RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle
As they have many times before, Bozeman’s musicians gathered at the Haufbrau on Saturday to mourn one of their own. More and more people trickled in as they heard the news that local keytar hero Joe Kirchner, 43, died on Friday, when he collided with another motorcyclist at the corner of Gooch Hill Road and U.S. Highway 191. Both drivers died at the scene, according to the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office. Joe’s wife, Bridget Wermers Kirchner, was a passenger, and remains at Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center as of Wednesday. The pair were married in June.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, a planned Filling Station show with Grateful Dead tribute act 710 Ashbury has been turned into a fundraiser for Bridget, according to promoter Brian Ripple of Ripple Sound. Tickets are $15 at https://events.sellout.io/Another-Evening-with-710ASHBURY. Music starts inside at 8 p.m. A block party has also been forming around the show, with music, food trucks and vendors. All proceeds will go to a Go Fund Me that is in the works.
Joe is perhaps most recognizable from his years playing with local Pink Floyd tribute band Pinky and the Floyd, sweating through his now-signature pink beehive wig while giving his all to the performance on keytar, keyboard and synthesizer.
“We lost our icon,” the band posted on social media this week, with a broken heart emoji. “The very definition of our band. We are completely devastated.”
Pinky, as the band is known to fans, canceled its show in Billings this weekend. According to founding member Dustin Tucker, the band is taking time to process the loss and contemplate a way forward. Though, as of Saturday, he was having a hard time seeing one.

‘Feel Pretty’
The movie work Amy Schumer has done to date has suited her well, which is no easy feat, since the singular comedy brand she has established has generated certain expectations of her.
“I Feel Pretty” stays true to that, giving her a terrific conceit to work with. Currently streaming on Hulu, the 2018 film casts her as a cosmetics-company worker who’s aware she doesn’t match the physical perfection that her firm promotes ... but what if she thought that she did? That happens when an
accident in a spin class leaves her envisioning herself as the hottest of the hot, though everyone around her sees her in the same way they always have physically.
That set-up lets Schumer plug into the in-your-face humor she’s known for, and as she approaches others with the supreme self-confidence of a supermodel, it’s fun to watch. It definitely helps if you already are a Schumer fan, but regardless, she stays true to her image. And especially when it comes to any comedy star, you can’t blame a performer for
sticking with what they know works for them.
Of course, Schumer’s character eventually will have her moment of reckoning. Among the co-stars helping her get there are Lauren Hutton as the cosmetics firm’s founder, Michelle Williams — who’s wonderfully funny in her own right here — as Hutton’s granddaughter and employee, and “Saturday Night Live” alum Aidy Bryant.
In terms of Schumer’s career overall, “I Feel Pretty” arrived at an interesting time.
“Trainwreck” (2015) was an out-of-the-park hit for her, in no small part because she also wrote it, while “Snatched” (2017) had only moderate success as she entrusted others to know what to do with her now-famous persona.
Though she was only an actress-for-hire again with “I Feel Pretty,” it treats her better, in the sense that it really knows what to do with her. Its issue of body-shaming is something she has dealt with in her own material, so the match of star and story is a logical and pretty (so to speak) effective one.
“House of Spoils” (Oct. 3)
This horror film follows an ambitious chef (Ariana DeBose) who opens her first restaurant — a farm-to-table affair on a remote estate — where she battles kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, crushing self doubts… and the powerful spirit of the estate’s previous owner who threatens to sabotage her at every turn.
“Killer Cakes” - Season 1 (Prime Video — Oct. 8, Season Premiere)
From horror visionaries Blumhouse Television and Cake Boss creators High Noon Entertainment, this new series is a one-of-a-kind competition show where bakers with terrifying skills attempt to win some of the most frightening challenges ever produced for television. Contestants will work with the best horror special effects artists in Hollywood to unleash their twisted imaginations and create cakes so disgusting, so disturbing, and so realistic, it’s the stuff of nightmares. Matthew Lillard hosts, working alongside expert judges Danielle Harris and Nikk Alcaraz.
“The Legend of Vox Machina”Season 3 (Oct. 3)
Everything is at stake in this series’ long-awaited third season, as the Chroma Conclave’s path of destruction spreads like wildfire while the Cinder King hunts down Vox Machina. Our lovable band of misfits must rise above inner (and outer) demons to try and save their loved ones, Tal’Dorei, and all of Exandria.
“El Diario” (Oct. 4)
After her divorce, Olga (Irene Azuela) moves with her daughter Vera (Isabella Arroyo) to a new city. When Olga finds the diary of a killer in the attic of her house, she soon discovers that, far from being finished, the diary continues to be rewritten, endangering her life and everyone around her. Overwhelmed by this inexplicable event, Olga finds no one else to rely on except her daughter’s therapist, Carlos (Mauricio Ochmann), as she tries to find out the identity of the murderous writer.
“Killer Heat” (Available Now) In classic noir style, this thrilling, contemporary mystery follows private eye Nick Bali (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), an American living in Greece, who is hired to investigate the supposed accidental death of young shipping magnate Leo Vardakis (Richard Madden), whose sister-in-law (Shailene Woodley) doesn’t believe the official police report. Nick finds darkness at every turn, as the rich and powerful Vardakis family rule like gods, jealousies run deep and anyone could be a suspect.

