More tweed, less tie-dye
RACHEL HERGETT
For the Chronicle
Many people recognize comedian Shane Mauss from his appearances on Comedy Central or the network’s “Tales of the Trip” videos on YouTube where he talks about his experiences doing mind-altering drugs known as psychedelics, things like ketamine, DMT or “magic” mushrooms. Mauss doesn’t shy away from his association to these drugs. His approach, however, is measured. It usually tends toward investigation and examination rather than escapism.
“I care far more about science than I do psychedelics,” Mauss said over the phone on Monday.
Mauss will be in Bozeman on Monday, Sept. 11 for a show at the Emerson Center — one of the tour’s largest venues in one of the smallest cities. He is touring a show called “A Better Trip,” a play o of his comedy tour “A Good Trip,” where he performed in 11 cities and was followed by a lm crew for the documentary “Psychonautics: A Comic’s Exploration of Psychedelics.”
e show was originally conceived for a residency at Area 15 in Las Vegas, after Mauss was hired to play host to
a conference on psychedelics in the space and was enamored with the projection system.
“A Better Trip” isn’t the standard stand-up show. Mauss is joined on tour by VJ Michael Strauss, who live mixes visuals created by a variety of artists that could make you feel like you are in another world. And Mauss’ performance combines storytelling with stand-up comedy and scienti c lecture.
“It has turned out to be a really nice way for me to sneak science in a comedy show,” Mauss said of combining the platforms. “If you’re doing psychedelics you’re familiar
with altering perception, which means it’s kind of natural to talk about consciousness.”
People are generally surprised by his audiences, Mauss said. Rather than young hippies pulled in by the promise of psychedelic visuals, Mauss’ audience is more middle aged academic. You’re likely to see “more tweed and less tie-dye.”
Mauss, who is 43, aims his approach toward those in the range of about 15 years older or younger. He doesn’t recommend coming to the show while tripping.

“Welcome to Wrexham” -
Season 2 (Sept. 13)
This hit FX docuseries is hitting the pitch with high spirits for its second season. Following “Deadpool” (2016) star Ryan Reynolds and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney as they purchased Wrexham AFC, a historic professional football club in Wales, and work to return the struggling team to its former glory, the series zooms in on the passion of the community and the impact the club has on their lives. This season, the team continues their quest to move up through the ranks to the premier league.
Show-business strikes notwithstanding, Stephen Colbert will be presiding over “The Late Show” for some time to come.
Whether in repeats or new episodes, the CBS weeknight host (also an executive producer of the series) will be welcoming guests to the stage of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater for at least three more years, since he recently agreed to that long a contract extension. A member of the Writers Guild of America himself, Colbert has expressed his support for the striking members, and he reportedly has continued to pay his staff during the work stoppage that has caused his Peabody Award-winning, frequently Primetime Emmy-nominated program to air repeats since May.
Those episodes are of fairly recent vintage, but former “The Daily Show” regular Colbert has a sizable library to draw from, having filled the “Late Show” job since several months after David Letterman left the desk in 2015 … after Colbert ended Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” at the end of 2014. The current hiatus for new “Late Show” installments comes after the coronavirus pandemic prompted production of the program from Colbert’s home for five months in 2010, and though fresh hours had resumed, an in-studio audience (fully vaccinated against COVID-19) didn’t return until June 2021.
Since topicality has been one of the host’s strongest suits and top desires, the choice of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” encores lately has been interesting. By necessity, the opening monologues have been several months old, at least – but it’s to the credit of Colbert and his creative team that the often politically driven humor has been

original enough to remain entertaining, even if it isn’t optimally timely. The moment for that will come again, though, and Colbert undoubtedly will be more than ready for it.

