BETHANY JOY LENZ 4

If certain performers didn’t have a new Christmas movie on cable annually, one might question whether it’s really the holiday season — and Bethany Joy Lenz is one of them. The “One Tree Hill” and “Pearson” alum has been seen in yuletide attractions for a good number of years, proven by how often those repeat at this time of year. Her newest one, “A Biltmore Christmas,” making its debut Sunday, Nov. 26, on Hallmark Channel, casts the actress as a screenwriter hired to do a remake of a classic film called “His Merry Wife!” She goes to the site where the original version was made, the legendary Biltmore Estate, for research. Soon, she finds herself transported by a magical hourglass to the 1947 set of the original picture. Another Hallmark regular, Kristoffer Polaha (“Mystery 101”), is Lenz’s leading man in the story. They’re joined by two veterans of the Star Trek franchise, Jonathan Frakes (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and Robert Picardo (“Star Trek: Voyager”). The movie was made largely on location at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and production began last January to take advantage of remaining holiday decorations from last year. (By starting then, it was also completed prior to the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.) With her knack for conveying whimsy and irony simultaneously, Lenz has had many opportunities to show off her Christmas cred, supplying both pathos and humor in seasonal attractions for both Lifetime and Hallmark Channel. Frequently repeated highlights have included “Snowed-Inn Christmas” (2017) and “Poinsettias for Christmas” (2018). Particularly in recent years, Lenz has displayed versatility beyond acting — co-hosting the popular podcast “Drama Queens” with fellow

Just as they’re starting to come to terms with this new change, a famed travel writer unexpectedly shows up incognito. To make the struggling inn look more successful, the Ralstons pretend to be guests and must maintain the charade for the duration of the visit. But when Lucy falls for Jake (Victor Webster), another guest at the B&B, she feels terrible deceiving him. But, as it turns out, Jake has a secret of his own.

“One Tree Hill” graduates Hilarie Burton Morgan and Sophia Bush, launching the newspaper Modern Vintage, and advancing her music career with the album “Strawberries.” The holidays clearly remain firmly in her heart, though, and her celebration of “A Biltmore Christmas” provides fresh evidence. Birthdate: April 2, 1981 Birthplace: Hollywood, Fla. Current residence: Nashville, Tenn. Marital status: Single; has a daughter. Eddie Murphy makes the case for “Beverly Hills Cop” An immediate breakout talent on “Saturday Night Live,” Eddie Murphy teamed with Nick Nolte and Dan Aykroyd for early movie successes, but “Beverly Hills Cop” rested squarely on his shoulders. The 1984 action-comedy — which Showtime presents along with the two sequels on Tuesday, Nov. 28 — was an enormous hit that left no doubt Murphy had arrived on the big screen. Envisioned earlier as a project for such performers as Mickey Rourke and Sylvester Stallone, the final version wisely left plenty of room for Murphy’s brand of improvisational humor. And even if it wasn’t really improvised, it sure felt that way, playing right into the Murphy style. The actor-comedian plays fast-talking Detroit Eddie Murphy in police detective Axel Foley, who takes a vacation” in “Beverly Hills Cop” California to get to the bottom of a longtime friend’s murder. He’s very clearly a fish out of water on the West Coast, and his manner of playing by his own rules greatly worries the Beverly Hills lieutenant (Ronny Cox) and police partners (Judge Reinhold, John Ashton) who end up keeping an eye on Foley as he continually rocks the figurative boat. Fortunately, the visitor has another friend (Lisa Eilbacher) who has moved west, but her employer is a gallery owner (Steven Berkoff) who may have something to do with the death in question. Jonathan Banks, known later for “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” makes his presence known with few words as the possible villain’s henchman. In fact, though it’s a star vehicle for Murphy, “Beverly Hills Cop” is very generous in giving supporting players their moments under the direction of Martin Brest (“Midnight Run,” “Scent of a Woman”). Another great example of that is Bronson Pinchot, priceless in his moments as forked-tongue gallery worker Serge, who alternately confounds and amuses Foley. FRIDAYTHURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2430, 2023

