Get out, get involved Blossoming Bozeman community full of opportunity, culture By BEN PIERCE Chronicle Staff Writer

Whether you’re new to town or a lifelong resident, there’s never been more to do in Bozeman. Set in the Northern Rockies, the city’s thriving Western culture, access to the outdoors and close proximity to Yellowstone National Park have always provided countless recreational, educational and cultural opportunities. Long known as a nice place to visit, Bozeman is fast becoming known as a nice place to live. As the city’s population grows and diversifies, opportunities to get involved and expand your horizons abound. Best of all, Bozeman’s eclectic populous is open and accessible. From artists to outfitters,

professors to powder hounds, experts of all stripes share their skills and experience with the community. Getting involved can be as simple as signing up for a class, volunteering at a non-profit or joining a group for a hike. And if you’re a parent, you’re in luck. Kids can participate in outdoor recreation, physical education and the arts as easily here as anywhere. Engaging with the community is a great way to learn from others and make new friends. But best of all, it is a chance to contribute your own unique background and experience, to share who you are. Bozeman will be better for it.

Ellen Theatre hosts PechaKucha Bozeman By BEN PIERCE Chronicle Staff Writer

PechaKucha draws on the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” The intent is for a concise, fast-paced presentation that sparks the imagination.

PechaKucha Bozeman began with a gathering at the Story Mansion in the fall of 2011. The events give anyone with a passion or vision the chance to share their ideas with the community. Here’s the catch: speakers may only present 20 images and they have just 20 seconds per images to share their message for a total presentation time of 6 minutes, 40 seconds. Around 100 people showed up at the Story Mansion that night and the event was deemed a success. PechaKucha Bozeman has since blossomed into one of the city’s most popular speakers

series. The event is now held at the Ellen Theatre four times a year and tickets sell quickly. “We have the full Ellen Theatre, something like 470 seats,” said PechaKucha organizer Larry Sterne. “I don’t know if there are too many other cities of our size that are selling that many tickets. It is a pretty incredible showing.” Klein Dytham Architects in Japan pioneered the PechaKucha concept in 2003. The name PechaKucha draws on the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” The intent is for a concise, fast-

paced presentation that sparks the imagination. Sterne was first exposed to PechaKucha in Portland, Maine, but said the event really shines in Bozeman. “I think (PechaKucha) is a perfect event for Bozeman,” Sterne said. “Bozeman has tremendous community pride and people are genuinely interested in the community and other people in it. “There are an amazing number of fascinating people that have chosen to make Bozeman their home. But people are in silos — you have architects, environmentalists, outdoors types — PechaKucha gives those people a chance to interact.” Sterne said there is value in connecting people with different backgrounds and worldviews, but PechaKucha is also entertaining. “We think of ourselves as the anti-

n

conference,” Sterne said. “We try to keep it light. People want to laugh and have a good time. PechaKucha is bottom up. Many of our best speakers have no public speaking experience. Because of the format, if they have great visuals and can tell a story, they can have a great presentation.” The rapid format also keeps things moving. Any given PechaKucha Night features roughly 11 speakers, so there’s usually something for everyone. And if you aren’t interested in a topic, you’ve only got to wait a few minutes for a new speaker. The format stresses concise topics and exposes the audience to a wide breadth of ideas. Andy Wunsch of Bozeman spoke at PechaKucha Bozeman on Sept. 12, 2013. Wunsch, who travels frequently as sale manager for Sitka Gear, discussed how he learned to parent at the airport. MORE ON PAGE 10

“There is panic if you are running out of time or if you finish 8 seconds early.” “I write down notes about things I see that are a really good idea and things I’ll never do,” Wunsch said. “I put my name on the sign-up sheet and they gave me a call and I realized I had to get serious about it.” Wunsch said the PechaKucha format can be both fun and challenging. “There is panic if you are running out of time or if you finish 8 seconds early,” Wunsch said. “My natural cadence, I could say about four full

sentences in 20 seconds, but if you have a funny photo that gets a lot of laughter you might blow eight seconds. “I must have practiced that talk 50 times before I gave it,” Wunsch said. “That is just my style. There are others that get up there and just speak from the heart.” Wunsch said the topics covered the evening he spoke ranged from science experiments at Montana State University to a prison population in the

