Though “small” is in the tle, the impact you make by celebrang Small Business Saturday is BIG. This season, it’s more important than ever to support the local businesses we love. Things may look different this year, but we can use our dollar to help small businesses make it through this difficult me. Small Business Saturday started amid the Great Recession in 2010 as a way to boost local economies. In 2011, business associaons, nonprofit trade groups, municipalies, and public officials start to unite, forming a Small Business Saturday Coalion to encourage everyone to Shop Small the Saturday aer Thanksgiving. Since then, consumers have spent well over $100 billion at small businesses over 10 days alone, and it’s goen so big that even former President Obama gave it a shoutout in 2013. That year, 1,400 businesses signed up to be Neighborhood Champions to host events, acvies and discounts. The event connues to grow, and the number of Neighborhood Champions grew to 7,500 in 2018. This year, there are more ways to shop local than ever before, with many stores offering online shopping and/or curbside pickup. Though the holiday will take place on Nov. 28, Downtown Bozeman is encouraging locals to Shop Small every Saturday through the holidays. About 62% of U.S.

small businesses say they need to see consumer spending to return to pre-COVID levels by the end of 2020 in order to stay in business, according to American Express, the founder of Small Business Saturday. By shopping small, you’re helping protect jobs and keep your money local. When you shop local, American Express esmates about 67 cents of your dollar stays in your community. Bozeman has about 300 small businesses, according to Downtown Bozeman, with our town’s small businesses offering a wide array of unique items and nearly everything you could ever need to purchase. It isn’t hard to shop local here. There’s a strong base of local businesses across the state: Montana has about 115,326 small businesses, according to a study published by the U.S. Small Business Administraon in 2015, and those businesses employed about two-thirds of the state’s populaon. There’s no doubt about it: Shopping small makes a big difference in Montana, and this year’s no different.

How to Shop Safe While Shopping Small: Bring a mask. State law currently mandates it, and it’s a great way to help keep yourself and others in our community safe. If you’re looking to add to your collecon, plenty of retail shops and businesses sell fun, unique masks and face coverings. Bring some hand sanizer. It’s a good idea to apply before entering and aer leaving an establishment, in order to prevent the spreading of germs. Many local retailers have started producing their own hand sanizer during the pandemic, providing another opportunity to shop local! Check the business’s social media or website before you go. They may offer the item you were looking for in an online store, or they might offer curbside pickup. They may also have special COVID precauons to be aware of before you go.

Give others space. It’s another great way to prevent the spread of COVID and something most are used to by now! Be aware of any standing markers on the floor, and stand six feet away from other shoppers as much as possible. Avoid touching things unnecessarily. Though it’s impossible to avoid altogether, be mindful of what you’re touching and try to only touch things you intend to buy. Go alone. While it’s fun to shop with others, avoid it, if you can! Come with a list of things you and others in your living situaon and inner circle need and shop for them. As what the establishment’s COVID precauons are. Every space is different! They may have precauons or safer spaces you’re unaware of, such as a heated outdoor seang area or places they’d like customers to sit while waing for a table, etc.

Reasons why you should shop small: Your dollar goes further in your local community. American Express esmates that 67 cents of every dollar you spend at a local business stays in your community. It’s easier than ever before. The pandemic has compelled businesses to offer new, creave ways to shop, including curbside pickup, delivery, online shopping and ordering. And if you shop in person, chances are you won’t have to go far to find a local business to support in Bozeman, with about 300 in our community. Small businesses accounted for 64 percent of all new jobs created in the U.S. from 1993 to 2011, according to the Small Business Administraon. Shopping small can help protect those jobs and create new ones in these tough economic mes. More small businesses equal more opons. A marketplace of thousands of small businesses leads to more innovaon and keeps prices lower in the long-term. It’s sustainable. Small businesses tend to use more locally-sourced products, which further smulates the economy and is beer for the environment, conserving energy and resources with less fuel for transportaon and less packaging. Small businesses make Bozeman, Bozeman. They add color, vibrancy, character and value to where we live. Small businesses need us. Sixty-two percent of businesses surveyed by American Express said they need to see consumer spending return to pre-COVID levels by the end of the year in order to stay in business.