“This show is based on the only good decision I ever made: falling for a nice Jewish boy. But I realized that being happy is way harder than being miserable. ... So, I created this show based on all the ways that finding the right person can be so hard. “Nobody Wants This,” but we do, and that’s all that matters.” - Erin Foster, creator of “Nobody Wants This”
“The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist” (Oct. 3)

“I’ve been on a few shows before. I’ve only played myself in those shows, though. It’s definitely different portraying a character and trying to find the emotions in everything, and the understanding of a script and the scene. But it’s a challenge. ... I feel like an amateur right now, but I’m coachable. That’s one thing I know from being in sports, I am a coachable guy.”Travis Kelce , Kansas City Chiefs tight end and star of “Grotesquerie”
“It’s What’s Inside” (Oct. 4)

“This really is a pinnacle for me. And to have this at the end of my career is an incredible gift. I never dreamed I would have a third act like this. I’ve never thought at my age I’d be playing such a wonderful role and for network, which so many people are going to see. And to play such a complex character, a woman who seems forgotten and invisible but isn’t, and uses what’s considered a liability [her age] to her advantage and to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes.” - Star of “Matlock,” Kathy Bates

Alison Sweeney of “A Sprinkle of Deceit: A Hannah Swensen Mystery” on Hallmark Mystery: She had a continuous run as Sami Brady on the daytime serial “Days of Our Lives” for almost 12 years (1993-2014), and she has returned to that show for several stints since.
Zachary Quinto of “Brilliant Minds” on NBC and Peacock:
To be cast as the younger Spock in the movie reboot of “Star Trek,” he needed to have the approval of Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock – and getting that also led Quinto into two sequels.
Joshua Jackson of “Doctor Odyssey” on ABC and Hulu:
In his previous series, the Paramount+ version of “Fatal Attraction,” he played a version of Michael Douglas’s movie role as a married lawyer who paid a big price for what he thought was a onenight stand.

Answers:
Q: It’s interesting to see Don Johnson coming back to series TV in “Doctor Odyssey.” What was the last series he had?
A: Bankable on the home screen ever since his trendsetting 1980s role as Detective James “Sonny” Crockett in NBC’s “Miami Vice,” Don Johnson has had several shows since … the most recent one before his new ABC and Hulu program, “Doctor Odyssey,” been in the NBC sitcom “Kenan,” where he played a recurring role as Rick, the former father-in-law of the show’s titular star (Kenan Thompson).
To go back to his earlier shows, Johnson had the lead in a syndicated 1979 miniseries version of the John Jakes historical novel “The Rebels,” then he co-starred in NBC’s 1980 series adaptation of “From Here to Eternity” based on the James Jones book that also inspired an Oscar-winning 1953 movie. After that, Johnson returned to NBC in “Miami Vice,” which changed the course of his career with the enormous success it had over its 1984-89 tenure.
In the immediate aftermath of that trendy police drama, Johnson focused on feature-film work, but he was back on television in the title role of “Nash Bridges” on CBS from 1996 to 2001, where he played the title part of a San Francisco police detective (and he reprised the role in a 2021 movie for USA Network). In The WB’s “Just Legal” – the last show that network aired before it morphed into The CW – Johnson portrayed a veteran, struggling lawyer. He returned in 2010 and 2012 in the middle two of the four seasons of HBO’s sports comedy “Eastbound & Down.”
Johnson had the role of a Texas Ranger in “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” on El Rey Network in 2014-15, then he appeared as an oil-rich tycoon in ABC’s short-lived “Blood & Oil” in 2015. The latter show also featured Miranda Rae Mayo, who has had a much longer run as Firefighter Stella Kidd on NBC’s “Chicago Fire.” Later, in 2019, he took on the role of Judd Crawford in the HBO miniseries “Watchmen.”