Philippiness to a women that rode her bike on a brewery tour of the Rocky Mountains. Sterne said PechaKucha Bozeman is about building community and bringing people together. On PechaKucha Night, the doors of the Ellen Theatre open at 6:30 p.m., but the show doesn’t start until 7:20 p.m. That gives people a chance to mingle and get to know one another. And at $8 — including the Ellen restoration fee — tickets are among the best bargain in town. “That is a very conscious decision,” Sterne said. “We are open to the community. We want anyone with a story to tell to participate. We want to make it available to everyone.” Sterne said that as PechaKucha Bozeman grows, the organization hopes to sponsor fledgling creative projects with small gifts. Sterne said

these creative community projects are another way to strengthen ties within Bozeman. Wunsch, who has attended 11 PechaKucha Nights, said he’s excited to see the event doing well. “Even if you are not really interested in the topic, you really connect with the speakers,” Wunsch said. “These are not paid professionals, these are community members up there speaking. There are a lot of people in Bozeman that are very passionate about what they do.” The next PechaKucha Night will be held at the Ellen Theatre on April 23 and April 24. PechaKucha Bozeman is currently seeking proposals from speakers. To submit a proposal, email pechakuchabozeman@gmail. com. In an afternoon, you can mingle with dinosaurs at the Museum of the Rockies and get a dose of Gallatin Valley history at the Pioneer Museum. Then take a glimpse into computing’s past, present and future at the American Computer Museum and wrap things up with a trip to the Children’s Museum of Bozeman. The Children’s Museum is the city’s newest museum, opening in 2001. The museum’s mission is to enrich the community by engaging families in the

magic of shared learning and discovery. “We are create lifelong learners,” said Eleanor Barker, executive director of the Children’s Museum. “The notion being that kids benefit from direct experience with materials. You can see something in a book or on a blackboard, but one of the best ways kids learn is by interacting.” The Children’s Museum includes exhibits that focus on science and art, construction and gardening. Nicole said the museum is an inspiring and fun place to visit. “There are so many different things to do,” Nicole said. “Fiona loves the vet clinic. They have lab jackets and doctor’s equipment to check the animals out.” A new exhibit called the STEAMlab is currently being constructed at the Children’s Museum. The STEAM in STEAMlab stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. The new installation will feature robotics, circuits and 3D printing technology. Barker said the STEAMlab will open

All the fancy gear and expensive apparel won’t help you catch a trout.

Embrace the challenge of fly-fishing By BEN PIERCE Chronicle Staff Writer

Y

ou picked up your kids, quit your job, sold your house and moved to Montana. You headed down to the fly shop and picked out a shiny new rod and a machined reel. You’ve got your flies and a guidebook, your waders and your net. You’ve figured out your knots and practiced your cast. And now you’re sitting at home wondering what to do next. Getting started in any new sport can be a challenge. Fly-fishing just happens to have a lot of them. It can feel as though the deck is stacked against you (even

when you’ve been fishing all of your life). Fear not, fellow angler, Montana will provide. You have just arrived in fly-fishing’s Mecca. The Gallatin Valley has miles upon miles of great water to explore. A short drive from Bozeman and you’ll find yourself on the banks of the world famous Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone rivers. A short drive further and the state’s magnificent angling opportunities can seem immeasurable. If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed, you are not alone. Here are a few tips for beginning anglers to get over that initial hump and out on the river.

serve you well on the bigger rivers. Find a fishing partner Whether it is a friendly face at the fly shop, a fishy looking lady at the bar or your significant other, keep your eyes open and don’t be afraid to talk fishing. If you see someone in Bozeman wearing polarized sunglasses, a trucker hat and a Patagonia shirt, there’s a good chance they’re a fisherman (or a climber, or a rancher, or a skier, or all of the above, but that’s another story). Strike up a conversation and see where it leads. Next thing you know, you