OF “SPENCER SISTERS”: (COMING IN OCTOBER) ON CW
Q: I see that Lea Thompson is returning in a new series. What was the last one she did?
Meryl Streep and Anne HathawayThe hit 2006 comedy – which Freeform shows Wednesday, Sept. 13, and Thursday, Sept. 14 – is one of the most popular mentor-employee tales yet told on the screen. Adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s best seller by “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” writer-producer Aline Brosh McKenna, the film boasts two of the most memorable performances to date in the careers of Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, who get very strong backing from an expert supporting cast.
Hathaway plays Andy, an aspiring journalist who manages (despite her lack of knowledge of haute couture) to land a position as an assistant to New York-based fashion-magazine titan Miranda Priestly (Streep), who redefines “no-nonsense” as she displays zero patience with anyone she feels is wasting her time or attention. Still, she’s somewhat amused by Andy, who displays plenty of ambition while being on turf that others would be better-suited to.
Not entertained at all by the situation is high-strung Emily (Emily Blunt), Miranda’s main deputy, who is obsessed with keeping things running smoothly for the demanding boss. She can’t quite get over that Andy has been brought on board, and her determination to keep a tight rein on everything that happens in the office eventually suffers a big setback that puts Andy in even more of a position to show what she can do.
That opportunity comes to involve a trip to Paris for a prestigious fashion show, where behindthe-scenes intrigue about staffing gives Andy considerable insight to the darker side of the business she’s gotten into. Her main counsel through it is Nigel (a superb Stanley Tucci), Miranda’s right-hand man who has hopes of being recognized for his loyalty with a big promotion. Also playing a role in the proceedings is Christian (Simon Baker), another fashion-industry figure who has designs on Andy, despite her relationship with boyfriend Nate (“Entourage’s” Adrian Grenier) that starts to erode over her devotion to her job.
A: As a series regular, that would have been “Switched at Birth,” on which she played one of the mothers whose daughters were … well, check the title of the show again. She also had recurring roles on “Scorpion” (as the Katharine McPhee character’s mom) and “The Goldbergs,” and she had a guest part last year on “Star Trek: Picard.”
It’s worth noting that Thompson also was a director on the latter two programs, and she’s been spending a lot of time in that job – which she shares with her husband, Howard Deutch (“Pretty in Pink”) – in recent times. She also has guided episodes of “Will Trent” (on which Deutch is an executive producer and occasional director), “Resident Alien” and “Young Sheldon” among other shows. Earlier, Thompson directed four “Switched at Birth” stories as well as two of the “Jane Doe” mystery movies in which she starred.
Thompson’s other major series credit as a star is the 1990s sitcom “Caroline in the City,” which ran almost as long as “Switched at Birth,” ending just short of 100 episodes.
She’ll have another shot at longevity on weekly TV when she returns in “The Spencer Sisters,” a Canadian import premiering Oct. 4 on The CW. She and Stacey Farber play a mystery-writer mother and police-officer daughter (despite the “Sisters” in the title) who decide to open a private-detective agency. Thompson isn’t credited with directing any of that show yet, but that’s likely to change if it continues for additional seasons.

BY CAROLINE COLLACUTTHenson’s horrors: ‘Halloween Baking Championship’ returns for spooky season
Kids are in school, “PSLs” are back, and that can only mean one thing: “Spooky Season” is right around the corner. Pumpkin-flavored everything, apple pies galore, cinnamon practically hanging in the air — no one does Autumn like Food Network, delighting with more tricks and treats in a new season of “Halloween Baking Championship,” premiering Monday, Sept. 11.
Season 9 of the competition sees the return of John Henson (“Wipeout”) as host, alongside the allstar panel of celebrity judges who reigned supreme in Season 8: chef Carla Hall (“The Chew”) and patissiers Stephanie Boswell (“Bake Or Break”) and Zac Young (“Top Chef: Just Desserts”).
Food Network has released descriptions for the series’ first two episodes. According to the network, the season begins as “host John Henson welcomes a dozen bakers to the Henson & Sons Carnival, where they’re ready for the ride of their lives. First, they must layer a ‘tarot-misu’ depicting the carnival’s untimely demise. Then, the bakers scare up a new carnival mascot by designing creepy clown cakes.”
Those lucky enough to make it to the second episode will face a frightfully gory night, with the Food Network promising a particularly “bloody” competition. “Do-nut try to steal John Henson’s dream job,”
they say, “or things might get bloody. The remaining bakers make bloody filled doughnuts to commemorate an unfortunate accident. Then it’s a joyful bake for some and doomed one for others as the competitors take judges [Hall, Boswell and Young] round and round on the creepiest carousel ever.”
Each episode will see two rounds of spine-chilling competition. The bakers begin with the “Preliminary Heat,” where they receive a bite-sized, Halloween-themed challenge that must be completed within a tight time frame. The patissier who presents the spookiest (and most delicious) treat will gain a mystery advantage — a trick to play against their fellow bakers, perhaps — heading into the “Main Heat.”
This second round sees some intense frights and delights, as competitors are given a new theme and a longer time period to create whatever creepy-crawly confection they’d like. The bakers must present something larger than life, as the winner of the “Main Heat” immediately advances to the next round while one baker is eliminated from the game. The final three (or four) then compete in a winner-take-all finale, with one monstrous baker winning $25,000.
Sharpen your teeth and prepare to dine. Season 9 of “Halloween Baking Championship” begins Monday, Sept. 11, on Food Network.

“The French Connection” drives William Friedkin’s talent home
Of the films that the late director William Friedkin was known for, “The French Connection” particularly endures for a number of reasons … not the least of which is one of the screen’s greatest car pursuits, which Friedkin admitted he shot in a renegade style that only enhances its impact and legend. Turner Classic Movies shows the picture Thursday, Sept. 14, to lead a memorial salute to Friedkin, who died in August.
He won an Oscar for the fact-inspired 1971 police thriller (named its year’s best picture at the awards), as did Gene Hackman as “Popeye” Doyle, a tough New York detective determined to get the goods on a seemingly untouchable international drug smuggler (Fernando Rey). Roy Scheider also attained stardom as Doyle’s partner, and while there’s much else to recommend about the movie, the chase that puts a wild-driving Doyle on the trail of an overload train is a highlight that’s hard to beat. (TCM has scheduled a second Friedkin tribute night, including “The Exorcist,” for Nov. 26.)

