Museum
When Scott Williams, Museum
of the Rockies’ director of exhibits, thinks about the works of Leonardo da Vinci, he can’t help but imagine what such a mind could make of the modern world.
“He was so far ahead of his time you wonder ‘if you could go back in time and bring him forward to today, what would he invent with the technology we have in our
The many sides of da Vinci
hands now?’” Williams said during a walkthrough of “Da Vinci The Exhibition,” which opens at the Museum of the Rockies on Friday, May 26, and runs through Sept. 3.
Da Vinci (1452-1519) was a Renaissance master whose “The Mona Lisa” is arguably the most famous painting in the world.
The exhibit holds a larger than life reproduction of the portrait alongside a series of studies breaking down the composition of works such as “John the Baptist” and “The Last Supper.”
Painting, however, was only a small piece of da Vinci’s brilliance. “Most people think more of his artwork and
know a little bit about his inventions,” Williams said. “I think they’ll come in here and be shocked and surprised by some of the things he was thinking about in the late 1400s.”
Developed by Aurea Exhibitions and produced by Imagine Exhibitions, “Da Vinci The Exhibition” allows visitors a hands-on exploration of the breadth of da Vinci’s exploration of subjects including anatomy, optics, art, music and time from the hand-written books, or codices, detailing his work. The exhibit has been touring the country for about eight years.
“The term ‘Renaissance man,’ or ‘Renaissance person’ really refers
to Leonardo da Vinci,” Williams said. “The knowledge, the depth of field, the diverse interests he has are reflected in the exhibit.”
According to the exhibit’s interpretive labels, none of da Vinci’s inventions were realized in his lifetime. The exhibit has brought more than 60 of da Vinci’s inventions to life, using translators and artisans to turn sketches into showpieces.
Most of the inventions in the exhibit stem from Codex Atlanticus, some 1,119 pages of text and drawings collected by Pompeo Leoni, a Milanese sculptor.

Q: As “Barry” wraps up its four-season run, how do you reflect on having had the job?
A: I was 27 when I came to Hollywood, and I got The Fonz (on “Happy Days”). And then, I was 72 when I got the call from (co-creators) and executive producers) Bill (Hader) and Alec (Berg) to be in “Barry.” I am overwhelmed that I work with these great people. I mean, every one of them. And I am overwhelmed that I continue to live my dream, actually.
Q: How have you approached your “Barry” character, acting coach Gene Cousineau?
A: Gene tries to be the best teacher he can be. And I have had the experience of holding master classes, and it is one of my favorite things. I’m not sure I know what I’m talking about, but whatever I’m feeling about what the actors in front of me are doing.
It is my pleasure to try and get them to taste something different than they came into the room with … just by pushing them a little bit. So, it goes back and forth. I take Gene with me, and I bring Henry to Gene.
Q: How did it work for you at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in making “Barry” without being in the same physical space as most of the other talents on the show?
A: It seemed like, because of the way it worked out, we were all in our pods and none of us crossed over and met other characters except for Bill. Everybody’s thread went to Bill. I missed (those) guys.