Community supported agriculture brings farm to table

By BEN PIERCE Chronicle Staff Writer

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) began as a way for farmers and consumers to share the risks and benefits of food production on a local level. At the beginning of the growing season, CSA members pay for a share of the anticipated harvest. As crops are harvested, the farmer distributes those foods to CSA members. “The consumer actually has a stake in the farm and that farm’s success,” said Sarah Alexander of Bozemanbased Market Day Foods, which operates a multi-farm CSA program. “The consumer is financing the farm, like being a shareholder in that farm’s harvest. They get a percentage of the harvest when it comes.” While CSA models have been revised and revamped over the years, the traditional purpose of CSAs still holds true — to provide locally grown foods from farmers to consumers. Alexander said interest in local foods and local farms is on the rise. “There are all sorts of reasons to purchase locally,” Alexander said. “People are craving that connection to rural roots. We see agriculture all around us, but you go to the grocery store and don’t know who grew your food. “Buying local keeps the money in your community,” Alexander said. “And local foods are fresher, taste better and are more nutritious.”

There are many reasons CSAs and local foods have come to the fore, Alexander said. More and more, consumers are thinking about their family’s health and the health of the environment. In an age of climate change, a product grown in Florida or South America and transported to market in Gallatin Valley has a greater carbon footprint than a product grown in Belgrade or Manhattan. Alexander said organic foods are also an important piece of the nutrition puzzle for many consumers. “Organically grown foods are a big deal,” Alexander said. “Many more people are buying organic. Buying locally you have a better idea what went into producing your foods.” Alexander said CSAs are a part of the greater local food movement. She said grocery stores are responding to consumer demand and are increasingly conscious of where their foods come. Many restaurant around Gallatin Valley list the local providers of their foods. It’s a movement that’s good for consumers and for the community, Alexander said. “Personally, I drive around southwest Montana and see all the small farms,” Alexander said. “It would be so sad to see that those farms weren’t there anymore.”

Volunteering a way to give back to community, make friends By BEN PIERCE Chronicle Staff Writer

Bob Eckstein and Jerry Johnson of Bozeman volunteer on a regular basis at the Gallatin Valley Food Bank. They help out by sorting donated foods and preforming various other tasks as needed. “Bob’s got a kind heart,” Johnson said, “and he knows there are hungry kids out there.” Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and to make some strong connections along the way. Patrick Flemming, volunteer coordinator at the Food Bank, said around 130 regular volunteers contribute 3 hours of time each week to help those in need. An additional 800-1,000 volunteers spend a day a year helping out at the Food Bank. “We have a wide variety of volunteers,” Flemming said. “Most of the volunteers are seniors, but we have college kids and high school students that come down. Some of our volunteers were doctors, some were CEOs; they all want to give back to the community.”

The Food Bank offers several programs and services. Donations and purchased foods are distributed through the Emergency Food Box Program, Senior Nutrition Services, Summer Meal Programs for Children, Health Kidspack Program and the Community Café. The Food Bank also distributes food at satellite sites in Three Forks, Big Sky and Belgrade. Volunteers help out in a wide variety of ways. From sorting foods to gardening during the summer months, there is no shortage of opportunities to lend a hand. Johnson has volunteered at the Food Bank for more than two years. He said the need is great, and he’s made some strong bonds with others as a volunteer. “I have some volunteers that are lifetime friends now,” Flemming said. “They come in and interact with people they wouldn’t normally have a chance to meet. They have the same kind of commitment. They are all here to do good for the community.”

Spring & Summer 2014 Recreation Programs

Sunday, March 2, 2014

A note from the Director… It is with great pleasure that we bring you the 2014 Spring/Summer Program Guide. We take our community’s quality of life seriously and we think it shows inside the pages of this guide. Our great community has been growing so fast that it has necessitated the addition and creation of many new programs and expanded facilities over the past few years. These new programs, along with our timeless classics, add to the richness of living in and visiting Bozeman. So this year we focus special attention on providing the highest quality programs and facilities that a town can offer. The newer most popular and successful programs will see natural extensions and the traditional classics receive a renewed focus and enthusiasm. We love being a part of what makes Bozeman such a special place to live, learn, work, grow, and play; and we’re sure you do too. See You Out There,