Gene Hackman in “The French Connection”Aaron Rodgers makes Jets season debut on Monday Night Football
The NFL is back in action, as the new-look New York Jets kick off their season Monday, Sept. 11, at Metlife Stadium, facing the Buffalo Bills, last season’s AFC East winners and division foes. The game airs on ESPN and ABC, with kick-off at 8:15 p.m.
It was all New York Jets this off-season as the acquisition of likely Hall of Fame-bound quarterback, now former Green Bay Packer, Aaron Rodgers took the NFL headlines by storm. The 39-year-old enters his 19th season, joining a Jets team coming off a disappointing 2022 campaign, having missed the playoffs for a 12th straight year.
With Rodgers now manning the ship, he brings a new sense of optimism as the Jets officially enter an era of raised expectations and excitement the team hasn’t felt in years.
Speaking with reporters following the first official day of Jets training camp, Rodgers said he welcomes the added hype and pressure.
“We want everyone to jump on the wagon now,” Rodgers told reporters. “High expectations are a good thing.”
Set to face an elite Buffalo squad that has won the AFC East three years in a row, Rodgers and the Jets will have to be sharp right out of the gate. The Bills have gone 5-1 since 2020 in head-to-head clashes and are 68-57 overall (since 1960).
Last season the Jets came out victorious in Week 9 as they defeated the Bills 20-17 in the Big Apple. The Jets played an excellent defensive game sacking Bills quarterback Josh Allen eight times and forcing him to throw for two interceptions.
While still playing for Green Bay, Rodgers and the Packers were defeated in their Week 8 matchup against the Bills, but despite the loss, Rodgers put up significantly better numbers (63% completion rating, two touchdowns, and 91.4% passer rating).
Having won nine straight Monday Night Football games in his career, look for Rodgers and the Jets to keep that trend going all season long.
Catch all your prime-time Monday Night Football action live on ESPN and ABC, as the New York Jets take on the Buffalo Bills Monday, Sept. 11, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at Metlife Stadium.

“I’m not going to tell you how to live your life, but it’s not what the show was designed for…” Mauss writes in the “A Better Trip” FAQ on his website, www. shanemauss.com. “Stand-up comedy generally requires more of an attention span and this show is much smarter and more informative than typical stand-up. The show was made to integrate past experiences, learn while laughing, and inspire better future trips.”
Mauss often advocates for people exploring their mind in controlled clinical settings and drug laws that take the guesswork out of consumption.
“Even if you think drugs are the most dangerous thing in the entire world and no one should do them, you still have to understand that people are going to do these things,” he said.
Until the development of “A Better Trip,” Mauss had released weekly episodes of his podcast “Here We Are,” www.herewearepodcast. com. New episodes are in the works. In “Here We Are,” Mauss piggybacks on his comedy tour schedule to interview researchers in fields like biology, psychology and one of his favorite subjects — consciousness. One in 50 is about psychedelics, he said. He doesn’t want to be pigeonholed.
Mauss’ podcast often feels like it is telling the subject’s origin story. When telling his own, Mauss starts at around age 9. Mauss decided to be a comic in the fourth grade, when his impending elementary school graduation had him thinking about the trajectory of his entire life. His family mainly worked in construction and the nightly airing of grievances he now sees as blowing off steam made the job seem “completely miserable.” So, informed by a friend over video games that telling jokes for a living was a possibility, Mauss dove into the

art of stand-up.
“Fortunately, I got it into my head before I was old enough to have reason or logic or any sense of practicality or pragmatism,” Mauss said. “I was foolish enough to believe in pursuing dreams and things.”
Comedy inspired him, giving
him something to aim towards and look forward to in adult life. But as a teen, it had some other benefits.
“Everything they were saying was so naughty, so I had to hide it from my parents,” Mauss said.
“That really fit into my life model at the time.”
By 23, Mauss officially considered himself a comedian. By 27, he was touring the globe and hitting the late night circuit with appearances on Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel’s shows
Mauss’ rebellious attitude also led him to another passion, a thirst for knowledge and pursuit of a wide range of scientific study.
“I was raised Catholic and rejected it and liked arguing with religious people,” Mauss said.
What started as reading about physics and evolution for argumentative purposes, blossomed into a genuine interest “and eventual
obsession” with science.
Now, Mauss said his drug of choice has changed.
“I’ve done a lot of drugs,” he said. “I’m an adrenaline junkie. I’ve traveled a ton and seen a zillion places. And nothing in life for me beats a good epiphany.”
Mauss wants to have his breath taken by a new revelation, a new way of looking at the world, a new explanation for human behavior. And maybe he’ll use it to create a consciousness shift in his audiences.
“Comedy, science and psychedelics are all a perception-altering experience,” Mauss said. “They blend together so well.”