Q: Is Sam Elliott still working? Why haven’t I seen him in a while?
A: If the tall, wiry, cowboy archetype Sam Elliott (“The Ranch”) had an ordinary, pensioned career, he would have retired more than a decade ago. But nothing about Elliott’s career has been ordinary — even for Hollywood.
He recently turned 80, and he’s been working pretty steadily since the late ‘60s and his first credited film role, in the classic Western “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969).
You’re right that his pace has slowed a little in recent years, but that just means he can be a little choosier in the roles he takes. It also means stretching his wings a little from time to time. For example, his next role won’t be a western at all, but a big-budget fantasy story.
He’ll be voicing the dragon in “Grendel,” the (mostly) live-action retelling of the ancient “Beowulf” legend.
It just recently went into production, though, so don’t expect to see it in theaters any time soon.
You’re right that, besides that, he’s been keeping a pretty low profile lately. His last role was a lead in the 2021 miniseries “1883,” a prequel to the smash hit “Yellowstone.”
That might not seem that long ago, but for Elliott it’s an age — he’s kept up an incredibly busy schedule since his career took off in the late 1980s (another reason he’s atypical in Hollywood — he didn’t even really get famous until he was well into his 40s).

For both the month of Halloween and a salute to screen legend Bela Lugosi, “Dracula” is a hugely appropriate film to start with. The 1931 horror staple leads a “Star of the Month” tribute to the actor when Turner Classic Movies shows it Wednesday, Oct. 2 — and it might be the early peak of the festival for many viewers, though lots of other Lugosi terror tales will be featured throughout the month, with “Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1932) and “The Wolf Man” (1941) being two more of the opening-night titles.
Of course, Lugosi plays the Bram Stoker-created Transylvanian count with a taste for the blood of others; the actor came to the screen incarnation with some expertise, since he also had portrayed Dracula on Broadway. He would reprise the part 17 years later in 1948’s “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” (which TCM has on Oct. 9), but for his definitive performance in the role, the first movie clearly is the top choice. Edward Van Sloan appears as the vampire’s nemesis, Professor Van Helsing, and Helen Chandler plays Dracula target Mina Seward.
“Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Sept. 29): This spinoff of “The Andy Griffith Show” became a major hit for CBS and title star Jim Nabors, whose likably naive title character entered the United States Marine Corps and found endless ways to confound his commanding officer, no-nonsense Sgt. Carter (Frank Sutton). A weekend “Binge” marathon of the show continues here; the cast regulars also include Ronnie Schell and Allan Melvin.
“Frozen” (Freeform, Sunday, Sept. 29): This animated, Oscar-winning 2013 Disney feature had enormous success not only at the box office, but also as a social phenomenon – particularly since its song “Let It Go” was heard just about everywhere for a while. Kristen Bell supplies the voice of Anna, a princess who is estranged from her magically gifted sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel) in their youth, but they reunite in young adulthood to try to save their iced-over homeland. Josh Gad voices the popular snowman character Olaf; the 2019 sequel “Frozen II” follows immediately.