Morgan Kohan OF SULLIVAN’S CROSSING ON CW/CTV Q: I know I’ve seen Morgan Kohan of “Sullivan’s Crossing” in some cable movies. Where did she get her start? A: The British Columbia native started out studying dancing as her principal path in show business, but her main attention shifted to acting when she was accepted at Toronto’s Randolph Academy. She began doing guest roles on such series as “Murdoch Mysteries” and “Star Trek: Discovery,” then continued with appearances on shows including “When Calls the Heart “ and “The Bold Type.” Around the time of the later guest shots, Kohan also started getting prominent parts in cable movies on the order of “The Black Widow Killer” (2018) and “Love on Harbor Island” (2020). The fact that those have been repeated often didn’t hurt her chances to land the lead in “Sullivan’s Crossing,” Among other movies that have featured Kohan are “A Romance Wedding” (2021) and “A Whirlwind Wedding” (2021), and she also was seen on the shows “Batwoman,” “Transplant” and “When Hope Calls.” Inspired by novels by Robyn Carr, “Sullivan’s Crossing” (which already has been renewed for a second season) originated on Canada’s CTV network, and its inclusion of two veterans of The CW in its regular cast – Chad Michael Murray (“One Tree Hill”) and Scott Patterson (“Gilmore Girls”) – likely got the latter outlet interested in picking up the series for the American market, especially when production delays linked to the entertainment-industry strikes made finding product from other sources a necessity.

“This is it for me. He’s [Morgan Jones] been around long enough. For me to pick up the stick again, it would have to be an amazing storyline. It would have to be a situation where I couldn’t look back on all the episodes that I’ve done so far and go, ‘No, I did that in episode such and such in Season such and such.’ I’m not interested in repeating myself with Morgan at the moment. I think it would kind of slightly tarnish his legacy.” - In speaking with CBR in May, star Lennie James confirms that Morgan Jones’ story will end alongside the “Fear the Walking Dead” series finale in November.

“As far as Kenan [Thompson] and I, we’ve been wanting this to happen since the first one. But we’ve known about the process of this for a long time. We’re super excited now that the burgers are back and everybody knows what’s happening. ... We wanted the script to be fun for the fans of the ’90s and the kids today.” Kel Mitchell, star of “Good Burger 2,” expresses his excitement for the long-awaited sequel to HollywoodLife following announcing the film on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” back in March. 8

This 12-minute documentary film, written and directed by Oliver Murray, tells the story behind the last Beatles song “Now And Then,” with exclusive archival footage and commentary from Paul, Ringo, George, Sean Ono Lennon and Peter Jackson, on an eventful journey that took place over five decades and is the product of conversations and collaborations between the four Beatles that go on to this day. The long mythologized John Lennon demo was first worked on in February 1995 by Paul, George and Ringo as part of The Beatles Anthology project but it remained unfinished, until now.

