was tutoring on the set of his just-ended CBS series, but it’s not the same goingto-class situation that most youngsters experience.

Armitage has built such an identity with viewers as the youthful incarnation of brainy Sheldon Cooper, also of “The Big Bang Theory” fame, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of role he tackles next and how soon. When identification with one character is that strong, the given performer sometimes waits a while before trying something else, so the audience has a chance to recalibrate and accept the actor as someone else.

Still, Armitage came into “Young Sheldon” already having notable acting experience. He had such television credits as HBO’s “Big Little Lies” (as the Shailene Woodley character’s son) and NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Additionally, Armitage worked on such films as “Scoob!” (as the voice of the young Shaggy, of the “Scooby-Doo” franchise) and “PAW Patrol: The Movie,” as well as “The Glass Castle” and “Our Souls at Night.” Armitage – who speaks Russian fluently, possibly opening him up to roles of that nationality – is the grandson of Richard Armitage, who served as a deputy secretary of state in the administration of President George W. Bush.

If you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen — because things are starting to boil. Returning for its 14th season (with a brand-new theme that puts chefs young and old to the task) “MasterChef: Gener ations” premieres Wednesday, May 29, on Fox. Last season, superstar chef Gordon Ramsay (“Hell’s Kitchen”), acclaimed chef Aarón Sánchez (“Heat Seekers”) and renowned restaurateur Joe Bastianich (“Bastianich, Keep Rocking,” 2019) joined forces to put chefs through a marathon of cooking inspired by the “United Tastes of America,” which divided chefs by regional styles of cuisine from across the country.

‘The Princess Bride’ continues to make magic

Director Rob Reiner’s enduringly popular 1987 fantasy “The Princess Bride” – which Freeform shows Friday, May 31 – is magical in its look as well as its story, having been filmed across England and also in Ireland. Adapted by veteran screenwriter William Goldman from his own novel, the story-around-the-story finds a senior citizen ([played by Peter Falk) telling his grandson (Fred Savage) the saga of the lovely Buttercup (Robin Wright), who appears destined to become the wife of a sinister prince (Chris Sarandon) though she truly loves a farm worker (Cary Elwes).

Her kidnapping sends would-be rescuers in pursuit, sometimes in conflict with one anothet, and they encounter plenty of unusual characters along the way. Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, Peter Cook and Carol Kane also are among cast members of this much-beloved attraction, which has enchanted several generations and is certain to continue to captivate many more as time goes on.

Jannik Sinner in search of his second career Grand Slam at Roland Garros

The tennis world returns to familiar grounds at Roland Garros in Paris, when the 2024 French Open gets underway Sunday, May 26. The opening rounds air live on NBC.

Ready to serve fans another world-class performance, Italy’s Jannik Sinner has his eyes set on competing for his second career major. In the midst of a season to remember, the 22-year-old is holding a career-high ranking of world No. 2, while also becoming the highest-ranked Italian tennis player to ever hit the courts.

Proving beyond a doubt that he has what it takes to compete with the best of the best, Sinner has already won three titles in 2024 — including his first Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open, his second ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells title and the Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands — entering the month of May with an impressive 28-2 record.

With expectations seemingly growing with each victory, Sinner discussed in an interview with Vogue magazine about dealing with the pressures of moving up in the tennis rankings.

“The pressure, you have to take it in a positive way,” Sinner said. “You have to be kind with the pressure. You have to make friendship. If you hate this pressure, it’s the wrong spot for you, no? The really good and positive thing about tennis is you have this momentum. The momentum can be positive, happy. And can be negative when you lose. But you live in a momentum. In my mind, everything goes quite fast.”

Having lost only four matches since his defeat at the U.S. Open back in September, look for Sinner to come out on fire in the early rounds as he looks to continue etching his name into the history books in search of his second Grand Slam victory.

So what is “Freak Out?” It is exactly the spectacle that Sadie describes. It’s a spectacle of musical theater that doesn’t hold back. It’s sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. With puppets. The characters are human-sized puppets, and behind them are performers holding up the weight — and one of their arms to move the puppet’s mouth.

“Freak Out” follows a pair of bikers, who end up embroiled in a Satanic cult and have to try to save the world. It’s like adult B-movie horror at its finest. Make that horror comedy and throw in a whole bunch of gags, guffaws with a wink and a nudge of the elbow at the audience. These are aided, as always, by the silent, black-clad cast members/stage hands now formerly known as “ninjas.”