“CHiPs” (Heroes & Icons, Monday, Sept. 30): While this series observed many of the usual tropes of police shows, it also had a taste for kitsch … accounting for the first-season episode “Green Thumb Burglar,” in which motorcycle-riding California officers Ponch and Jon (Erik Estrada, Larry Wilcox) encounter none other than H.R. Pufnstuf, the distinctive children’s-show character created by Sid and Marty Krofft. That rather unexpected meeting happens while the cops are chasing whoever is doing serial damage to Los Angeles shrubbery.
Q: Does Dermot Mulroney consider himself part of the Brat Pack? Why didn’t he catch on like those other guys?
A: Dermot Mulroney (“August: Osage County,” 2013) has said that he does indeed consider himself part of the Brat Pack, and his resume bears that out. But as for him not “catching on,” arguably he’s a bigger star today than many of his former packmates. In a 2020 interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, he’s frank in assessing his career arc. “I never did reach that apex of my class, the No. 1 guy. Therefore, I’m much more usable now. And there are fewer of us. Sometimes, it is a matter of outlasting.” He says that he was essentially recruited by his agent and the larger Hollywood machine to feed the industry’s hunger for young stars after the success of “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “The Breakfast Club” (both released in 1985).
So, just out of university, he suddenly found himself with leading roles in films such as 1988’s “Young Guns” (a peak-Brat Pack
BY ADAM THOMLISON
title) and 1991’s “Career Opportunities” (written by John Hughes, the man behind “The Breakfast Club” and a number of other Pack classics).
But while many of his co-stars in those films (see, for example, his “Young Guns” colleagues Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen) burned more brightly than he did in the years that followed, they faded a little faster — succumbing, at least somewhat, to industry pitfalls such as typecasting and the occasional scandal. Mulroney, on the other hand, kept working steadily, and in more diverse roles. Indeed, for many he’s a rom-com star first and foremost, appearing in such genre classics as “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997) and “The Family Stone” (2005). He’s also simply been busier — his resume is more than 150 entries long. He suggests, in his Guardian interview, that that’s his real secret: “An actor who doesn’t say yes to everything is really making a mistake.”
The NFL season is in full swing as fans get excited for another week of football action with the Tennessee Titans gearing up to take on the Miami Dolphins at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, Monday, Sept. 3, with all the action airing live on ESPN.
Week 4 is here and the Miami Dolphins are looking to continue building off an incredible season of milestones, despite coming up short in an AFC Wild Card game for the fifth time in franchise history.
However, since the acquisition of superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill in 2022, the Miami Dolphins have been a team on the come up, reaching a record of 11-6 in 2023 with the hopes of improving that record and making a deeper playoff run.
Hill’s role will be crucial to their success this season, after an outstanding 2023 season, in which Hill racked up 1799 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, leading the entire NFL in both categories. This season, the Georgia native has yet again set the ambitious goal of reaching 2,000 receiving yards, something that has never been achieved by a wide receiver in the NFL.
Meanwhile, for visiting opponents Tennessee Titans, they enter the 2024 season with a fresh sense of optimism after a lengthy search for a head coach in the offseason, appointing Brian Callahan as the new Titans head coach. Looking to help turn the team around after going 6-11 last season will be Titans quarterback Will Levis who in the last matchup against the Dolphins fared quite well, throwing for 327 yards, 23 completions and one touchdown.