Mr. Magoo goes full Scrooge for Christmas

BY JAY BOBBIN

Charles Dickens’ classic seasonal story has gotten many screen workouts, but one of the most unique is the animated special “Mr, Magoo’s Christmas Carol,” which Peacock is streaming during the holiday season. Originally televised in 1962, this variation of the tale casts the famously near-sighted Magoo (voiced by Jim Backus, of “Gilligan’s Island” fame) as legendary miser Ebenezer Scrooge … and to its credit, the script stays pretty faithful to the Dickens original while also allowing Scrooge to adopt Magoo’s quirks. Morey Amsterdam and Jack Cassidy also are in the voice cast. and the original songs are by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, whose Broadway credits included “Funny Girl.” Be forewarned that despite Magoo’s amusing demeanor, some of the moments here give heartstrings a forceful yank; we point specifically to Tiny Tim (voice of Joan Gardner) singing “Alone in the World,” which it might help to make an advance buyout of a whole tissue factory for.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Lamar Jackson looks for another MVP performance against Chargers It’s time for another thrilling NFL Sunday, as the Baltimore Ravens head to the City of Angels for their Week 12 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Sunday, Nov. 26, with the game broadcast live on NBC. It’s been yet another MVP season for the Lamar Jackson, as the Pompano Beach, Florida, native and the Baltimore Ravens have led the AFC North all season long — including outscoring three different teams with a winning record by a combined 103-12 while holding teams to an impressive total of 13.8 points per game (as of Nov. 5). And, if the Ravens weren’t scary enough for their opponents, 26-year-old Jackson has been world class straight out of the gates, having already thrown for over 2,000 passing yards and counting, while completing 70.5 per cent of his passes — the highest mark of his career. In his two encounters against the Chargers, Jackson holds a passer rating of 83.0 with 371 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The last time Baltimore clashed with Los Angeles, the Ravens put on a dominant performance, winning 34-6 and holding the Chargers to 208 total yards and one touchdown, never allowing quarterback Justin Herbert to find his groove, including an interception by then-Ravens safety DeShon Elliot. Overall, the Ravens are 8-6-0 against the Chargers and they’ll look to improve that record this weekend with an explosive offence that’s proven to be a handful for any opposing teams. Expression/from 2 I’m hoping that the queer audience will feel inspired to make their own art. I feel like there’s so much potential for more visibility of queer athletes. I’m hoping that people feel like they’re not alone. You can always build a community in any space that you’re in. And you can create any content that makes you feel in your body and expresses yourself in a positive way. HCN: How long did it take you to find queer community in the snowsports world? LB: I feel like I’ve got a split identity. I have my college queer friends — anarchist, punk, niche queer community — and I can express myself fully with them. And then I get transplanted into alienation — this jock, mountain town and competition culture. On the (Freeride World) Tour, it was really cool to be able to meet some women and womenadjacent queer athletes who were skiing at the highest level in the world. But it was definitely an unspoken, supersubtle queer culture on the tour. HCN: What makes it subtle? Is there pressure for queer folks in pro skiing to keep quiet? LB: I think it’s inaccessibility. Queer people tend to be more marginalized and prone to not having the financial resources to be able to pursue competition. I’d say another part is the machismomasculine culture of the

to have an openly flourishing (queer) community. And the tour is very hyper-masculine. It does not have a history of good female inclusion or accessibility. HCN: Do you think that the tide is starting to turn in the snow-sports community and these rural mountain towns? Or is it still pretty isolated in

terms of queer connection? LB: Honestly, I don’t think I’ve settled down in one place long enough to have been able to establish a good queer community. I know that there are flourishing little pockets of queer snow folk. Usually, (queer community is) in urban areas more often than in rural towns.

When you’re in a rural town, it’s four lesbians, and we all know each other. It can be super isolated. To me, skiing is super gay, skiing is super trans. I don’t know if there’s ever going to be an actual culture shift because skiing is a very white, elitist and heterocentric sport. But there are pockets that are emerging, and even if we can’t change the entire culture, we can create a culture that works for us within the sport. HCN: Do you find ways to express your queerness and identity when skiing? LB: I think that skiing was one of the earliest ways that I expressed my masculinity. You can wear unisex clothing, it’s a very gender-nihilist kind of feeling. I get mistaken for a man when I’m skiing, because I get to express myself through my clothing. I found a lot of confidence and gender expression in skiing. I didn’t know what it was at the time. I was just like, “People perceiving me as a boy means I’m better at skiing because men are better at skiing,” and then I developed, and looking back, I thought, wait a minute, that was actually a really early component of learning that I feel better when I’m perceived in a masculine way. It gives you platforms to be perceived in the way you want and just be completely in your body. I do think sport erases gender in a lot of ways, and it has helped me construct my own gender identity. and share your favorites with friends and family via email.
