‘LONG ROAD AHEAD’ RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle
Little Jane and the Pistol Whips’ album release party at the Eagles on Saturday will mark exactly a year since Ashly Holland and her band went in the studio to record the tracks that would become “Long Road Ahead.” “It’s going to be an emotional night for me,” Holland said in an interview over tea last week. Little Jane’s first CD release was also at the Eagles, and she has fond memories from her youth of burger nights and her aunts playing pool.
Then add in the time factor: It has been more than a decade since Little Jane and the Pistol Whips’ released a full studio album, and “Long Road Ahead” has been years in the making. The “Long Road Ahead” album release party is Saturday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge in downtown Bozeman. Tickets are $15 and include a CD copy of the album. Holland hasn’t decided if it will be available on streaming services. For more information, visit www. littlejaneandthepistolwhips.com.
“Long Road Ahead” is an album about home, about leaving and coming back again. Home, for Holland, who writes all the songs for Little Jane and the Pistol Whips, is Montana. She grew up between Bozeman, Missoula and Helena and love for the state is evident in the rollicking song “Montana Can’t You See.” “I can’t help but stare. I know it’s rude, but the way that you’re looking it’s all that I can do,” Holland sings, channeling countless country
love songs as she goes on to list her sweetheart’s attributes, “the biggest mountains” and “the bluest skies.” When she writes, Holland usually sits down with her guitar, simultaneously working out the music and lyrics. “When it’s done, it’s done,” she said. She doesn’t revisit songs, doesn’t change lyrics or add to them, she remembers telling Eric Funk in an interview for “11th and Grant.” More ROAD I 14

JOSH DUHAMEL
“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” - Season 24 (Sept. 22)
This “Law & Order” spinoff follows the specially trained detectives that are part of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit as they investigate crimes of crimes of sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence. The series stars Mariska Hargitay, Dann Florek, Ice-T, Kelli Giddish and Peter Scanavino.
A movie that Josh Duhamel directed, co-wrote and starred in has given him a path into the reality-competition market. The “Las Vegas” alum and “All My Children” Daytime Emmy winner first made “Buddy Games” as a 2019 comedy about pals who take part in a series of contests to strengthen their friendship and possibly win a sizable cash prize. Some of the film’s content – which Duhamel based on experiences from his youth with his own friends – was reasonably racy, and it’s been toned down a bit for the CBS reality version of “Buddy Games” now airing Thursdays. As executive producer Duhamel serves as host, six teams of four acquaintances vie for the win in a summer-camplike setting, putting their physical and mental abilities to the test. Just as the “Buddy Games” movie (which recently got a sequel) enabled Duhamel to break into directing, the series variation is giving him an opportunity to enter the unscripted-show category at a time when the actors’ strike has kept him from doing his usual sort of work. After being an extra in Donna Summer and Christina Aguilera music videos, he became a weekday star as Leo du Pres on the now-finished “All My Children,” in a run that lasted from 1999 to 2002 (with him returning in 2011). After he left the serial, it didn’t take long for him to land a primetime role with his “Las Vegas” gig as Danny McCoy; he built upon that by making such movies as “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!,” “Turistas” and the first live-action “Transformers” adventure during the show’s run. The “Transformers” franchise has proven to be something of a constant in Duhamel’s’ career, since he has reprised his William Lennox military character in the sequels “Revenge of the Fallen,” “Dark of the Moon” and “The Last Knight” (with Lennox getting a job promotion each time).
For documentary-maker and dating-app addict Zoe Stevenson (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr. Wrongs. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbor, Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.
Duhamel has stayed active (in non-strike times) in both films and TV since – he appeared last year in Season 2 of Disney+’s “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” and in NBC’s “The Thing About Pam” – but the new incarnation of “Buddy Games” is letting him start an added chapter, and it will be interesting to see whether it endures. Birthdate: Nov. 14, 1972 Birthplace: Minot, N.D. Current residence: Los Angeles Marital status: Divorced from Black Eyed Peas singer Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson – they have a son together – and now married to a former Miss World America, Audra Mari Other television work includes: “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” “The Thing About Pam,” “Love, Victor,” “Jupiter’s Legacy,” “Veronica Mars,” “Unsolved,” “LA to Vegas,” “11.22.63,” “Battle Creek,” “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” (voice only), “Bomb Patrol Afghanistan” (narrator), “Fanboy & Chum Chum” (voice only), “Las Vegas,” “Crossing Jordan,” “Ed,” “All My Children” Movie credits include: “Buddy Games: Spring Awakening,” “Shotgun Wedding,” “Bandit,” “Think Like a Dog,” “Buddy Games,” “Love, Simon,” “CHiPs,” “Transformers,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” “Transformers: The Last Knight,” “The Show,” “Spaceman,” “Misconduct,” “You’re Not You,” “Safe Haven,” “Movie 43,” “Fire With Fire,” “New Year’s Eve,” “Life as We Know It,” “Ramona and Beezus,” “When in Rome,” “The Romantics,” “Turistas,” “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!,” “The Picture of Dorian Gray”