The nouveau term, I’m told, is “phantom puppeteers.” It’s a title more indicative of their importance, sure, but behind the scenes, “ninja” is a hard habit to break.

The show is created for adult audiences. Expect drug references, puppet genitalia and even puppet death. Sadie finds a special glee in puppet murder and how the humor quells the horror.

North Woods by Daniel Mason. If your Book Club is looking for a literary novel, this is it. The story begins in 1760 and centers around one home in western Massachusetts. Apples are a constant, and symbolic of different things. The author tells the stories of the many inhabitants, chronologically. The reader will see the connections and even take a glimpse into the future.

This production of “Freak Out” is a celebration of Joe Knapp, the late Bozeman songwriter who is behind the music. Knapp’s likeness is on stage, in a set piece designed by local artist Marla Goodman.

“All of the catchy tunes are him,” Ryan said. “I wrote the words, but all that catchy music is Joe. He was the heart and soul of the whole enterprise.”

Ryan keeps time on drums. He has filled out the band with Luke Flansburg on guitar, Joe Kirshner on keys and John Sanders on bass, all friends of Knapp and members of Pinky and the Floyd, a Pink Floyd

All the Glimmering Stars by Mark Sullivan. Inspired by a true story, two teens kidnapped by an African warlord find salvation through love in a powerful and healing historical novel from the LOCAL author of “Beneath a Scarlet Sky” and “The Last Green Valley.”

Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom. Crow Mary is a novel that is based on the true story of an indigenous woman named Goes First, also known as Crow Mary, from Montana’s

passing time on road trips with your puppet friends — this is a great quality, the most important quality even.

In 2017, the show was mounted at the Verge Theater. It was always a wonder to see what people could fit on the tiny stage of the then-North Seventh Avenue black box, though at times I feared for the life of the band perched on a rickety set of risers that seemed to be balancing on the stage’s many levels. The show itself was a different wonder altogether. And when it opened, word spread quickly.

fans, myself included, kept asking, begging for the show to be remounted. Knapp himself asked every time he saw Sadie.

“We always thought we’d bring it back just as soon as we could,” she said. “And then of course, Joe passed away and that just made everything feel different.”

tribute band. It seems fitting, with some of the show’s 14 songs taking heavy influence from the British group and its psychedelic experimentation… in music. Others flow through influences and genres that defined the era.

As a fan of musicals, this one slays. I had an idea to listen to the soundtrack (which is available on Bandcamp and Spotify) as I wrote this piece, an idea that failed miserably. I am sucked into the story through those dang “catchy tunes.” I want to sing along. For many activities — like impromptu dance parties, singing in the shower, or

The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff. This propulsive, darkly comedic feminist thriller is about a woman named Geeta whose abusive husband walked out on her five years ago. Why does everyone in her remote village in India think she killed him?

“By the end of the play’s third performance in 2017, the entire rest of the three-week run was sold out,” Melissa Loveridge wrote in the Ruckus in 2019. The self-produced, slim-cased album was the 10th best-selling album of 2017 at the store.

“Freak Out” would continue to sell out, with rowdy crowds filling the Rialto for runs in 2018 and 2019. Bozeman Magazine lauded the production in its ‘Best of Bozeman’ each year.

After each production, the set and the puppets are packed in a trailer to wait for their next chance on stage. The intention, Sadie tells me, has always been to create a larger audience for “Freak Out.” In the midst of pandemic lockdowns,

that helped her through the traumas of the untimely deaths of her sister and mother. Alternating with Ava’s story is that of her troubled daughter Maggie.

The Hunter by Tana French. Ireland. Current day. A retired policeman from Chicago tries to settle in and find peace. He’s fostered a relationship with a local woman. He’s helping a nearly-feral teenage boy with an absent Dad make better choices. Then, Bio-Dad reappears.

Now feels like the right time, they tell me. It is a project that has been in the works for about six months, starting with the cast. Lives had gone in many directions. Moves were made. Babies had. Would everyone commit? Commit they did, with many, like Ryan Lawrence Flynn, pitching in to make the show even more of a spectacle. There are puppet updates, set updates, joke updates. They are called back to honor Joe, and for the love of the show that has become so special to them and the community.

Theater is a place that has been a refuge for misfits and outcasts,” Sadie said. “So why wouldn’t we make theater about misfits and outcasts, and why would they not be the heroes?”

“Freak Out” is Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25, at the Rialto in Bozeman, with shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. both nights. Tickets are available at https:// freakoutmusical.com/.