“It’s been a real struggle,” he texted on Tuesday. “Doesn’t seem real.”
Joe was classically trained on piano, yet incredibly versatile. He loved to dig into new material, and had a knack for picking it up quickly.
“Joe began studying classical piano at 7 thanks to some stern guidance from his mother, who is also responsible for gifting him the legendary pink beehive wig,” according to a bio on the Pinky website.
Local composer and music luminary Eric Funk first met Joe at a Hawthorne Elementary School Arts Fair, and said even then, Joe was clearly talented. Joe was always tied to a number of bands — some as a permanent member and others as a special guest. He was always welcome.
One such band was local exploratory bluegrass band North Fork Crossing. Joe has made multiple appearances with the band, and sat in on their album release celebration this year.
“It was extremely generous of him to share his musical talents and smile with us, and the rest of the world,” the band wrote on Facebook. “...His inclusivity within the music community was immeasurable.”
Most recently, Joe’s bands included funky progressive rock band MOTH, a band that now uses a moth logo, but at one point was an acronym for “Men of the Hauf.” A lover of jam bands, Joe also played with Grateful Dead tribute band Dead Sky, which was created by the late Joe Knapp. And most recently, he joined the house band for local puppet musical “Freak Out.” Previous groups include Knapp’s band SlomoJoe and the Knowshows, hip-hop group Black Mask and Fluorescent Brown, an improvisational down-tempo funk combo that was once the Wednesday night house band at Colonel Black’s.
Outside of music, Joe was known for his immense love for Bridget, cats, motorcycles and jet skis. He was a certified mechanic and a whiz at fixing all manner of things, mechanical and emotional.
For full disclosure here, I also considered Joe a friend, though I believe most who met him would say the same. I followed Joe, a Bozeman native through Bozeman schools. He was a senior at Bozeman High when I was a lowly freshman. But it
was only later that I would really come to know and appreciate him. Joe was a staple at Peach Street Jams, a weekly Tuesday night open jam session at Peach Street Studios, a group of now-defunct recording studios that is now Live from the Divide. It was a gathering place for misfits and musicians. A friendly poker game occasionally found a home there and garnered Joe the nickname, “The Sheriff.” I will never forget the way he would look at you over the bridge of his nose, assessing your game play before calling a bet. He kept us honest. He also gave what I may always consider the best-ever hugs.
Joe accumulated a variety of nicknames in those years. Some knew him as “The Business” (and there are stickers floating around town that identify him as such); others knew him as “Ginger Bear,” for obvious reasons — Joe was a bear of a man, and a very proud redhead, even joining an all-redhead band at one point.
Joe’s influence on Bozeman’s music scene goes beyond his own performances, entertaining and prolific though they were.
“He was always helping people find their ways into different bands and encouraging and hyping us all up,” friend Shayna Gibson wrote in a text message on Tuesday.
Friend Amber Deming, whose husband Jordan Rodenbiker was in MOTH with Joe, gravitated toward Joe in the five years she knew him, explaining that he was just the kind of person she wanted to be around.. “...whenever there was a gathering, I always chose to sit by Joe,” she wrote in a text message on Tuesday. He always made me feel welcome and like an old friend. We had the best, deepest conversations. He was a great listener and never judged.”
To use a contemporary music reference, Joe was the Post Malone of Bozeman. He seemed to sit in with every musician and band around, regardless of genre. This was a testament to his musical talent, sure, but also to the fact that people just wanted to be around him.
“He portrayed himself as kind of a bad boy on a motorcycle, but that was all a facade,” Groovin’ On festival organizer Erica Blevins wrote in a memorial post on Facebook. “You see, when you have a heart as big as Joe, it’s hard to hide. It only took a few seconds of hanging with him to see how truly beautiful of a person he was.”

The pleasant Cahill appreciates that “Autumn at Apple Hill” hits many familiar Hallmark movie notes, such as the theme of a dedicated business person getting a new chance at romance. “It was so much fun to get to play the gamut of her emotions,” the actress says. “I don’t often get to go to the place where [a character] is really annoyed with someone.”
A big appeal of “Autumn at Apple Hill” for Cahill was the chance for her to reunite with co-star Brown, with whom she also worked in the 2021 Hallmark film “Every Time a Bell Rings.” She notes, “I’ve known Wes for maybe 15 years, and it was such a joy for us to do this. We got to have some sweet moments in it, and that’s also part of the Hallmark tradition.”
Winnipeg doubles for the fictional setting of the small town Landover in “Autumn at Apple Hill,” and as someone who travels frequently for work, Cahill maintains that she’s comfortable in any accommodations: “I am someone who’s happy anywhere, in a guest room or on a couch or in a lovely hotel. Or in an inn, like the one in this movie. I have stayed in a number of inns, and being in a cosy one when the weather is crisp is just the best.”
Also known to another wide audience as Jen Scotts — the Pink Time Force Ranger — in the Power Rangers franchise, Cahill will stay in the Hallmark family as part of the large ensemble cast of the upcoming holiday season series “Holidazed” on the new Hallmark+ streaming service. “It’s everything that everyone loves about