John Travolta still has “Saturday Night Fever”
John Travolta had done some movies before it, but “Saturday Night Fever” announced loudly that he truly had arrived. At the time he made the iconic 1977 drama – which MGM+ shows Tuesday, Sept. 19 – the actor already was a television star, thanks to his Vinnie Barbarino role on the sitcom “Welcome Back, Kotter.” As popular as he was on that show, he redefined himself with a surplus oi charisma as “Fever’s” Tony Manero, a Karen Lynn Gorney paint-store employee and half-hearted gang member who lives for the nights he spends as the king of the dance floor at a disco and John Travolta in Brooklyn, N.Y. Tony sees an opportunity to do more with his moves when the disco stages a contest. Fervent admirer Annette (Donna Pescow) is desperate to be his partner, but he has his eyes and mind set on Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), whom he spots displaying her talent on the floor one night. He proposes that they team up, but the personal differences between them quickly become apparent, with Stephanie eager to be a social climber (boasting about meeting the likes of Laurence Olivier through her job) while Tony is relatively content with his station in life. Through a series of advancements and setbacks, their relationship does develop, but it’s to the credit of director John Badham and his team that it’s never the sole focus of “Saturday Night Fever.” Tony’s work and family lives also get substantial attention, as does his connection to his pals, some of whom play rougher and more careless. And atmosphere is everything in the picture, right from the opening credits that show Travolta doing Tony’s famous strut through the streets as he downs pizza and attempts a pickup or two. That sequence is backed very notably by “Staying Alive,” one of the Bee Gees tunes furnished for the film – and those contributions resulted in one of the best-selling movie soundtracks of all time, with Yvonne Elliman (“If I Can’t Have You”) and Tavares (“More Than a Woman”) also scoring hits from it. “Staying Alive” also gave “Saturday Night Fever’s” 1983 sequel its title, but of the two stories, the first definitely is the one to catch (though the second does have its devotees, too).

Anne Hathaway OF GET REAL (1999-2000 SERIES) ON FOX
Q: Didn’t Anne Hathaway have a weekly series role some time ago? A: She did. The Oscar winner (for “Les Miserables”) got her big break in “Get Real,” a Fox series that aired during the 1999-2000 season. The seriocomic show about a dysfunctional family also was the first major credit for Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”), who played Hathaway’s younger brother; Eric Christian Olsen, later of “NCIS: Los Angeles,” also portrayed one of the show’s three siblings.
Though the series lasted only that one season, it didn’t take long for Hathaway’s movie career to get going. “The Princess Diaries” was a big hit in 2001, and though its filming meant Hathaway had to miss her first semester of college, she said later that she didn’t mind. Director Garry Marshall had thought of Liv Tyler for the part, but his granddaughters weighed in and convinced him to opt for Hathaway instead, and the picture earned her an MTV Movie Award. Returns were mixed on her movies that followed immediately, including “Nicholas Nickleby” and “Ella Enchanted,” but she sampled another medium by putting her singing talents to work in a 2002 New York staging of “Carnival.” She eventually got back on the box-office track with the 2004 sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” and moved from that into a variety of screen projects encompassing “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Spooky sweets: ‘Halloween Wars’ returns for ‘unlucky’ Season 13
A fan-favorite for foodies and Halloween lovers alike, this seasonal series has revived itself once again, ushering in autumn alongside a familiar face as Jonathan Bennett (“Mean Girls,” 2004) returns to host the latest (and spookiest) season of “Halloween Wars,” premiering Sunday, Sept. 17, on Food Network. After leaving the series during Season 11 to focus back in on his acting career, Bennett now returns to the “Halloween Wars” kitchen, replacing interim host Zak Bagans (“Ghost Adventures”), who appeared as a ghostly, virtual host for the past two years. “It’s so exciting!” Bennett shared in a recent interview. “I was off the show for a few years and this is my triumphant return. I’m coming back for season 13. That is even more exciting because it plays right into the spookiness of all of it.” Returning alongside Bennett are some of the series’ fan-favorite, classic components, including pumpkin carving, cake decorating and sugar blowing — but be prepared for shocks galore, as this unlucky season promises some new and exciting surprises along the way. The series’ first three episodes act as the “Halloween Wars” qualifying rounds, with Bennett asking the teams to complete a series of increasingly