Joanna Gaines hosts new Magnolia baking competition
Lovers of puff pastries, cupcakes and scones unite! This summer is set to be full of delicious treats, as the talented Joanna Gaines welcomes hopeful bakers to the “Silos Baking Competition,” premiering Sunday, May 28, on the Magnolia Network.
Filmed in front of a live studio audience at the Gaines’ Silos shopping complex in Waco, Texas, this new baking competition takes a different approach to the usual season-long competition format, instead welcoming a rotation of guest chefs during its duration. Each episode, Gaines welcomes five baking enthusiasts to the studio stage, offering them the opportunity to craft their best dishes for a panel of guest judges, including both Andrew Zimmern (“Family Dinner”) and Zoë François (“Zoë Bakes”). One winning dish will be chosen each episode, and in the finale, the five winners from previous episodes will return to compete, vying for the title of Baking Champion, the $100,000 grand prize and the chance to have their winning confection join the summer menu at Magnolia’s Silos Baking Company. Owned by Gaines, the Silos Baking Company has been running since 2016, offering sweets and treats such as biscuits, muffins and cookies to visitors and shoppers at the Silos. Many of the recipes were developed by Gaines herself, including “the prize pig” — a savory bacon and cheddar biscuit. A designer first and foremost,
many of the owner’s concoctions bear fun names like “the shiplap cupcake.”
While this will be the designer’s first competitive baking show, it is far from her first experience working on television. Joanna hosted “Fixer Upper” and its offshoots alongside her husband, Chip, who also makes the occasional appearance in this latest venture.
Aside from that, Gaines is also the co-founder of Magnolia (and its associated Magnolia Network and Magnolia Journal, of which she is also editor-in-chief), she is a New York Times bestselling author of multiple cookbooks, and, unsurprisingly, Joanna is quite the cook herself, previously having filmed an in-home special with the Food Network, “At Home With Joanna,” in which viewers watched as she made family favorites like zucchini bread, chili, chocolate cookies and more. She now hosts “Magnolia Table With Joanna Gaines,” much in the same vein, alongside this fledgling competition.
With last summer’s one-off episode of “Silos Baking Competition: Holiday Edition” tallying more than 1.8 million views on premiere night, countless accolades and thriving businesses already under her belt, and ample experience in the kitchen, Joanna Gaines is set to impress yet again with “Silos’ Baking Competition,” premiering Sunday, May 28, on the Magnolia Network.

“I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson: Season 3”
Back for more offthe-wall and hilariously cringe-worthy content, this Emmy-winning sketch comedy series pokes fun at some of life’s most bizarre and mundane situations. Usually featuring co-creator Tim Robinson (“Saturday Night Live”) as the one who should leave, the series sees Robinson and his guest stars navigating hilariously socially awkward predicaments, from choking on hot dogs and hosting an intervention in a Garfield-themed house to uncomfortable job interviews and much more.
“Manifest: Season 4, Part 2”
Struggling in the aftermath of the devastating volcanic fissure Angelina (Holly Taylor, “The Americans”) released, the passengers face severe scrutiny in a world fueled by 828er hate. They are no longer free to solve their own Callings without constant supervision by the unscrupulous 828 Registry. Meanwhile, a mysterious accident delivers ominous warnings on a biblical scale that will further jeopardize the livelihood of all the passengers and Ben (Josh Dallas, “Once Upon a Time”) and Saanvi (Parveen Kaur, “The Strain”) attempt to collaborate with the Registry authorities.
“Movie: A Beautiful Life”
A romantic, musical journey, this new Danish film stars Danish musician Christopher (“When I Get Old”) in his first leading acting role as Elliott, a young fisherman with an extraordinary voice. When he is discovered by a successful, high-profile music manager, he soon finds himself falling for her daughter, Lilly (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, “The Last King,” 2016). As his new career and relationship with Lilly start to blossom, ghosts from his past threaten to tear it all down.
“LEGO Ninjago: Dragons Rising”
In this new computer-animated children’s series, many legendary realms have suddenly combined into one, but their union is unstable. A Spinjitzu Ninja Master must train a new generation of heroes to help find Elemental Dragons who can save the planet before the forces of evil use the same dragon energy to destroy this new world.

‘The Dirty Dozen’ strikes again for Memorial Day
When it comes to war stories, “The Dirty Dozen” ranks very high as one of the most popular ever put on film. As it also has been in many other years, the Robert Aldrich-directed 1967 adventure will be among the military themed attractions Turner Classic Movies will present for Memorial Day on Monday, May 29.
Though the picture is an ensemble piece, Lee Marvin rightfully gets top billing as a tough World War II major ordered to get 12 convicts in shape for a mission to target a gathering of high-level German officers at a French chateau. Charles Bronson, John Cassavetes, Telly Savalas, Jim Brown, Donald Sutherland and singer Trini Lopez are among those playing the incarcerated men, who may get a shot at amnesty if they survive the assignment.

