“The Lady Bird Diaries” (Nov. 13) Director Dawn Porter fashions this ABC News Studios documentary from 123 hours of Lady Bird Johnson’s personal and revealing audio diary, which she began in 1963, when the assassination of President Kennedy obliged her husband, Lyndon B. Johnson, to take on the “most challenging and demanding job on Earth” as the 36th President of the United States. Though Lady Bird found it distasteful to be called “First Lady,” she used the title to prove herself a savvy political strategist and propel her conservationist ideas into action, preserving natural resources for the American people.
“The League” (Available Now) “A Murder at the End of the World” (Nov. 14) With a new kind of detective at the helm, this FX mystery series follows Gen Z amateur sleuth and tech-savvy hacker Darby Hart (Emma Corrin), who, along with eight other guests, is invited by a reclusive billionaire (Clive Owen) to participate in a retreat at a remote and dazzling location. When one of the other guests is found dead, Darby must use all of her skills to prove it was murder against a tide of competing interests and before the killer takes another life.

“Drive With Swizz Beatz” Season 1 (Nov. 16) Swizz Beatz, a hip-hop legend and avid car collector, travels to car-friendly locales with his son, Nasir Dean (a.k.a. Note Marcato), where he explores the local car culture and unites two otherwise separate car clubs through a shared love of all things automotive and an understanding of what it’s like to overcome obstacles solely through willpower.
Christina Hendricks gained a lot of fame through her association with “Mad Men,” and now, she has moved on to a group of freedom-mad women. The actress is among the stars of Apple TV+’s current series adaptation of “The Buccaneers,” streaming new episodes Wednesdays. Based on Edith Wharton’s final novel, it tells the saga of several young American women sent to England for a dose of culture in the 1870s … but instead, the spirited visitors show the British a thing or two, or more. Hendricks plays Mrs. St. George, the mother of two of the travelers (Kristine Froseth, Imogen Waterhouse); Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag and Mia Threapleton portray the other rule-bending “Buccaneers.” Despite its period setting, the drama uses modern music by such artists as Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Brandi Carlile. Hendricks’ father likely would approve of her participation in “The Buccaneers,” since he came from England – giving her both American and British citizenship. However, her roles have had a distinctly U.S. flavor, dating back to her early participation in a production of “Grease” in Twin Falls, Idaho (where she grew up). She continued stage work when her family moved to Fairfax, Va., where being in her high school’s drama department gave her comfort and a sense of belonging. After modeling in New York and overseas, Hendricks moved to Los Angeles and started auditioning for acting jobs. She landed many guest shots and a couple of brief series runs before the arrival of her watershed role, Joan Holloway in “Mad Men.” Hendricks earned much critical acclaim and several awards for playing an advertising agency’s office

manager in the 1960s and early 1970s; her personal and professional growth mirrored that of many women of the era. Harrison Ford makes another run with “The Fugitive” If “The Fugitive” isn’t the best movie based on a television series, it sure is close. Not only does director Andrew Davis’ 1993 version of the drama — which AMC shows Tuesday, Nov. 14, Wednesday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 18 (just ahead of the film’s 4K Ultra HD debut on Nov. 21) — hold true to the basics of the original show, it expands on them sensationally, adding significant depth to wrongly accused Dr. Richard Kimble’s (Harrison Ford) perilous pursuit of the one-armed Harrison Ford in “The Fugitive” man (Andreas Katsulas) who killed his wife (Sela Ward). David Janssen’s demeanor was halting and brooding as TV’s Kimble in the 1960s, and possibly in tribute to that, so is Ford’s variation on the character ... but the longtime movie superstar has those qualities anyway, and they serve him well as Kimble remains determined to clear himself while desperately trying to evade the federal marshals led by Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones, who rightfully won an Oscar for his quirky combination of dry humor and law-and-order sturdiness). Chicago makes a fabulous principal setting for the high-stakes cat-and-mouse game, with a sequence set in and around the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (complete with green-tinted river) particularly effective. That certainly isn’t the only impactful action scene offered by “The Fugitive,” though, indicated early on as the prison transport bus carrying Kimble crashes and tumbles onto a train track. And, of course, a train is coming. Two of the unsung heroes (actually, heroines) of “The Fugitive” are veteran casting directors Amanda Mackey and Cathy Sandrich Gelfond. Whatever its size, every role is cast perfectly, with several performers leaving especially big impressions after really only a moment or two — including Julianne Moore, Nick Searcy and an early-in-her-career Jane Lynch. Jeroen Krabbe and Joe Pantoliano also are on the flawless team of actors here. FRIDAYTHURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1016, 2023

Matt LeBlanc OF FRIENDS ON TBS Q: I know Matt LeBlanc had a couple of series after “Friends.” What has he been doing lately? A: Not a lot professionally since his CBS sitcom “Man With a Plan” ended in 2020. He famously appeared with his former fellow stars in the 2021 streaming special “Friends: The Reunion,” which still can be found on Max, and it’s quite touching to watch the embraces and memories shared by him and the other five actors with whom he shared so much time – and success – over the decade-long run of that much-repeated show (which was seen originally on NBC). LeBlanc also was part of a 2021 “Top Gear” special that paid tribute to the late race driver Sabine Schmitz, who appeared often on that BBC series. LeBlanc’s presence on that special acknowledged his own presence on “Top Gear” as a presenter on episodes that were spread over four seasons, after his participation as a guest. He was required to be in England to make the show, and he ultimately decided to leave that job and remain largely in the U.S. It’s not new for LeBlanc to take extended breaks from television work. He also did that after the NBC run of the “Friends” spinoff “Joey,” and what was planned as one year off became five, with the actor eventually returning (and playing a variation of himself) in the Showtime comedy series “Episodes.” He won a Golden Globe Award for that show, then he spent four seasons on “Man With a Plan.”

The architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington, Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo) was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He fought for what he believed in and he did not back down. This biographical drama shines a long overdue spotlight on the extraordinary man who, alongside giants like the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. (Aml Ameen), Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (Jeffrey Wright), and Ella Baker (Audra McDonald), dared to imagine a different world, and inspired a movement in a march toward freedom.
“Bass Reeves was an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life at an extraordinary time in America’s history. ... He was enslaved, he went on to fight in the Civil War, he escaped enslavement during that time, lived with Native Americans for a number of years where he learned a bunch of skills that became applicable when he went on to be a deputy marshal, and had a career that spanned nearly 40 years in law enforcement. ... When you contextualize that life with these seminal moments in American history of slavery, Reconstruction, going into Jim Crow, and to have that level of success and notoriety as a lawman is just extraordinary.” - Star and co-producer David Oyelowo speaks with Entertainment Weekly on playing the titular character in “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.”

Season 2 of this animated family series continues. Things are moving along for Molly (Ashley Burch) after Season 1’s dramatic finale, and Scratch (Dana Snyder) is back home in Brighton after facing trial in the Ghost World for making human life too joyful. Everything seems to be back to (para)normal, until a family of ghost hunters – the Chens – move in next door. No matter how dreamy their son is, Molly knows she must keep her biggest secret — her best friend, Scratch — safe. And this season, she has to deal with something scarier than ghosts and ghouls: teenagehood.

“Alien” remains a top scare show
BY JAY BOBBIN
Sigourney Weaver in “Alien”
“In space, no one can hear you scream.” That was the memorable ad line for “Alien,” director Ridley Scott’s 1979 thriller that launched a franchise largely built around Sigourney Weaver’s astronaut character Ripley – the role that made her a star. FX shows the film Saturday, Nov. 17, and even with editing done for basic cable, it remains one of the most tense and troubling sci-fi movies made to date. Its realistic, understated approach in the early going has the effect of softening up the audience for what’s to come. Ripley is one member of a deep-space crew that investigates a distress signal and picks up a highly unwelcome visitor … the title creature, which grows into something larger and increasingly lethal as it runs amok within the vessel named Nostromo after making quite an explosive entrance. (Anyone familiar with one co-star’s big exit scene will know what we’re talking about.) Tom Skerritt, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton and Veronica Cartwright comprise the rest of the cast.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Stephen Ames looks to add more hardware at Charles Schwab Cup The final stage of the PGA Tour Champions tour gets underway as the 34th annual Charles Schwab Cup Championship tees off Nov. 9-12 at the Phoenix Country Golf Club, with ESPN and CBS providing all tournament coverage. In what’s been a year full of storylines and record-breaking performances for 59-year-old Stephen Ames, it’s been a season like no other — an excellent way to enter this week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Now a six-time winner on the senior circuit, Ames, who is a citizen of both Canada and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, has won four of his past 13 starts, including shooting 9-under 63 at this year’s Boeing Classic, for a record-dominating seven-stroke victory over defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez. Ames managed to also tie the Boeing Classic record for the lowest score by a winner at 197. Clearly in the zone, Ames is well aware of his strong play throughout, but with all the noise, the Canadian keeps his focus on simply enjoying the game he loves. “For me, right now I’m just enjoying where I’m at with my games and trying to make the most of it as we go along,” Ames said, speaking to reporters at the Shaw Charity Classic. “The confidence is there, there’s no doubt about it. Knowing where I’m at and how to fix things instantly when I’m not on the course, how I’m feeling a little bit more relaxed and enjoying it ... yeah I’m in that zone right now, and it’s helpful,” said Ames. While his performances since the Boeing Classic have slightly dipped over recent weeks, it would be naive to count out Ames in any way. Look for Stephen Ames to sprinkle some of his PGA Tour magic as he looks for his seventh career PGA Tour Champions victory and fifth tournament win of the season. Here/from 2 “Our hope is that everyone in the audience that sees the film sees themselves in someone,” Jaconsend said. “... It’s important for us to see people like us accomplishing things because that just lights a fire in your soul knowing that it’s possible.” In a traditionally male-dominated sport and ski film industry, Jacobsend and her fellow filmmakers want to show that a different model is possible. Instead of unpaid “exposure” in the film, each athlete was paid a day rate. “We’re paying every single woman involved in the project,” Jaconsend said. Jacobsend, who grew up around Salt Lake City, Utah, and went to high school in Sun Valley, Idaho, loves nothing more than skiing, connecting with nature, the mountains and other women. “As we empower this next generation, they’re going to come into their careers in the ski industry that much stronger, that much more confident and that much more empowered to continue this work,” Jacobsend said. And crowds seem to be responding. When Ruckus spoke with Jaconsend, “Advice for Girls” had sold out 12 straight shows, some with more than 600 people in the audience. There is something empowering about the delight on the athletes’ faces as they take to the mountain together in “Advice for Girls.” It seems so simple, yet is