difficult tasks, including the “Monster Mashup,” where each group must choose two of the scariest monsters imaginable and meld both into one ghastly creation; a round based on the 1973 classic film, “The Exorcist;” and a fairy tale-based challenge that just may lead to one team’s “happily ever after,” as this season’s judges — Aarti Sequeira (Season 6 winner of “Food Network Star”) and Shinmin Li (“Holiday Wars”) — eliminate one bunch of bakers, carvers and confectioners each round. Following episodes will be split into two challenges: the “Small Scare,” where teams have 45 minutes to complete an edible interpretation of a spooky theme, and the “Spine Chiller,” where the time limit is extended to five hours, allowing for ultimate creativity. Keeping to theme for this 13th season, this year’s teams feature some of the show’s spookiest puns yet, with names like Team Sweet Screams, Pumpkins Up the Volume, Snax Sabbath, Spice Ghouls, Pumpkin Posse, Trick or Sweet and more, with each team hopeful to prove their deliciously deadly talent in the kitchen and win the final, $50,000 grand prize. Season 13 of “Halloween Wars” begins Sunday, Sept. 17, on Food Network.

“Broadcast News” goes behind the TV scenes
BY JAY BOBBIN
It may not have the edge of other movies about the television business, but “Broadcast News” still has plenty to like. Being shown on MGM+ Hits on Friday, Sept. 22, writer-director James L. Brooks’ 1987 comedy-drama comes from a world he already knew, having co-created the TV newsroom of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” However, he fortified his effort by landing an adviser in CBS News veteran Susan Zirinsky, a veteran CBS News producer who’s now the chief of that entire division. She’s also the inspiration for one of the story’s chief characters ... Jane Craig, a driven producer in a network bureau in Washington, D.C. The role made Holly Hunter a star, and perfect opposite her is William Hurt is cast as charismatic Tom Grunick, a newly hired reporter whose admission of not fully understanding the job repulses Jane, though she also can’t deny her attraction to him. Albert Brooks completes the tale’s romantic triangle as Aaron Altman, a correspondent who’s more than capable at his job, though he lacks star quality. This is a film that remains enjoyable to watch time and again.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Tiafoe looks to defend Laver Cup title The annual Laver Cup returns for its sixth year as the world’s top players go head-to-head in singles and doubles matches, as the tournament is played in Canada for the very first time. Taking place at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C., the action airs live on the Tennis Channel, Sept. 22-24. With the final teams determined back in August, Team World captain John McEnroe announced the return of world No. 10-ranked — and fan favorite player — Francis Tiafoe as part of the six-man team set to hit the courts this weekend, making it his third Laver Cup appearance. After an emotional victory last year that saw Team World take its first Laver Cup, Tiafoe and his teammates will look to defend that title once more. Last year at the famous O2 Arena, Tiafoe came up huge for Team World, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in a must-win match 1-6, 7-6 (11), 10-8, saving four points and breaking the team’s winless curse, giving it a 13-8 victory. This also marked the retirement of 20-time singles major champion and former singles No. 1 Roger Federer as he and longtime rival Rafael Nadal fell in doubles to Team World’s Jack Sock and Francis Tiafoe, 4-6, 7-6 (2), (11-9). Excited to get a crack at his third Laver Cup, Tiafoe looks to bring that same energy and focus this weekend, hoping for a repeat. “There’s no doubt that last year’s Laver Cup win was right up there as a career high for me,” Tiafoe told reporters. “It was an unbelievable feeling to finally lift that trophy after coming so close in the past, and I can’t wait for another shot this year.” With high expectations looming this year, look for Team World to set the tone early, hoping to become back-to-back champions for the first time in team history. Don’t miss any of the action as Team Word defends its title against Team Europe from Sept. 22-24, airing live on Full name: Francis the Tennis Channel from Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C. Road/from 2 So by the start of 2020, Holland was armed with all the songs that would become “Long Road Ahead,” believing them to be finished. Then came the pandemic. Instead of going into the studio, Holland found herself digging back into the songs in the long days of reclusiveness. She added a pre-chorus here, a bridge there. Anticipation for the album release is heightened by Holland’s stake in the whole thing. She gave herself creative control, acting as executive producer alongside Luke Scheeler. “I paid for it myself,” she said. “I didn’t have to follow anybody’s rules.” While her country roots are evident throughout, “Long Road Ahead” incorporates Holland’s actual listening tastes. She talks about Neko Case and Radiohead, about revisiting Pink Floyd’s catalog, about Long Beach hip hop (though that would be quite a leap for Little Jane). While she talked about a friend prodding her to take the album even further, adding an EDM remix or the like, Holland is happy where it ended up. “This is a stretch for me,” she said. “It feels just right, just enough of a difference.” Holland brought in Darryl Neudorf, who often works with Neko Case, to produce “Quietly it Waits,” “Untied” and “Lost to the Trade.” With his input, “Long Road Ahead” went from “a straight, one-toned country album” to having an edge, Holland said. “Bumb-a-lee-bee,” a track produced by Tom Murphy and