The version of a bicycle, for example, seems more similar to what we now use than the pedalfree running machine that is considered to be the father of the bike. It was created by Karl von Drais in 1817, nearly 300 years after da Vinci’s death.
But there is also a diving suit, an odometer, a portable piano, a crane, a jack, a parachute and a submarine in the exhibit. Each was born from the mind of da Vinci, yet it would take hundreds of years to put many of them into use.
The mission of the Museum of the Rockies is to introduce the world to Montana and Montana to the world, and while this exhibit may seem to lean toward the former, it still hits close to home.
“There’s stuff that’s in this exhibit that ranchers out in eastern Montana use every day,” Williams said, citing pulley systems and jacks.
The museum last featured an exhibit on da Vinci 13 years ago, Williams said. It focused almost entirely on the machines, but didn’t include as many interactive pieces, or the aerial screw that’s a precursor to the helicopter in the way the rotation created lift.
“These ideas we take for granted now, he came up with over 500 years ago,” Williams said before expounding on other areas of knowledge da Vinci explored.
In the area of paleontology and Earth science, contemplating how marine fossils could be high up in the mountains, da Vinci essentially outlined the basics of plate tectonics, Williams explained.
Da Vinci was also known for military invention, and the museum’s front gallery showcases ideas such as a steampowered cannon and a mobile cannon platform — an early tank. While cannon balls and round projectiles were the norm at the time, da Vinci also imagined an aerodynamic cartridge,
very similar to the shape we now associate with bullets. Interpretive labels expound on how many of these inventions were underwritten by da Vinci’s wealthy patrons, hoping to gain status in times of war.
“For Leonardo, the mission of the artist was to explore the visible world,” one states. “He trusted only what he could verify with his eyes and all of his scientific research and writings were foundations for producing his art. While da Vinci was creating majestic paintings for wealthy merchants and nobles, he was also developing drawings for machines and other inventions also commissioned or influenced by those same patrons.”
While the ways we support artists and thinkers has changed in the last 500 years, and we haven’t been able to bring the polymath to the 21st century,
Williams hopes da Vinci’s example is inspiring.
“There may be a Leonardo da Vinci among us now who is coming up with this variety of ideas and diversity of thought,” Williams said.
”Da Vinci The Exhibition” opens at the Museum of the Rockies on Friday, May 26, with a member preview from 7 to 9 a.m., followed by general admission. On Saturday, May 27, the museum is hosting a Da Vinci-themed family day with activities that explore art and invention. The event is included in the cost of admission. The museum will also incorporate showings of documentary “Decoding da Vinci” in the Hagar Auditorium and “Galileo: The Power of the Telescope” in the Taylor Planitarium. Marcus Ericsson looks to continue Indy500 success
If you’re a fan of motorsport racing, then Marcus Ericsson is sure to ring a bell.
Born on September 2, 1990, in Kumla, Sweden, Ericsson currently competes in the NTT IndyCar Series, and since 2020 has been driving the No.8 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing. However, like all talented drivers, there is always the starting line.
Ericsson began his racing career at the early age of nine, competing in gokart racing, and working his way up the European ranks. Gaining experience and confidence, he eventually would move up to single-seater racing in 2007. Ericsson would go on that year to win the Swedish Formula BMW Championship, officially kick-starting his professional racing career.

Answers:
Following a successful rookie debut, he competed in various Formula Three series races, coming third place in 2008, and finally winning the British Formula Three Championship the following year. This would pave the track to a higher level of competition for Ericsson; joining the Formula One feeder series, GP2. After a successful three years competing in the GP2 Series, and finishing the 2013 campaign as a runner-up, it marked a pivotal moment in the Swedes racing career.
2014 would be Ericsson’s official Formula One debut. While only spending one season with his debut team, and four with Sauber, Ericsson was never able to secure a podium finish while competing in Formula One. However, it would be the experience gained that would later prove to be valuable, as his move to the IndyCar Series in 2018 would shift his career into high gear.
Joining Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and making his IndyCar Series debut in 2019, Ericsson placed 17th in Championship standings, with his best performance at Belle Isle coming in 7th, making it an exceptional debut season behind the wheel.
Looking to continue his success, Ericsson would join Chip Ganassi Racing in 2020, finishing 12th in overall standings that year, including four top-five finishes. However, 2021 would prove to be his most successful yet. He would finish the season 5th in championship standings, seven top-five finishes, 12 top-ten finishes, including coming in first place at the Indianapolis 500.
Ericsson will be looking for another victory at this years Indianapolis 500, one of the most prestigious races in the world of motorsport. The Swedes’ experience and skill will make him a strong contender for this year’s Indy 500 title.
